We had a very early Sunday supper at this authentic charmer on Charles Street. I would encourage any one shopping on Newbury or Comm Avenue to forget the uber to the North End and walk over here. It's dark and cozy and all the service staff is far friendlier and accommodating than the overwhelmed and overrated Hanover Street spots. The wine list here has an impressive array of Italian reds, well beyond the Chianti Classicos. Very generous pours by the glass as well. We tried the lightest tastiest gnocchi I can ever remember; the grilled octopus salad with a simple vinaigrette, a hearty bean and pork sausage stew and the rustic mushroom based based soup with a poached egg and bread crumbs that I will soon be trying to duplicate at home. All tasted like they came from your nonna's cucina. The grilled meats and chicken parmigiana enjoyed by the tables next to us drew high praise too. My wife loved this place. She really enjoyed her Chicken Parmesan and she loved the ambience. My son really enjoyed his pizza as well. While I think the ambience is excellent, too, I thought the pizza was just fine. It was large for a personal pizza. The dough of the pizza tasted a little different though not bad. The middle of the pizza was kind of soupy. I started off by eating with a knife and fork. The toppings were good and plentiful. After lots of walking around the area, I was really looking forward to a Diet Coke. What I got was this tiny little glass Diet Coke bottle (8 oz). I knew right away, there was no such thing as a refill for that and he confirmed later. I just drank water for the rest of the meal which again was unfortunate because I like to have a soda before dinner and during dinner at least. Upon walking to our table, they have a nice (but smaller) bar area with additional dining seating. Our reservation was at 5:45 and that area had plenty of people. We were seated in the dining room which was a nice space. We started off with the four cheese tasting, but in our opinions it could have been better. The truffle honey was slightly overpowering and we wish we could have drizzled/spread the honey ourselves as well as wishing some crostini or crackers included with the tasting. For our entrees I had the Ortolano Risotto which was rich in flavor and very delicious. My boyfriend had the Bistecca Di Filetto with a black truffle sauce that he very much enjoyed and said melts in your mouth. I also had a spritz with dinner that was refreshing and light. It's a very cozy place and the staff really cares about the restaurant and their guests. My partners steak with the cream sauce was very good. I ordered the Rigatoni Norcina. I was a little confused the menu didn't say it was patte of sausage and I didn't see it in the dish. I think depending on the quality of the sausage it could be great on a given day, but what I tasted could use more umami so it wasn't as knock out as of a dish as the steak, but I don't doubt I would have loved anything else. They cooked their noodles al dente with good quality pasta. The tiramisu had less of a forward marscapone flavor in it, but did have interesting chocolate flavor and texture similar to chocolate mousse. Drinks were solidly good. We've been here twice. Both times we went early before it got busy. Sat at the bar the first time and had an amazing woman as our server. Wish I could remember her name. Had pizza and a Caesar salad. Most of us got the restaurant week menu and it's a very good deal. The bread was good and idk what that balsamic vinegar and olive oil was but it's soooo good. I got the smoked salmon: it was good and the olive was interesting but quite salty as the olives are. Rigatoni truffle was pretty good , not too heavy. You get a good whiff of the truffle. Our party of 5 came on a Thursday evening with NO reservations around 7pm and were pleasantly surprised to get a seat on the high top tables adjacent to the bar area and open kitchen. We started off with the Gamberoni alla brace (grilled shrimp) which came with 3 huge juicy pieces of delicious shrimp. For our entrees, I had the bistecca di filetto (filet with mashed potatoes) and my husband had the orecchiette vitello (pasta with veil sauce). Also wonderful. We ordered the duck pasta sauce on the side to try and it was 10/10 delicious!! For dessert we had the Torta di Mirtilli (blueberry white chocolate tart) and the Frutti di Bosco (berries covered in red wine custard) which were AMAZING! We Torta di Martilli was to die for. We ate it within 3 minutes flat. The crust is delish and so buttery. The Frutti di Bosco was a nice fresh dessert with a gentle sweetly bitter finish. This place is so so good! We are from Chicago where we have high standards for authentic Italian food as there are a ton of options and we are spoiled. I did so much research for a good restaurant in the Northend, settled in on one to take our parents who live in Westminster and it was just Awful last night so tonight we came back to our tried and true Toscano in Beacon Hill. We have eaten here at least 8 times but finally I feel we need to leave a review and tell you not to waste your time in the cheesy Northend come here instead. Peter is our server - old school professionalism top notch service - food is excellent we had the meatballs, eggplant as appetizer, Caesar salad, Salmon and filet of Cod as the mains.
