*small update at the bottom* As a gluten free person whose bakery options are few and far between, I wanted to love Forest and Flour. We bought a baguette, a monkey bread (monkey party), and were gifted a free bun. The person at the counter was polite and friendly. We followed instructions exactly on the instruction card about how to preserve and prepare these items. Unfortunately all three were quite dense-- the baguette and bun unpleasantly so. The monkey bread had a nice cardamom flavor but we couldn't finish it because, again, so dense. For the premium price (in addition to a 20% "staff wellness" charge on every order) one pays, one would hope it would be edible, but the baguette is completely inedible despite following their exact instructions. From the google reviews, it's clear I'm not alone in this opinion. I want to clarify that the issue isn't the high price-- I understand a livable wage for their workers is necessary. My complaint is that it's a waste of money to spend so much on something you can't even eat. Note about the owners reply below: I believe they have me confused for somebody else. I have never posted this same review on another platform! It is strange to me that they decided to respond to my review in this fashion simply because my name or my review is similar to another bad review they received. In this same vein, I think we can all agree that a standard baguette is longer than 5 inches, so it's strange that the owner is choosing to critique that particular facet of my review. This is not an american ideal that I have been "educated to want things bigger", but just a fact that French baguettes are traditionally of a significant length, that the price F&F charges is reflective of a larger size, and that I was quite surprised to find it was so small. read more

We made a mistake of going to the location where they do the baking... Met the owners and they were super nice and helpful. Since we weren't from the area and was just trying to get a GF fix, they gave us the rundown where they sell their goods. They were so gracious and gave us a sample of the carrot muffin, matcha muffin, chocolate cookie and chocolate muffin. I cannot believe how moist they were and not super sweet. Love that their good are DF, SF and CF as well. Not sure about eggs but perhaps they can clarify this. I ate them all anyways and LOVED them. WOW are the prices high for what you get! I know they source locally and have read their site about costs, values, etc, which I appreciate, however the bottom line is 3 of the 4 items I purchased were really not good - I'd be willing to pay this much only for yummy food. I ordered the French toast to eat at the restaurant, which I found to be really dry and lacking flavor unless dipped in the syrup they provided. The orange spread was okay, but was mostly made of rind and not well paired with the bread. I did really like the matcha latte! I purchased a baguette and monkey cinnamon muffin to go and was really disappointed with both. The muffin had good flavor, but was again very dry and dense, and even after putting it in the microwave briefly it didn't soften up the same day I purchased it. The baguette was the worst of everything I purchased - the crust was so incredibly tough and thick that I couldn't cut through it or take a bite. Since I paid so much for it I also put it in the microwave for a bit to try and soften it enough to cut. It was still very hard, but I was able to cut pieces of it using a lot of force and a large bread knife. The inside was again very dense and not at all similar to "real bread" or other gluten free baguettes I've had which have aimed to be light and airy. It felt bad to throw away given the cost, and my family got through it one piece each over several different dinners - none of which were good. I've had Forest & Flour on my to-try Yelp list for a while, and I'm so glad I was close enough to give this place a go today! It's gluten free, dairy free, soy free, corn free, peanut free, and they don't use refined sugar - that's incredible for people with food restrictions! Forest & Flour is located in a small plaza, right at the corner! It's hard to miss and there's plenty of parking available. I came in the afternoon and was looking to pick up a quick bite, but decided to dine-in since it was surprisingly cozy and sooo cute inside! Hands down one of the cutest cafe I have seen in the Bay. While I was taking a look at the menu, one of the employees actually came around to greet me and asked if this was my first time here. I was super excited to try this place, and having her match my excitement was so funny, haha! I told her I was looking for a small meal and also wanted to try a pastry of theirs. She went to look at what was freshly baked (I assume they bake in small batches, so there's always fresh batches coming out). She introduced a couple pastry options, but what caught my eye was the Matcha Muffin. I don't usually go for toppings that look too sweet or gooey. I liked the white and black sesame seeds sprinkled on top of the Matcha Muffin, so I opted for one of those and a small bowl of Chicken Daikon Soup. She also offered to warm up my pastry and I appreciate that! Love the service here! I took a seat in the back and my order came pretty quickly, and omg, the soup smelled so good. The bowl came with some daikon, carrots, cabbage, sprouts, herbs, and other goodies. This bowl of Chicken Soup was fragrant, incredibly comforting and I thoroughly enjoyed it, haha! It also came with a slice of gluten free bread. The bread itself is a bit dense, but it soaks up the flavors of the soup well and in my opinion, you can't go wrong with dipping bread in a bowl of goodness! As for my Matcha Muffin, this was so delicious as well! This muffin was surprisingly light and fluffy. Mild on sweetness, but the taste of the Matcha comes through nicely! Super clean inside and great for studying or a coffee date Food: Matcha muffin- was incredibly crumbly which made it hard to eat but the matcha flavor did come through and it was enjoyable Kale Cesar- it was delicious but the portion was a little disappointing. For 12$ I was expecting more salad. I also didn't love that the toppings were packaged separately (although I get it) I thought it was unnecessary. The croutons were delicious and the lemon lavender loaf is something I have to come back for. I LOVE THIS PLACE!! Everything is gluten-free and dairy-free. It's a very quiet, hole in the wall place. The ladies who work here are so sweet and very passionate about the way they run their little café. This is in the same spot where Starbucks used to be, across from the Bank of America. I went in two times to try a flourless chocolate cupcake, a matcha latté (by default, there is oat milk), and today, I went into eat their GF/DF French toast. I indulged. It was so fluffy and the cream tasted like coconut. If you're a fan of thick French toast with eggs and whole milk, you will not be a fan of this... or really anything on the menu but if you are open to seeing what plant-based living is like, this is a great place to try! It was so worth the second trip. They often sell out of the French toast. I am so lucky they are right by my house. They have a customer for life. Loving the new addition to Fremont's Mission neighborhood! I personally don't have any allergies, but my lover (lol) is keto, and sometimes I am keto too when I want to engage in self-loathing and self-inflicted torture. We haven't tried their keto bread yet because we got a big shipment of Sola bread, but I am sure that once we run out, we will try out a loaf. Hopefully they will have more keto options at that time, hint hint! I actually stopped by their grand opening and tried their matcha muffin. My sister stopped by later that day and picked up a chocolate chip cookie. I passed by last week and tried more of their baked goods--their monkey bread and their pecan/chocolate chip cookie. I have to say that I feel little to no guilt when I eat their creations! Usually when I have sweets, I'm literally left with a bad taste in my mouth because I'm not too used to sugar. Their treats aren't so laden with sugar such that I get that feeling, which is good because their cookies are BOMB! Bomb.com who says that anymore oh well i'm old and i'm not ashamed to show it. I prefer the chocolate chip cookie to the pecan one that I tried recently, because it seemed fresher. My lover (lol) tried it, and he commented that the cookie tastes like Misfits, which is another bakery across the way on the Peninsula which we don't get to go too often anymore since we're poor and no longer live in Palo Alto. The matcha muffin is so subtle and pleasant. We personally were not fans of the monkey bread, but maybe for someone who has dietary restrictions, it would be good. What a cute addition to Fremont! This darling bakery/coffee shop caters to folks with food allergies/insensitivities. I saw locals filtering in ordering their "usual" or asking for whole stocks of an item "because its my daughter's favorite" so I was impressed. I got a (plant-based) milk tea latte and pumpkin muffin (just before a lady came and bought all the rest!!)-- they were just divine although my bill was $17 total. This place is nice but very pricey. My first visit here was great , I had Macha latte, which was nice . But I feel this place needs more coffee varieties. Lattes,cappuccinos etc. I just paid 7 bucks for a pour over(fancier name for a drip coffee) for which I clearly asked for a oat milk latte with maple vanilla syrup. I even asked the barista to make sure I asked for a latte not a pour over while she was making it and she said ya it will still have the latte feel but stronger. I didn't ask for a stronger coffee . The drink was so hot I couldn't even taste anything let alone for them to remake it. If you don't serve a latte then just say it but don't serve something else especially when this place is so expensive. It was like I paid 8 dollars for a drip coffee taste. Fremont definitely needs more cafes with good vibes like Forest & Flour, but it's still a miss. You know in the fashion industry there are brands that promote eco minded fabrics but lack directions and techniques in design and garment construction? Forest & Flour is like one of those brands. And although they brand themselves more as a bakery (according to their website, and they have a flour blend product), how many baked goods are there? You are not seeing a bakery like Mariposa, or a patisserie like Sweet Diplomacy, or a vegan cafe like RAW, or... You know here in the Bay Area we definitely can find diet specific restaurants and products, and nowadays startups are bringing those to our homes. F&F is like a bit of everything (and quite some PR work), and it's hard to see how F&F can be better than a more health minded household. I think they really need to focus. The other day I made myself some gluten free pancakes without refined sugar, with organic unsweetened cranberries and raw walnuts, and a cup of organic coffee with nut milk. And I was much happier eating my own simple cooking than F&F's baked goods packed with spice scent and sweet moisturization. Get good ingredients from Whole Foods and Good Eggs, and you can do better than F&F. My true feelings. read more

My cup hot chocolate was nearly perfect/tasted like a very flavorful Mexican hot chocolate or rosy hot chocolate. Fulfilling size. Cute cup! It definitely was strong in aroma and flavor. I don't usually say the same at most other places. It was a very good tasting carrot muffin, so fluffy, fresh, natural, moist and delicious. Soft pastries. Absolutely loved it. Next time, I'll try something pumpkin or with lemon ginger in it. I should come earlier for more options. I need to try a few more other items during next visits. Few customers were inside. Not crowded before closing hour on Sunday. Stress free environment. Green colors everywhere. Nice. Very well maintained and organized inside too. I am proud to give this place a good 5-stars rating. When you're at the Mountain Farmer's market, check out Forest & flour for their array of vegan and gluten free baked goods. I enjoy their vegan muffins: from chocolate with and without frosting, monkey bread, matcha, lemon strawberry, carrot, and also pumpkin. The sponge is soft and flavorful in each muffin. I've enjoyed it as breakfast or even as a dessert. They also have breads: sourdough, lemon lavendar that I've tried. Must be warmed in order to eat the bread soft. This is a beautiful café with a delightful and helpful staff. Any question the person working the front counter didn't know, they happily went and asked the cooks and others to find out. The food was delicious be it quite sweet. Their pour-over coffee was also excellent. The service was relatively slow. Having only been open a month, I can see them working out the kinks operation. I waited 10 minutes for coffee and a muffin and another several minutes for a French toast when I was the only kitchen order in at the time. There is a hidden 20% mandatory fee on all transactions. This "fee" is promoted under the guise of an alternative to tipping. Any fee applied to all transactions in all circumstances should be included in the price posted. It's disingenuous to lie about the actual cost when it's known upfront. read more

I am glad to support local business even if that means going beyond my comfort zone to try new things. I got a baguette at the Santana Row farmers market thinking that would be the 'typical French baguette' and I found a pretty massaged long piece of very heavy bread almost heavy as a rock. For $11 I thought: this better be good. And all I have to say it was the most delicious gluten free experience in my life. This bread is so good and last for days. First off, congratulations on opening! Fremont absolutely NEEDS places like this. Giving you 4 stars for now. Though I think there's room to grow, which is great! First, the good: -The chicken soup was good! A bit on the tangy side, but packed with wholesome, healthy ingredients. Even the Asian radish reminded me a bit of home cooked Asian food. -The chocolate cake (I forget the name) was great! I couldn't tell that it didn't have ingredients like butter and eggs. It was moist and not overly sweet. -The shining star of your store, for me, was the pour over coffee. Strong and flavorful. And definitely a fuller flavor than just about any Fremont cafes around. -Super cute place. Thoughtfully decorated, but layout UI/UX could use some help. Read below. OK, here's some constructive feedback for you. I really hope your store makes it! -For customers paying with credit card tap or Apple pay, give customers the option to tip. This is great for your workers and will help with retention and additional store revenue -Place a menu directly behind the register as well, instead of to the right. I understand you need some storage there, but it's a bit awkward for new customers coming in from the parking lot entrance to move to the right, then order, and then get in line. -Advertise your drinks more strongly! My wife really enjoyed the matcha. And I enjoyed the strong and full bodied flavor of your pour over coffee. We both felt the drinks were the stars. -Creamer/sweetener options for the coffee were not clear. I'd recommend taking advantage of normal user behavior, and having an oat milk creamer and accompanying sweetener and stirrers close by and obvious for customers. -My wife and I both wanted to like the brioche...and we understand that since it's gluten free and vegan friendly, it won't taste buttery. But we were hoping for something more flaky and airy. -We both thought it would make some sense to clear out some of the merchandise (tees) you have up front and instead repurpose some of that space to display some of your tasty pastries and other offerings. Boom!!!! I love this place - so hard to find food that is amazing and free of so many allergians! I had only been to their farmer's markets but since I was up in Fremont I decided to swing on by and check out the new store - ADORABLE!!! Sway and her team have done an incredible job making this space into such a cute, welcoming space that serves food that is both amazing in taste and amazing for your body - not an easy task to accomplish! What I have tried... Baguette - little too dense for me, the flavor is good but my jaws just have a tough time with it (I have arthritis in my jaw ) Brioche - soooo yummy, it's one of my fave breads, light and tasty Carrot Muffin - moist and tasty, not real carroty to me, but still an amazing muffin Matcha Muffin - the matcha flavor is not strong, but the moisture is and the muffin really hits the spot Mini Devil Chocolate Cake (with frosting!) - so delicious! I think this is a great place if you are vegan and have limited options. It's a really cute space and the baked goods look soo soo good. The service was good and they were patient to tell us about the menu options. Some of the offerings on menu were unavailable, even the drip coffee was out eventhough it was in the morning and didnt' seem crowded, so if you are here for a certain item, it's good to call ahead to make sure they have it. The taste is really not for me, I came here with a couple friends, we all ordered different items so we could all try. We had the devil chocolate muffin, monkey party, matcha latte muffin, and lavendar lemon bread. Unfortunately I didn't like any of it. The monkey party was the better option out of what we ordered but still a little too gooey for me, matcha didn't have much matcha flavor, chocolate really lacked sugar, and bread was very dense and heavy. I can see how if you are vegan, or have food allergies this is a really nice option. i spent $6 + tax on my chocolate muffin, and i was automatically charged a 20% staff wellness fee for eating in.
