When your bartender and beer nerd friends recommend a place to you, it's generally best to listen. And so, one afternoon, my friend and I hit up Fools Gold for happy hour. The place wasn't terribly crowded, which was just fine with me. I would estimate it had about 25 taps or so, all pretty solid and varied in style. That day, Ninkasi dominated the list. Bartenders were friendly and hospitable. Again, it wasn't super busy, but I'd like to think they would be the same no matter how big or small the crowd was. Kitchen was still in soft opening when we were there, but they had small plates. Location is ideal because it's in my preferred area and conveniently off the F, yet far enough from the chaos of the oft-shitshowy East Village. Happy hour runs until 7 and any beer with an asterisk is $5. I believe there are dollar oysters too. After a long meal at DBGB we were craving a place with a large tap list and zero attitude. At 10pm on a friday night this place had the perfect crowd density (busy but not over crowded) and an impressive list of 30 taps. It was just nice to be able to go somewhere where you could still get a bar table seat at 10pm. The severs were super attentive, yet didn't pressure you in any way. The decor has that semi-Brooklyn bar feel, yet doesn't go over the top trying to be a hipster joint (or a faux dive bar). It just has a great feel and vibe. I will be back. read more

Just had lunch here and it was great. I had the parmesan wings and my friend had the loaded fries. We shared of course, because that's a lot of food. I will be back soon again, the only downside is that the food took about 1hr to come out, that's a bit ridiculous considering I'm in soho.. but it was well worth the wait. I like the atmosphere, it's cool without being too cool, the bartenders are nice, and it's clean which is always a big deal. They have a great selection of beers on tap and their food menu is pretty interesting for a bar. Pretzels were great as were the wings. So great bar nice atmosphereand the wait staff is very knowledgeable about the Mixed drinks and beers. Have a nice revolving bar menu and beer list. They also cover a specialty drink on top every week and the last two times I was here they were phenomenal drinks. Having a birthday is a good excuse to make everyone go to a bar you want to try, especially when they normally wouldn't. Being able to make a reservation for 15 helps. Big crafty beer list and large wooden tables is all I need to be happy. Add to that one very friendly bartender/waitress who had no problem taking our jumbled orders. She legitimately seemed happy we were there (despite the loud debauchery). I believe someone ordered food that looked good, but didn't get to try it. Beers average along $7-11, while cocktails are pretty high at $12-16 (although very good I hear). The area would also be good for a quiet after work drink, so will give that a go too. read more

Last night we returned for more beers and food. With only one person working in the kitchen area, I am not at all surprised at how long it took our food to reach us. Also, the place was much more crowded than I had previously seen it for a mid weeknight. Despite a pretzel order mix up (which was promptly corrected by - I think - the owner), I am happy to report that the food was MUCH better this trip. Spring for the extra few bucks to have truffle oil put on your fries and ask for the Bahn Mi extra spicy - that took care of my remaining issues on the food! I loved it! read more

I love this place for the beer - always an amazing selection. I had their wings - so many pictures for the wings. The sauce was homemade buffalo (all of their wing sauces are homemade) but the wings, like many places were way over cooked. On top of that, they were small to begin with and what you end up with is a shriveled up, dry mess. So don't order the wings in my opinion - optimistic to try the truffle fries and their creative tacos - pho and another that is duck confit. read more

Also crazy good beer list (don't forget to take a look at cans/bottles!), and it's good stuff from all over. They usually let you try whatever so you know you'll like the drink. Great bar. Love the vibe of this place, which leans more divey but isn't seedy, and has a ton of personality. Awesome selection of 30 draft beers with personal descriptions from the bartender for each one, and there's a table with several games too, like Connect 4, Guess Who, Battleship, etc. Pretty decent size as well! Once you walk past the bar there are several high tables you can sit at. Music the night I was there was more funky and 70's ish which typically isn't my thing at all, but it was a lot of fun.
