Came here for dinner with a few friends because one of them recommended Farid and I must say, their recommendation did not disappoint! This place does get busy, but luckily I got here before everyone else so was able to put our name down on the waitlist in advance. Our table of 4 were seated shortly after our whole party arrived (so within 20 minutes). Not sure if they do reservations, but if you do have a larger party, know that the dining area doesn't have a bunch of tables, so your best bet is to get there early and be willing to wait if needed! We ordered the following to share: - Mast Khiar: yogurt dip with cucumbers, looooooove! Generous portion, and they also provided more of the flat bread. I'm not too familiar with all of the different types of Persian bread, but it seems like what they provided was Lavash, which I love! - Ghormeh Sabzi: herb step with eggplant, veal, and red beans, served with white and saffron basmati rice. First time trying this and it was also a hit! So flavorful and not salty at all, which is great. I often find American stews and soups overly salty (so avoid them), so I'm always open to stews from other cultures that use other spices and seasonings. Stumbled upon this cool alley behind Hill Street in the jewelry district of DTLA. Decided to try this Persian spot and was not disappointed with my decision. The Hummus appetizer was loaded with flavor and was heavy on the garlic in a good way. Had the Kobideh combo and really enjoyed the flavorful and juicy Kobideh and the fluffy rice. Great middle-eastern food at reasonable prices! This small place is hidden inside the St. Vincent Court which is inside an alleyway, so you won't find it unless you got curious enough to go down this alley. There are also several other middle-eastern restaurants in this alley, but this one is the best! Also, the restaurant almost always has open tables so you don't have to wait to get seated. The most common dishes people order here are the Beef Koobideh and Chicken Koobideh. I usually get the beef koobideh. For the lunch special version of the Beef Koobideh (long piece of beef), you get 1 long piece of beef along with rice (mixed /w saffron), salad and some bread. If you get the non-lunch version, you pay a bit more but you get 2 beef koobideh pieces. Same for the chicken. Usually 1 piece is enough to satisfy most people. The beef is a bit greasy but it is very delicious and juicy. But the rice......this rice is what makes the entire dish. I've never had rice that was this light and fluffy. The rice had the right amount of oil/water and softness to make it super easy to nom on. I've never had rice that was THIS easy to eat, there's no stickiness on the rice either so it just sort of slides down your throat. I do have a couple things that I think the restaurant could work on. The salad tastes very bland, it tastes like eating a cabbage raw. There isn't a strong dressing with it or anything. Also the bread they give isn't fluffy, it's pretty flat, has no texture and is pretty tasteless. But since you come to a restaurant for its main course (which is AMAZING) and not it's appetizer, I still give it 4/5 stars and would recommend people to try it at least once. read more

Farid is a small mom & pop restaurant that deserves more recognition for their food. The restaurant is in an alleyway in St. Vincent Court around the jewelry district. There's a lot of other quaint restaurants in this area. I'm not well versed in Persian food but I think Farid is the real deal. We ordered 2 entrees. They come in large portions with basmati rice and a side salad. The meat is well seasoned and tender. The entrees are decently priced considering the rent in this area is probably sky-high. I have to deduct one star because of the location. Farid is hard to find if you don't know the area very well. Hopefully, tourists stumble upon this place while doing a walking tour of downtown because it is very difficult to find parking. read more

Hidden gem in St. Vincent's Alley. Went with my boss for lunch yesterday and ordered the "Chicken Kubideh" lunch special for $7.99. This place was his recommendation and I was a bit skeptical. Ended up with a huge juicy and flavorful chicken skewer served with a roasted tomato, basmati rice with saffron, and small salad (see photo). Service was good and the food didn't seem to take that long, especially when I kept looking at my watch to check time before a 1pm meeting. It's a small place, not fancy. But the food was delicious and the price reasonable. The only issue was that people were smoking outside, so some of the smoke lingered inside. During the past decade, I've come to eat at this restaurant periodically. The decor may have changed a bit, but the food is still great. This restaurant is located in St. Vincent Court, in the jewelry district in downtown Los Angeles. There is plenty of pay lots for parking in the surrounding streets. My dishes of choice are usually the barg or the chicken kebab. Both dishes come with bastami rice, a grilled tomato, and a salad. To top off the meal, I usually drink a cup of two of chai. Afshin and his business partner are pretty cool. They remember me, even after so long a time since my last visit. They know all their clients well, and are friends with the owners of the surrounding buildings. Needless to say, their customer service is on point. An added plus to this restaurant is the artwork. There were three paintings hanging inside the restaurant when I first discovered this place. Now there is one left, and I assume the other two got bought. I'm considering buying the one I took a photo of. I'll be back to try out their other dishes. Stay tuned. read more

Very good. Along the scenic St. Vincent Court. Was tempted to try Tulip Cafe next door which looks cute, but was empty, and the lady outside of Tulip trying to get us inside made me feel a bit of a hard sell. I must have looked like a lost tourist. Ah well... Farid also looks cute and is very attractive. Inside and out. Yelpers' notes on chain-smokers outside spooked me enough to definitely go inside. Tried the Yelp recommended Boneless Chicken (mmm and pretty moist). I liked the salad and rice that came with. Plus the complementary hummus and flatbread. Very flavorful and light. The lamb shank was also excellent -- though not part of the official lunch Specials, it was pretty reasonably priced. Barely needed a knife it was smooth and tender. The dill rice that accompanies that might be too intense, for me. They did suggest swapping that out initially with their more simple white/saffron rice. Great strong Turkish coffee, too! read more

This hidden gem was buried away in the alley of St. Vincent. Came here on a busy day with my aunt and boy it was a rough experience just to find this place. First, never ever if your life depended on it come on a Friday for lunch, unless you work in the area and can just walk. BIG MISTAKE! Parking was brutal and many lots were filled. Sadly, I ended up out of desperation paying $24 for some office building across Pershing Square. What a joke! I live exactly 12 mins from this place and legit had hell with the crowds and parking. Also, it got fairly crowded rather quickly, so my aunt and I ordered fast to beat the lunch hour rush. Everything was going fine and our food arrived with great presentation and very tasty too. We both opted for half rice/ half salad and it was great with well-done salmon kabob. Honestly, the food did it for me. The wait-staff however, not so much. Super sweet people, but I legit flagged down our waitress for water several times; eating kabob and rice you need you water and to get the bill was a joke. Our waitress never brought our bill, so finally I flagged down the manager or owner waiving my hands like a crazy person out of desperation to pay for our lunch. After running an errand at the Saint Vincent Jewelry Center, my partner insisted on eating lunch in this small alley way tucked away in St. Vincents. As soon as we entered the alley, I felt like we were wisked away from LA and into some foreign land like Montreal or Europe. No cars or loitering were allowed, instead there are small cafe and delis with cute window fronts and facades (like in Europe). There are a few delis offering sandwiches and salads but once we passed those, we found KEBAB HEAVEN. We had a touch decision to face-- Mediterranean or Persian? How awesome is that dilemma? We finally settled for Farid's because of their lunch specials. I ordered a chicken koobideh lunch special-- 1 piece of chicken koobideh with basmati rice and salad. He ordered the boneless chicken special. I would rate 3 out of 5 stars for my koobideh-- nice size but lacking a distinct punch of flavor that I'm used to with Persian kebabs. The boneless chicken fared the same-- nice portion but something was missing in flavor. I did like that they had a salad with my meal-- it was nice and refreshing to have it tossed with a light house vinaigrette. We popped in for a bite to eat while jewelry shopping across the street. We love Persian food, and shared the koobideh platter and the eggplant dip. I literally only ate one kabob, no rice, and a few bites of eggplant dip with their flat bread. It was very tasty. BUT... about half an hour later I was in agonizing pain, back pain and stomach bloating, pain, and nausea. Had the first time experience of having to pull over suddenly at a busy street corner in downtown LA to leap out of the car and hurl into a public trash can can for several minutes straight. It was terribly misery inducing. It was the first thing I ate that day, so it's the only thing that could have made me sick. I'm really hesitant to give them 5 stars only because it's my first time coming here and 5 stars are earned with repeat visits or spectacular experiences. But goodness, I almost gave them 5 stars. I really am picky with Persian food. I grew up eating it a lot. My husband and I were at the Jewelry District hunting around and it was time to eat. I had seen another Persian food place down the street first and had my heart set on Persian food. We showed up to the place and, god, they were so rude about being closed (even though we were able to go in and sit before realizing they were closed). But this isn't about them. Ended up finding this place on chance, walking back to browse for another place. Happy find! First off, we didn't realize they were on the last hour of closing. We didn't realize it because we didn't feel rushed! We weren't the only ones there, but still, the employees were AWESOME with the hospitality and service. The food, omg, that basmati was so delicious! Took me back to my childhood. Mom will love this place when I bring her!
