Eating here reminded me of going to a friend's house in high school with an affectionate, hospital father who wanted to pull out all the stops to entertain graciously. Christian, our waiter who clearly had a lot of stake in the restaurants charm, made us feel welcomed by asking our names and chatting with us rather than just waiting for our order. Throughout the meal we talked about where we're from and where we like to vacation. The restaurant is adorned in pictorial memories of hosting delegates, actors, celebrities, and even presidents. Our meal was incredible. After walking half of the freedom trail in frigid conditions, warm, comfort food was salvation. I ordered the lasagna and eggplant Parmesan. Both were delicious. We were walking through the north end trying to find a spot for a late lunch and were kind of on the lookout for something homey feeling. Nothing too big or crazy, but cozy and welcoming. We initially walked by when I peaked in and saw some tables filled and decided let's try this spot. We were immediately welcomed by who we assume is the owner. He was extremely friendly and throughout our experience cracked jokes with us. He gave us lovely recommendations and kind service throughout our meal. We tried the espresso martini and the peanut butter martini. Both creamy and delicious! They give you that delicious herb and evoo dip with bread which is one of my favorite parts about dining at Italian restaurants. And it was great by the way! Let's talk food! 10/10! The fried calamari was so crisp and tender! Like one of the best fry's I've had on a calamari in a while! We ordered the side of meatballs and I was very close to drinking the marinara it came in. We also did the lobster ravioli in the pesto cream sauce. It was fresh and light, which is what I really enjoyed about our meal. It didn't feel heavy but it was filling! And of course we ended the meal with the BEST cannoli! Again, not too heavy, it was lighter and I really enjoyed it! We're looking forward to returning in the very near future! read more

Went on a Friday night since we were going out afterwards and this was one of the few places with reservations available in the north end. The decorations were super cute but it was very brightly lit inside so not ideal if you're aiming for a romantic date night spot! They provide bread and an olive oil dip with spices which was nice. The portions for the entrees were on the smaller for the prices and the pollo Lucia was unfortunately pretty dry. So I went here on a date, and the date may have been a bust, but you know wasn't a bust? This restaurant. This restaurant was BUSSIN. (Look, as of writing, I'm 34, almost 35. Let me use this word all I can.) The best part of the night was definitely our waiter. I believe his name was Christian, and this man did no wrong to us. He recommended the Boston Garden, which was veal, bacon, eggplant, and pasta. I'm normally not a veal fan, but I didn't even notice the texture that normally turns me off of it. He also recommended the lasagna, which would've made my Italian grandfather proud. He didn't even point to the overly expensive things; he just pointed to what was actually good. We weren't even hungry at the end, but he still convinced us to get a cannoli, and boy, am I glad he did, since it was one of the best I've had in a very long time. It was so much fresher and not overly-sweet like some other spots like to do. The best part of the night is that my date didn't want to take the leftovers home, so I did and had a wonderful dinner the second night. Date or not, I recommend coming here. It's rare for me to find a red sauce that reminds me of something my grandfather made, as most Italian-American restaurants love to load up with garlic to the point you walk away with a lingering acidic burn on your tongue. We made a 4:00 p.m. reservation so we could enjoy an early dinner before a show. Unfortunately, we hit unexpected traffic on the way, so we called the restaurant to let them know we'd be about 15-20 minutes late. The person who answered asked how many were in our party. When I said two, he replied, "No problem!" and hung up. When we arrived around 4:25, a couple without a reservation had just been seated at a beautiful table by the windows overlooking the water. The manager greeted us, looked up our reservation, and immediately said, "You're late. I just gave them your table." I reminded him that we had called ahead, but he dismissed it with a wave and said he'd find us another table. Instead, we were seated in a cold back room with no windows, no view, and a wobbly table. It was a disappointing start, but we tried to make the best of it. We ordered two espresso martinis after reading glowing reviews, but they were disappointing--more like chocolate milk heavily dusted with cocoa powder than a freshly made cocktail. They arrived almost immediately and tasted like they were made from a pre-made mix. At $18.50 each, we expected much better. Things got worse when a party of six, who also didn't have a reservation, complained about their seating and were promptly moved to tables by the windows. That made it even harder to understand why our reservation--and our courtesy call--had apparently counted for so little. When we were ready to order, I asked if I could add grilled chicken or a chicken cutlet to one of the vegetarian dishes. Our server said the kitchen would not do that. It seemed like a simple modification, given that chicken and cutlets are all over the menu. The experience continued to deteriorate. While we were looking over the menu, the manager repeatedly paced behind our table and looked over my husband's shoulder as he searched his phone for another restaurant. He interrupted us several times to ask whether we had ordered yet. At one point, he even told us, "Make sure you order dessert. Our cannolis are the best in Boston." A few minutes later, he returned, commented that our martinis had "gone fast," and then asked us another question. Because of his very thick accent, I honestly didn't understand what he said. I thought he was asking whether I was older, so I looked at him, confused. Instead of simply repeating himself, he rolled his eyes, sighed dramatically, and snapped, "Have you ordered yet?!" I answered, "No." He looked annoyed, walked away, and almost immediately our waitress came back to take our order. By that point, our experience had become so uncomfortable that we asked for the check instead. Our waitress was gracious but concerned that she might get into trouble if we left without ordering. We agreed to speak with the manager. He didn't even come all the way to our table before announcing from several feet away, "OK! You want a table in front. I'll give you a table in front! Let's go!" We told him that wasn't the issue and that we simply wanted to leave. He either wasn't listening or wasn't interested in listening. What followed only made matters worse. He insisted on removing our drinks from the bill, repeatedly saying that if we left, he would "pay for them out of my own pocket. But if we stayed, we were going to move." I told him I wanted to make sure our waitress still received the tip she deserved because none of this was her fault. He dismissed my concern and told me not to worry about it. Meanwhile, our waitress was apologizing for an experience she didn't create and even tried to send us out with complimentary pizzelles. All of this transpired in a matter of 20-25 minutes, which was enough to determine that we will never return. read more
