This is an excellent little hipster spot that's actually not too pretentious and snobby as it might seem. It's tucked away in a really nice little area in the Mission. You go down a long hallway to get to the front of the restaurant, which opens up into a nice open air area with mostly outdoor seating, and some indoor seats as well. We came for brunch, but they apparently show foreign/indie movies on a screen projected on a wall in the outside dining area during dinner (when we came, the movie for the week was The Royal Tenenbaums). We ordered the Caramel Pecan Sticky Bun which was easily one of the best sticky buns I've ever had, and my wife is obsessed with them, so I have eaten many in my day. It was served nice and hot and the bun itself was nice and soft with a generous amount of nuts on top. We also got the Organic Pop Tart as another appetizer. This was not too impressive at all. After I ate a few bites of it I shook my head at myself for becoming "one of those" and spending $6 on a pop tart. I guess it did taste good, but not worth that much and it wasn't great. Aside from one bite in the middle that had a generous amount of the apricot filling, the rest was pretty bland and a bit chalky and cardboard-like in texture. But this was a minor misstep in an otherwise great experience. For the meal, all we got was the Croque Madame since we just had cookies and ice cream at Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous (we walked all the way here from there, so we earned it). Everything about this dish was excellent. Even the plain old salad was excellent, with a very tasty light amount of dressing on it. The fries were of the fancy McDonald's type, and were very delicious. And of course, the sandwich itself was awesome. It was probably the neatest Croque Madame I ever had, which was a welcome change from the usual runny, cheesy mess that they often turn out to be. Each bite had a perfect ratio of ham, egg and cheese and it made me wish I wasn't so full so I could try more of the likely delicious brunch entrees on the menu. The service was also very nice and attentive and they were polite to us even though we weren't dressed like hipsters and didn't order any alcohol, which was a good surprise. The Chinese Broccoli were well seasoned but did not fit well with the tuna. Would not order this again. Scallop Dish - The scallop was also cooked to perfection, but half the dish was covered in vegetables/fruits. The vegetables and fruits did not blend well with the scallop. Overall it wasn't worth the price, and would not order again. Ambiance - Amazing ambiance with an outdoor seating area with a movie playing on the restaurant walls. Why Haven't We Dined Here Sooner!!!?? Foreign Cinemas was Splendid! The Foreign Cinema has been open in San Francisco since 1999 - twenty years - and, for some stupid-in-retrospect reason, we had never dined at this restaurant. Last night, we went to Foreign Cinema to celebrate our anniversary and were so delighted with virtually everything - the atmosphere, the server, the sommelier, and the food - that we will likely become "regulars" at this restaurant. While sipping cocktails, we shared a dish of Norwegian smoked salmon, trout rillettes, caviar, pickled onions, and toast points. Every bite was a taste treat. The wine menu is extensive, with wines from all over the world. While we have experience with Californian, Australian, South African, and Argentinian wines, our knowledge of French wines is rather limited, but the sommelier came through with a delicious (and reasonably priced) suggestion among the various Bordeaux offerings - a 2012 Chateau La Payre, which paired nicely with our starters and main dishes. For my starter course, I had the halibut ceviche, aji limon chiles, avocado, spring onion, citrus jus, and plaintain chips. I've had ceviche dishes in many restaurants, including several in Peru, where ceviche supposedly originated, but the Foreign Cinema's version is one of the best ceviche dishes I've ever had, with a perfect balance of flavor, acidity, citrus, and the slightest bit of heat from the chiles. My husband's starter course was beef sirloin tartare, watercress, potato gaufrettes, Comté cheese, caramelized onions, and horseradish, and it was fantastic, with flavors complementing each other perfectly. For the main course, my spouse had a New York steak, sliced among artichokes, grilled peppers, arugula, and herbs. The steak was perfectly cooked to medium-rare, and the overall dish was delightful. For my main course, I had the peppercorn duck breast, fava bean purée, pluots, endive, raddichio, toasted hazelnuts, and pâté toast. The duck was succulent, moist, and flavorful, with the other components adding a nice balance of complementary flavors. I'm not a big fan of hazelnuts, generally, but the chefs must have some secret way of preparing them because I found them delicious, too! For dessert, we shared an apple huckleberry crisp, with a cinnamon-and-oat crumble, topped with gingerbread ice cream and caramel. It was fantastic. Yes, I'm raving about our meal at Foreign Cinema; we were delighted with the total experience - and just regretted that we had not started coming here sooner, but we will definitely be back soon! Clearly about 20 years in business, they have not lost their edge, but have continued to deliver a flavor-packed meal with friendly and professional servers. A visit to Foreign Cinema when I was visiting SF was a must after hearing about their homemade (strawberry) pop tarts, seriously make sure you get one. The ambiance was lovely, the menu was creative and the service was excellent; the waitress even promptly refolded our friends napkin and adjusted his chair when he left the table. I loved the industrial chic atmosphere and overall posh vibe Foreign Cinema gave off. The wait was a little long (an hour), but I'm told that is to be expected whenever you get brunch (plus it was a Saturday!). They do have a bar in front that we sat at and got drinks before being seated, so that was a plus. We sat in the huge, gorgeous dining room with large windows and open doors letting the sun spill in. This was needless to say one of the fancier restaurants I've been to, but worth every penny. I wish I could have squeezed in the dinner experience on their covered outdoor patio area where a schedule of foreign films are projected onto a giant concrete wall... next time. I got the homemade organic strawberry pop tart (they also had apple!) and the balsamic fried eggs over roasted garlic-potato hash and mixed chicories. My boyfriend surprised me with a reservation here for my birthday. I was ecstatic when we walked in since I had had this place bookmarked for a quite awhile. The exterior looks like a cinema, as well as the hallway leading into the dining area. Do make a reservation for dinner, as they were packed the entire time we were there. They have heat lamps so I advise bundling up and sitting outdoors to enjoy the films they play when it gets dark! The film is more for the ambience, but we thought it cool nevertheless. On this visit, we ordered the grilled calamari to start, and ordered their fried chicken and pork chop as entrees. I loved the grilled calamari. It was flavorful and perfectly juicy. The pork chop was my favorite of the three! The pork chop may look dry, but it is so tender and juicy! Our server recommended that one and boy am I glad we took his recommendation! The salad and peach paired perfectly as a side. I thought the fried chicken wasn't bad, but I wouldn't write home about it either. We were too stuffed for dessert but will definitely order dessert next time as they looked promising! It gets a bit too loud (as expected) since the place is popular. Slightly pricy as two entrees and an appetizer came out to nearly $80 before tip. Street parking available from what I've observed, but difficult around the area. Remember to lock your car as the area isn't the safest! All in all, really glad that I got to try this spot and will definitely be back to try brunch as others have recommended! read more

I had dinner here ages ago and til this day still have fond memories of my fabulous meal at Foreign Cinema. Been dying to come for brunch so arranged to meet up my friends here for at 11am right when they opened. We were promptly seated in their covered and heated courtyard and proceeded to order the following: Smoked salmon, french toast, black truffle omelet, poached eggs, chanterelle & farm eggs, crab fritatta, croque madame, and 2 sides of brown sugar bacon. My absolute favorite dishes were the french toast, glazed bacon, and the bf's farm egg dish. Sunny side up eggs with mushrooms and polenta YUM. My friend's poached eggs dish also had an amazing combination of flavors. Delicious gourmet dishes and you won't be able to find elsewhere. Amazing food, impeccable service, and an upscale ambiance definitely deserves 5 stars! Woohoo! As good as it gets! read more

WHY THE HYPE? I don't understand. Stop it San Francisco! At least for dinner service anyway... We ate dinner here last night. We had reservations from Opentable via Yelp. They were professional and confirmed the reservation and were gracious when we showed up a little late (we did call ahead though!). We were seated inside (our preference) near the fireplace. It was cozy. Our waiter was not very bright. He looked out of place and did not have confidence in the food or what he was saying. You can tell he was not passionate about the product. He was not very quick either. Other than that, the Poltergeist cocktail was pretty damn good. The beef carpaccio is overrated but was ok. I'd rather order something else next time. The warm brie with pears, cranberries and walnuts was fantastic but the portions were tiny. We had brioche toasts leftover but not enough brie. The sesame fried chicken was perfectly battered. This was the main reason why we came here and it was over hyped. It was ok but not mind blowing people! The fried skin was sweet and caramelized. I like it but think I'd rather stick to brunch here than their overpriced and grinch-sized dinner plates. The "mint" creme brulee where I could not taste any mint and the peppermint bark (the size of my middle finger) was dismal. The creme brulee at buffets taste better than the one we had. And literally the portion was two spoonfuls. Maybe two and a half for $9. I'd rather eat an expensive bite of toro than a spoonful of their dessert. And do people really come here to watch the foreign movies? You can do that on Netflix if you are so inclined and cultured. Came here for Saturday brunch with friends. Place is nice and bright. It makes the place look bigger. Definitely popular. I ordered the french omelette with salad. Salad was well dressed. It's been a year since I came to foreign Cinema and I must say I am happy that nothing has changed. It's still a wonderful location that server delicious fine American cuisines. But one of the most memorable aspects about this restaurant is that it has the best backdrops/ outdoor seating areas that I have ever been in. You see every night on a huge wall they play classic foreign and American films. So you're actually being entertained while you're eating their delicious food. It's an experience that tantalizes the senses and makes you want to always come back. I can remember the first time I came here. I was brought here by my wife for an anniversary dinner and I must say from the outside I thought it was just an old theater. But as you step inside of the building your transformed into this 50s/ 60s style theater but with plush carpeting and fine dining as well as a beautiful decor. Now I highly recommend that if you do go you make sure you get a reservation because it does get extremely packed. It's not the biggest venue there is but it does have a good enough size for a number of people to dine. Which makes it extremely popular on top of everything else that I've mentioned. Dining here isn't cheap but is definitely worth it. The staff here have always been friendly and engaging. Delightful and charming, with the energy of teenagers. They always make sure that their customers are always treated with a higher level of respect. They also have valet, which can fill up pretty quickly. I suggest you use the valet services just because the mission is always crowded and once people find parking they hate to give it up. Overall this is a unique dining experience that gives a combination of Romantic yet playful ambiance. So if you have any special occasion coming up or you just want to enjoy a nice romantic evening. We tried a variety of dishes ordering family style and nothing really caught my attention. We ordered the Snake River Wagyu beef which was a bit chewy and not very flavorful including the end pieces. We ordered a variety of oyster types with an emphasis on not small a sure enough, some were quite small. We ordered Grilled Tropical Mahi Mahi which was like the steak, a bit chewy with little flavors that were not memorable. The Marinated Beet salad was not bad as well as the Santa Barbara smoked salmon but overall the menu was impressive in the descriptions but anticlimactic in the consumption. I would enjoy dropping in for cocktails and the atmosphere but not the food in my limited experience. I have been trying to come here for a looong time and finally had the chance to visit last weekend for a girls night. My friend was able to snag a reservation at 6pm on Friday. We were originally seated outside, and while there were heat lamps, it felt windy out. The host was able to move us indoors within a few minutes. The outside courtyard and the indoor decor is so cute! The moving plays outside but starts around 8.30pm. The food was amazing!! We ordered a few appetizers, which were tasty but the entrees were phenomenal. We had: - pork chop: we hesitated on this at first, but so glad we got it. The meat was delicious, so tender and juicy. - steak: this was served on corn with some greens. The steak was juicy and cooked perfectly. - fried chicken: this had a bit of a curry flare to it and it was fantastic! - blueberry custard cake for dessert: perfect end to our meal. Not too sweet and tasted very fresh. We asked our server for recommendations and we loved everything he suggested, the staff knows what they're talking about. We had an amazing experience and the food was delicious! My only complaint was we felt a bit rushed while we were having our main course as the staff kept asking to pick up our plates while we still had more than 50% of the food still on it. If you asked God to take you to food heaven and he listened - this is where you would end up. Seriously. The drinks here are incredibly tasty. I think I was tipsy before the appetizers hit the table. This is an amazing place for a date. If you sit outside in the patio on a nice evening, you're money. Their mephisto drink was particularly tasty. It was oj, stoli, cointreau and campari. Yum. The service here is OUTSTANDING. They give you space, are friendly and attentive. One example of their great service is the carpaccio I ordered. It has some horseradish, which I absolutely can't stand and they took it back free of charge and replaced it so it was horseradish-free. I left an extra tip for that. The steak was the best steak I have ever had. AMAZING The deserts here were incredible. I had the apple crisp with caramel sauce and a hot chocolate cake. This place has a great ambience! There's usually 4 areas for dining (patio outdoor with movie screening, indoor art gallery with movie screening, indoor seating area, balcony / upstairs dining area). With COVID, only the downstairs options are open. If it's a cold night or day, I highly recommend you request the art gallery! It was such a unique experience to dine in an area surrounded by large modern art, and also had great service too. The food is a little butter (hog island clams are slathered in butter - I would skip these if I were you), but the chef's specialty (pork and wine pairing) was delicious and melt in your mouth good! The menus are changed daily (they print the movie playing and date on them) and it was difficult to find photos of the dishes on yelp since the menu changes frequently. Both my kids loved it. This place has beautiful ambiance (indoor and outdoor). Unfortunately, we were there around 5.30pm to 6.45pm and they did not play any movies. The food was delicious. Only suggestion, make reservation prior to coming. I heard there is wait line between 30 minutes to 2 hours. Luckily, we were able to get a table when they opened without any wait line. My friend took me here for dinner when I visited SF, and it was definitely one of the more memorable meals I had. - Sliced Hawaiian hamachi ($16): we started off with this as the appetizer, and it was a solid dish. The hamachi was sweet and creamy, and the taro chips provided a fantastic textural contrast. The wasabi tobiko and the avocado mousse were also pretty unique. Good start to the meal. - Petite Santa Cruz lettuce ($9): pretty small salad that came with wild huckleberries, toasted almonds, and white Verjus (whatever that means...) vinaigrette. Despite its simplicity, this was actually one of my favorite dishes of the night. The flavor of the vinaigrette was fantastic, as were the huckleberries. The lettuce was also very soft. - Plancha of Monterey calamari and clams ($15): not particularly memorable, but didn't regret the order. I thought they could have been a bit more generous with the seafood, but the accompanying tortilla chips were delightfully crispy and perfectly salted. - Catalonian seafood fideus ($32): my friend ordered this so I have limited input, but the waitress said this was very similar to a paella.... and I strongly disagree. It was more of a broth with some noodle pieces and seafood. Thought they could've done better, especially for the steep price tag. Service was attentive and efficient. Atmosphere was absolutely fantastic (and quite romantic). We sat outside, and the strung up lights along with the giant screen with the movie made the ambiance very open but cozy/romantic at the same time. Would definitely recommend you sit outside. Their menu does appear to rotate and change quite frequently, so my reviews of specific food items are likely outdated, but I thought that overall, the food/service/ambiance at Foreign Cinema is quite solid. I ordered: - the salmon appetizer ($15) -fried chicken ($25) -pot de creme The food overall was good, but doesn't have me dying to come back. Along with the fried chicken I ordered, I tried my friend's pork chop, and that was good as well. Dessert wise, the pot de creme was actually too rich/chocolatey for my liking and I love dessert, but the waiter said it was the most popular dessert item. My girlfriend and I tried to hit up el techo on a Sunday afternoon only to find the wait to be over an hour... So we decided to head next door to foreign cinema. From the outside its just a big steel door kind of like the ones you'd see in front of strip clubs, but once I stepped through the doors I was like WOW this place is amazing! The restaurant itself has a beautiful interior as well as outdoor patio seating with lights strung above. A really nice place to dine when the weather's good. The wait was around 30 min for a table but we were able to grab seats at the bar and have drinks while we waited for our table. We ordered a Persian Bloody Mary and the serpents kiss. This was the first Bloody Mary I had ever tried and I must say it was pretty good, a little spicy but good. The serpents kiss was also really good and refreshing. After about 20 min we were seated outside in their patio area. We ordered oysters, lavender goat cheese with bread, tuna ceviche, and the balsamic eggs with potatoes and prosciutto. Everything was amazing! And not just because I was buzzed. I usually HATE oysters but gave these a shot and they were heavenly! No oceany taste or crunchy sand bits. The onion vinegar that they serve with it was great for masking that ocean taste. And I also don't go for goat cheese but this one was sooo good with the poached pears it was served with and you could really taste the lavender flavor. Of course we got talked into ordering dessert, and then the problem became which one do we try? We ended up ordering two.. Lol the lavender caramel flan with honey comb and the cheesecake. My boyfriend and I came here for his birthday with no expectations! We were impressed by the interior which Foreign Cinema has been around for awhile. The staff were very professional and fun as well. Obviously, their theme are movies but decorated to keep a classic feel. The front entry way had a movie poster and double doors. You enter into a long hallway and walk down the red carpet to the hostess! There's outdoor seating and indoor. We had reservations for 7:30 and sat down after arriving around 7:20! It's incredibly popular around dinner time, so I would suggest a reservation! We were in a corner spot inside but could see the entire restaurant. As soon as it gets a bit dark the patio lights glow a warm hue and the movie turns on. A pretty cool setting! We started off with cocktails and they were delicious! Fresh baked bread came to the table steaming right out of the oven. There were plates to be shared, so we tried the goat cheese with the fig leaf and strawberries. It was delicious! Ordered separate mains, the curry fried chicken and the five spiced duck! Both were amazing and full of flavor. The fried chicken were two big pieces. Almost couldn't finish it! We couldn't skip out on dessert so we ordered two! The peach blackberry crostata and the blueberry shortcake was so incredible! I was blown away. Our waiter was so nice! He felt like we were rushing through our meal and offered to discount our desserts, plus on our reservation I had put 'birthday' as an occasion. There's something so nice and relaxing about eating outside. Once you find the location, you'll open the doors to a long carpeted hallway that leads to the actual restaurant. There are some indoor tables and a bunch more tables in what looks like a spacious backyard. It would have been nice to try this place out for dinner since they show indie films and classic films on a screen projector at night. Instead, we enjoyed a nice brunch here one sunny afternoon. We ordered... Viva L'Italia - Campari, orange & grapefruit, sparkling wine: tart, sweet, bubbly, refreshing cocktail Beef Carpaccio, dijon horseradish creme, potatoes, fried Rosemary, olio nuovo: The beef was not bad. The potatoes are basically little potato chips. The carpaccio was shaved so thin that it clung to the plate, so I needed to use the fork to scrape it off to eat it. It had a mild flavor on its own, so most of the taste came from the dijon horseradish and salty potato chips. The olive oil drizzled on top helped everything come together a little better. Pork Pastor - 2 eggs, pork, guajillo peppers & anchiote, mojo verde, queso fresco, plantains: I believe this was one of the brunch specials at the time and it was delicious. The eggs were cooked perfectly as the whites were soft and springy, and the yolk was nice and runny. There were chunks of pulled pork that tasted great with the verde sauce. Everything else went together nicely with the peppers and queso cheese on top. The crispy plantain strips were a nice touch, but definitely needed more seasoning. Rich Duck Liver Pate Toasts, Ecopia Lettuce, Five-Spice Cracklings: The pate was deliciously sweet and creamy. The dressed lettuce added some acidity and cut through the rich pate. The cracklings added additional flavor and crunch. I thought the bit of mustard on the side was unnecessary. The toast was just a touch burnt. Overall, the food was pretty solid, albeit a little expensive. I've had better carpaccio, but I enjoyed the eggs pastor. I would definitely like to return one day for dinner and a show. read more

I really liked the atmosphere and setup of this place. It really was like a movie theater and if you sat outside under the string lights, you will see a movie casted on the building outside. The food was really good! We ordered avocado toast and beef carpaccio. Both very tasty and healthy. My husband ordered the sesame chicken and I ordered the duck. Medium raw was the perfect temp for this duck! It was juicy and paired well with the pickled cabbage side. I really liked the pickles cabbage, but the other pickled veggies were bitter tasting. There was also a hair in my dish. My husband's chicken was extremely salty. Unfortunately everything that touched the chicken also was equivocally salty. He tried to eat his chicken but it was just too over seasoned. Overall it was a good dining experience and great food. 5 stars is rare for me, however tonight's experience deserves it. We started with a cocktail in the bar. A speciality drink, champagne and an Aperol Spritz. They were all wonder as was the bartender. We were then seated and ordered Oysters and and the Charcuterie plate. My friends had the oysters and said they were really yummy. The charcuterie was nicely done too. Our server, Sara was top notch. She was really good at timing everything. We never had to ask for a thing. Our entrees arrived, 2 of us had the Pasta and another had Mahi Mahi. Both dishes were very tasty! We ended with the Butterscotch Pot de Creme and it was an amazing dessert! Great service! read more

Come here for the pop tarts. Absolutely insane. I ordered a hamburger and a porkchop as an entree, but they ran out of both meats. The waitress asked if we were okay with a pastrami burger and a steak instead, and both were SO BOMB. Would come here again :) read more

The Bloody Mary's are fabulous and so are the pop tarts, both brunch favorites. I have been eating at FC for 17 years and have never been disappointed at brunch or dinner. It is a family favorite for celebrations. read more

My friend and I actually stumbled upon Foreign Cinema by accident. We were walking down the street looking for quick drinks to pass our Friday evening. We didn't have reservations but we took it as fate when the charming host told us that a party had canceled theirs and were immediately accommodated. To say that we were blown away is an understatement. Food, drinks, service, ambiance were all fantastic. There is a reason why this place is packed! Foreign cinema continues to deliver. Some restaurants waiver in their ability especially after getting a solid reputation. The staff makes sure everyone is happy and cared for, without hovering. The space is feeling a bit dated but overall still an atmosphere that offers cool vibes. read more

Yum, yum, yum. Came here for brunch today. And luckily we had reservations. Man the line to just get in was horrendous. MAKE RESERVATIONS!!! We sat outside and thankfully the weather was pleasant. It helped with the noise issue as well, b/c there were 6 ladies in our party having discussions that ran the gamut! I consulted Yelp before hand to see what to order. And was still waivering between 2 things. Funny thing, 3 ladies on one side of the table ordered 1 of the dishes, and the other 3 ladies on the other side of the table ordered the other dish. I had the French toast and I'm so glad that I did. I was afraid to see how hard the "toast" was being that it is made from a baguette, but every bite was tender and delicious. The banana was just the right amount and so fresh. I think I could have eaten the toast and bananas alone with no drizzle of the organic maple syrup, but that would have been NO fun. I also ordered the FC chicken sausage. Just the right amount of savory and sweet. The other dish was the chanterelle and champagne omelet which was also very yummy. read more

A couple years ago, I came here for dinner and enjoyed the experience. We sat inside, had a table in the corner and the ambiance was nice. In April, I decided to try their brunch since I had a $100 gift certificate. We sat outside this time and ordered: Organic 'pop tarts': strawberry-rhubarb ($6.75) - I don't get the hype. They weren't soft like pop tarts, but rather a little crumbly. The filling was okay, but there wasn't much of it. Beef carpaccio, ancho-horseradish, potato gaufrettes, piave ($14) - This was good. I enjoyed the ancho-horseradish with the beef carpaccio. Santa Barbara smoked salmon, sweet mustard sauce, pickled onions, caperberries, frisee, dill, tobiko, toast ($15) - I liked the frisee and tobiko in the dish. It complemented the smoked salmon well. Oaxacan style prawns cooked 'on the iron,' tomato-habanero sauce, chickpeas, potatoes, tortilla chips ($15) - I didn't really care for this. The prawns were overcooked and the sauce seemed like it should have been paired with pasta or something that could hold up to the heaviness of it. It just overpowered the prawns. Champagne omelet: maitakes, raclette & comte, creme fraiche, potatoes, small salad ($16) - I enjoyed this. I love eggs, mushrooms and cheese so I was happy. Slow-cooked brown sugar alderwood smoked bacon ($7) - It's bacon! How can you go wrong?! I actually wished it was crispier, but it was still good. No one wants semi limp bacon right?! House ground burger, russian dressing, house made bun, lettuces, onions, fries ($14) +fried farm egg (+$2) +cheddar (+$1.50) - Just your average burger. Not much to say about it. With one drink, our total was around $115, so with my gift card we only paid $15 plus tip on the whole amount. Not bad at all with a gift card, but if I were to pay the whole amount, I'm not sure if I thought it would have been worth it.
