Met a friend for lunch and although I forgot to take photos of the food, I still wanted to leave a review regarding the overall experience. When we arrived at 11:30am on a week day, there were only a few tables occupied. By the time we left at 2pm, the place was completely packed! For that reason, I'd highly recommend making reservations in advance. They're located in the same shopping plaza as Kahala Mkt across from Kahala Mall and Zippy's. In fact, they're actually located inside Kahala Mkt,, although you can access the restaurant from outside as well. Since there are multiple businesses in that plaza, the shared parking lot fills up fast. We were seated quickly in a comfortable 2-seater. Our waiter was very pleasant and attentive, however after he took our order, it arrived almost 45 min later. I kept seeing other customers who arrived way after us get their food first. Finally he came by and said they had cooked the burger incorrectly and had to re-do it. I'm not sure I believed that because even if they had to re-cook the burger, it still wouldn't have taken that long. I believe that the waiter may have forgot to put our order in and that's why we waited so long, but I don't know for sure what happened. All I know is that we waited awhile. The burger was cooked medium rare per my request, and it was tasty with the sauces and ingredients. It came with Honolulu Meat Co. beef patty, HiSTK bacon, white cheddar, Maui onion confit, jang sauce and fries. The bun was very soft. The price was $22 and I thought that was a bit pricey. Wonderful restaurant with excellent service and great appetizers/small plates. Our waiter Nolan was so funny and nice. The manager also ended up giving us a free dessert... We walked up around 6:45pm on a Saturday night and waited for ~40 minutes for a table for 3. We were so hungry, so we just ended up waiting, and I'm so glad we did. What can I say, I'm a pushover for parking-friendly dining that's within three miles from my house. Restaurants that make the grade are good to know for girls days out, meetings, or celebrating special occasions in a small group. Et Al satisfies these parameters. The restaurant is situated in Kahala MKT by Foodland, the newest strip mall to grace the 96816. Take the H1 freeway and it's the Waialae exit 26B heading east, and Kilauea Ave exit heading west. For brunch, order the Morning Zinger- a fresh mix of carrot juice, ginger, and orange juice to cleanse the palate and start your day. Accompany it with their famed lobster roll- a generous portion of real lobster meat wedged in a sweetly buttered bun prepared scampi style with a tarragon aioli. Lip smacking worthy. They now serve it with fries versus kettle chips. Desserts are to your liking. Nothing wowed me, but I always finish my meal with something sweet and have ordered all of them with zero regret. Now for dinner, going back to perfect timing, may I highly recommend the Grilled Kona Kampachi. I chose this item at last night's work meeting, and was delighted that I did! Although the kampachi is available for both lunch and dinner, the lobster and zinger are a beautiful duo that needs no replacement. Save this one for your dinner entree. Loved loved the ambience even though it was connected to the foodland farms kahala it is very cozy, but classy. Loved the lei on the bar chairs such a nice touch. Food was good.... Nothing super super exciting but enjoyable. The raw oysters were delish, and so was the 3 bone marrow bones that we needed extra sourdough for for appetizers. Thankful for a kids menu for our little ones but also they had a bacon burger with option of regular fries or parmesan garlic. I had the pasta with farfa something with asparagus, peas and proscuitto add shrimp. It was okay because the veggies to me were just a little over powering. Pasta texture was perfect. Tried a bite of my hubbies short rib loco moco which was soft and tasty. We happened to get a complimentary cookie with cereal milk as they were celebrating 12 days till christmas. Awesome spot in the Kahala Market (upscale rebrand of Foodland) with ample parking. Service is fast and friendly. They have a large assortment of drinks- my fav are their Tea Lattes. The Hochija latte is my favorite. I really liked their Mushroom Risotto- probably one of the best risottos I've ever eaten. Their Braised Short Rib loco moco was quite good. I think this was my second time eating at Et Al., and the food did not disappoint! My friend made reservations for a Thursday night, and it was good she did. The restaurant got pretty busy later in the evening. I love the architecture of the restaurant, especially behind the wine bar. Everything on their menu sounded so delicious, but I wanted something lighter for dinner. I decided on the pesto pizza, and it hit the spot! I loved the slight smokiness of the crust, and the pesto was very refreshing, with the perfect amount of nuttiness. There was a generous amount of mozzarella too! So grateful for a brunch place that actually takes reservations! We tried their crispy soft-shell crab benedict and garlic chicken & mochi waffle. They were both fantastic! The benedict came with avocado, Kamuela tomato, arugula, béarnaise, taro muffin, and ulu rosti. It was a great combination of flavors and I enjoyed it so much. The garlic chicken had robust flavor and was fried to perfection. The mochi waffle was not overly sweet and had a lovely, chewy texture. 100% would get both again. The food was however hit or miss. The tako was overcooked and chewy and the smaller end was downright burnt. The uni pasta, special for the night, had nice flavors, but the noodles were overcooked. We ordered two kampachis and one smelled a little fishy. Otherwise it was cooked well and we liked the accompaniment of the vegetables. On to dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate macadamia tart. It was sweet, salty and moist. The ube pave was however dry and disappointing. Onward to service. It started a little rocky where we had to ask for utensils, napkins and such after dishes were served. Things I've ordered: Clam chowder (1/5) - THIS was highly recommended as their popular dish. But why did my bread ended up burnt & my soup given to me at room temperature? I'm so sad :( it seemed really watery and not thick and chunky. It also lacked flavor. Clam chowder is one of my favorite soups and I was so dissatisfied in this. Oysters (1/5) - The oysters come with 4 They forgot to give us the sauce to accommodate our oysters and I didn't realize this. So my friend & I tried these oysters WITHOUT sauce at first and it didn't taste fresh... they later brought out the sauce & it was semi better. The main entrees I had made up for the 2 appetizers. The loco moco had good flavor and the kampachi was delicious. Although the kampachi was slightly over cooked because the skin tasted burnt :( Overall- I really don't know if I would return and update my review. I'm honestly very displeased with my first visit. A previous review describes Et Al as "nothing good, nothing bad and nothing wrong". This exactly describes the place. I haven't had any bad experience at the place but nothing is overwhelmingly good as well. You can't go wrong with their chopped salad, pasta and hamburger. Some of their signature cocktails are also worth a try. The lemongrass vesper is my favorite as it is quite alcohol forward. Parking can be challenging with so many businesses sharing it. Okay so I was trying to find some veggie options on Waikiki side and came across this little hotspot. I want to explore their whole menu as I'm digging the creations they have going with all the fresh ingredients. If I was still on island for Thanksgiving would have totally taken them up on the holiday offerings. I had low expectations because of the slim pickings for veggie options in Waikiki side but they delivered and slapped my senses. Went here on Christmas Eve lunch time. I made reservations through open table and got their 20 mins early and they sat us right away. The service was pretty quick. The waitress was very friendly, she greeted us and got us water. They had their Christmas menu so they recommended this lamb meatball as a starter. All of us got the loco moco. The lamb dish tasted a bit tarts not sure what was in the sauce. I didn't care for it but the bread that came with it was good. The loco moco was pretty good. The short rib was very soft and tender, I was a bit disappointed with the rice though. It wasn't anything special. I thought in the menu it said fried rice so I was excepting a little more. et al. seemed like a proper choice for a well-deserved, nicer dinner that wouldn't break the bank. We made our reservation through Open Table and were seated promptly despite being 15 minutes early. The ambiance held a moderate buzz of live music and continual diners. The guy singing was actually pretty good and sang a bunch of alternative songs. Kudos! It was between the braised short rib loco moco and et al. burger for me. Our waitress did a good job on selling the burger and the bun! I asked for it without the bun and she insisted it wouldn't be the same and I may as well get the loco moco instead. She was right, the burger and bun were perfect, the truffle fries complemented it so well, too. My wife reported the lobster roll was "delicious". The bun wasn't too greasy from the butter, lobster was tender and juicy, best yet, no mayo! The arancini was perfectly crispy and full of flavor. I wish I didn't have to share! The banana pudding was not good, incredibly dense and flavorless, it seemed slightly old. Mahi'ai Table's desserts weren't good either, so, perhaps it's just their downfall. Got an ube adult beverage but the rum was so robust it overpowered the mild, sweet flavor of ube. I would not get that again, it was pretty, though! Service was ok. Our waitress was a little flat with us and I noticed her more upbeat with her other tables. Parking can be difficult with so many other businesses in the area. The lights from cars parked in front, can be jarring, even with the blinds drawn. Bathrooms are outside and you need a code, be sure to get that before walking there. Et Al in Latin means "and others" and after coming here for dinner with my family, I would prefer to dine at out other spots indeed. Before I get critical, I will preface by saying that et al put itself on the map via social media and food magazines by winning second place for best new restaurant in 2021. My mom raves about their brunch but the dinner was probably one of the most disappointing meals I've had since visiting home for the week. Let me put it this way - the decaf coffee was the best item we ordered tonight. Nuff said. For food, we got the kanpachi with chili soy broth and garlic rice, the clam chowder, oysters, the lobster roll, the salad, and the garlic fried chicken with mochi waffle. By reading the random assortment of food items I just listed, are you also confused? I'm unsure what type of vibe they're going for but the spectrum ranges from fresh oysters and bone marrow to lobster rolls with French fries and waffles for dinner which seems odd. If is restaurant is asking $37 for a kanpachi dish, I would think that the food should be a bit higher class. Personally for myself, I didn't love my kanpachi dish. While it was good, it was not worth the price, I felt like I could make it at home, and I still felt hungry after unfortunately. As for the fried chicken, believe me when I say you could get the same exact thing in the Foodland deli next door for a fraction of the cost. The rest of the food was okay, but nothing in particular to ride home about. The staff was nice to us but not very attentive to our needs, perhaps due to being tired from a long day of work. I do want to give the brunch a try someday but do not waste your money on the dinner. To the restaurant management - my suggestion would be to align your dinner service offerings with a consistent vibe. I was a bit worried about finding (my idea of) good parking being it is a supermarket parking lot shared with other establishments, but I quickly found the perfect stall. Although the offerings are limited, we both enjoyed our lunch choices. In my case, it is a good thing because I am often indecisive when faced with too many options. I will definitely be back to try other items. The portions are large. My Risotto was a bit heavy for lunch, but got to enjoy it the next day.
