Walking from Katz's my girlfriend spotted this place with a hop poster and graffiti, we knew they'd be the right spot. Just in time for happy hour and they had 4 Hill Farmstead brews on tap. All three bartenders were attentive and helpful, we enjoyed 4 beers and our bill was $25, can't beat it! The bar was very long so it had plenty of seats, and there were plenty of high tops if you preferred to sit away from the bar. This is how you do a gastropub. The beer lines are myriad and choices interesting, the space is large enough for parties of any size without being a total cavern and the food choices surprising while still pairing well with plenty of alcohol. Sitting right on the border of Alphabet City and the Lower East Side, Fools Gold isn't particularly close to my office but it's also on the way for home for colleagues who live in Brooklyn or further uptown. It's a place where the first time we came one beer turned into four and I arrived at the office the next day with much more of a hangover than anticipated. Beer isn't cheap here but you are paying for the variety and eclectic nature of the sours, ales and IPAs. I wish the non-speciality beers came in a full 16 oz. pint, but at least the menu is honest about the 12 and 14 oz. size of the pours. We eventually ate some truffle fries, nachos and white bean hummus. All of these were a bit elevated from standard bar food, but weren't overly fussy. All were quite enjoyable. There's some good happy hour specials on drinks and oysters, so it pays to arrive before 7 p.m. to get the first round or two in a nice price. read more

It would have been nice to be warned that Brunch was over but I saw the amounts of taps at this place and decided to settle in and have a drink w/ my gf. Brian(sp?) told us he would be with us in a minute and BOOM ! A fountain of information about anything and everything alcohol came pouring out of him. The guy knew everything, conversation led to me finding one of my new favorite IPA's Citradelic and my GF was completely satisfied with her cocktail. Really bummed I missed the grand opening where they had Pliny and Hill Farmstead on tap. The beer list when I was there was respectable. A trend I am seeing is to carry more and more craft beers from overseas. This place almost had an even split between domestic crafts and foreign crafts. I don't have a problem with any of this as some Belgian, Italian, and Swiss brewers are and have been killing it for some time. Our bartender was phenomenal (Matt). He was a master of his craft telling my fiancee and I about how he also recently got engaged while attentively serving several other thirsty parties without missing a step. I have been to the sister bar Jeffrey's and was happy to know that the food and beer was just as good in this one! I did not originally know the two were affiliated however! I had the house special of fish and chips and YESSSSS!!! It is the best I have ever tasted, perfectly crispy and seasoned well enough to diminish the fishy taste (which I was very happy about) delicious tartar sauce and just the write amount of food. It also had some kale salad as a side that had a ceasar like dressing that was also scrumptious! I can't remember which beer I had but definitely perfectly cold and it was on happy hour! After a recent late-night work event, my coworkers and I were hoping to find a 2 am meal that gave us both solid food and drink options, when most pub kitchens have closed in favor of full bar mode. Fools Gold was our spot! We ordered a table full of food to share: bacon jalapeño mac-and-cheese, Sriracha honey chicken wings, oysters... the list goes on. We were HUNGRY! Our server brought out samples of different IPAs for me to try and was very helpful when it came to describing their unique craft beer selection. I was wandering around this general area considering going to One Mile House like I often do when I happened to pass this place, which was brand new. I liked the open, breezy front of the place so I thought I'd just step inside and look at the taplist. I was mostly expecting the everyday "Baby's first craft beer taps" list from a new place but I was stunned by how good the taplist was, so I decided to sit down and have a few. Talking to the bartender, I found out the people who run Alewife run this place too, so it made a lot more sense at that point. Anyway, I had some truffled popcorn as a snack (nice big portion, a bit overly truffly and salty but... that's kinda what you want ultimately so no real complaints there.) The charcuterie plates looked good based on what other people were eating. Anyway, I really liked the atmosphere here, the bar itself was made out of this cool hammered metal kind of thing, typical edison bulbs kinda lighting deal, and when I was there at least, they had a great selection of punk music on. This is probably as of right now one of my favorite beer bars in the NYC area. If they keep the taplist this good, I'll definitely be back. read more

I find more and more bars looking like this. This use to be White Rabbit with a small dance floor, but now it's more of a dine and wine kinda place. No more fist pumping and getting wasted here. Great selection of 30 rotating beers on tap. All the staff behind the bars are nuts about beer. The kind of "geek" that has probably done some home brews before. Meaning if you're a beer person, you're in good hands. These guys are cool, always down for a chat, and very patient and nice. Draws a decent crowd and bar specials 6 days a week excluding Sunday. The food is bomb. I hear burgers are a staple but the wings - look, everyone claims to have great wings, but these guys (apparently) season the chicken with a rub and let it marinate prior to deep frying and tossing in your choice of homemade sauces (even the buffalo sauce is made in-house). The result is a tender, flavorful, fall off the bone wing. If you order at happy hour you get a free beer of your choosing as long as it has an asterisk by it. Lots of good ones to choose from too. Definitely a good happy hour spot. Lots of ladies for guys and lots of guys for the ladies. And you don't have to stretch your wallet to buy a potential date a drink! Worth your time. OH, and THREE bathrooms. THREE! Plenty of room for groups and a long, long bar. Skeeball (but pricey) and decent tunes at any time. Oh, and they allow pups. Dogs allowed! Been here twice over the summer, lastime as for a post-brunch cocktail. Large selection of beer, cider and cocktails. Love the distressed decor and the ceiling is so charming with the patch-work iron betina! Tasty snacks (only had the popcorn, pretzels, and if you like beef jerky, they make theirs homemade!). It was pretty easy to get a table around 9PM on a friday night, and the waitresses were really sweet. It felt cozy and has a nice vibe. Not too calm that I was falling asleep but also was easy to talk to my friends. The strangest thing about this place is that the french fries taste EXACTLY like McDonalds. I'm not kidding... I think someone ran out after we ordered the banh mi sandwich (not super authentic but yummy none the less, and super sriracha laden) to buy the accompany fries. Ceasar salad is nothing special and pre-grated parmesan is a big pet peeve of mine. Also came with the store bought croutons that can cause TMJ. Food is a 6.5/10 maybe 7 if you count Mickey D's fries. Good selection of beer and strong drinks, and really nice staff! This place has a great vibe, was clean and the beer and food were good. Pros: Both bartenders working were personable and down to earth. The female, in particular, had a great personality and was fantastic about recommending beers based on each individual's taste in the group. The sriacha wings were crispy, a little spicy and served piping hot. ( the sad 2 strips of carrot and celery made me laugh, they could have done better here) The fries were excellent ( think gourmet McDonald's fries)and the pretzels, although silly expensive, were worth it. Cons- holy hot. This place needs to install more fans or something, this is the sole reason we left for another bar. Also, an entire side of mustard was dropped on me, ( not mad at all, mistakes happen) but I was a bit shocked that I wasn't offered a buy back or comped for my pretzel after wearing mustard all over my pants. With this said, it wasn't a huge ordeal, and it gave my group something to laugh about. This is a great spot, with a laid back vibe and good food. I will certainly come back here again. Quality beer bar on Houston. A bit less bro-y than some of the others in the neighborhood. I believe this might be related to the Jeffrey up on 60th and 1st, given their menus are near-identical. Perhaps it's the address, but the portions are better at the Jeffrey. Both have fabulous beer selections though. We also came back for Monday night trivia and the place had a huge crowd. With new Craft Beer places opening up every 10 minutes, competition is fierce but Fools Gold is solid and would not hesitate to stop there when in the neighborhood. read more

We had a large, long table reserved, and I planned a 2-hour open bar package which my group absolutely utilized every minute of! This was my first time here and this place is a gem ! I came here with a cousin and one of his friends on a Thursday night and I would say the turn out was nice . The waitress was very accommodating to us and the food was delightful . I ordered buffalo wings and my cousin ordered the Mac & cheese that I wish I ordered for myself anyways it's super cute they have board games , all kinds from Monopoly to Sorry to even Uno cards for people to play ! I thought that was a nice touch . They had TVs everywhere with sports playing. This place is perfect for big groups or even if you wanna go on a date however it is noisy in there so not ideal for a first date well at least in my opinion. One of our favorite spots in LES. Awesome everything. The truffle fries are to die for, and the wings are on fleek. Owner is super nice, bought us shots after our basketball team won (GO DUKE) and the whole staff is super friendly. The chef wears cool Shirts too and man does he make a mean BECA Sammie (bacon, fried egg, cheese, avocado, on a DELISH roll) and its huge. They have a great selection of beers with LOL worth descriptions. And the ambiance is rustic charm. Love ya fools gold. Our only request...wish there was "take out" or "pick up" option. I feel like I got fooled after I went here, so maybe that's where the name came from. It was a hot day in NYC so we were hoping to get some reprieve from the sun in here but most of the people were still sweating even inside the restaurant. The use these light bulbs that just emit so much heat that made the place even hotter. For the food, I got the banh mi salad (forgot the official name) but it was the most underwhelming thing I've ever seen. The menu listed all these toppings that come with the salad but I literally just saw lettuce and chicken. There were like 3 small peices of each topping (such as the pickled vegetables) and even that sounds like I'm giving them too much credit. The chicken was meh and the dressing was good but just spicy mayo really. Probably won't be coming back here. OH! WAIT! we did order the mussels as an appetizer and those are actually probably worth a 5 star rating. I almost completely forgot about them because I felt so much anger towards the salad. So yeah, if you come here, make sure you get the mussels! read more
