Based on my visit today, I wouldn't come back. I got the fried shrimp and fillet basket. The fillet was extra tiny. The temp of the food was warm and not hot. Which surprised me as I had to wait about 15 min for the order. The fries were cold and very oily. The shrimp were good and tasted fresh. The hush puppies were also good. But if you compare what I got today to red lobster I would definitely choose red lobster. read more

We are in for a convention, the service is so bad we almost walked out. The cashier got our order wrong and the girl filling the orders was snappy and rude as hell. The Cole slaw was bitter and we threw it out. The red beans and rice was so starchy tasted stale almost, Hated it. Never coming back. The oysters were the only saving grace they were good. That's why it's not a one star. read more

I'm a fan I'm a fan! Atmosphere: There is nothing like a good ole classic seafood restaurant. I thoroughly appreciate the old-timey feel of the establishment. The decorations are great and there's ample amount of seating, from booths to tables. Food: The food is great! I started my meal off with gumbo and it was yummy! It's was flavored wonderfully and had a lot of meat. I then tried the shrimp and catfish basket and I was very impressed! The catfish and shrimp were fried to golden perfection. They had a nice soft seasoning and were moist and flaky. The crawfish were decent; not the best I've had but still good! read more

The line moved quickly. After ordering the wait was now long even though it was packed. The fish and shrimp were excellent. People in my party had gumbo, fried orkra, and fried jalapeños. You can tell everything was made to order. If you are an angler, bring in your picture of a catch framed they will hang it up in the resturant. read more

2018 Yelp 100 Challenge - #97 Flying Fish is a cute little hole in the wall restaurant. They have cute fishing decor all around the room and some of the decor even had Santa hats on. Upon entering into the restaurant we were greeting with a smile and a welcome from a young gentleman from behind the counter. While my husband and I were ordering more customer came into the store and pithing minutes the place were packed. They offer a ton of items on the menu and you are welcome to mix and match as needed. My husband and I ordered our food to go but there is plenty of space to accommodate a party of 6 if needed. I ordered the fired catfish with 4 shrimp and fries and to be honest it wasn't as good as I hoped. My fish was fried brown but it was literally falling apart when I picked it it. The shrimp were huge but lacked any flavor (Thank Goodness for hot sauce), and my hushpuppies were fried so hard. That I was afraid to eat them from fear of chipping a tooth. I had high hopes for this cute eatery but Flying Fish did not deliver. I was given a reward card after ordering but once I tasted my food, I soon trashed it. Cozy Cajun restaurant with an extensive menu! Ordered the fried shrimp po boy and substituted the fries side with corn on the cob. Shrimp po boy was great! Only got 2 hushpuppies on the side, wished there was more. Loved the corn on the cob too. The tartar sauce was a good pairing! read more

Or course another disappointment with this place. With my first experience, the food was not flavorful nor worth the price. I decided to give it another try and week or so ago because I was too lazy to go to a REAL seafood spot. I ordered the fried fish and shrimp basket. the shrimp was huge, and flat... it was fried pretty well and the size was nice, but there didn't seem to be any type of MEAT (if that makes sense)... honestly the food is just not flavorful in my opinion. I've definitely been to several seafood spots since I've moved here that kick 'Flying Fish' out of the water. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. A third time won't happen because I'm definitely not spending my money on this place again. It's only getting two stars from me this time, is because the drinks are good. read more

I have eaten at a Ft Worth location and enjoyed it. Using the fabulous Yelp App I saw the this location was only a mile from my hotel. I wish for fish! They have grilled fish on the menu so I ordered grilled Red Snapper with VeraCruz topping. 2 nice sized and perfectly grilled filets with a side of beans & rice. They have a large Snapper Veracruz but it is served fried. I am trying to be heart healthy and I made a great choice. Casual dining with counter service. Not fancy, just good fish at a good price. Be good humans. Support your local restaurants and tip generously. Restaurant workers cannot work from home. Too many businesses have already closed. If I could give more than 5 stars I would've! This off-the-beaten-path gem is clearly a local winner. You'd never think to stop in this place if you're not from the area. It doesn't have all of the LOOKS of some fancy modern place, but they've got all the flavor that is usually missing from the places that have spent all of their money on decor and not enough on a chef. I ordered grilled zucchini and I could not have been more pleased. I loathe a soggy vegetable (seriously nobody likes limp eggplant), but this was well seasoned and flavorful, and somehow still remained crunchy. I ordered the shrimp and fried okra. Everything was great, and I honesty can't wait to try something else on the menu. Food was phenomenal. Seafood and especially southern inspired seafood dishes are my absolute favorite. The only dish I had was the seafood gumbo. You can see the picture. Its served in a decent sized bowl with a bit of rice atop. The gumbo itself was quite tasty - nice and tomato'ey with onions, celery, etc... It gave it a nice, hearty flavor to it. Salt was on point and so were the other spices. There were bits of fish in there, couldn't really tell what kind though as they were extremely small. Also, a handful of decent sized shrimp - i counted 5 overall in my bowl. I would personally have liked a bit more, but that was all the bowl could hold. The taste was perfect, I left feeling like I wanted to eat the same thing again. Definitely will be back and soon read more

For our first visit, we ordered snapper and grilled chicken plates with beans and rice, grilled veggies, and hush puppies. We enjoyed the dishes very much. The mains and sides, as well as the tartar sauce and lemonade, were all excellent. My girlfriend, who loves seafood, said it was the best fish she could remember eating. I thought the "snappy" cajun chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned. We absolutely will return soon. read more

Came here today for lunch with coworkers. Got here at 11 because they said the place fills up quickly - and yes, it did. The greeter at the register was super friendly and welcoming. Be ready to be a little overwhelmed by the menu. They have everything you would want at this type of restaurant. Fried, grilled, blackened - have a lot of different types of fish and shellfish how you want them. I had the 6-piece fried oyster basket with fried okra and hush puppies. Every component of this meal was perfectly battered and fried - full of great flavor. The table is set with plenty of condiments including a good selection of hot sauces. After service at UpperRoom Dallas, 11 of us came here for fellowship and dinner on a Saturday night. This place was referred by a local Texan. Yeehaw! Ample free parking, place is clean and you walk up to one cashier to place your order. Service is quick if you know what you want to order. Friendly service. The menu has a huge variety of seafood to choose from and cooked from grilled, fried or baked options for main dishes only. Portions are large and the catfish is wild caught so that's a nice plus. Tables for 2 for the intimate dates or tables for 10 are available for big groups. Interior is clean and eclectic and amusing in their decor. There is a wall in the corner of the singing sea bass. Someone said that Flying Fish takes the unwanted gifts of the singing sea bass and I can see why? Would be a fun white elephant gift concept. Food: grilled salmon, catfish or trout is delicious. Tender and flavorful served with two sides. Large portions and if your two women who eats small, suggest to order one plate. I ordered the kids meal since I eat small portions and had a large fried catfish in their special seasoning. Oh my! Tender inside and crispy on the outside. So good, dipped in their tartar sauce. Also, my sides were French fries and the hush puppies. The hush puppies are delicious! My first time, I can eat more thou had discipline to stop. Looks like this place is a local favorite because the waves of people were coming in and out, space is large so you don't feel cramped. You do not get table service, very causal atmosphere. Even on a busy Lenten Friday our service was friendly and fast. They even brought our food outside when they saw me alone with my young son. First off it is Not a full sit down, order at the table kind of joint. You have to place your order at the counter and then pick up when it is ready. The decor is so-so probably suits a lunch rush crowd but not a romantic dinner place, if you know what I mean. Lost 1 point for that. I ordered the lobster stew, salmon grilled plate and the sweet water beer. The stew was cold, I got stone cold veg pieces and the broth was just warm and abbot too salty for my taste. One more point list for this one. The beer was really nice, cold and perfectly light. The salmon was also done exactly as I had ordered. The beauty is that there are a lot of fish dishes and the jambalaya I would like to try. I will go again one more during lunch and try other fish dishes and will definitely return the stew if it is served cold read more

I've tried this place a couple times and it's usually delivered really quick through the various delivery services, but the food is SO BLAND! I usually get the catfish and shrimp and this last time, the fish wasn't cooked hard enough, was rather slimy (that may be a "me" thing, cause catfish itself is hit or miss when it comes to slime) and just blah! I wasn't feeling it and felt sick afterwards, so I'm good on this place. read more

This place was good, and I'll definitely be back! I went for lunch, and had a bowl of gumbo with the grilled red snapper plate. The gumbo was delicious, a bit salty, but that's not unusual for gumbo. The red snapper flavored "snappy" (spicy) wasn't that spicy, and was a bit dry, but overall had a good flavor. I didn't have to wait for a table, and I was in and out in under 23 minutes! For a lunch spot when time is an issue, this is a gem! I have to say, the gumbo was better than other Cajun places I've been in Dallas, so I will certainly be back! read more

When I asked for her to come to our table just to pay her a compliment, we both practically teared up. She received it with open arms, no ego, no deflection, just pure, gracious presence. We ordered the fried chicken, greens, shrimp fried rice, biscuits, and hot water cornbread. The fried chicken was crispy and tender, but it lacked seasoning. I'd give it a 7/10. They served it with a house hot sauce, but surprisingly it had no heat and almost no flavor. I even asked the person I was dining with if they tasted anything because it was like pouring sauce on the chicken without changing the flavor at all. Once all the food arrived, there wasn't much room left, and even packing up our leftovers was awkward because of the lack of space. One standout that deserves recognition was the iced tea. It had what tasted like a subtle hint of mint and was incredibly refreshing. Easy 10/10. From the cuts of chicken we received, it appears they break down and fry whole chickens, which is perfectly fine. However, at $56 for a fried chicken that lacked seasoning, I found the price hard to justify. Maybe the cooking method or oil contributes to the cost, but I expected much more flavor for that price. Overall, I'd rate my experience a 7.5/10. Would I come back? Yes. I'd be willing to give Roots another chance and try something different from the menu. But when I hear Southern food, I expect bold seasoning and comforting flavors, and that's the one area where this meal really fell short.
