This place does certain things really well - really good curry beef puffs, sponge cakes, and various pineapple buns (plain and with different fillings inside). I also like getting small hot milk teas here - it's very hot, the way they make it back in HK. For steamed cha siu baos though, I prefer going to Mei Lai Wah down the block. Fay Da always seems pretty busy, but especially in the morning, so know what you want when you go up to the counter (if you're ordering drinks/desserts on display; the baked goods are self-serve)! read more

Overall, they're just ok. They have all the basic Chinatown baked goods like butter rolls and coconut buns and meat buns and such. Quality isn't that great. I mean, if you want some buns, go to Mei Lai Wah. But the best thing about this place is the mango cake! In between the thin layers of sponge cake there's sort of a mango mousse filling. It's hard to explain. But it's yummy. There was period of my life when I was massively obsessed with mangoes and made my parents get this as my birthday cake every single year. I'd like to give them 2.5 stars, (the extra half star just for the mango cake) so... I guess I'll round up. read more

This review is for their milk tea and fruit smoothies. The milk tea sucks, no tea or milk flavor at all. Half the cup is ice even though I asked for little ice! The kiwi smoothie was the worst! Tasted like they just threw the whole kiwi in there without taking the skin off. It was like swallowing saw dust! Never again will I come to this place for their drinks. read more

Such mixed reviews. Stopped by and got some sort of cheesecake w/ berries on top (mainly bc my gf ordered it and it looked too delicious to not get it as well). They packaged everything up so well that by the time I got home 4 hours later and finally had time to devour it, it was still well intact. And ooh simply delicious. Just the right amount of sweetness. For $2.75, I'm lucky I don't live there or I'd probably stop by more often to order it and get fat =P read more

I was hesitating in giving a "ok" or up to 4 stars.. since yelp doesn't have .5 rating.. I guess Fay Da has the best bakeries in Chinatown.. that's why I gave 4 stars.. I tried any of the pastries.. It was decent and above.. I always came here during the weekends or at night and get it for breakfast tomorrow.. I haven't get to try their steam buns.. Ever since I came to US.. I haven't had steam red bean bun... I really wanna try but I always head to Fay Da after dinner.. and i am always full with food already.. I dislike their drinks.. that's what made me hesitating.. Milk tea is just light cream and a tea bag.. I guess this is how they did it.. but I was surprised seeing this.. is ok.. I got their big coconut rolls and taro mochi. $4.5 in total :) Most places offer original white mochi with peanuts inside or the mango mochi with mango inside. It's less common to find taro mochi with taro inside. Since I'm a big fan of taro, I like this place :) read more

Very good bakery, Would highly recommend coming here while your visiting Chinatown in New York. First thing i noticed when I came in: Locals. Locals show that the business is a great place to go to, therefore the food must be bomb. At first, I took a try and tried to fit the pastries into a wax paper bag. The bakery lady saw me struggling, so she just helped me out. Hence, service. I can help but laugh when some "gwailo" came into the store tho, and looked at the baked PORK buns and said to the bakery lady, "so...what's in these buns?" People. Overall great place to go. I usually don't like cakes and desserts from Chinese bakeries, especially when a number of Italian bakeries are just down the block with my favorite cannolis, gelatos and more. But Fay Da has become my go to place for some good and inexpensive desserts. They have the best mousse cake/cups in the area, the mango mousse cake really tastes like mango. For smaller pastries, the mango mochi is chewy and delicious, the baby cheesecake is soft and light, and the monte blanc while not as good as some other places, is like half the price. All of these pastries are under $2 each. Their bread pastries are on the expensive side compared to other smaller Chinese bakeries but they have some original choices. The hot dog bun, raisin and cheese bun and lemon bun (not so original) are among my favorites. read more

Cheap, tasty, clean, and bright. My four year old loved getting to pick out her buns from the cases, and my husband was delighted when we came home with hot chicken steamed buns. Also, if, like me, you really like the crunchy topped egg custard buns, JACKPOT. My family refers to them as the buns of my happiness, and theirs were light, crunchy, soft, and sweet. Fay Da is near and dear to my heart. I've been getting my Asian pastry fix at this chain since I was 10 and my parents made weekly trips to Flushing. The Manhattan Chinatown location has the same assortment of pastries, breads, and buns, and they're all great. The pork floss bun is so much better than anything that can be found in Connecticut, and my favorite bread, the pea and scallion twist (formerly the ham and scallion twist) is still awesome all these years later. No Chinatown run is complete without my Fay Da baked goods. read more

This place has great baked goods, best of all, they carry fresh steamed buns! My favorite is their vegetable pork steamed buns and their bbq pork steamed buns (char siu bao). You do have to ask one of the staffs to help you with getting those buns out of the stove though, but man those warm buns taste so good (I think they cost less than $1)! Their shredded dried pork bread (yok song bao) is delicious, napoleon baked good (na por lun) is one of my favorite as well, and their mango mochi with coconut shreds is definitely worth a try (they are not too sweet and have real pieces of mangos in it). Though their pineapple bread (bo lor bao) is mediocre (still searching for the perfect pineapple bread in Chinatown), overall, awesome bakery and cheap bread! read more

Love Fay Da. Been going for years. Knowing how crowded Chinatown can be, especially on the weekends, I always go first thing in the morning on a Saturday for an assortment of goods to bring to my parents house. I usually opt for the steamed pork buns, egg tarts, hot dogs wrapped in bread - - not sure what else to call it, mocha cake rolls and their individual desserts (cheesecakes, mousse cake, etc) which all look impeccable and taste extremely light. I've gotten one of their white frosted cakes with gelatinous fruit on top and have to say it's one of my faves. The cake itself isn't dense and buttery, instead it's light and moist - - almost juicy, and the frosting isn't overly sweet, more light a light whipped cream. read more

I'm almost sure this place is a chain, but it makes practically the same things as any other Chinese bakery in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, etc. The prices are really great. I love their egg custard tart - $1. It's perfect for just eating on the street. They also have a good selection that you can pick for yourself in the back from hot dog buns, cakes, plain buns, etc. This unfortunately, is a very small bakery so you might find yourself scrambling for seats, but they have take out baggies for your pastry - which is just perfect for walking around and munching on! read more

My go-to bakery when I head to Chinatown with or without anybody. Just have to go there! It's crowded almost ALL the time; even if you go pretty late in the day (7pm?) it is still filled with people! Then again, the area is pretty small. Read this so that when you go there, you know exactly what to do to avoid staying in crowds long. Most of the beautifully decorated cake slices are $1.95-$4 tops. I always get the chocolate cake and it is fantastic! I also urge you to try their Chicken Puff and Curry Beef Puff! Very full of flavor! They range from $1.50-$2 I believe. When you first enter, head for the back to get a tray. Help yourself to the things you can access by yourself (breads all the way in the back and the puffs to the side in a heated container.) Then, with your tray, head to the cashier and ask for whatever cake/pastry you want in the refrigerator case. When I was there, people (mostly natives of the area) were being very rude and trying to skip me. I don't know if I just LOOKED like I wasn't on line but people there are usually really rude, loud, and slow-moving. Maybe because they're old? :p That aside, I urge you to take everything TO GO. Unless you're ok with crunching into tight spaces and eating with strangers. TL;DR? Grab and go, it is crowded. Pastries and meat puffs are delicious and affordable! Walking through NYC's Chinatown for the first time, I definitely had to have some fruit smoothies with some boba. I ordered a Mango-Lychee smoothie and in the process I forgot to ask for boba. So at the last second I ordered boba and was given a smirk. I can understand that I should have said it before when I initially ordered, but that's just unacceptable. Someone could argue that NYC is a fast-paced place and prolonging my order might deserve a smirk, but there was no one else in line behind me. I am a huge fan of chinese buns and I thought this place was only OK. Bun quality was not great Eggtart: Not very flavorful. The crust was not very crispy and the egg filling rather bland. Sponge cake: Terrible. While these were soft, they were very bland. It was almost like tasting paper. Sweet top pineapple bun: This was the only good bun I bought from this store. These lying bums. Overpriced and totally inedible. Once I got a steamed chicken bun and lady behind the counter said that it was really chicken but it was really pork. The " Chicken" was ozzing with these juices that produced a very pungent smell and it was just very unappealing. most of these "western" style patries like napoleon cake or crossiants are fabrications. Tasteless and totally made out of things that you don't want in your body. The chocolate espresso cake taste like dutch rubber from papua new guinea. The birthday cakes ughhhh the worst. If you go early enough, they give you a complimentary copy of the day's World Journal (weekday $0.50, yearly subscription $200), which I don't read, but is super nice and local-feel of them. Large, hot milk tea is $2. Same for a large, hot lemon tea. Got both without sugar and they were spot on for walking around NY on a chilly March morning. They have a great selection of bao baos and cakes. The baos are mostly 1.35, some are 1.75. Cash only place, cuz it's Chinatown. And if the staff seems rude, they're not. It's just Chinatown. Bad pineapple bun = bad bakery. Just kidding, well, sort of. For a cantonense bakery, the pineapple bun was so bad that it compelled me to write a review even though I spent less than $5 in here- For those who are unfamiliar with a pineapple bun here's a little breakdown: 1. it doesn't have any pineapple ingredients 2. The pineapple part refers to to sugar/butter crust on top of the bread that may resemble a pineapple 3. There sometimes is a filling - sweet/savory. 4. It's a local Hong Kong delicacy - offered in bakeries and char chan tangs (tea restaurants) Unfortunately, my pineapple bun experience was pretty miserable - rather than reminding me of home through what should have been little bites of joy, I took a bite and found it to be virtually inedible. I'm not a new yorker - from maryland so i have to live with day-old buns from maria's - so for me, any bakery that sells fresh curry puffs and chicken pies and a wide assortment of breads a la the kind you can find anywhere in hong kong makes me smile. went here on saturday morning, tried Taipan Bakery the next morning around the corner - it was crowded as hell with little old ladies pushing and hitting their way past me with shopping bags. So i went back to Fay Da, which was not as busy, but, another favorite of mine that I've been going to for years. I love their strawberry mousses, nai chas, hot ovaltine, and mango smoothies. taro balls (very dense but just the perfect chewy/fluffy/stickiness ratio. another favorite is the japanese cheesecake - so light and fluffy. still cheesy not spongey. i dont really like the tapioca balls in bubble tea - here they tasted funny, like herbal tasting. not a fan of that, but you can get any of their drinks bubble-free. read more

There are a lot of Chinese bakeries in Chinatown so you have an amazing selection of bake goods depending on your cravings. I love this bakery fir their bubble teas and the pineapple buns. The egg custard tarts are good but not the best in my opinion. Servuce is like any other bakery in Chinatown, rush rush and beware of the elderly as they will just jump the line. Great for breakfast as the coffee is good and the bake goods, best part is you pay a fraction of going to Starbucks. No wifi but plenty of seating. Not exactly a place I would have visited based on my own curiosities. Luckily, a co-worker told me to give the place (and a Chinese bakery) a try. To my great surprise, I was greeted with an abundance of tasty Chinese inspired baked goods. I didn't even know wehere to start.....light pastries, ham and cheese croissants, and raisin and cheese thingies. MOST impressive is how INEXPENSIVE all the treats are. For about $6-7 dollars you can treat yourself to a nice full belly without feeling super bloated. The location is small and has been crowded on every visit but it is Chinatown which is normally busy as usual. There was no restroom (a biggie) for me to judge but the staff was friendly and I like the whole self-service thongs which allow you to choose your own treats and pack your own treats in little wax paper bags. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in lower Manhattan. read more

Great place for asian baked goods. There isnt much difference in their buns in comparison to the other asian bakery just around the corner. (Well maybe one, they offer the taro puff pastry that I love.) They do run out of the popular items earlier in the day. SO make sure you come early to get the buns. This place is pretty good. I would give it 3.5 stars. Their pastries are delicious! I tried the chocolate moose cake, the mango cake, and tiramisu. I fell in love with the tiramisu! I have tried better tasting tiramisu but at the time (my first time) it was the best treat I ever have! I thought i was in heaven and devoured it slowly, ignoring my surroundings and wandered into dreamland. (laugh out loud). Overall, this place is pretty decent to go to. I like it. I like their pastries even though it is a tad bit pricey but it is to be expected from Manhattan so I am not complaining. Plus Little Italy is just a walk away so their pastries are just as pricey. Trying to find a good bakery in the midst of Chinatown seems easy enough, but the ones I've seen all have workers who have to pick up the bread for you. I personally like to do it myself because there's so many choices and I just want to use the clippers myself! Got my hot dog bread, curry bread and egg tarts. Was so craving them! yum! My coworker loves their coffee. I don't drink it but I know she buys one everyday. This bakery is on the pricey side. it's over $1 for a hot small hot milk tea, they use lipton tea bags (they have a sour taste after) so I would get a hot ling mok or horlick. Their buns are good. Out of all the ones I brought I never had a problem. The only problem that was confusing is that I didn't know, am I suppose to self serve my buns. I thought I was suppose too and I saw other people doing it. Fay Da has an A rating, DP has B. Fay Da less a smaller shop, but far less crowded than neighbor next door (so quick service?) I tried the Tuna bum and loved it. Not loaded with mayo, great texture and flavor. $1.6 for a snack that fill me up at 2 pm, and I am still not hungry at 5:12 pm. What a winner. read more

Overall, I find this place quite pleasant for ambience, good seating, and cleanliness but the individual pastries and buns are lacking in a number elements. For the buns, they're kept in a steamer but it's hard to figure out which bun is which aside from the roast pork bun where the red interior is visible. I happened to choose the pork and vegetable bun but the filling was really sparse and there was a lot more cabbage to pork ratio. I also tried a taro puff which tasted too artificial and too sweet. The crust wasn't that crispy or flakey either. Finally, I tasted a lotus seed preserved egg pastry which totally didn't taste like lotus seed and had small flecks of pink unknown things... This place is a very casual bakery; very similar as the other Chinese bakery. I do not like their service, which leads me going on the fact that this place the staffs do not service you; it is a do it yourself kind of bakery. I find customers touching a bun/ bread or custard and not getting it. They do not have much staffs working here and it usually takes forever for the staffs to make the drinks for you. But I do love their Chunky Almond Bubble tea and it is the only reason that makes me going back. So if any one where to go....try the Almond Bubble Tea. read more
