Falafelland is one of the participating restaurants for the TL Passport, a program to try the business in the Tenderloin. I had such a good experience the first time, so this was the perfect opportunity to try them again and get a stamp. I placed my order with the owner, asking for the falafel pocket. He said to get the falafel wrap instead because it was better. I found that hilarious because why have the pocket on the menu anyway. But hey, when the chef/owner says the wrap is better, you listen. So I got that and some baklava. I guess I'll never know what the falafel pocket will taste like because the wrap was so delicious! It is packed with falafels, veggies, and tahini. And it is so flavorful from all the spices they use. And though it is more expensive than the pocket, it is a huge wrap. I definitely got a lot of bang for my buck. The baklava was a nice way to end the meal, and it wasn't cloyingly sweet. I also got some cascara tea, which is free with a purchase at the moment. It had a gentle coffee flavor, which wasn't overpowered by the ginger. I'm assuming it has caffeine in it, so something to note if you're sensitive. It's going to be hard to try something new off their menu after having the falafel wrap. read more

I honestly don't understand how this place has a 5-star rating. The falafel was good, but not nearly exceptional enough to justify the hype. I ordered the falafel wrap, and it was surprisingly light on falafel. What really ruined the experience, though, was the service. The employee behind the counter seemed completely overwhelmed and disorganized. He asked me to confirm my order multiple times, yet somehow still forgot one of our meals. We waited, reminded him several times, and continued waiting before the missing order finally arrived. He did offer us a complimentary piece of baklava as an apology, which was appreciated, but it didn't make up for the long delay and confusion. I also felt bad for the growing line of customers behind us who were stuck waiting while everything backed up. We only stopped here because there wasn't much of a line at the time and it was conveniently located near the parade we were attending. I ordered through the Too Good To Go app for $7.99 (total $8.68 with tax). The app listed the value of the food as $24, but that felt slightly overrated for the amount. I received a Falafel Wrap with tomatoes, cucumber, pickles, tahini, and what they called a Mediterranean salad. On the regular menu, the wrap is about $13.99 (around $15.20 with tax), so TGTG probably doesn't reflect the actual price of $24. I watched the person preparing the food. He mixed the salad directly into the wrap, not as a separate side. The wrap itself was fresh, with about 5-6 pieces of falafel. The falafel pieces were a good size, and overall the wrap was a standard size based on other falafel wraps I've had. The falafel wrap tasted good, and paying under $10 through TGTG is reasonable. Very accommodating to requests but honestly the way they prepare their food is perfection. The staff are warm and offer complimentary tea while you wait. The food is outstanding but I always go for the falafel-- wrap, salad or plate. Their hot sauce is super flavorful too. read more

Came here for a takeout and found myself in a small restaurant with a sitting area consisting of one square table that can sit about 6 people, another narrow table against the wall that an probably sit around 4 people, with chairs (sofas?) covered in intricately-patterned carpets. Large photos of Yemen hang on the wall. A sole guy was making a falafel wrap by hand while chatting about the healthy ingredients with two customers already waiting at the counter, and invited me to try the cascara tea that was also health (more than green tea). Today I found this magical place on a whim. It had no reviews, but I thought I'd take a chance (I'm never afraid to be first)! I'm glad I did. The owner was so nice and warm, he made me and my coworker feel like family. He offered us some chai, it was delicious! The real star of the show was the falafel! It was well seasoned and moist, perfect. He uses a special ingredient which adds a richness. He is very passionate about what he does, and it shows in his cooking, and the way he explains things. He also clearly cares about the quality of the ingredients and you can taste that in the food and beverages like cascara tea (which he brings back from Yemen!). Billy, the adorable, amazing, gentle, king of the neighborhood, quit his day job after an accident to pursue his passion. He loves food and he loves to make people happy. Fortunately for those of us who love truly great Mediterranean and Arabic comfort food, he decided to start a restaurant with his wife. I spent an hour hanging out with Billy and his Uber efficient sous chef, Amarto. Billy proudly shines a light on his Yemeni roots and gives us the best of Arab-Jewish kitchens, drawing from thousands of years of spices and flavors. I started with a falafel wrap, and gobbled it within 3 minutes. The falafel is excellent, and what makes it shine are the sauces in a thin wrap. Some of the sauces cost a buck a spoon to billy, but his heart is in making you happy, so the prices do not reflect the effort or quality of his dishes. To make the falafel work, Billy experimented with tens of different blends, including a secret ingredient that he swore me not to reveal, but is a touch of genius. Never in a million years would I have guessed it. While I was waiting for my falafel wrap, billy shared some of his moms honey pastry dessert, and gave me some to go. While that was inspired, what blew my mind was his special tea. Made with coffee bean wraps and some amazing spices, super low in caffeine and tastes like it had flavors of pistachio, cardamom. I went back for thirds. What makes a good restaurant great is the service. Falafelland is akin to eating at your best friends house. While I waited for my take away flavored rice and salad bowl, Billy asks me to try his Turkish delight. So far, I've tried three things. And just then, he shares this insanely delicious Arabic comfort food - lentil fritters doused in yogurt with green chutney and spices. Think Indian chaat. That makes it the 4th sample. I chat with Billy and Amarto, and Billy asks me to get the fasolia sandwich. I offer to buy, but he insists on giving it to me at no cost. His philosophy is that, if I am happy, I will come back again, and tell others about the wonderful experience. I ate the fasolia sandwich today - think of a baguette that's tossed crisp, add layers of tahini, hummus, types of sauces, throw in delicious stewed beans, add some fresh greens and voila. True to Billy's word, this was insane. Mind blown. And I am craving me some Falafelland. If you want to experience soulful food that's cooked with more love and heart than any other restaurant in an over-gentrified San Francisco, try Falafelland, and be prepared to be blown away. read more

This would be a great name for a theme park where people would ride in giant fiberglass replicas of falafel balls that spin in a humongous vat of hot oil and land in a bed of magic tabouli. That would definitely be an E ticket ride, though Disneyland doesn't do those anymore, do they? Well, it could fit into It's a Small World because those baby animatronics probably get hungry. Anyway, this tiny place isn't even in Disneyland, though it is in an unamusement park of sorts, the 6th Street corridor between Market and Howard. This place is so tiny that there are only three seats along the window counter, all of which were taken over by guys who were helping the owner with the marketing strategy. Maybe pretend you're not on 6th Street? Anyhow, I zeroed in on the $7.99 Falafel Salad to try. The owner was quite friendly and helped guide his wife to prepare the dish. I liked the fact that he didn't bark at her but showed her how to think about the preparation. Can't get much more hole-in-the-wall. A very tiny storefront with one small counter against the window, situated in the midst of the 6th Street chaos. But the Yemeni food is homemade and delicious! Lamb Kabsa: At first glance, it looks like a Chipotle bowl, but once you dig in you'll learn it's so much better. The rice comes in long thin kernels and is insanely fluffy, without a single clump. Lots of nice fragrant spices included too. There's some veggies in the mix too, a little fresh and a little pickled, which make it seem like you're doing something healthy for yourself. The lamb bits are the real treat though. So tender and infused with a delicious gravy. Each piece comes around medium-sized bones and some have yummy marrow inside. The spicy cheese sauce is nice too, though I could stand it to be a tad spicier. read more

Highly impressed with the food quality and service I experienced here. Walked in for takeout amid COVID - they only allow 2 customers inside at a time because the space is pretty small. Immediately after walking in we were greeted, and Willy kindly helped us choose our orders off of the menu. I got the falafel wrap and my boyfriend got the falafel salad. While he carefully put together our food and made fresh falafels, he made friendly conversation and made us feel very welcome. He respected COVID guidelines as he wore a mask and gloves while making our orders right in front of us. The food was amazing - falafels were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The wrap was gigantic and I couldn't even finish it all. Definitely a bang for your buck! It was layered and filled with fresh vegetables, plenty of falafels, and a bunch of amazing sauces. Wanted to eat something different, so I opened my YELP app for guidance. That's how I found "Falafelland". Easy walk from the "Signature Inn". We timed our visit to be there after rush lunch four. We two were the only customers, and one man working. I'm kind of happy about that. Inside is one table with 6 chairs. That's it! I was surprised and unprepared by the small size eatery. The other patrons YELP pics inside that are loaded (in the past 5 months) makes it seem like a bigger space. But actually - it's tiny. The afternoon sun shined brightly in and heated up the room. Almost claustrophobic, if there had been more people in there. Wife ordered a chicken salad and I a falafel salad. We both were very pleased and ate it all. It was delicious. Very fresh & tasty. Great ingredients used. We both were gifted a free square of a soft tahini. I likened it to peanut butter fudge. Not too sweet, just right. I just had to have baklava. Crazy green pistachios stuffed in a phyllo fold, dripping with honey. Oh honey, let me tell you, we enjoyed what we ate. A spot of disappointment for me was from pictures the business owner put in YELP. There included dramatic photos of soups, stews, spiced potatoes, lamb dish meals and trays of goodies etc. Nothing available as I could see. All I saw was a small display of pans (behind glass) filled with veggies, harrisa et al. So I had it in my mind that I was going to order spiced potatoes and soup. Bummer for me! There is no menu to hold or see. You have to use the free-standing credit card to order. Mind you, I might be off on some of this. There was a bit of a language miscommunication. One of the best dining experiences I've had in San Francisco! Having the privilege to eat at Billy's place was amazing. It's an unassuming spot with big flavor. I visited with my sister during a weekend trip and we instantly felt welcomed into a cozy, traditional Yemeni home. Stopped by before a Bindlestiff show and so happy I did. I had the falafel and rice and salad plate and it was delicious, with a tiny taste of spicy and the wonderful flavors in each bite. The falafel was crispy and didn't get soggy while I ate. The owner and team are so personable and have good hearts, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of eating at the small community table. I didn't expect to spend as much time here as I did, but every single second was worth it. Walked by this brand new restaurant last Friday and couldn't get it out of my mind, had to try it! I ordered the basics for my first time there: Falafel Salad! Came with 3 falafel balls, salad, 1 dolma, flavorful rice, hummus, red chili sauce, green sauce, some pickled veggies, and a warm pita bread (you only see a few pieces from the whole thing in the pic) Soooo good, I killed my entire plate (don't get me wrong, there was a LOT of food) and already planning on my next visit here.
