I was surprised with the prices - around 3 dollars for a hefty pork bun? 2 something for the coconut bun and half loaf of milk bread for also about 3 dollars?? I love the self service system as it makes it very easy to go in, pick your treats and check out. They also offer a variety of drinks, including boba. We got the roasted pork bun (super soft and slightly sweet bun and delicious pork filling, surprisingly very light), coconut bun (another amazing bun with just enough sweetness from the coconut filling. Reminds me a lot of pastry goods you would find at a Brazilian bakery somehow and transported me to my childhood. This place is my childhood. My grandma used to take me here in the city and bring back 10 egg tarts because I loved them so much! To this day, these egg tarts still succeed in their delicious flavor, melt in your mouth taste, and reminder of my childhood. Their dan tats/egg tarts are classic -- buttery puff pastry crust outside, milky egg tart within. This Bakery has been my go to spot when I visit China Town. I would definitely recommend trying their soy milk with boba. It is very affordable at $3 for a small or $3.50 for a large. My fam loves it because it's the perfect sweetness (elders like their sweets on the lighter side) and it's a perfect mousse and cake hybrid. Fay Da is an old-school Hong Kong bakery with 10 locations (fayda.com) where you'll find all the classics -- e.g., char siu bao, cocktail and pineapple buns, and wife cake more accurately yet less descriptively labeled "roast pork," "milk cream," and "sweet topping" buns; and "melon cake" -- in addition to more cosmopolitan offerings such as croissants, ensaymadas, tiramisu, and jiggly Japanese cheesecake, as well as originals such as the tuna bun that so many folks have posted about here. (How's that for a long opening sentence?) The store is very compact. Upon entering, you'll encounter to your left a tiny two-table eat-in section next to a counter that holds a carousel of hot pies (such as the popular beef curry puffs) and a steamy case of steamed buns. Along the back left wall is a shelf of packaged cookies and cakes, which faces the main attraction. Here, to your right, is a self-serve case of buns, sandwiches, and cakes. Take a tray and a pair of tongs to make your selections, which the ladies at the counter will ring up for you. They will also add any of the fancier patisserie items (which self serve would destroy) you'd like from an adjacent case, as well as milk tea or coffee in tiny-looking pre-Starbucks portions. This place has always been a staple of Chinatown since I was a kid. Growing up, it's sometimes looked as the bakery "next to Tai Pan Bakery." But this place stands on its own and some of its buns rival those of Tai Pan Bakery. Fay Da has multiple locations too but this is the OG and its great I came back here for the curry beef puff which is surprisingly $2.25 now. When I was growing up it was closer to $1-$1.5. The bakery knows the hype and it even labels it on its displays that it was featured on Buzzfeed's videos. Curry puff was amazing. I actually had been to Fay Da (one of the branches, I forget which one) years ago, but thought it was very average and wrote it off. It was only after watching the review from buzzfeed that I decided to come back here and try some of their baked offerings that I decided that I had a more favorable opinion of this place than I had originally formulated. On your first trip here, skip the breads and move straight to the baked goods box which is heated by a lamp. In particular, make sure you try the baked curry puff and the bbq pork puff. Both are extremely good, very flakey (in a good way), and super affordable. I think that the bbq pork puff can run a little on the dry side, so you might want to couple this with a soy milk (which I don't recall seeing in the store during my visit). Still, these are some very good options. You can start with these options first then work your way to some of the other breads here. I like the tuna bread in particular, but I think the egg tarts and things like that are just about the same here as they are in other places. They have a cash only policy (this could vary depending on which branch you go to), but since this is a cash only neighborhood and not a restaurant, it can be forgiven. read more

Loving the Egg Tarts at Fay Da. This Chinese bakery offers loads of goodies. Little seating is available and they are usually taken. You help yourself to most of the bakery items. Trays, tongs and plastic bags are within reach. Larger cakes and certain baked items are behind a glass case in front of the cashier. You have to ask an employee for assistance on those items. Their Egg Tarts are some of my faves. The crust is slightly crisp, fresh and lightly buttery. The egg custard is creamy, slightly sweet, smooth and had a nice resistance. Beautiful egg flavor. It wasn't watery like some others I've tried. Their Steamed Buns and Puff Pastries are good too. Similar to most Chinese bakeries around Chinatown, this place can get very packed. I'm not big for sweets, but I did enjoy the custard cup (sorta like a Portuguese pastel de nata), but the coconut cream bun was less to my liking -- kind of like eating creamed sweet butter on coconut wonder bread. This Chinese bakery is another favorite of mine! They have a good amount of locations in Flushing as well and they never fail to disappoint with their good amount of bread offerings. I also LOVE red bean pastries and they FILL IT UP with the red bean! This location is a bit smaller but still has a lot of variety but not as many different types of egg tarts as compared to Tai Pan. However, I love their egg tart! It has a cookie crust and the egg custard is baked in so well and there is lots of filling and a perfect layer of crust to hold it together. I also love their pineapple type buns with the perfect crumbly topping. The prices are affordable and the service is also very quick for everyone who comes for the grab and go breakfast. read more
