We were tourists (NC) and quite enjoyed this place. Not only was the drive in nostalgic and reminiscent of childhood in our hometown, but the cheeseburgers and fries were quite tasty as well. Tea was great -- we are southerners who prefer unsweetened tea, so we love traveling north where there's no sugar in the tea and no one forgets and pours you a cup of syrup anyway! I have enjoyed Fat Boy since I was in high school. They do a lot of things well from their onion rings, to there BLT and you have got to love their milk shakes. This is a very busy place in the summer and we just had to try it out. Really wished that we had not done that. Lobster rolls was dripping with mayo (the sweet kind) and very little actual lobster. Fries were grease bombs and the shrimp roll was basic fried seafood. read more

Really very disappointed with this since the new ownership took over. I've seen them increase their social media prescence to try and build hype over the new ownership, the fact that they now accept cards, etc. But unfortunately, social media seems to be the only big gain this resutaurant has had. This was once a place where you could spend a little money for really great food. Prices have risen significantly, food is of a lower quality, and it's honestly sad to see a once-great restaurant fall like this. The onion rings are no longer hand battered, they are made from frozen. The onion rings, that were at one point famous, are now gone. While some of the items are the same quality (whopper burger, hot dogs, etc), items like nuggets and fries taste... Bad. Like they came from a freezer as well. Overall very disappointed with this new ownership, and I hope they do more than just use this "retro, aesthetic" restaurant for social media clout while letting the overall quality slip. I've been going to Fat Boy's for decades, and there have always been ups (chicken nuggets back in the 70 and 80s; fresh fish sandwiches in the more recent past) and downs (several, less successful chicken nugget changes over the years; staffing challenges necessitating a shorter season). I was thrilled that the long time owners were able to find a buyer and happy to see some posts that led me to believe that they would strive to maintain the quality and traditions to which so many of us have become accustomed. I am dismayed to say that our first (and final) foray into Fat Boy 2.0 was beyond disappointing. I will say that the service was outstanding: both responsive and courteous. However, the food was abysmal: greasy, unseasoned, and incredibly stingy for the price. While I haven't been a fan of their chicken nuggets for several years, at least the nuggets used to contain actual chicken. Not anymore! The haddock nuggets were clearly made of fish, but they were completely overcooked. The only hint of moisture left was the pool of grease in which they sat. The onion rings were very crunchy, but not the thin, crispy rings Fat Boy aficionados expect. The baskets didn't even come with the simple, buttered, toasted roll that would be really hard to mess up. Our four meals and two drinks (one a room temperature bottle of water on a 90 degree day) cost more than $60! I know all good things must come to an end, but I'm really sad to see this one go. The 5 stars are for Fat-Boy's mere existence and car service, they are not for the lobster or crab rolls. The low prices for the lobster/crab rolls are a Siren's song. You will be lured into the drive-in for a $5.00 lobster roll, but if you care about big meaty chunks of fresh lobster, you'll be unhappy. The same goes for the crab rolls (not the chunk part- no chunks in crab rolls). There is way too much mayo, or white binder material in both and the meat seems, well, not freshly shucked. I feel badly saying anything negative about Fat-Boy's, but this review is going in my list about crab and lobster rolls. In all honesty I have eaten lunch here for the past two days and did get a crab roll because of the price, and yes I was disappointed. It is a good thing I ordered a cheeseburger and fries to pack down my crab roll. The crab roll is the least disappointing of the two, so get that instead of a lobster roll. The canadian bacon BLT on a hamburger roll is a specialty- it isn't that special. I agree with some of the other reviews about the food being so-so and, what's all the fuss about....? Fat-Boys is just a piece of Americana that is quickly disappearing and for that they get 5 stars just to keep them as they are. This place has great car side service with engaging staff who are happy to help you decide on what to order and let you know how to get service. To get service turn your lights on. The menu has something for everyone seafood chicken burgers hotdogs and plenty of sides. The buns are all served toasted, which I absolutely loved. Over many summer visits, it remains ok but the trend is downward. Food - classic coastal drive in. Clams are good, scallops are good, fish is good, fries are good. "excellent' remains elusive. I've been eating here for 30+ years and it's always yummy. The service is wonderful-- I always eat in my car (never inside). I prefer their lobster roll's to the famous Red's. They're smaller but delicious and you won't have to wait hours or deal with crowds. Order 2 rolls if you have to. Hands down the BEST onion rings I've ever had. They're not the super thick battered kind, but lighter and perfectly crunchy. And don't forget to get a frappe. Fat Boy's makes them old-fashioned thick with any combination of flavors (my fav is mocha & banana). You might gain 10 pounds after eating here, but it's SO worth it! Great nostalgic 50s style drive-in. Based on previous reviews, I tried the lobster roll, onion rings and a vanilla frappe. So good! The lobster roll is very modestly priced and very tasty. Due to the price, it is a bit smaller than average, but it is a nice sandwich. It has more mayo than usual, which I actually liked, but if that bothers you, be warned. The onion rings were perfect; crispy, with no separation of onion and batter when you bite into them. One sip of the vanilla frappe rocketed me back to childhood and I was lost in its creamy goodness. They have MANY flavors to choose from, and you can even create your own by mixing the flavors, so you 're sure to find your own frozen bliss. read more

But wow, it took an hour for them to serve us and we were there at 5PM- ( i think that's on the early side for dinner) and our servef also blew past a few times until I had to roll down my window and shout for her to come take our try when we were ready to leave even though we had our lights on. read more

The food is good, the atmosphere is better. Going here was like being straight up in the 60s or 70s which made it one of the most unique places but the food is just ok, it's still good and the prices are very reasonable which makes it all the better. read more

Great onion rings, decent bacon cheeseburger, decent fries. Fries not as good and greasy as McDonald's, but they are similar and they are much thicker and more potato-ey. I enjoy them very much. The fun thing is the summers where you can go in your car and the waitress comes out and they deliver right out to you. I have good memories of piling a group into the car, parking at Fat Boys, ordering without having to move a muscle, getting the food INSIDE the car and shoveling it in in there. Good times. Not the most amazing food in the world but it is a fun time, and I love the big fat boy on top of the restaurant. Cute, and worth a visit at least once. read more
