This restaurant has received rave reviews for several years during Boston Restaurant Week, but I honestly thought it was just average...seriously overrated. Bread Sticks: Surprisingly, the bread sticks served before the meal were the best. Very crispy, and the pesto provided a rich yet mild pine nut aroma. Whole Duck Leg Confit: The flavor profile was fine; the plum sauce was refreshing and helped cut through the richness. However, the duck leg was a bit dry and tough, especially the edges, clearly overcooked. My favorite part was the cool, sweet touch of fresh fig. Crisped Haddock: A huge plate, the portion size was impeccable. The haddock was generally tender enough, but layering it with fried green tomatoes and grit made it overwhelmingly heavy and greasy...I was completely overwhelmed by the end. Pistachio Gelato with Cassis: Using pistachio for a light and restrained flavor, with the sweet and sour cassis syrup as the main taste, is also a good approach. The latter, however, was too sweet and strong, almost completely masking the former, and it became a bit cloying towards the end. Cappuccino: The light milk foam and gentle coffee aroma somewhat redeemed it for an Italian restaurant. Finally, let's talk about the service. Although there weren't many diners, the welcoming area was completely empty; I had to go and ask a waiter to be seated. The duck confit arrived less than two minutes after I ordered, but the bread hadn't even arrived yet, making me suspect it was reserved for other tables. After waiting a while, I had to ask a waiter to get the bread. The plate holding the ice cream cup had obvious stains. While I was eating, the next table experienced problems such as the wrong dish being served, dessert being forgotten, and an unidentified black powder in their water... Compared to winter, the Dine Out Boston summer felt much less appealing, which is a trend that has become increasingly apparent in recent years. Overall, most of the menus and dishes were edible, acceptable but unremarkable, resulting in a mediocre four-star rating. I decided to try this restaurant because I saw its consistently positive reviews on RedNote for many years, but I didn't expect it to be like this again... While the prices during Dine Out Boston are certainly affordable, if you can't get the care and experience that matches the restaurant's reputation, then such an event seems to have lost its original purpose and value. read more

Visited Boston for my brother's graduation in which he insisted going to this restaurant because supposedly Nancy Pelosi loves this restaurant. Came here Monday night before my parents, husband, and I had to fly out the next day. The history of this restaurant as well as location is interesting as it used to be a jailhouse converted to a hotel. The entire hotel is jail themed too so you have a bar named the Alibi, another one named The Clink and the restaurant named Scampo means 'escape' in Italian. As far as the restaurant goes, the food is pretty good. The only was that we were originally here for all the all you can eat pasta on Mondays but I didn't see anywhere on their reservation system that meant the lounge side was the only one that had it. Apparently the dining table side is à la carte ordering only. I did see on the reservation system there was a selection for each side, but I wish they did mention the all you can eat was lounge side only. Maybe it was somewhere on their website but I couldn't find it. That said, we stayed on the dining table side as it turns out we weren't really in the mood for all you can eat. The pastas were really good though. I got their carbonara while my mom got the meat sauce. My husband got their vegetarian ravioli while my brother got the duck and my dad got their fish. My mom said as far as her meat sauce/bolognese pasta went, it was one of the best pastas she ever had. She doesn't like bland pasta with sauce on top and prefers the sauce cooked with the pasta which this place does. My carbonara was one of the better ones I've had too. Though it's not the most authentic. Traditional carbonara generally uses egg yolk in which this places uses heavy cream. But considering I'm pregnant, it worked out. While most places drench their carbonara with sauce, somehow mine was all at the bottom in which I actually didn't mind that since it can get heavy when drenched. So I just ate from top to bottom which made it much lighter. My husband's vegetarian ravioli was a bit lackluster though. I'm not entirely sure what's with Italian/Italian American places only giving a few pieces. He said he wish there was more. Then we ordered a lobster pizza as they're supposedly famous for that. Um...it's not bad. But really overhyped. Like the topping itself isn't bad, but it does run bland. On top of that the pizza isn't really a pizza. It's not the traditional crust you would think of where it's bready or puffy like Regina pizza. It's a cracker crust type of deal. Honestly it's more flatbread style and then some as opposed to pizza aside from its round shape. So while most entrees were good, there were just a couple that fell short. Like I won't say to not try the lobster pizza as that is a rare find. Just don't expect it to be an actual pizza. Service wise, the restaurant was perfect as our waiter was really nice and attentive. Very nice restaurant with a large bar area. Decor is upscale and trendy. Located in an interesting and unique hotel. You can dress however you wish, but most people do dress very nicely. Food is delicious, but how could it not be with Lydia at the helm. She makes you feel in awe, just by her presence. The service is a perfect combination of attentive, yet not intrusive. Right around the corner from Mass General Hospital, very nice selection of Italian dishes. I had the Cod, I didn't like the sweetness of the dish. My husband had the pork chop and reported it to be really good. Tuna tartare won the appetizer battle as the calamari had a heavy coating and was served room temperature. Bread pudding was OK. I was here on recent early evening to meet up with two friends for a drink. Both these women are friends I've known for years as we worked together at the local nearby hospital. Two of us are now retired. I had not been back to Scampo since before the pandemic and it was good to be back to see the lovely and familiar space. As mentioned before, Scampo is housed inside the quite spectacular Liberty Hotel. The architecture of the hotel both inside and out is extraordinary. This one-time prison has found a new and exciting life in Boston. I am old enough to remember when this still a prison and you could often see inmates standing in front of the barred windows looking down at life below in Boston. The bartender we had the other night told us she was new but you couldn't tell as she served us kindly and expertly. One friend ordered some drink I hadn't heard of but this bartender knew exactly what she was wanted and was able to make the drink. I had wine. The 3rd friend ordered another cocktail that escapes me now. They have a selection of appetizers you can order at the bar; when we arrived dinner service at not begun but I know from the past that some people choose to eat dinner at the bar. It's a lively scene but a space in which it is still easy to hear each other unlike too many other places these days. You won't go wrong with any of the apps on the menu but I will recommend the classic pizza or the lobster pizza. Sharing a couple of those is divine. The naan is also delicious. We arrived just before 5pm and it was relatively quiet but very quickly filled up within the half hour. It seems this is still a post-work hot spot as it once was for the 3 of us. The cocktails are not inexpensive although on par with what one pays at a higher end place in Boston. There is also an extensive wine menu. The ambiance inside the bar/restaurant remains lovely. I am a fan of the big copper light pendants around the bar area. The 3 of us had a delightful time catching up with one another. Hearing post-pandemic stories from the one friend who is still working at the hospital reinforced how happy I am to be retired. I will say that working on-site in the hospital through the very frightening days early on in the pandemic was enough to push myself right out the door in mid-2021. There are things I miss though but not enough to wish I was back in the thick of things. The 3 of us will return in the coming weeks I am sure. The next time we plan to stay for dinner. Either way, drinks and an assortment of appetizers at the bar, or a full sit-down dinner at Scampo is still a good idea. You really can't go wrong here. Risotto was decent. It comes full of mushrooms and just a tiny piece of lobster, about the size of a nickel. It has a lot of flavor but the mushrooms tasted as if they weren't rinsed off enough. The pumpkin ravioli was amazing, it only had 4-6 per order which was not very much for the pricing. Sauce was flavorful and creamy. The Tuna tartare was decent but had a lot of cilantro. It was very over powering for someone who doesn't fair well with cilantro. The concord grape cocktail was good but not very strong. The gin was not potent and the grape flavor reminded me of my childhood. Its a nostalgic drink. Dessert was so good! The spiced apple filling was too sweet. The burrata was very small so if you are looking for a light appetizer this is it! Ambiance was ok. It was dark and romantic but very loud and crowded. It is not a good intimate restaurant and the sound bounces. We sat next to a group of very loud women. Everything was clean and well presented. Service was good. The atmosphere and location in the Liberty Hotel is excellent. Food is good, but I wouldn't say it was great for the price. Our waiter was super nice. However, after he described the charred spaghetti all' assassina in such a way that we all got really excited, when it came it wasn't anything special. We then felt like he could have sold us anything and that felt a wee bit disingenuous. Also, you have to order salads as additional side dishes. And the tiramisu was meh. Great food and beautiful space, but surprisingly amateur service for a Lydia Shire restaurant We visited Scampo as a large group celebrating my nephew's college graduation, and while the food and atmosphere delivered, the service fell far short of what you'd expect from a Lydia Shire spot -- especially at this price point. The positives deserve credit: the drinks (once they arrived) were well made, the food was genuinely tasty, and the venue is beautiful, warm, and perfect for a celebratory dinner. Our appetizers were excellent, and the carpaccio was a standout. But the service was surprisingly uncoordinated -- almost amateur -- which created a series of frustrations throughout the night: * My nephew ordered a margarita that never came. After mentioning it to another staff member, the drink finally appeared -- but only after our dinner wine had already been delivered (which we ordered well after the margarita). At that point he no longer wanted it, so we canceled. Ten minutes later, another margarita showed up, long after the cancellation. * We specifically asked for the wine to be served with dinner, but it arrived well before the meal. * Three people ordered the Sunday chicken Parmesan special. Two plates came out with generous portions, while the third was noticeably smaller in both size and thickness. When we raised this with the manager, he insisted the portions are weighed and should be identical. After we showed him the clear difference, his response was simply: "What do you want me to do?" Not exactly the hospitality or professionalism you expect at a restaurant of this caliber. The food and setting were strong enough to keep this from being a negative experience, but the service issues -- especially at a high‑end, Lydia Shire restaurant -- made the evening feel uneven. With better coordination and more thoughtful management, this could easily be a five‑star destination. My friends and I decided to visit Scampo on a Saturday afternoon. Although we made reservations, it wasn't needed at all. The food at the restaurant was alright. The spaghetti, in my opinion, was rather bland and very oily, but the crackling added a significant improvement. I think more seasoning would've been great for this dish. We were recommended to try the lobster pizza, which turned out to be underwhelming with not much flavor. I also found the pizza not cooked to my liking, as the sauce kept falling off my slices. The salmon was okay overall, but not exciting. On a positive note, the service was excellent. Our server was enthusiastic and attentive to our requests. I think this place is definitely worth a visit when you come to Boston. It is upscale dining and you can spend a pretty penny if you aren't careful but it's worth it for good authentic Italian food. I came here with family for a Saturday night. You do need to make reservations and they will charge per person who doesn't show. Onto the food: The breadsticks and pesto they give in the beginning are pretty good! We got the lobster pizza to share, and I was expecting it to be on the oilier side but it was great! We also got the tempura green beans, trofie pesto pasta, and pork chop. Green beans: the beans themselves were great-the dipping sauces were both a bit too far on either side for us, the mayo one was on the blander side and the ponzu one was pretty salty, but combined it was good! Trofie: dank. Great homemade pasta, and the lobster sausage was super good. Pork chop: my partner enjoyed it, but I personally thought it was on the fatty side. I debated posting this but after some back and forth it seemed necessary to share since this could've been really bad for the wrong person... I attended for a multi day event and our table was served about 20-30 mins after everyone else's table for reasons unclear. They were so behind, now mind you, there was only three basic courses and this is how they went. Course 1: Salad... this salad had a FULLY INTACT BEE tossed into the salad. This could've literally killed someone had they eaten it, this is also strange because there weren't bees flying around so no one would've known what was going on.... I almost ate it if I hadn't stirred it up, I wouldn't have seen it buried in my salad which was terrifying and traumatizing at the same time. I couldn't get the servers attention so I went inside to let them know and their solution? To bring me a new salad. lol talk about a ruined appetite. Course 2: Fish.... Couldn't hardly eat any of it because of the salad and the little I did have was pretty mushy. Course 3: Dessert.... Served in a to go container because they were running behind. Basically, if you're planning an event or nice dinner I would recommend considering other options. I let management know again after the event and they "apologized" and offered a small token of apology in the form of a future credit, but not even enough to reorder my original meal... We ordered three dishes: classic pizza (yummy, unique twist on the thin crust - very much like a cracker crust)... handmade ravioli (good pasta but the sauce and toppings were not good - extremely oily, lacking in flavor and dynamism)... and the thinned lamb (meat was cooked well but lacked flavor and toppings were average)... Fantastic! On an early Friday evening my wife and i escaped to Scampo - a quaint restaurant featuring amazing Italian food. The weather was superb on a September day we sat outside as we enjoyed our cocktails and wine. For starters, the "elephant ear walking" was something we've never seen before. Think of a large naan bread, shaped like an elephant ear but with pesto, sauce and cheese. Perfect starter! Main courses featured the Duck - so much flavor the tenderness literally melted in your mouth. Also, the pink swordfish - meaty and savory accompanied with crunchies and i have no idea what pasta but wow was it good! The service was absolutely excellent. I took my wife there for our anniversary dinner and her favorite, Brandi Carlisle concert after. Had an exquisite bottle of Chianti with a thumbs up from our sommelier. Execution is getting very sloppy. They said they could do the pork chop medium rare, but it came well done. On their second try it was raw. The lamb shoulder chop came in two pieces. One was raw and the other was all sinew and fat. Cod had nice crispy skin one time, and soft skin the next. They forgot to put the mozzarella on the "mozzarella and prosciutto" plate. We had a very upsetting experience at your restaurant in Boston. When our toddler spilled a small amount of pasta on the tablecloth -- which is a completely normal thing for a child -- one of the waitresses made a disgusted face while clearing the table. It was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. Another waiter witnessed this and simply said, "I know," instead of stepping in or apologizing. No one took responsibility or even tried to be kind. As parents, we felt humiliated and judged for something so minor. What's worse -- despite how uncomfortable we felt -- we still left more than a $50 tip out of principle. We always treat staff with respect, but this behavior was unacceptable. No family should be made to feel unwelcome because they have a child. Friday dinner for four Tbh surprised we were able to book the night before. It's located in the lobby of a hotel so we had high hopes it would be good. The tables were a bit too close together. I didn't like the darkness and loudness either but it was tolerable. Maybe the other thing that bothered me was how our table was right in front of the hallway in front of the kitchen. We ordered a fried calmari to share as an appetizer. I don't like how the batter was not airy enough. Also it got soggy quickly. It was too thick too, or I should say the calamari meat inside was too thin. It didn't make sense why the legs part was one big piece that wasn't cut smaller. Also they have a paper bowl in the middle of the plate probably to give the impression it's a lot - not impressed. The cream sauce that came with it only helped with softening the tough batter but it didn't make the calamari more attractive. I ordered lobster ravioli I was intrigued by chestnut flour and I think it made the dish earthier, perfect for fall. The lobster filling and topping were high quality lobsters. The best part of the dish was the sauce/toppings. The infused butter was so fragrant. It was a whole slab of butter and can feel the heaviness but it was nice. The candied walnuts were a fun addition from its sweetness and crunchiness. I like how they added some carrot bits for color. Although there were only three pieces of ravioli, they were huge. Alongside the other parts of the dish, I was satisfied but definitely barely. My friends ordered: seabass with purple yam, grilled salmon, duck with pomegranate and pear. The seabass had clams too so it seemed like a bustling dish. The best part imo was the purple yam. It was super smooth in texture and the contrasting color is striking. I also like how sweet it is. The salmon was normal too but I liked how they added beets. The duck was surprising! The portions were big and the meat was so tender. Pear and pomegranate added slight sweetness that made the whole dish more fall ready. Wild rice made this dish even more filling, but I wish it was a bit softer. Perhaps a bit more greens would be nice to balance out the heaviness. For dessert we shared a tiramisu because we were too full to get more. It wasn't my type. The cream was too sweet and coffee wasn't strong enough. The candied nuts and raisins didn't make the situation better. Another thing I must point out was the service. Our server Kurt was very polite and organized, a bit too much to the point it seemed robotic. I appreciated the elegant movements when arranging and collecting items on the table. Whenever he asked if we needed anything or took our orders, it seemed like he would give the same response regardless of what we said. Overall the food quality and combinations are worth coming back. We booked a group dinner at Scampo as it was highly recommended and well located (we were staying in the Liberty Hotel). The event planner made things very easy for us, and they were prepared for us when we arrived. We started with passed appetizers in the Courtyard; the food was well prepared, the wine service was handled nicely, and the cocktail hour passed fast. We then adjourned to the dining room; we were given a semi-private space in a quiet corner of the restaurant. Assorted "Scampo breads" were set out; I was particularly fond of the prosciutto and fig pizza on a thin naan-like cruse. Although this is an Italian resto, they have a tandoor oven in the central kitchen, and the smoky taste of tandoor fired bread was apparent. I chose the shrimp Zuppa as my starter; it was a creamy red curry broth with minced shrimp dumplings. It was so good I could have bathed in it! My main was the fried soft shell crab over saffron/tomato risotto. The crab was properly crisp and expertly fried. The risotto had a great texture and fabulous in-season tomato flavor. For dessert, the fresh berry galette with a scoop of vanilla ice cream was perfect. The cost ran about $150/person with wine; a decent value for the quality of the food and service, and the fabulous flavors. First time trying this place with a friend. We had made reservations on a Friday afternoon and showed up five minutes late due to traffic. Fortunately there were plenty of seats available so running late was not an issue. For appetizers, we shared the shrimp meatball soup, and the burrata salad. We were confused because we had only seen the soup and barely noticed a meatball on the side of the dish. Our waiter also pointed out that there was a meatball inside of the soup. We used bread to dip into the flavorful broth since the consistency was very watery. The burrata salad was with plain arugula and a mini flakey tart. I believe it would have benefitted from some sort of glaze as it lacked anything prominent. For entrées, my friend had the salmon while I had the Bolognese small portion. They offered the salmon as medium rare in which my friend requested medium instead. It was already tender and moist so I'm not sure how it would have been otherwise. The sautéed vegetables were well seasoned with a beet purée. I was happy I ordered the small portion as it was not what I was expecting. Like the burrata, the pasta was disappointing in how little flavor there really was. Service was exceptional but quality of food was lacking especially given the associated price tag. I have visited Scampo on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed. I sat at the bar both times, so can't quite comment on service at a table, but the bar service was good, no complaints. The drinks are fantastic, and I love their wine selection. The menu is interesting, but anything I have had here has been immaculate. The pasta servings are perfect for one person! Patrick's naan with prosciutto is phenomenal, so light and airy yet filling! I have been to Scampo twice, once for Thanksgiving in 2024 and then this month. The room is beautiful without being stuffy. Lovely warm yellows reminding me a bit of the southwest. The bar areas are really nice and very comfortable (there are two one overlooking the cooking area). Both times the service was friendly but very slow; at Thanksgiving it almost ruined our time. The meal at T-day was very good. Instead of turkey I had the pork chop. Amazing. Well marbled, crispy on the outside and flavorful, not the dry pork you usually find these days. The salad was simple but perfectly dressed. The cocktails were beautiful, tasty and ample. At our more recent time the service again was very slow. We sat a couple of times for 10-15 minutes, plates cleared waiting for our next course or for our server to notice that we were just sitting there. - The naan with Lydia's anchovy umami butter was only so-so, not what I'd expect from a dish described as having a lot of umami. - Caesar salad was delicious, crispy romaine and very tasty parmesan. - We got the carbonara and spaghetti with pork cracklings and red pepper. The pasta itself was excellent, fresh and cooked perfectly al dente. Both dishes needed to be better seasoned. Even a little salt and pepper would improve it. The cracklings were so so good - crispy but with melty pork belly once you bit into them; however, no hint of the red pepper used to describe the dish, which was really needed to cut the fat. The carbonara was good, not great - again needed seasoning. Note that the smaller portion sizes are quite ample. We did not get the pizza but the ones coming out of the open fire pizza oven looked great (although the lobster pizza must be on the menu for tourists - what a waste of lobster IMO). Next time we may sit at the bar area (I'd chose the one on the right as you walk in, rather than the one overlooking the cooking area) and have pizza and a glass of wine. read more
