Fat Boy is a well loved staple of Brunswick. You can eat a burger in your car and enjoy a tasty frappe. The food is cheap and you get what you pay for. It's greasy cheap food. The fries, burgers, nuggets, seafood is all frozen. They do still make their own onion rings which too are extremely greasy. I eat here maybe once a year when I want a frappe and a good old fashion cheap pile of greasy fried food. You're almost guaranteed to have stomach cramps from the food. I give it three stars because it's not the worst food I ever eaten and it is pretty nostalgic. read more

I can't really remember the last time I was here, which was years ago, but this place always gave me some good quality fast food. This review is probably a bit biased since I used to live in Brunswick and this place is a bit of an institution there. During my last visit to the area, I decided it was time to introduce my family to this place. Suffice to say, it was nice to see that some things never change. We opted for the full Fat Boy "drive-in" experience of ordering and eating our meals in our car. The service was great and the food, while by no means the height of fine cuisine, was just as I remembered; decent and cheap. The thing to keep in mind is that Fat Boy is more about the experience and the nostalgia than it is the food. It's decent for the price. They help keep their prices down by keeping it "cash only," which although my husband complains about it, I certainly don't mine. It's not the best food I've ever had, but certainly not the worst, either. The fact that it's a 50s-style drive-in gives it bonus points. Simple food done well. Sandwiches, burgers, fried things...and a carhop style of service that is prompt and friendly. We arrived with less than 10 minutes to close and received great service. We look forward to spring every year. Ya, the warm weather is nice and so is the snow melting. But let's face it; we love spring because Fat Boy's opens. This is good food, cheap, with great servers. It gets cramped at lunch and dinner time, so get there a little early or plan on eating a little bit later in the day to get a spot. There are a few seats inside, but what is the fun in that!? Nearly fifty years ago my grandfather operated a business located across the tracks, down in back of the Fat Boy, it was called Airport Auto Parts. I would spend my summer vactions in Brunswick with my grandfather. Almost every day I would walk up the dirt driveway, cross the tracks and climb up the embankment that led to the Fat Boy. The owner was a great guy and used to let me in the back to wait for my food in the kitchen. I still remember the smells and the hustle and bustle in the kitchen. Mostly I remember the car hops, those Brunswick High girls that used to pinch my cheeks and rub my head and make me giggle and blush. Alas, all good things must end. My grandfather retired , sold the business and moved away. Last summer, a camping trip brought me near to Brunswick, so I went to the Fat Boy for the first time in over forty years. Holy timewarp Batman! it looked exactly the same. So in I went in (this time through the front door) Same smells, same sounds, same menu. So let's cut to the chase, food's still good (it's a drive-in, not an upscale restraurant) prices are very fair, people are friendly. About those fries, bagged and frozen just like back then, but remember, fifty years ago frozen fries were high tech and a big novelty. That said, get the onion rings. read more

Put your headlights on and a car hop will come to offer a menu, take your order, etc. There is minimal seating inside. I don't think they've changed anything here since 1955 except the light bulbs. They make their lobster rolls with mayo, and I prefer just butter, so I decided on a cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. Is this the best burger and fries you've ever had? No, you can't beat the prices. The food is good, but you'll find better - and pay more for it. Our car hop waitress was great, and we enjoyed the overall experience. Whenever I visit my family in Maine, we visit Fat Boy! Well, that is if it's between Memorial Day and Labor Day because YES, as a poster questioned previously...it is a seasonal place. It would be way too cold to sit there in the winter months, so it's certainly a treat in the summer to take in a great Fat Boy meal! [Yes, they do have some inside seating, but I would imagine that they get most of their business from the parking lot] Their Haddock sandwiches are my favorite thing on the menu! So yummy!!! And Fat Boy onion rings are the ONLY onion rings I will eat. Don't know what they put in that batter, but it's the best anywhere! We are coming up very shortly to visit...before Labor Day...and Fat Boy is on our list of things to do!!! read more

Love Fat Boy's for their cheap food and Americana decor. The burgers are delish and hit the spot when all you really want is a greasy burger with some fries. Onion rings and seafood are good too. I've been going to Fat Boy Drive In since the dating days of my early teens. I'm 72 now. It was where you went after an early date for a frappe or hamburger. Yes there is grease and calories galore but that is what it is all about. Just got back today from having my fix of onion rings and a Blt washed down with an iced tea. My friend and I showed up in a box truck and parked in a few spots due to the size of the truck. When we went in they were very polite in explaining that the spots were considered tables at a drive in. We moved the truck to another spot on the other side of the building. When we came back in they were so pleased and thankful that we were understanding and moved the truck that they gave each of us a free frappe. The entire staff was amazing. I had a couple burgers and my buddy had a double burger and some onion rings. The food was spectacular. And very inexpensive. When we checked out the woman was very nice and welcomed us back and told us to have a safe trip. This place is top notch for sure. Situated across from BNAS and up the road from Bowdoin college, this venerable car hop is quick and efficient. You can eat inside and I would highly recommend that or at least at a picnic table. The menu is faded and, for some reason, the restaurant features a BLT made from Canadian bacon. Unless you're a fan, I would avoid it since the point of a BLT is the crisp bacon that offsets the rest of the ingredients. The last few visits we have become fans of the haddock dinner and you can opt out of boring fries for delicious onion rings. Service isn't exactly all hugs and kisses but does get the job done. The servers at Cameron's down the street are much friendlier. Thumbs down for the tartar sauce from Ken's. Cole Slaw is pretty decent. Don't drive off with the squeeze bottle of ketchup though. And be prepared to take pics of the awesome sky over BNAS. All that open space creates some great photo opportunities. Cash only but ATM inside. read more

What a fun place to eat. Have been so many many times and finally am writing a review. The staff is always nice and friendly and do a great job. Their BLT is so good as is the fried shrimp and anything. I just tried their fried green beans and they were wonderful. This place is the greatest for a good inexpensive lunch. I love having to go to Brunswick cause I know there's a great meal waiting at Fat Boy Drive In. I prefer to eat inside, have eaten outside and been warned by the waitress to be careful the sea gull who is perched on the sign or the roof doesn't steal any food left on the tray. Drives my dog nuts when the gull flies so close and is good for a laugh. read more

I think this place is more about the experience, as a local who makes it a point to stop in at least once a year (more for the kids) I am not all that impressed. Everytime I go there we get attacked by seagulls who try to steal our food off the tray, the burger come out really greasy, and the chicken taste like it was deep fried with the seafood. Yet I make it a point to go every year, because their frapps are quite good, and they are priced right, however if your a person with any digestion problems like my young daughter, you made need to forgo the experience of eating in you car and take it to go, if not expect to be looking for restrooms, very quickly.
