I have a strange fear of secret fish sauce being in new foods I try. I know it's not normal but I hate fish to a sickening degree and always fear it's lurking in random foods. Today we tried Firehouse Subs for the first time and my fear became reality. I ordered the Engineer, which is a mushroom Swiss sub. I asked for no lettuce, no onion. The cashier mumbled something about the mushrooms being "in sauce that contains [unintelligible]." I assumed she said "veg" or something because often when I ask for no onions people are kind enough to warn me if the sauce has onions. I asked her to repeat it and she said the sauce contains FISH. The sauce for the mushrooms CONTAINS FISH. My stomach turned, even as she insisted it doesn't taste fishy. IT CONTAINS FISH. Why? Why would the marvelous mushroom Swiss combination be tainted with fish? I cannot begin to fathom it. There was no way I was going to eat that, so I fumbled for another option, settling on the Club. Still reeling from the revelation that the mushrooms contain fish, I forgot to ask for no mayo, so that was my fault, but they sure put on a lot. My appetite was pretty much gone and all I could think about was this weird mushroom fish sauce, so I didn't enjoy the sandwich at all. The ham was overly sweet and paired with the generous helping of mayo it was slightly nauseating. My husband tried the meatball sub because he saw a sign that said, "best meatballs guaranteed." He was tempted to ask for his money back. The meatballs were mediocre at best, and the sub was drowning in sauce. Although the cheese looked like it would be crispy, it was just mush. I tried one bite and the oily sauce/cheese goo started pouring down. Although I am a sandwich fanatic and would normally give a place like this a second chance, we won't be returning. I have to say, the first time my wife and I decided to take a chance and eat Firehouse it was okay, a bit expensive but ok, the chopped salad was good. Last night we got a carry out, we had a Chicken Salad Sandwich and I ordered the Pastrami. The Pastrami was as disappointing as could be. It had a small amount of meat, and it had MAYONAISE, LETTUCE AND TOMATOES on it!!! You would think that they would know what goes on a Pastrami sandwich. The best Pastrami in Orange is at the the new Pauls Place, it is massive, tender and well made. We wont be eating at Firehouse again, the only reason we did in the first place was Bobbi D's was closed. Its overpriced and obviously the kids who make the sandwiches have not be well trained. I've been to this particular Firehouse Subs a number of times. I keep wanting it to be better than it is. The sandwiches are ALL spectacular. The bread is excellent (more a fan of the white rather than the honey wheat). The staff is friendly and inviting. Really: there isn't anything at all wrong with the food. So why the two stars? Frankly, the only reason the restaurant scored two stars is because the food is so damned good. Let me walk you through my experience this last time - which is, more or less, typical of every visit: I walked in at 6:30pm. There were two couples eating there, and one guy ordering take-out. The wait isn't excessive, and none of the employees seem in any way harried. I order my food - a regular Hook & Ladder on white with all the regular condiments- and a drink. I complete the transaction, get my drink, and wander away from the counter. I opt for the sweet tea as a drink. It's empty. I tell the girl about it, and she tells me it'll take five minutes for a fresh brew. She's very polite about it. I have to get a drink from my nemesis: The POS Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. This is a machine that started appearing in restaurants and theater venues a few years ago. It's crap. It's terrible. It's miserable. You get sticky goo dripping on your hands when you have to push into the machine for ice, and then you have to deal with a touch screen that tries very hard to be intuitive about telling you what's out and what you can't order, but which fails on quite a few levels. Not the least of which is the 'guess' at where to put down a soda cup to fill it; too far back and you're rewarded with more ice that seems to dump a random amount no matter whether you 'tap' the lever or hold it, too far forward and the drink will teeter off the front when it gets filled enough to topple over. The selling point of the machine seems to be that it was designed by Pininfarina - the same automotive design firm responsible for some of the most amazing Ferraris ever made. Note, however, that Ferraris - like the Freestyle machine - are temperamental beasts that never quite work right. Rather than using traditional syrup, the Freestyle machines use cartridges - not unlike the things you put in your inkjet printer. I've never had a simple Coke out of any of these Freestyle machines that tastes right; they're always a little off. This machine is no exception. So my Sweet Tea is now inkjet Coca Cola. I survey the room for a place to sit. As I said, there are two couples eating. They're occupying two of the tables, and there are plenty of other tables. And the three desirable ones (ones not right next to the other diners) are dirty. They haven't been wiped down, and there's trash on them. I paid a premium price at a sandwich shop ... and now I get to clean a table so I can eat there. I get to play employee, and clean the table I want to eat at. There is, of course, only one problem with that. The napkin dispense on the table is empty. Completely. Both sides. The table right next to it? Ditto: no napkins. I do find a full napkin dispenser, so I grab it. I switch it out with the one on the table I want to eat at, and proceed to clean the table. Being the conscientious (if temporary and unpaid) employee that I am, I don't want to just brush trash and food bits off onto the floor. It's none too clean already, and I don't want to contribute to the clutter. So I go to the trash bin, and grab one of the un-bussed dirty food trays and - using a napkin - I wipe down the table onto the tray, and deposit it into the trash can. I do want to thank the employees for being lackluster in their cleaning routine; if you guys had bussed the trays I would have had to wipe other people's food into my hand. That would have been nasty. The sandwich came. It was - as usual - terrific. The problem - and low score - aren't a result of the food, it's the dining experience; dirty tables, unbussed trays, unavailable drink service, and the Godawful Coca-Cola Freestyle machine get you a zero-star score. The food - good as it is - can't pull up the number of stars much past two. My recommendation would be to get your sandwich to go. If you do that, you'll undoubtedly have a 5-star rating; the sandwiches are THAT good. read more

I had never heard of Firehouse Subs until it opened up right by where I live. East coast style sub shop that has a nice variety of sammys for everyone in the family. So now that it opened up I had to try it and I was not disappointed. It was busy as of course it still has a lot of hype around it and like other reviewers its a little crowded in there. But service was quick and friendly. I ordered up a specialty sub NY Steamer which is brisket and pastrami with some provolone. I went with a large sub and it ran $9.00. Not too bad but defiantly not cheap. Waiting for my order I noticed that they have a hot sauce bar, super rad that they did this. There are about twenty different sauces to choose from. The Steamer was fantastic, soft bread and nice mix of sauce and meat. I split it with my wife and a large filled us up. Seriously I would get this one again. Looking forward to trying some other stuff from here. Its right by my house so its a convenient. I notice in a lot of reviews that they are saying that it was over saucy, mine did not have this problem. As I try more of their sammys I will update if I get the over sauce issue. Jimmy Johns who?!! -__- Seriously if Firehouse and JJ were the only sandwich spots left I would go with Firehouse ANYDAY! Alexis B. and I finally decided to give this place a try since were always driving by it and hoping and praying that its not a JJ part 2 LOL! Upon walking in you would never know or think it used to be a Golden Spoon its a total transformation! We had such a friendly employee she walked us through the whole menu, customization and everything else in between, she was so kind and patient with us. Unlike JJ you can truly customize your sandwich and they listen to you 100% and don't hand you mayo and mustard packets! She was so thorough and went over order twice! I'm so glad she asked us if we wanted our sandwiches cold since their menu is based off hot sandwiches. For $18.00 we ordered 2 sandwiches, 2 bags of chips and one drink which isn't bad! We took our food to go and when we got home we dug in! They use smoked turkey breast which is still good for me, I like turkey both ways (deli or smoked) Their was an excellent meat to bread ratio which is rare to find since most chain shops (besides Beachhut) want to be cheap and give you mostly bread! Just found my new sandwich crush. This place is amazing. Had the brisket Sammie which was perfect in every way. Let's start with the bread, just the right amount of crust with softness. Bread is filled with brisket, I mean it when I say filled. They add some cheddar and then lather with Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ. Split a large with my husband. Glad we split it because it was huge. Overall meat was tender and tasty. This sandwich inspires me to try every sandwich this place has to offer. After contemplating between 3-4 stars, ended with 4 because of some guys in black shirts came in the end (finally) to offer help. Eventhough, I know it's opening day but it wasn't so pack compared to an army of workers standing around. After paying, I estimated it was about 10min of wait. Pretty poor I would say. I had subs from Firehouse before but originally from Jacksonville, FL. I would say I'm a fan due to the herbs and stuff in the subs. SO - this needed to be clarify. This Firehouse is a FRANCHISE, so I was disappointed after eating the meatball sub I ordered. WHY: Bread(wheat) - feels dried and stale. *shrugs* Meat - taste like a subway and the price was close to double of a subway for a large. $10 for a large sub with no drinks and doesn't taste superior to Subway...... Don't get me wrong, the original one originated from FL is way better. I think Firehouse subs is an east coast chain that just opened up out here. The theme is based on the original locations being owned and operated by fireman. This location is new and is very clean. They have 2 tv's that are usually playing sports. They are generally very attentive and will come by and pick up empty trays. Total seating capacity is about 20. Bathrooms are all so very clean. My wife ordered the steak and cheese with onions, mushrooms and peppers. The sandwich reminded me of a subway steak and cheese. The white bread rl the sandwich comes on is very good. I ordered the smokehouse Beef and cheddar brisket on a honeywheat roll. This sandwich was outstanding. The brisket was very tender and juicy. The sandwich also had a lot of bbq sauce. The sauce was not too strong so the amount of such did not overwhelm the sandwich. Overall I recommend this place if you are growing tired of subway and want variety. read more

Nice looking place with the fire fighter theme going on all over. Good Atmosphere. I had the pastrami/corned beef. The flavor was good but nothing extraordinary. I liked the super soft roll but it was the size that really put me off. Almost seven bucks for a medium 8 inch sub and my 10 yer old daughter would have still been hungry. The roll is about the width of a hot dog bun and wasn't packed with ingredients. It was a one handed sandwich that was less than satisfying. For $7.00 I expect more. I noticed the dumb milk that I didn't wasn't there & I know it only charges me like $0.99 but still i paid for the milk. The employee I was talking to seem like he didn't want to bother & thought I was talking about a different that he was prepping, asking if it was the order for John showed me the receipt he had & I replied, "No. For Jonathon" & I showed him my receipt & then he looked over at the refrigerator that they kept the bottles drinks & blunty told me, "Theres no more milk man", I just said, "Oh" & was looking confused on what to say next & he just told me, I can either choose from a soda or juice I chose the juice & asked if he can get it for me since I had no gloves, he was annoyed & just went over grabbed the juice & gave it to me. First time here, came for lunch with my boyfriend. He got the smokehouse beef and cheddar brisket and I got the meatball, so we could share them and try both. We ordered to go and I have to say the service was very good. We told the girl behind the counter it was our first time and she actually suggested we get two subs so we could try both. She also made one half of the sub a bit different to accommodate both taste buds. When we got home we tried the brisket first. HOLY COW....that's a good sandwich. The brisket is so tender and flavorful. Not too much bbq that its dripping down your arm and the cheddar was a nice compliment to this sandwich. The meat ball sandwich was also very good but in comparison to the brisket...it didn't really stand a chance. I am sure we will definitely come back to this place again! I am cutting calories so I am excited to check out their "Under 500" menu. Also as a sidenote; I LOVE the decor inside. The tables are red with a dalmatian print on top. SO CUTE! I got the brisket and cheddar sub sandwich and I must say it did not look like the picture. the picture shows a large fluffy roll smothered and cheddar and brisket what I got was a barbecue sandwich that was pressed and look like a Panini. After leaving from my last visit here I was pretty much over it, but upon leaving the owner talked with me and told me that his premium meats are a much smaller sandwich the specialty sandwiches are less meat. He suggested the hero which I got yesterday & here's a picture of it on a medium. It was yummilicious with turkey ham and roast beef with provolone cheese melted and I had all the bells and whistles on it. Then got a cup of chili. Its is a little on the pricey side for like 8 oz, just a little cup, and if you order it as a substitute for your chips and your cookie I believe it's like $3 extra. Regardless I had a free drink coupon for doing a survey after I left there restaurant last time. But I got to tell you the sandwich was really good it was juicy there was a ton of meat and a ton of cheese and it was just really really good. Michael the sandwich maker and the owner there trying real hard to make everybody happy . They've got a bunch of really different hot sauces on the side and it came with the really crispy dill pickle that I was very impressed with. Very crispy and very tasty.
