We had a very early Sunday supper at this authentic charmer on Charles Street. I would encourage any one shopping on Newbury or Comm Avenue to forget the uber to the North End and walk over here. It's dark and cozy and all the service staff is far friendlier and accommodating than the overwhelmed and overrated Hanover Street spots. The wine list here has an impressive array of Italian reds, well beyond the Chianti Classicos. Very generous pours by the glass as well. We tried the lightest tastiest gnocchi I can ever remember; the grilled octopus salad with a simple vinaigrette, a hearty bean and pork sausage stew and the rustic mushroom based based soup with a poached egg and bread crumbs that I will soon be trying to duplicate at home. All tasted like they came from your nonna's cucina. The grilled meats and chicken parmigiana enjoyed by the tables next to us drew high praise too. I was debating been 2 sauce for me pasta, and was pleased to discover that you can do "half bolognese, half veal- tomato - both very good. Upon walking to our table, they have a nice (but smaller) bar area with additional dining seating. Our reservation was at 5:45 and that area had plenty of people. We were seated in the dining room which was a nice space. We started off with the four cheese tasting, but in our opinions it could have been better. The truffle honey was slightly overpowering and we wish we could have drizzled/spread the honey ourselves as well as wishing some crostini or crackers included with the tasting. For our entrees I had the Ortolano Risotto which was rich in flavor and very delicious. My boyfriend had the Bistecca Di Filetto with a black truffle sauce that he very much enjoyed and said melts in your mouth. I also had a spritz with dinner that was refreshing and light. Our server was right on top of things getting drinks sorted, helping us select a bottle of wine, and taking our order. It's a very cozy place and the staff really cares about the restaurant and their guests. My partners steak with the cream sauce was very good. I ordered the Rigatoni Norcina. I was a little confused the menu didn't say it was patte of sausage and I didn't see it in the dish. I think depending on the quality of the sausage it could be great on a given day, but what I tasted could use more umami so it wasn't as knock out as of a dish as the steak, but I don't doubt I would have loved anything else. They cooked their noodles al dente with good quality pasta. The tiramisu had less of a forward marscapone flavor in it, but did have interesting chocolate flavor and texture similar to chocolate mousse. Drinks were solidly good. I had a bees knees and espresso martini they were happy to add baileys to. Good dinner. Spent ~$220 for two...will come back for sure. read more

We've been here twice. Both times we went early before it got busy. Sat at the bar the first time and had an amazing woman as our server. Wish I could remember her name. Had pizza and a Caesar salad. Both were terrific! And that brought us back again last night for a totally different menu. We had the swordfish piccata special. It was SPECIAL! We showed up to the restaurant without having a reservation but were greeted by the host kindly. We stood outside for about 15 minutes before they were open but they let us in early. Most of us got the restaurant week menu and it's a very good deal. The bread was good and idk what that balsamic vinegar and olive oil was but it's soooo good. I got the smoked salmon: it was good and the olive was interesting but quite salty as the olives are. Rigatoni truffle was pretty good , not too heavy. You get a good whiff of the truffle. Our party of 5 came on a Thursday evening with NO reservations around 7pm and were pleasantly surprised to get a seat on the high top tables adjacent to the bar area and open kitchen. I am not exaggerating when I say that the gnocchi was one of my favorite Italian dishes I have ever had, including those I had in Italy. The folks at Harvard recommended this place for a dinner and while it was good, I'm not sure it was as mind-blowingly good as the receptionist said it was so we left a little disappointed. I had the tagliatelle gambari with shrimp which was just OK (I liked that there was an option for a petite portion since I wasn't super hungry). Also tried the grilled calamari which was a bit too chewy for me and I'd probably pass on that next time. I was very disappointed with this place. The place is beautiful however the food was tasteless. It was recommended by a great friend and we were really excited to try it out, but nothing that I ordered was really great. Everything lacked taste even though it was nicely presented. The bruschetta had no flavor at all. It was chopped tomatoes on a toast. Zero seasoning. The caprese was sliced tomatoes and a small burrata, but again, no flavor or seasoning. Not even balsamic vinegar. That was the first caprese I ever had with burrata cheese and without balsamic vinegar. Absolutely loved our visit to Toscano's. We just happened to be walking down the street and a couple who lived nearby was coming out and was like "YOU HAVE TO EAT HERE! We are locals and we gotta tell you it's the best food around. All the locals eat here. You won't regret it!" So we thought "Hey, why not!" We were not disappointed. He gave us great recommendations to the places we were visiting and was so helpful with whatever we needed! *Allergies info: They have gluten free pasta!! We started off with the Gamberoni alla brace (grilled shrimp) which came with 3 huge juicy pieces of delicious shrimp. For our entrees, I had the bistecca di filetto (filet with mashed potatoes) and my husband had the orecchiette vitello (pasta with veil sauce). Also wonderful. We ordered the duck pasta sauce on the side to try and it was 10/10 delicious!! For dessert we had the Torta di Mirtilli (blueberry white chocolate tart) and the Frutti di Bosco (berries covered in red wine custard) which were AMAZING! We Torta di Martilli was to die for. We ate it within 3 minutes flat. The crust is delish and so buttery. The Frutti di Bosco was a nice fresh dessert with a gentle sweetly bitter finish. This place is so so good! We are from Chicago where we have high standards for authentic Italian food as there are a ton of options and we are spoiled. I did so much research for a good restaurant in the Northend, settled in on one to take our parents who live in Westminster and it was just Awful last night so tonight we came back to our tried and true Toscano in Beacon Hill. We have eaten here at least 8 times but finally I feel we need to leave a review and tell you not to waste your time in the cheesy Northend come here instead. Peter is our server - old school professionalism top notch service - food is excellent we had the meatballs, eggplant as appetizer, Caesar salad, Salmon and filet of Cod as the mains. Toscano never misses! I've been here three times - on a date night, with girlfriends, and with a group of 4. Each time, the food was absolutely delicious and the service was wonderful. I highly recommend bringing guests here - you can explore the cute shops on Charles street (don't skip Beacon Hill books & cafe!) and eat some really delicious Italian food. The ambiance is really cozy and comfortable, and the space is bigger than it appears from the outside! When I visited recently with friends, my friend was interested in finding a bottle of red for us that wasn't too expensive and had the juicy/fruit-forward flavors she was looking for. Our waitress brought over their sommelier, who was really patient and helpful and found us the perfect red. For starters, I highly recommend their caprese with burrata and heirloom tomatoes. Their balsamic is also a perfect pairing for this dish! I tried the sopressata pizza, which came out super hot and fresh and melty with a crisp thin crust - perfect! Every pasta I've tried here is incredible. The linguine vongole is a classic, super fresh option, and any of their pastas with their signature sausage is a perfect heartier balance. I like to order one pasta dish each, and the waitress always offers to split our plates with half the pasta each, which makes sharing so easy! I especially love their tagliatelli with sausage and cream sauce. All of their noodles taste homemade as they have a wonderful chew to them and are always cooked to the perfect texture.
