I am giving one star for the ambiance and look of the restaurant which apparently must be much more important than the taste of the food. There were so many great reviews we didn't hesitate to give the place a try and we went to Polite Provisions and saw that you can sit order from Fortunate Son and eat at the bar. A match made in heaven considering the two places with so many amazing reviews. Honestly I have never had such bad Chinese food. We ordered fried rice, Dan Dan noodles, beef and broccoli, dumplings and egg rolls. Fried rice was not fried and in fact it was not cooked. It had a bunch of things thrown in there including some kind of sausage but it was uncooked white rice (how can you mess up fried rice). The Dan Dan noodles were not spicy but they were over cooked and mushy. The only flavor they tasted was peanut butter. The beef and broccoli was super salty and there was very little meat. The dumplings were passable but nothing memorable. The egg rolls had a very thick coating and they were very small but edible. All in all we would never return and I am very confused at the huge waits and fantastic reviews. It could be there is nothing good to compare to but one thing I know and that is sub par food and this fits the bill!! read more

I would have given it a higher rating except they seem to chronically be out of the shrimp + pork dumplings, which, I understand, are a main attraction. Also, as seems to be the case with *many* restaurants post-pandemic, they are focusing too much on the take-out crowd, neglecting their dine-in guests. read more

Probably the worst Chinese food in San Diego. First of all it's American Chinese food which is fine but the most bland, non authentic and poor Americanized food ever. It's also overpriced. Ambiance is cool but food is terrible. Tourist trap. Better off at pick up sticks, seriously. Any place off convoy is better. read more

Interior is amazing. Nice Ambiance. Dark but it sets the mood. (They had fake candles) Made reservations through opentable so I didn't have to wait but there was a decent line outside on a Wednesday night. Food was pretty good but might be because of the company. Got the Beef Chow fun, Walnut Shrimp, and the Green Beans. Beef Chow fun, the best part was the beef. Very tender. Green beans were not bad but weren't my favorite. Overall a good experience. Would try again. read more

Like a 3.5 stars. Its a hit or miss, but mostly miss recently. I've been here 3 times and quality control is off. First time, in December food was DELICIOUS. Last 2 times, the chicken in Kung Pao Chicken had zero flavor and overall just not satisfying. Wing flavor are a very acquired taste. Would not recommend. read more

This place is all decor and no flavor. Chicken was partially raw, soup served cold and the dishes were all drenched in the same sauce. None of the entrees stood out. If you want good home style Chinese food I suggest you head up to LA to Woon. That place does it RIGHT. read more

1 star for ambience. Come on CH, there are like 10 menu options so there is no reason for not nailing EVERY food item. Good thing I got takeout because there is no way in hell I would wait an hour + for this cuisine. I recommend PF Chang's over overrated blasé Chinese Food. That's all I've got to say. Get your IG pics and GTFO. read more

So here is my review on FS: pick-up First I think the food must have been ready before they notified me because the egg rolls and cauliflower, which were fried, were soggy Egg rolls (veggie) were not the ones in their picture... the wrapper was not the same, did not like the filling. They get a Cauliflower was over cooked and needed a crunch of some sort, flavor was ok. I got the beef Dan Dan noodles. Surprisingly Husband liked the dish, flavor good, lwas , but I did not like the noodles at all they were really gluey , if that's a word?. The beef is so ground and overcooked that it was barely there...... also lacked texture. maybe that is how it's supposed to be?. REALLY impressed by Fortunate Son! Everything was amazing. We got take out because they didn't have reservations but were so impressed by everything even after getting it home and plating it ourselves. The fried rice has phenomenal flavor and is so awesome- the shrimp was perfectly cooked and the flavor of everything was spot on. The dumplings were so savory and the chili crisp was perfection- I also dipped my egg rolls in it as well. Egg rolls were like lumpia and so tasty, and the General Tso's chicken was really flavorful with the best sauce I've probably had in San Diego. The only thing I'd add is a plum sauce to the menu but the chili crisp was a worthy substitution. Other than that, SO GOOD. read more

Great service, even better food. Been wanting to eat here for ages. It's connected to the polite provisions speakeasy bar. Ordered the green beans, crab rangoons, orange chicken, and a couple Tsingtao beers. Very tasty, and pretty affordable pricing. Served family style. Definitely recommend! read more

Sadly saw the cute restaurant only from outside. It was a 2hour and half wait on a Wednesday evening. They should have a better reservation system. Not only walk ins. The restaurant is next to our fave Asian drink place called Yun Tea, it's next to Olleh KBBQ, next door to Szechuan Chef, and a short walk to BB.Q Chicken. This is a popular strip mall, so it could be challenging for you to find parking. Parking is free for 90 minutes, but you'll have to pay after that time ends. I actually meant to start with the wings, but the eggplant was so good I ended up eating half of it before even getting to them. By that point I was already getting full, but I still made sure to finish the wings--and I'm honestly excited to take the rest of the eggplant home as leftovers. By the time I got to the wings, I understood why they're popular--crispy, flavorful, and super satisfying--but what stood out to me was how both dishes complemented each other. One rich and layered, the other crisp and bright. I never got tired of eating, which honestly says a lot. I even told the staff how much I enjoyed the food and they thought I was joking, but I meant every word in saying I thought it was comparable, if not better then the food I've had in Chinatown in LA. Those meals can easily serve a dozen people in my opinion which makes them even more of a great deal. If you've got a large party, this is a fantastic option to make sure everyone eats their fill. With that said, all the food was delicious. Hot and fresh from the kitchen, each dish with its own unique flavor and textures. We ran the gamut of flavors over our meal and it's hard to really point to one singular dish that was my favorite. After having almost 10 different dishes, I can confidently say that they will have something you will really enjoy. The restaurant itself is a bit no frills. But that's fine. They're putting their time in to food, not ambiance and I am totally down with that. Service is great. We were in a back corner, but we never felt ignored nor overly watched over. We were able to sit down and enjoy our meal at our own speed. My only 'gripe' with the restaurant is that the restroom is actually outside and shared with the other businesses in the complex. And that bathroom isn't the best maintained. I'm assuming that's up to the property management and not the restaurant (or other businesses) so I'm not dinging my review, but just keep that in mind. Might be best to try & hold it if you can. Ultimately, Golden Chopsticks really knocked it out of the park and caught me so off guard. I am so glad we came here on a bit of a whim. It was fantastic and I can't wait to go back.

When I point out none of this is advertised anywhere, I'm informed it's on Open Table, and that we should've seen it there, and were dismissed. They said they could give us another restaurant recommendation and then proceeded to just dismiss us without even that courtesy. We go back to verify this age limit, and it's there... one TINY line 2 scrolls down on the page, WAY beyond any of the information needed to just book a table, which is the only thing Open Table is used for. Complete waste of time for a poorly advertised bar with zero helpful staff on a dumpy street by the airport.

I don't frequent San Diego, so this was a special occasion for me. I was excited that they were able to accommodate my 8:30 p.m. reservation. In fact, it meant so much to me that I even canceled our sunset cruise so we could enjoy dinner there. We arrived on time and were immediately impressed by the beautiful ambiance. I asked one of the hostesses if it would be possible to be seated on the rooftop because of the beautiful lights everyone raves about. She told me there was a waitlist but promised she would continue checking since it was my birthday. Unfortunately, that's where the experience began to decline. Our waitress greeted us initially, but as the evening went on, we noticed we were receiving very little attention. She only had three tables, all within our view, yet she consistently attended to the other two parties while we were largely ignored. After we finished eating, we sat for over 30 minutes without anyone checking on us or acknowledging that we were ready for our check. To make matters worse, a photographer came through our section taking photos of every table except ours. While that may have been unintentional, combined with everything else that happened, it added to the feeling that we simply didn't matter. Eventually, we asked a concierge to locate our waitress so we could get our check. Fifteen minutes passed, and still no one came. I finally got up myself and walked to the hostess stand to ask for assistance. Only then did a manager come over. I explained how disappointed I was with the service. She apologized and offered complimentary desserts and cocktails, but at that point I had no desire to extend my stay. The issue was never about free food or drinks, it was about how unwelcome we had been made to feel. As a Black woman, that feeling is heartbreaking because you never want to wonder whether you're being treated differently. I can't say with certainty what motivated the treatment we received, but the consistent lack of attention, being overlooked while others around us were served, and how invisible we felt left me questioning whether we truly belonged there. The manager ultimately comped our entire meal, and while I appreciated her taking responsibility financially, no amount of money could erase what should have been a joyful birthday memory. The waitress never returned to our table after the manager became involved. As we left, several staff members stood at the host stand watching us. The manager had promised to bring me her business card but never did. Instead, she simply watched us walk out. I had anticipated an unforgettable birthday dinner for all the right reasons. Instead, it became unforgettable for all the wrong ones. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Born & Raised. Every guest should feel welcomed, valued, and treated with the same level of care and respect. Unfortunately, that was not the experience I had on what was supposed to be a very special night.

Today, we made our grand entrance into this joint they call Fortunate Son, and let me tell ya, the ambiance was off the charts. It deserved nothin' less than a solid five-star rating. But, I gotta spill the beans, our first encounter with the wise guy who greeted us left a lot to be desired. Instead of givin' us a warm welcome, this guy had the nerve to tell us they ain't open yet and demanded we scram and come back in 15 minutes. Can you believe that? Not the kinda first impression you'd expect, am I right? Now, let's talk about the grub. Holy cannoli, it was a real firecracker! The food was spicier than a jalapeño on steroids, and to make matters worse, it was a bit overcooked. But, thank our lucky stars, our waitress was a real gem. She had a heart of gold and swiftly took that overcooked and spicy orange chicken off our bill. Gotta give credit where it's due! But here's the thing, the rest of the meal was just fuhgeddaboudit. Nothin' to write home about, if you catch my drift. And that's why our crew unanimously decided that this will be a one-and-done experience. Capisce? Oh, and one more thing, this joint fills up faster than a rat scurries away from a sinking ship. It's a tight squeeze, ya know? They oughta expand their seating capacity to accommodate more wise guys comfortably. And hey, while we're at it, it would be a real nice touch to see more items on the menu that don't require a heavy hand with the spices. How 'bout some sweet-and-sour chicken, sweet-and-sour pork, and other dishes that cater to different tastes? Fortunate Son has truly earned its place as one of our go-to spots. The customer service here is on point - they make you feel like a lucky guest from the get-go. If i could rate lower than 1 star I WOULD. This place is unaccomadating TO THE MAX. So many times ive tried to dine in they have refused service to me and my family even though we have never dined before. The staff is so rude and doesnt explain their waitlist at all. The host for tonight 07/18 is so rude and condescending as FUCK, apparently his name is Josh. Coming from someone that has worked in the restaurant industry this is unacceptable but not surprised since this place is so entitled! They said they dont take reservations but then they have reservations lined up? They continuously sat smaller parties of 2 skipping through the waitlist. I asked if they had a plan for our party (party of 5) and the party of 2 that JUST SAT that apparently had a reservation, sat at an unreasonably large table when they had many open tables of 2 available?? Couldnt give us an accurate wait time at all and said we had to wait for them to finish to dine in. Josh also said we wouldnt have finished in 40 min but how would he know what we would have ordered? There were many empty tables. So upsetting! The food industry is not hard and kindness is free. I guess ill never be able to dine in because every single encounter with staff has been so rude. read more

I recently visited Fortunate Son Chinese Restaurant after it was recommended to me, and I was really excited to try it out. The place is absolutely beautiful--cute, cozy, and with a lovely ambiance that immediately caught my attention. I had high hopes for the food, especially given how nice the atmosphere was. The waiter, a young gentleman, was very kind and attentive, which I appreciated. However, when my food arrived, I was immediately disappointed by the cheap-looking plates. For such a pretty restaurant, the plates were a dollar store cheap. As for the food, it was a letdown. The baked beans, which the waiter recommended, were burnt and extremely salty. The honey walnut shrimp was okay, but definitely not the best I've had--just average. To top it off, I ordered a wonton, and it never even made it to my table. I could see the staff working hard, but based on my experience, this isn't the best spot to get your chineese food cravings satisfied. I recently visited Fortunate Son in Normal Heights, and I have mixed feelings about my experience. The interior is undeniably beautiful--stylish and inviting, it's definitely a place that catches your eye. However, the food didn't quite live up to the hype for me. We brought our 13-month-old daughter along, and the small tables made it super difficult to eat because there was literally no room to fit all the plates. We ordered four plates, and instead of spacing them out, the staff just stacked them on top of each other. This was not only impractical but also dangerous, as our daughter nearly grabbed a few plates and almost dropped them to the floor. I've heard horror stories about people waiting over an hour to get seated here. I can see why--because the ambiance is fantastic--but if you're looking for top-quality food, you might want to explore other options. Overall, I wish Fortunate Son the best of luck. With some improvements in service and food quality, they could become a top spot in the area. read more

I recently visited this restaurant with my sister and husband. We didn't have a reservation and arrived around 9:45 PM. Despite the late hour, we only waited about 15 minutes before being seated outside since the indoor dining area was fully booked. The interior of the restaurant is absolutely stunning--something I noticed when I stepped inside to use the restroom. I'll definitely plan ahead next time to enjoy the ambiance inside. Though a few items on the menu were sold out, we ordered the Hot n Sour Soup, General Tso's Chicken, and Orange Chicken. The food is served family style, and the portions were generous--perfect for sharing. Every dish was flavorful, fresh, and absolutely delicious. Overall, the experience was wonderful, and I'd highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. I had a really great experience here. Gillian was my server and she consistently checked on my table to make sure I was doing okay. She was attentive without being overbearing, which I really appreciated. The food was delicious. I could definitely taste the ginger in the orange chicken, and it had the perfect crunch. The fried rice was amazing -- I honestly couldn't get enough of it. The lo mein was just as good. I would absolutely come back just for the fried rice alone. I came in with a sore throat, and the broth from the wonton soup really helped me swallow more comfortably. That was such a nice surprise. From where I was sitting, I could see part of the kitchen and everything looked clean. The fridge looked neat and organized, which says a lot. Certified Consortium Holdings fanboy here. These folks really know how to provide a one-of-a-kind hospitality experience. I've been to Fortunate Son several times and it's always a treat that is sure to wow guests. The ambience is spectacular. Feels like you're part of a movie scene. There is almost always a long wait, but if you're not in a rush, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. The food comes hot and fast. Love the shrimp cilantro dumplings, General Tso's Chicken, among other items... Fair pricing, quick and friendly service, lovely ambiance. My 2 cents for the perfect date/dinner: Come here midweek right before dinner rush for a shorter wait time, put your name on the list and go next door to the very hip Polite Provisions (also CH venue) for a drink (or two). Chinese food? Sorry but this place is just a dine-in Panda Express. The service was okay and the interior was great. I went here looking or some authentic Chinese food. Problem is, the food was definitely not Chinese. Every thing was tasteless yet very salty. First of all, the noodles tasted like spaghetti with some chili oil. (Still no spicy) The chicken and beef were VERY salty. So salty that you have to eat it with rice and sip water after every bite. But there's another problem. I don't even know how it's possible but the rice was also messed up. It was dry, hard, and not fluffy at all. It's unfortunate that I had to leave such a bad review since my server was very nice but the food was just awful. I should've known the food wasn't authentic when I noticed that all the staff members were white, including the chef. read more

Hiya, I stopped by tonight to place and pick up my order between 6pm ish-6:15pm.... I ordered Szechuan chicken wings and Honey walnut shrimp. It is Sept.5/Thursday. .. Both were very Salty. I couldn't eat it. They also Lacked Flavor and taste. I've ordered this dish before and loved it. But, Both just tasted like Salt. 1 shrimp had all the sugar and everything else was salty. The chicken wings didn't have the Szechuan taste and just tasted like salt and pepper chicken. I would Like a Refund, please. I also left a Review in the past about Szech. chicken wings. I had a very disappointing experience here today. After being seated, we waited about 30 minutes without anyone coming to take our order or even acknowledge us. When I finally tried to politely get the server's attention and said we were ready to order, his response was extremely unprofessional. He said, "what's up dude, what you want," in a disrespectful tone. When I tried to explain that we had been waiting for a long time, he completely ignored me and walked away. This level of service is unacceptable. It's not just about the wait it's about basic respect and professionalism, which were clearly missing. Unfortunately, I ended up leaving without ordering. I have no complaints about the service and the decorations are cute. However, the second I heard the music playing in the restaurant and the all white staff (including the chefs), I immediately realized that the food would not be authentic at all (this is coming from an Asian person). As soon as I tasted the food, I knew I was correct because it is definitely catered to white people's tastes. I could not finish the food to save my life because even the rice was too hard and dry, and how do you mess up rice??? This place is basically a glorified Panda Express. I would honestly not recommend unless you're just going to look at the decorations and/or take pictures. read more

Hello, I ordered my food last night around 9:30pm -10pm. and, my chicken wings were over cooked that it was hard to bite into and tasted like rubber. I'm hoping for a refund. Food is good but they don't give you rice with your entre. I have ordered a lot of Chinese/ Asian food in my life and they always give you rice. I ordered on the phone and the lady didn't mention it. Whomever made this decision is pretty dumb. Ruined my dinner to get home and have no rice! oh also the container was only filled up to 75% full.
