I saw a bunch of these chains down in Austin and decided to try them when I went to Costco. I wanted something light to eat because I had Mexican food that day. Inside you have a choice of healthy or really bad, but mouth watering subs. I saw the calories on the bad mouth water subs and decided to go with the 500 calorie choice. I probably would rate this a 5 stars if I got the bad for you subs like the beef brisket one. I got the chicken apple sandwich which was around 600 calories. After my boyfriend hounding me to try Firehouse Subs, sadly I don't see the big deal. I had the Italian combo. They put lots of meat on the sandwhich, along with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and some sort of sweet sauce that adds a great kick to the flavor. I asked for wheat bread, and it had a good taste and came in a nice hearty loaf. Despite all this, there was something missing from the sandwich. It could very well have been the fact that they couldn't toast the bread. They posted signs on their doors saying that their toaster was broken. Of course, these things happen, but it's still a big disappointment to have all of the hot items crossed off the menu. No toasted buns and no melted cheese is a recipe for sandwich sadness. The people behind the counter were (probably bored and therefore) timing themselves on how fast they made their sandwich. They made one sandwich in 3 minutes before mine, which took about the same time. So not a long wait at all, but when you're competing against Jimmy John's where they make sandwiches in 30 seconds and they taste better, you have to step up your game. The staff was very nice and friendly, and the inside was decorated in a fun and creative way (although it has the potential for some people to think it's tacky.) I would consider it a fun atmosphere for a lunch. They have red tables with dalmation-spot tabletops, and some firemen equipment hanging on the walls for fun. One thing that a lot of people don't seem to mention is that the Firehouse Subs company raises money for local firefighters through their franchises. All I ever order from here is their meatball sub and yes it is pretty delicious. Well seasoned meatballs, stringy cheese and savory sauce sprinkled with Italian herbs. It comes out piping hot and it's pretty huge, enough to make 2 meals out of it. The people working here are always friendly and the food comes out fast. I only wish this place could be a little cleaner. There's quite a bit of food scraps all over the floor in the dining area. I don't know if it was a cockroach or just a bug but we saw something black scurry across the floor one time while eating. Also the drink station could look a little less abused. They have that soda machine with the touch screen to customize your soda and the screen is pretty disgusting with grubby fingerprints and greasy smudge marks. Stopped in here for the first time today to see what it was all about and maybe add some variety to my lunch breaks. Don't think I'll be coming back, it just took way too long to get a sandwich that was only ok. For the amount of time I waited, I could have driven farther to the nearest Jimmy John's, gotten a much better sandwich, and still made it back to work sooner. And no excuses for it being lunch rush--I've seen much bigger crowds in other places where they still got the food out faster (heck, I've worked much bigger lunch rushes myself back when I worked food-service and never seen service this slow). Plus, they had five people behind the counter. On the upside, the place seemed fairly clean and the staff were friendly, although the friendliness seemed a little bit forced or a little too coached, and the shouted greeting everytime someone walked in the door (evidently they are required to do this?) got very annoying very soon into my very long wait for my sub. When I finally got my veggie sub, it was decent but nothing to shout about, a little bland, a little soggy, and I'm pretty sure the mushrooms they put on it came out of a can. read more

I take my subs very seriously, and Firehouse is hands down my favorite place to go for a great sandwich. Their menu isn't large, but does not lack in quality. The interior of the shop is very nice and clean, and the staff is always friendly and good at what they do. Like Torchy's, this place is great for eating out with a group of friends. It was my first time visiting fire house. I figured I'd try a new sandwich shop. I came around noon, but it definitely wasn't as busy as expected. One of the first things I notice is the cashiers interactions with customers ahead of me. A lot of passive eye rolling, and a general look of distaste, not a single smile in the 4 customers ahead of me(not even half an effort to make one) So I figured maybe she's just having a bad day, it was my turn I smiled and asked how her day was going politely. I was returned shortly and rudely with "Fine. What's your order?" Alrighty then. Proceeded with my order, to which I opted for 2 add on's- each costing .75¢ a piece. 15 minutes later my sandwich was ready. Upon arriving home and opening my sandwich, they messed up 3 different times. Including products I asked not to be on the sandwich, and completely neglecting to add on the sides I asked for, yet still got charged the $1.50 for 2 simple add ons.. other than that the food was alright. Firehouse Subs has got it Right! I had no idea this place even existed a week ago. My co-workers couldn't stop talking about their lunch and when I got home, it was my wife that said "I had to go". So the next day, I have to say, I had my first Firehouse experience and was not disappointed. Wow! I spent some time talking to the owner, Jason, who couln't have been more helpful. Customer service was definitely a focus. Firehouse steams their meats and cheeses which is unique. I had the Italian and it was Awesome. The bread was toasted but still soft, the produce fresh, and the steamed meat and cheese....well perfect. Went back for the New York Steamer. Not sure which one I like better. Jason remembered me and greeted me with a smile. This place has awesome customer service. Bill (from his review) must have caught him at a bad moment. Wow... what a huge disappointment.. thought I was getting a high quality sub. Ordered a chicken breast ( don't believe the breast description), medium, take out. Got it home and the little vinegar and oil I ordered had soaked through the opening in the container (wrap take outs please) it was in and the bag. Opened the container, the chicken was chopped as in salad toppings, very small along with the chopped green peppers. I have never seen so much shredded iceberg lettuce in a sub (cheap out) ever. I couldn't pick it up because the chicken and peppers wouldn't stay in the roll. Dry and tasteless. Don't waste your money or calories on something so inferior. Never again.. read more

Someone just said, Zoe, that the Italian sub was excellent, and that the bread was soft and fresh. Ok, rule number one about an Italian Sub, at least an ingestible one, the bread would never be soft on the outside. Good Italian bread always has an initial "bite" to it. Secondarily, the quality of the meats that Firehouse uses is one step above Alpo Dog Food, (sorry Alpo) your low quality has at last been revealed. Wrong Dressings for an Italian. No Pepperoncini's, No Sweet Peppers, not the right Ham Cappy, no Proscuitto, wrong lettuce. Other than that it's a great Italian. Kinda like Tony's is a great Frozen Pizza. Um Hum. read more

I love this place! I eat there on average 2 times a week. I have been looking for a good sub place in Austin for a while now. I'm originally from Florida where I enjoyed Larry's Giant Subs in Ganesville and Oldsmar. I would eat at the one in Gainesville almost every day in college. Sandwiches just seem like a normal lunch to me... A perfect sub must have white, soft toasted bread, lunchmeats that don't taste like store-bought, and be eaten as soon as it is made before things get soggy or cold. Firehouse subs starts with a very light, perfect-every-time roll that is toasted. Then they put on meat that has been through the steamer, which is an unusual contraption that they pump continuously while you are standing at the counter. On top of that, they will add cheese, either mustard/mayo or both (and just the right amount of both..medium mayo and light mustard..perfect!) lettuce, tomato and these huge rings of onion. I really like the onion sometimes and sometimes I have to take it off...depends on the mood. It all comes together wonderfully to make this place the best sub place in Austin. I have tried Potbelly, Thundercloud, Texadelphia, Jersey Mike's, Subway, Quiznos, Charlie's in the mall, Which Wich and I walked out of a sub place up on Anderson because they didn't have any warm sandwiches. Just to give you an idea of the competition. I like Potbelly the most out of that list. I usually get the medium Engine Company, which has turkey and roast beef. I have tried the Hook and Ladder, which is turkey and ham and thought that the ham was way over sweet for me, and I usually like sweet. I have also tried the pastrami (or corned beef?) sandwich with mustard, which was fabulous. One note for take-out...don't do it unless you plan to eat in the car. The steamed meat is so moist that it will overwhelm your sandwich and make it soggy by the time you get home. I have asked them to wrap the sub in a napkin before they wrap it and it helped it from getting soggy. You won't have this problem with most other sub places. A year ago, this place was packed all the time and they must have had 20 people behind the counter. Now, it is usually about half full with 6 to 10 people working there, and they are friendly. Get the stamp card and you'll get a free sub on them every now and then. A medium combo with chips and a drink is usually around $7. read more

This would be a 5 star rating if it weren't for overhearing whom I assume is the owner scream and drop f bombs at an employee for an issue with the woman's bathroom. After the "greeting" which was a very uncomfortable yell across the room , I wanted to run. Then I noticed the untidy dining room with more dirty tables than clean ones. And am I the only person who hates serve yourself drink bars where every dirty hand in town has touched everything? The take on the cheese steak was a disgrace to Philly - raw bell peppers and onions, and a soft roll? BUT WAIT - the very best! Before popping into Costco last Saturday, my wife and I decided to try out this cool looking place that is conveniently located in the same corner of the world. The inside is extremely clean with an interesting theme. Naturally, the sandwiches have themed names like Hook & Ladder and such. My wife got one of those and I grabbed a Club on a Sub. The sandwiches were delivered to our table reasonably quickly even though the place was packed. In fact, the only real complaint we had is that the honeyed ham was w-a-ay too honeyed. You really couldn't even taste the ham. It was more like candied ham. I thought my sub had a bit too much mayo, but that can be corrected easily enough. Went to Firehouse Subs tonight and both sweet and unsweetened tea containers were empty, the lemon tray had 2 small wedges and they were brown, the limes were also brown as if they had been there all day. Firehouse certainly serves up a 'better than average' sub. I had the NY Steamer on my last visit here and it was decent although it did slightly remind me of something from Arby's. I'll take some of the blame here by admitting that I made the mistake of putting a hot sauce that rated at 357,000 Scoville on my sub...YIKES. However, this particular location continually disappoints me for a couple of reasons: The service is awful. Several times I have stood at the counter, money in hand, waiting for someone to take my order. One time I waited 30 minutes at the counter, when the store was near empty, to watch as employees would walk by me, like i was invisible or something. Then, if you are lucky enough to get your order taken, the sandwich makers hide behind a wall of hot sauce, so you can't see what they are doing. My husband and I came here for the first time today. We'd never been to a firehouse subs, but we always see the people along William Cannon dancing with the sign. We went in and didn't really know what to order, but Andrew & Jackie had us covered! They told us all about the employee's favorites. In the end, We ordered the Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar Brisket Sub and the Firehouse Meatball Sub. My husband and I traded half our subs so we could try them both!! They were both soo great!! Not really impressed with Firehouse. Above average prices for ok-sub sandwiches and a sort of neo-fascist restaurant decor slant makes this place worth avoiding anytime. Awkward greetings as you enter and exit from the employees. Menu was a bit like labyrinth to navigate. read more

I took a break from this Firehouse location after getting the wrong order the past couple of times that i visited (to-go orders). Today's visit did not include a greeting (that used to be nice). I was in a bit of a rush and asked about what sandwich could be prepped the fastest. I was advised to order anything as default. I did so, and found out that there was a large order ahead of me. 30 minutes later, i got my sandwich. It would have been nice to know that there was a mega order ahead of me. The cashier could have informed me of this since i asked about speed. Also, my sandwich seemed different. My guess is that there was some cross contamination from the previous large order. (most likely a sauce). Unfortunate. It will be a while before i return. read more

Firehouse Subs = going downhill This used to be a clean and nice place to get a great sub. One of the best features was the soft ice. They have since replaced the ice machine with a huge flavored coke machine that has become a smelly ( like an old dirty sink ) and dirty/sticky mess. This coke machine requires you to press a touch screen (which is also always sticky & dirty) with your hands to use. I haven't seen the owners behind the counter in months and the employees really don't seem to care anymore. What once used to be always packed with customers now rarely has more than a couple tables full at a time. read more

Sadly, this location is terrible. I normally love a good Firehouse sub, but everyone at this location is incredibly rude and they almost always mess up my fiancé's sub. Today they put gobs and gobs of mayo on my Italian, rendering it almost completely inedible. It's also strange to me that no one EVER greets customers. I've been to this location many times over the past few years and have unfortunately watched it go downhill. Not sure what changed, but the service has become ridiculously slow. Consistently. Waiting 25 minutes for a sandwich??? Frustrating. I've also experienced what others have in regards to the order takers. Maybe it's an attempt to be upbeat or convey speediness (which is ironic!), but you can hardly say two words before they start talking right over you. You don't even have a chance to say your size or bread selection- they will just start babbling away. Which would be forgivable if they actually paused to listen to your reply. But they often don't, which is just weird and darned annoying. There are lots of lunch options in this strip center. Save yourself time and aggravation and go somewhere else. read more

I don't really remember being offered that stanza. Wow. 1st , would like to complain at how non-friendly the manager was and how his staff actually were like the 7 dwarfs. There was Bashful , Dopey , Sleepy , Grumpy , and so on and so forth. I overhead one of the first customers complaining at how expensive they can be , it's close to $11 for a MED sandwich & Med Drink , WITHOUT chips !!! I don't mind spending that much , maybe once a week , after i get paid ---but most people will not spend that much on a great made-but fairly portioned meal. It's like telling all the Fat Kids at Camp that there is only Candy that's prune flavored ; they're not going to eat it.... The kid behind the counter taking my order , was a joke. His hat couldn't fit on hit head , because his mop-top hair doo. Then i guess he was trying to be tough , because I had to say my name almost 4 times , from 3 feet away....i've got stubb 2 hours after i shave thicker than his 2 week effort and he wanted to be tough towards me.....Madonna had ''Like a Virgin'' , but Austin has ''Like a Stoner'' Hey....working for the very 1st time ,.........uh - nevermind hehehe Store was in clean condtion , can't lie about that , but it was nearly 65 degrees in there , it's barely 10 A.M. and it's too cold for morning snackers. Was a favorite at one point but this place needs new management or new staff. Came in one day and there was two guys working and somebody in the back. We waited about 25 mins and about that time I guess the prep guy had gotten behind. So the cashier goes and helps him. That was absolutely disgusting. He handles money but then went to make the food without washing his hands. There was no more than five people in there and these had to be the slowest duo I've ever seen. i used to love this place, but then they cut back on things, and started caring more about the business than the customer. - regularly short on hot sauces (especially the peach n pepper). if you are *always* out of a certain product, order a larger quantity the next time! - they used to have punchcards (buy 10 subs, get one free). they took that program away, and said they were coming out with something else... but hadn't after 6 months or so. i dont know if they do now. read more
