I love Fly Bar! Every time I go here it is a great experience. I love the beer selection and the Soju mixed ginger drink. The drinks are reasonably priced, the bartenders are always friendly and attentive. I almost always get a spot at the bar or a table... even on weekend nights. They showcase local artists on the walls, always seem to be playing the right music to fit the mood, and have a very cozy interior. I'm a sucker for red walls and star lights. Brings me back to that college dorm room feeling. Fly Bar is great for a chill night to be comfy and catch up with friends. I haven't been here for years and do remember liking this place. Then the other night I went here on Saturday night and started to remember what I like about this place. I normally don't like going out on Saturday nights because places tend to get crazy, crowded, and its when the B&Ts come out (okay, okay, am getting old)... but this place, is definitely a locals place. The people that come here are diverse and just chill people with an edge (far from my Marina home) and the vibe is a very open one. The sangria here is yum - one of the things they are known for - and usually my drink of choice here. Great place to hang out. Its beer and wine with good music that is at pretty much the perfect volume (loud enough to hear, but quiet enough to hear your friends' conversation). The place is hip with out being snoodie or so hip you feel that you should have biked there on your fixed speed while wearing your skinny jeans and retro 80s t-shirt. First time in this softly lit little place, and found it to be a great place to grab drinks and and food with friends. I enjoyed their "not full bar" status as it kept the place very hang-out-with-pals/date friendly and the atmosphere was less of a meat market and more of a hip place to eat. We ordered the hummus plate, which served four of us with ease for appetizers, a pizza, which was small but again gave us all a taste, and then finished the evening up with the baked brie - another tasty treat. Everything was good. Not grandstand amazing, but certainly decent enough that were it a quieter spot, I'd bring my parents here to try it out. And they make cocktails from sake. It's different, interesting, and fun. Embracing the difference over here at Fly. Oh yes, and the service was really good. NO HARD ALCOHOL?! BOO! I was bummed because it was my first time here and I was excited to get pretty buzzed and play some pool. When I ordered some tequila the bartender told me they only had beer and wine and sake. Bummer. With the amount of sake bombs and beer it would take me to get the same buzz off of 2 shots of tequila, my tummy would be as big as Santa Clause. No thanks. Point is, for this place being a bar I was pretty upset that they carried no hard alcohol. Fly bar is another local hangout that I can be found in at least once a week. If good draft beer, easy going patrons and a friendly staff aren't enough to draw you in, try the half price pizzas from 3:30-6:30 daily. Their was a year of my life where I pretty much lived on the Book 'em Dano and North Coast Brewery's excellent Blue Star wheat beer. Alas, I am not nearly as broke and Blue Star is no longer on draft. Even if you are not hungry the Fly is a fun place for a relatively mellow weekend night. What I like about the place is that I know I will never get in too much trouble because they don't serve whiskey. I like Fly Bar. I don't love it, but I like it. It's got some nice things about it, and I'll allude to those, but you'll have to dig it out of cynicism. So, I totally get the fact that it's expensive to get a full liquor license, but you can't call yourself a bar if you can't serve me something over 40 proof. I know some of you will say, "but they've got Soju cocktails" and S*** like that, but that's just wrong. I lived in Korea, I know what's up with Soju, and Soju cocktails are all wrong. You drink soju straight-up (one shot!) and growl afterward like a real Korean does. They do have a nice selection of beers on tap and a happy hour to stay competitive. Good job. I live two blocks away and don't own a TV. So, this is where I go sometimes when I'm in the mood to see the Warriors lose. But dang, that TV is meant for the bartenders only and I'm gonna have to start using Yelp for chiropractor reviews. What's good to eat? Chicken Nachos. The first thing I noticed upon entering was the thick, hot air which engulfed me. Next, a strong smell of nachos that pervaded the air. This place is way too expensive for what they serve. The pizzas are mediocre quality but the prices are high. The drinks are pricey as well. I think they do a pretty good happy hour here, but I've never been around the location during that time. The soju cocktails are WEAK. I had four over the course of 3 hours and didn't feel a buzz. Unless you'd describe "buzz" as feeling like you could use an insulin shot for the diabetic coma you'll slip into after drinking a koolaid cocktail with a splash of sugar. I used to live in the western addition and found this a nice local spot. Sometimes there are floozies, sometimes not. Never went there looking for girls... just went there for what it was: a laid back place... good music (tribe called quest... all day), "neat" art. So I live in North Beach now and went back there for a friend's birthday. I go to buy him and a few friends a drink. As I am preparing to pay (I am a very nervous person) I start crinkling my 20 dollar bill. The bartender looks at my 20 behind a light, calls his manager over and they both accuse my 20 of being a counterfeit. They hold up my 20 against the other 9 20s I have in my pocket and show me how mine doesn't have a watermark... but unfortunately it does. They realize they are complete morons but continue with the charade. We're not going to give you your bill back. We're gonna call the cops. "FUCK YOU GUYS, I'M gonna call the cops" I bark back. "How stupid are you retard? And look at your dumbass manager! how drunk are you buddy?!" These girls next to me convince me that it's not worth my time, I pay with another 20. Leave no tip. Use my "counterfeit" 20 dollar bill later and no one says shit. Very unprofessional. Very insulting. I've never been dealt with like that. Unfortunately I didn't finish my rant about being from malibu, my $2k bracelet, or the remainder of the cash in my wallet. it wasn't worth it... but then again, who doesn't counterfeit 20s when they're wearing more than either the bartender or manager are going to pull in that month? I just love this place! I think I would eat here everyday if I could... It's loud and fun and hip. The bartenders are so nice and I enjoy meeting new people so this a cool spot to kind of get that social scene without the creepos trying to talk to you like at some clubs.. the girls and I came after a beauty day and shopping. 4 sake boms and 4 sake martinis each.. seems like a lot, and at first it is but they taste so delicious you just want to keep on drinking!! Usually I start a review with after a big bike ride blah, blah...well this time it was climbing. I've never been climbing before and it's awesome! But that's another review. So I went climbing at Planet Granite in Belmont, then out for a bite and a beer with a friend. I looked at my watch and thought, if I leave now I can make it home in time to pop into a new bar in the 'hood. Finished the beer, said my good byes and rolled hard. 1am....unload the car, pop out the door and down the street to the Fly Bar. I'm a regular at the Page, but like I said, I was feeling adventurous, plus I wanted a new place to Yelp about. Fly Bar is a cool spot. It was pretty low key when I rolled in. I kinda expected it to be a bit more lively on a Thursday. Any who, I like the look of the place, the bartender was way down to earth and I felt totally relaxed in there. No hard booze, but a good selection of beer and Sake. I had a local SF beer, Speakeasy Prohibition Ale, which is actually my new default beer. I've never been into the soju cocktail thing, but then again I've never tried them much. So since it's local I may give it a whirl. I also noticed they have sangria...which I'm a total sucker for even though it's sweet....my excuse, it's the Latin blood. Sangria calls to me. I'll be back, maybe I'll pop in there tonite as it's close and I'm gotta turn in early for a.....you guessed it...a big bike ride. I really like the vibe of this place!! Been here multiple times for food and drinks. If you're looking for a chill, dive-y bar for happy hour or for dinner, this is one of the best places to go! Their pizzas are good, their drinks are good and it's an all-around good time! The location is kind of small so you might have to wait for a table if you come at peak times (weekend evenings). It's seat yourself bar type seating but there's also tables so not everyone has to sit at the bar. It's always a great time here! read more

For some reason, I always end up here with company of the male persuasion. Sometimes that company is good, sometimes, well, not so much. What does that have to do with the bar itself? Nothing. I just wanted to have a little sharing moment. Fly's salads & pizzas make me happy, mostly because of the copious amounts of meat and cheese in both. I only had the happy hour $5 margarita here, but it was amazing. Maybe it's because I love when margaritas are sour and strong, but it had the perfect sour kick and the salt topped it off. My friends oven-cooked pizzas also looked really tasty too. The tables were all wobbly which was annoying though, but I'd come back. read more

I can now add Fly Bar to the long list of my neighborhood spots which have so much potential but just fall short. I walked into Fly at 2:30 today for a pre-Superbowl beer and a pizza. There were roughly 20 people in the establishment and not a single person was talking. I'm not joking - I thought I walked into a library. At least 4 people were reading books. I almost walked out on principle. Aside from the pizzas, I really don't like anything about this place. The strange, ubiquitous chubby children artwork creeps me out. The black ceiling and deep purple walls with long velvet curtains make me feel as if I'm trapped in some bizarre Goth dungeon. I want to be happy when I eat and socialize. I'd rather not dine in places where the interior designer cultivated the 'slit your wrists' aura. That said, the pizzas really are remarkable (minus The Southwestern - bland and no avocado, what a joke). The Pesto pizza is unreal. The Blue Caramel rocks as well. The half price pizza happy hour special (which exists on the weekend as well) is stellar. Yes, I just said 'stellar.' Deal with it. read more

Where do I begin? The food: The salads and nachos here are awesome, but I usually get the Cheese, Cheese, Cheese pizza and add pepperoni. Come during happy hour and it is only $5. Love this place! I would give it a five except that there have been a few times, at night, when I have gone here and it has been too crowded to move and I've had to leave. I like this place the most for happy hour. During happy hour they have pizzas for 50% off, making them about $5 each. These aren't crappy pizzas either. They are gourmet pizzas with things like goat cheese and pesto. If you want a mellow experience, some beer, and some cheap, awesome pizza then I definitely recommend hitting up Fly Bar. read more

Popped in a couple nights ago while bar hopping for the boyfrond's 25th. We came on a friends suggestion, as we'd never been there before. The decor is super fun! They are a beer and wine only bar (they do serve saki and serve saki cocktails.) There was a pool table I remember seeing, but it was completely occupied- but fun! The service was great. This is THE haunt for girl's night. Its a cozy little bar on Van Ness that has great beer, wine and sake mixed drinks. Their salads are varied and delicious and its a great place to gab with the girls. I would give five stars for food and drink alone but saving one. The only con is that some of the waitresses take their sweet time and service lags because of it. Not a problem if you stay awhile like we do but can be annoying. read more

I'm being very generous on my rating for Fly Bar. Service was good, sangria was great, Saki cocktails were ok (interesting), and nachos were ok . The crowd was chill and cool--lighting was dull and dim. I came to Fly Bar with high expectations from the reviews on Yelp and I left feeling I would probably come back if I had to, but I wouldn't jump through hoops to do so. Because the service and beverages were good I give Fly Bar an OK. Although, I got FOOD POISONING from the nachos, because of the great reviews from Yelp I'm assuming it was a freak of nature and something out of the norm for this place. However, what I was most irritated with was when I called the following day (practically on my death bed) to give them heads up to check their food, the weekend manager didn't seem interested, and asked if I had the flu instead. I think we all know the difference between a flu and food poisoning without going into details. He never asked my name or number and only brushed me off with an apology already tarnished by doubt. Not cool buddy. I was reluctant on Yelping about this, but because of the nonchalant attitude of the severity of this issue, I assume they wouldn't care if I did so. read more

Sake, Pizza, Great Atmosphere. It's all here at Fly Bar. This place is great for a first date (grab one of the two tops in the corner by the window early, when there are no sports on), hanging out with friends, or even stopping in for a quick drink by yourself. The bar tenders have always been nice, and pretty attentive to the crowd. You may have to wait in line for the bathroom though, so beware if you have a small bladder! FlyBar is the place to catch happy hour for sure, but get there early because seats go fast. Another great Divisadero spot with $3 drafts, sangria and sake, but this place it top notch. Drinks are great, food is great, and the staff is super friendly. We went on a Wednesday night just before happy hour was over and ordered nachos and beer. We arrived to a full house and luckily got 2 of the last seats at the bar because a couple people had just left. Staff was super attentive and made sure we had menus and drinks asap. Served with smiles all around and several people checked in to make sure we were doing ok. A+ guys! Our nachos seemed to take longer than normal at most places, and the chicken was buried at the bottom of the plate. At first we thought we got the wrong order because we could even see any chicken on the plate. They were tasty for sure, but I'm a fan of nachos with all the fixings mixed up so I can have some on every chip! We had several beers on tap and were lucky enough to catch the Poppy Jasper Amber Ale, a local favorite! We also partook in the sangria - thanks Kristina - and it was excellent! It took me 5 years to overcome my initial feelings of this place and adopt it as the cozy, friendly, neighborhood haunt it is. This is one of the places I can 'roll on in' to, pretty much always get a table, be treated with respect, and generally enjoy myself ( i.e., talk to the person I'm with). My favorite reason to come here is to have some beers and a little food before seeing a show at The Independent, which is just down the street. The place has a cool vibe and is a great place to have a couple happy hour beers with your friends. If it gets a little too crowded I'm out of there! It's too noisy and cramped. I enjoy this place for the occasional pre-show libation and snack, but not a staple in my bar repertoire. The pizzas are good and the beer is cold! Enjoy!~ read more

Eh... It's not Fly Bar's fault that I wasn't served any alcohol (I had just finished a run, and didn't have my ID on me) but the slow service certainly is. The tuna sandwich was also not more than passable. At the end of the day Fly Bar is not horrible, but with so many terrific bars yet to be explored in SF, I doubt that it is one I will be coming back to. read more

Happy hour here is excellent. Before 6.30pm the pizzas are half price, so they are all about $4-$4.50. They are "individual" size but they are enough for one hungry person (me). Having spent a few nights here I remain confused by the music selection. Seemed to be entirely filled with the type of hipsters who only listen to indie bands that are so under the radar, they don't even exist yet - but they were playing Snoop, Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def and other 90s rap. Anyway they have a good beer selection too - try the Poppy Jasper Amber Ale, and the Soju cocktails were excellent as well. A solid 4* bar. read more

As far as my one happy hour experience goes, this place was pretty awesome. Perks of happy hour include, a great selection of cheap draughts (19oz), fairly quick/reliable service even when the place is packed, 6 HOURS LONG! (12:30 - 6:30), 4 dollars-ish pizzas that were incredible, pretty good music, and plenty of seating. A lot of times when you order a pizza with pesto, it's overdone and too oily. I ordered the Greek pizza (artichokes, red onions, olives, and feta), and the pesto was perfect. Where else can you great pizza and a beer for under 8 dollars.? Based on happy hour experience I would give it five stars...HOWEVER...no liquor. Only beer, wine, and soju cocktails. But with their large selection, you'll hardly notice. read more

The place is pretty cool with some unique but actually frightening art. One thing I was not aware of is that this place does NOT serve hard alcohol, which is not a huge deal, but I did not realize that until I got there. The beer list is pretty good and cheap. Beers are either $4 or $5. I didn't have any of their Soju drinks, but the people I was with seemed to enjoy them. I don't usually get mixed drinks so rating bars comes down to service, cleanliness, and sometimes food. That last one is what gives Fly the 4th star. Their Happy Hours for drinks are more of a smirk than a smile ($1 off drafts) but their pizza ($6 at happy hour) is delicious and probably one of the best happy hour deals around. While not on the specials list - get the nachos. This was probably the single best plate of nachos I have ever had. Get them and thank me later. For the other stuff, the bar is clean and the servers are friendly. Last time the nachos tool way to long to come out but again, they were so worth it, it doesn't matter. read more
