My friends and I went to this restaurant during a day trip to Sausalito. It is a little hard to find and by some warehouses. The style is very casual: you walk up and order and then take a seat wherever you like. The prices are pretty standard for the Bay Area, but the food just wasn't as good as I'd hoped. We tried and thought the following things: The pasta with trout and it was pretty spicy but also bland. Their salmon sandwich was at first very yummy but was actually way over salted. The tuna fish sandwich was by far the tastiest thing we had but it had way too much mayo which is either a shame if you're using fancy tuna or suggests that maybe they were using lower quality tuna at a seafood restaurant which to me is fishy (pun intended). Craving tasty, but modernized seafood near the water in Sausalito, I turned to Yelp for suggestions. Away from downtown, I thought the food would probably be better than the tourist traps! Parking was somewhat confusing, as there were two lots. Go to the boat dock/harbor entrance, as there were plenty of spaces (during the week). The interior was great-- it reminded me of a classic, New England-style seafood restaurant. The cashiers were quite attentive and friendly (possibly the owners??). I definitely think I should be able to pay for my $24 fish and chips with my credit card! The outdoor seating area was peaceful and typical of a Sausalito dining experience. The cashier brought my order out quite promptly. The fish pieces initially appeared huge! However, I quickly discovered the expansive air pockets in the batter-- a mix of air and grease! The actual fish inside was quite small.... The fish was certainly fresh and tasty, but it was quite bland! I'm not sure what other places do differently, but somehow the fish and batter taste seasoned. I ended up pulling most of the batter off and enjoying the fresh cod... The fries were the redeeming part of the meal-- some of the wedges were seasoned perfectly and fresh! There was no ketchup on the table..... This meal is exactly one of the things I wanted to experience while out here. Everything here is local, fresh and organic. The flavors are simple and highlight what real food tastes like. This is a bit off the beaten path. Outside the downtown area and to get here you wander through an industrial shipbuilding park. They only take cash or check. I ordered the catch of the day, trout, on a bed of greens, and my husband got the fish and chips. The salad was delicious and the fish and chips were outstanding. The breading on the fish was light and puffy with the perfect crisp. My husband and I both agreed that this was the best fish and chips we had ever had. Our two entrées and a couple of beers did set us back $55, but when you are going to indulge in food that was caught that morning you're going to pay a bit of a premium and I am OK with that. So. Fish served me rotten octopus tonight. Backing up a bit -- I'm something of a seafood fiend. I've eaten crustaceans and mollusks, freshwater and saltwater, vertebrates and invertebrates, raw and cooked, on six continents and numerous islands. This isn't meant to boast, but to make a point that I have at least a working knowledge of what good seafood should taste like. Fish in Sausalito has been somewhat renowned for their quality and ambiance, so I finally got around to trying it out for dinner. The sardines, delightfully sardiney. The salmon frame -- amazing. The octopus salad? Bad. Something was just wrong with it; the pulpy, stringy globs had that unmistakeable taint of rotten mollusk that sticks with you for the remainder of the meal no matter how you try to wash it away with other foods or booze. And look, I get it; sometimes something goes awry in the supply chain, a bad one slips in and spoils the meal. On the rare occasions it's happened at other places I've dined, I've brought it to the staff's attention, they've quickly worked to remedy the situation, and everyone's happy. Not Fish. Upon being politely apprised of the rotten octopus situation, the staff reacted with surliness and defensiveness, questioning whether we'd actually tasted what we'd tasted, and essentially refused to refund or replace the bad item. We tried clam dip, French fries, hot fish sandwich and tacos, everything was so different in taste , it took couple of bites to explore all flavors. Loved food just not spicy enough even the hot fish which was supposed to be hot. Loved beans salad, it was fresh and crunchy but probably not for those who are not used to flavor of beans. Order at their counter, and then grab a table, and place the number on it. Aside from bringing your food, everything is pretty much self-reliant...grab your own silverware, no tableside service. I had their delicious oyster po' boy with shoestring fries. I was not disappointed--it was hot, crunchy, and full of flavor! And I loved their crunchy fries. I had iced tea, and it was served in a mason jar, which I thought was awesome! We chose to sit outside, but it was a bit too windy, so we tried to sit under the tent. They were nice enough to carry in the table and benches inside for us, under the tent! Awesome! Decor = very rustic, nautical feel. Came back again. Had the BBQ oysters again...off the chain. Also had 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell, 2 each of 3 different kinds. All great and über fresh. Had the clam chowder and crab roll. The clam chowder was thinner than a traditional NE chowder, but that also made it less heavy and more clammy - I likey. The Dungeness crab roll is basically a lobster roll but with crab. But think butter, not mayo. It's a nice amount of crab and it's f---ing delicious. The place is def expensive and cash only. And for what you pay, you're not getting any additional service or perk other than the food...and to me, it's still worth it. The "Saigon Salmon Sandwich" is a $23 banh mi. It's also about as good as a sandwich can get. The SSS comes with your choice of fries, cole slaw or green salad. I had the cole slaw -- it was very good, and there was a lot of it. My neighbor got the SSS with fries and had many more on his plate than he could eat. I didn't see anyone with a sandwich and a green salad, but I'm betting that the salad was copious as well. I washed down my banh mi with a pint of Blue Star wheat beer and was sure glad that I did. Try it -- you'll like it! The Portuguese Red Chowder ($5 for a cup) was divine. There was some on our table; it was a privilege to taste it. The restaurant, food, and service were lovely. I'm more so here to warn people about the area and type of people that go to this restaurant. Please beware of entitled rich white people who feel it's appropriate to harass other families. From the moment my family and I got there and because we were speaking Spanish, the woman and her husband in front of me automatically had a weird disposition towards us. When my father (who is older and diabetic) and my fiancé, who was looking after him while I ordered, were simply LOOKING for a table for us (had not sat down like the sign says) this lady was quick to start an argument with me which of course I stuttered my way through because I was so caught off guard. When we got up to the register and she heard me speak perfect English she turned over to me surprised. The people in this community clearly only appreciate people of color when they're the ones serving them their food. My husband and I had lunch here today. I love that they work with a sustainable seafood menu. Everything seems very fresh and yummy. The have a well put together menu and some amazing offerings, including daily specials. Their food presentation is amazing, everything is extremely visually appealing. The atmosphere is good, friendly, and inviting. You wait in line, which can be quite long, to order your food. Then you find a available table. The food is brought out to you by food runners. They have a nice waterfront area to enjoy the little harbor they're nestled in. We ordered a bunch of different items, including; the cream cheese clam dip, 3 BBQ oysters, the grilled fish tacos, the fish & chips, grilled garlic toast, Apple crumb cake with cinnamon whipped cream, and an affogato. I will start with the clam dip. The clam dip was okay. To be honest it was a bit bland. I thought maybe it could use some more spices. It tasted like a mild flavored cream cheese to me. The house made chips were good and I'm not a huge fan of potato chips. For my entree I ordered the fish tacos. They looked beautiful. Everything about them. The fish was very flakey and cooked just about perfect. To me the tacos were also a bit bland and under seasoned, unfortunately. So I went after the 3 different sauces that were severed with the tacos. Sadly they too were fairly mild and just bland. I think one sauce was just watery ranch? I'm not sure. I hope it wasn't crema because it was so thin. Both salsa's were very disappointing for me as well. They were just so bland, no flavor. I guess I just expected a bit more flavor and spice from a plate of fish tacos. My husband ordered the 3 BBQ oysters as an appetizer. They were okay. They didn't really stand out. He also ordered the garlic bread, which was well, garlic bread. He said it was good. For his entree he ordered the fish & chips. The fish was very good. Extremely flakey and moist. He didn't care too much for the fries. The tarter sauce was a bit disappointing. Again, a bit bland. The apple crumb was pretty good. The crumb topping was great. The cinnamon whipped cream was wonderful. The apples were very tender and tasty. The only issue I had with this dish was, it was a bit watery at the bottom of the apple compote. It was still good, but I couldn't figure out why it was watery. My husband ordered an affogato with coffee gelato, rather than vanilla ice cream. He was pleased with it. I had really high hopes for this place. Every plate we saw go out was amazing! Every dish was just so appealing. I'm not sure if maybe we just ordered the wrong items, but I would not get the tacos again, unfortunately. I don't know of maybe we are spoiled, just arriving home from a week in Maui, but I found the seafood here to be bland. I would however love to give this place another shot and try that huge crab sandwich. I saw one pass me by on a plate, it was huge and looked delicious. Busy place - took 30 mins to get to the front of the ordering line - with great fish, chips & wedges, salmon, and beer. But out of a group of 8, I decided to be experimental and try their burger. Don't! Even for being "well-done", the ground beef was completely uncooked on one side and seemed as though the burger came from the freezer. Went to the Marin Headlands for the day and wanted seafood for dinner. Tried this place out and found it only so so. Got the clam chowder which was good. Then we each got the pasta with clams ($24) and shared a Caesar salad ($16). The pasta was thick, very al dente (almost to the point of being inedible), and not pleasant tasting. The sauce was extremely spicy from all the red chili pepper flakes. That's really all you could taste. It would have been nice to have these on the side to season to taste. It made the clams almost impossible to eat. The clams were plentiful and tasty once I cleaned the pepper flakes off them. The Caesar salad was fresh and tasty and quite generous. Food was really good and loved the outdoor seating! We got here at around 2:45pm on a Sunday and the line was pretty long - we waited about 20-30 minutes to order. Everyone had to order at the counter before picking a place to sit. It looked like they only offered outdoor dining but there were enough tables for everyone. We got half a dozen oysters, all Beausoleil, the Portuguese Red Clam Chowder, the Tuscan White Bean and Tuna Salad, and a side of fries. I liked everything except for the tuna salad - I expected it to be more of a salad and thought that it should have been smaller or have less tuna. Other than that, everything else was delicious! The oysters were crisp, fresh and paired well with the brine. The fries were the best shoestring fries I've had in a while. I want to say that these people work their tails off! The service always comes with a smile and we locals appreciate that more than you could know. FISH is amazing. AND it's unique... different... There are two different menus... a fixed menu and the ever-changing as the tides daily catch and "black board" menu above your head. The wine and beer are served in jars, casually, and the people who appreciate this place most are those who are open-minded foodies who actually give a damn about where their food comes from and how it is sourced. When you come here you feel like you're about to be joined by true fisherman and in fact, you may see a fisherman walk in with his fresh catch of the day... boots and all... and sell it to the chefs! You can even sit at the fish counter at the little mini fish market where all their fresh catch is available to take home and play chef with. There really is something for everyone here. You just have to communicate what you like and are looking for and they will help you figure out the menu. If you like goopy, overly flour-thickened clam chowder, don't try their delightful, perfectly seasoned, light, creamy version with plenty of fresh clams, potatoes, garlic and bacon! Who the heck doesn't like bacon? Unless you avoid it for religious reasons, you're fooling yourself. (We know those people secretly have baconnaise in their refrigerators, anyway!) A cup is filling, and it's only $5! To those complaining about the cost... seriously? A) It's the Bay Area, B) It's Marin, C) It's SUSTAINABLE -how can you not be willing to put your money where your mouth is... for your health and the health of our oceans and our world... good grief people! The name says it all. What else do you need to call this place? A fun and casual marina-side setting where the lines are long (even at 2pm when we got there) for good reason. We got the portuguese bean chowder (delicious), fish and chips (one of the best), salmon collar on pasta (what a sauce), the raw oysters (buttery/briny and maybe the best we've had), and the mussels that came with a sauce that was to die for. Wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Fresh seafood and fresh air, can't beat it! It gets very busy and yes, it's pricey but we love it and we are more than willing to pay for the quality. The Fish and Chips did have a lot of fish below the batter. The Portuguese Red Chowder was good but it's an appetizer, not a full meal, even as the cup (in my opinion). $70 plus tip for these plates and one beer. The views of the Bay are partly blocked depending on where you sit so not worth it for the views either. The Covid operations are very efficient. This is a tough one. In a simple sentence: good food but overpriced, and service isn't consistent with price. The restaurant is not really a sit down restaurant. I also got the Hog Island sweetwater oysters and they were good, but what earned this place 4 stars was the trout pasta and the crab roll. The trout was grilled just right, with a hint of smoky wood flavour. It was amazingly fresh and very flavourful. The crab roll? Best crab roll I've had, hands down. The bread is well buttered, and the big chunks of crab has so much flavour it was only second to the blue crabs I caught myself on the east coast. Service wasn't that bad, at least the guy who came by to collect our dishes asked how our meal was, but certainly not what I expected with the price. I finally got to try this place out.. Let me start by saying this place only takes cash, and it is not cheap. Now, like most people I am willing to splurge when it comes to seafood, especially fresh amazing seafood but unfortunately that was not what I received. The chowder consisted mostly of potatoes, and I didn't taste the clam's at all because of the heavy handedness of cilantro and potato which was a shame. Yikes! This spot was on the food network and we wanted to try it visiting from the East coast. We ordered online and did not see where you have to order in person to be able to sit down. Plus when you get there, you have to place your order inside and then choose a table. Anyway, there is literally two other tables occupied out of 20 and the bartender tells us we have to leave. We are also the only ppl of color there so it feels even more demeaning bc there's literally no one there. My suggestion is that there is some leeway in the rules, esp for low flow days to allow folks to have both options. Def made me cringe and the bartender acknowledged that we didn't do it on purpose but even worse suggested we go eat on a bench Lmaoo probably won't be back. Fish serves a very expensive Dungeness Crab Roll ($36), which is basically a sandwich. The cashier explained that it cost twice as much as another crab dish because of the "labor" it took to remove the crab meat from the shell. Fair enough. But the sandwich was filled with crab shell bits! And a sandwich is really not a food conducive to picking shell bits out of. When informed the cashier, he insisted that this was "normal" and that crab always has some shell in it. What?? If that were true, why would the labor be worth an extra 100% markup? I've also been to many seafood restaurants where this has never happened. Did they offer us anything? NO.
