My friend and I were waiting what seemed to be a very long time for our order, in fact, other tables that arrived after us had already eaten and some leaving! My friend went to check out where our food was, and sure enough, our ticket got lost somewhere, hence, the reason why we never got our food. Well, the Assistant Manager, Matt, jumped in and rescued us and did the right thing, as a great manager should, and took care of us, including our choice of any item from the desert case. When our food did arrive we were both happy with our breakfasts and the fantastic coffee. We had the Ranch Breakfast, 2 eggs with your choice of turkey sausage. bacon or ham. Also, a Rise and Shine sandwich which is scrambled eggs, cheese and choice of same meats as listed above, on a homemade biscuit. Would I go back? Absolutely. I frequent this Flying Star location about twice monthly for breakfast- I love their SW Benni! But each time I go, my frustration grows with the idiotic ordering system, waiting in line while the cashier makes drinks, types in orders, assembles the tray, while others pass behind doing not much of anything. I have worked in many restaurants, and this ordering system may work for a coffee shop or fast food, but not for a restaurant. Too many people doing nothing behind the counter and too few actually serving your customers. I hope the new owners take note and update this system. read more

It might take you a few visits to find what you really like. I have been there maybe 100 times. Here is my order list: fish & chips, pecan pie, cherry pie, pineapple upside down cake, green chile sausage, athena salad, turkey plate, avocado toast with poached eggs. I do not care for their red chile (too sweet) or the way they serve breakfast eggs and bacon, but you might like it. I want my eggs over medium on a bed of rice. They have had some great dishes in the past that have disappeared from their menu. I like eating on the patio. Patios are a bit small and awkward at some locations, but the Rio Grande Blvd site has a great patio. That site is also next to a book store -- double whammy for me!! read more

Ordered the entire family delivery from here as it was near our Airbnb while staying in town for the week. We tried a plethora of various entrees. (French dip sandwich, stewpot chicken, dinner Mac n Cheese, Tofu Buddha bowl, Tomato Soup, Bacon Cheeseburger). The food arrived hot and tasted good enough, it was like a small diner vs a sit down restaurant vibe taste wise. One complaint: The French dip sandwich arrived with no jus dipping sauce that it was supposed to come with, which left that sandwich dry and boring. Ouch. Looks like it has the makings to be good but ordered a graburrito to go and for the price it was pretty disappointing. Basically all egg with a little cheese, bacon which I paid extra for and green chili sauce. Seemed pretty lazily put together. Huge chunks of egg more like they threw pieces of omelette in there and barely chopped bacon. Maybe it's just not what I'm used to so it will be somebody's jam but I prefer my burrito ingredients more chopped up for easier eating. It was pretty bland over all and literally paid $40 for two burritos a coffee and juice. Definitely a me complaint but I'm really tired of giant ass burritos. You don't have to make them so giant to be satisfying especially if all you're putting in them is a ton of eggs. The bakery looked divine too, but I stayed away from sweets and went savory. The French dip was really good tasting. Not overly toasted bread but toasted enough to dip in the au jus. The onion rings were large and crispy without tearing up the roof of your mouth. They really had a large seating area and the food was so good. I wish I would have gotten a dessert, but alas. My heart is broken... :( I was in such a good mood and thought I'd get some lunch here... something light. I'd never had their Soup & Salad so that sounded easy. The man who took my order, Alex or Alejandro, said they only had one soup, so no other choices, but it was the Calibacitas (squash) a vegetarian soup. I asked and he said it was good. When I got my order I saw a bright red bowl of super thick tomato concoction with tortilla strips on top. I tasted it and was shocked at how it tasted. But I tried a couple more tastes and I knew I could NOT eat this "slop!!" It was a very condensed super spicy tomato stew w a little squash in it. More like a thick picante dip. The couple next to me were surprised at it as well when I showed them. I took this back to the counter to the man I'd just ordered this from and told him it was "NOT edible!!" He seemed surprised, and offered No apology! I asked if I could get another soup like the Posole? He told me he'd have to charge me more money for it. Others at the counter heard all this. I was shocked! So he just rang me up a meal Refund and I left very upset. Others were shocked as well. I saw NO manager and Alex did NOT offer to get a manager. So I left planning NOT to return there. I've been going to this Flying Star in my neighborhood for years and now I don't think I will again. His Customer Service skills and ethics were lacking. I believe this management needs to do more Employee Training, Food Quality Control, and Improve Customer Service Skills especially with their much higher prices now. This place is so cool! A true local treat! We met some friends here for an early lunch and I had quite a few options as a gluten free, dairy free eater! The menu is labeled accordingly, but even some items that are not vegan can be made dairy free -- which was cool! Seven years ago, I visited this location with my brother for the first time and loved it. His daughter recommended the place, as she has enjoyed many good meals here. Subsequently, my brother & I have met here each time I flew into town before CoVid. Today, 12/29/22, my first visit since 2019, my brother & I met here for a disappointing lunch. Husband ordered for the 3 of us. When his hamburger arrived at the table, it was not even warm. The onion rings were acceptable, but they were not hot. My brother's sandwich was somewhat warm, and he would've preferred the french fries to be hot. My French dip was OK. It was hot mostly because of the au jus. The fruit was the best thing about the meal. I liked the apple slices, orange slices, and strawberry. All in all, three meals were disappointing. I love a good redemption story. We finally had a chance to give this Flying Star location another whirl. It was a busy lunch hour on a rainy Saturday but the line moved quickly. The staff at the counter were helpful and friendly. The table busers were working hard to clear tables as they became available since the outdoor seating area was being rained on. We found a seat and got our food in about 12 minutes. I had the French Dip and my husband had the green chili cheeseburger. The fries are DELICIOUS! We rounded lunch out with a piece of pecan pie. Flying star has been an old staple dating back to my college years. My favorite will always be the bakery options that they offer. So many delicious sweets that it's hard to just select only one. I ordered the eggs Bennie and they were just okay. I was hungry and I couldn't finish it. I got tired of the cheesy flavor. It was a tad bit overpowering. We also ordered the rise and shine sandwich on a biscuit. The biscuit was super dry and over cooked. Not good at all. It wasn't soft or pillowy , but rather hard and a tad on the cold side. Yes, love most of their menu. The Green Chili Stew was good - it's seasonal I think. I didn't like the fish tacos. Great salads, sandwiches and most other stuff. There is a nice atmosphere and you can eat outside under big umbrellas. Nice case in front of pastries and pies- I noticed over the last year or so they don't look like they used to- used to look mouth-watering and like a pastry chef slaved over each one. Now it doesn't seem quite the same and I'm not sure why. Cookies are still good! Flying Star is definitely still one of my favorite go to restaurants! read more
