Amazing food and even better customer service. The young lady helping us that evening gave us some suggestions and we took them and everything was delish! Took a bit to prepare food, but was worth it as food was as super fresh when we got home and the quality was top tier. I've eaten at the restaurant as well, and the customer service and food was equally amazing, also makes for some great Insta photos since the decor inside is super cute. Fortunate Son caught my attention because of the cool looking interior. However, after eating there, I am certain I won't be returning. To my surprise, they had one of the smallest menus I've ever seen at a restaurant. I ordered the honey walnut shrimp, egg drop soup, beef & broccoli, and the noodles. The soup was extremely salty, and the beef & broccoli and noodles were both drowning in sauce. However the honey walnut shrimp was delicious! They also make you pay separately for white rice. I've come here on multiple occasions and the wait is just unbearable. The hostess was doing everything under the sun but actually tending to the people in line. Parking of course is horrible. My last attempt was a Monday and 30 minutes after they opened and it was still a long wait..and take out was just as long. Guess it's not meant to try the food. I had actually heard mediocre things about this restaurant. It looks very trendy on the outside and was replaced by actually a very good meatball place (Soda & Swine). Honestly I had a totally different experience. I thought it was amazing. The inside is BEAUTIFUL and the food is great. I loved the honey walnut shrimp and didn't mind that the walnuts were crushed. I found it to be a different take on the traditional and the shrimp were HUGE and juicy with a huge crunch. The Dan Dan noodles were also perfect with a ground beef that was superb and flavorful. The the green beans were also very charbroiled tasty. The hot and sour soup was just ok. I wouldn't order it again. Updating my previous review. The first time I ate at Fortunate Son, the food was delicious and great quality. The next two times, it's been lacking in quality and totally different than it used to be. The shrimp is smaller and fishy tasting, it's completely over salted (literally started burning my tongue from all the salt and I started getting flushed and heart palpitations!), and actually upset both mine and my partner's stomachs. We were disappointed that the food was clearly not as good anymore, quality is being sacrificed for sure. They took a table a head of us an then the manager aggressively approached us without hearing our side and Told to go elsewhere. Food was delicious! The crispy eggplant might be one of the best things I've ever had. The noodles and eggrolls were decent but they don't have hot mustard. The crispy tofu was a new experience and def mouth numbing as the description says! Ambiance was super cute and fun but there were TONS of flies and no AC so it was pretty hot. Fortunate son is a must try restaurant for all San Diego food lovers. The ambience is so beautiful and trendy. The courses are family size and very affordable. I would recommend the Wong tongs and dumplings! The only downside to eating here is that the wait time is typically about two hours to be seated and the restaurant itself is quite small. Tried this place for the first time last night and it exceeded my expectations by a lot. We did have to wait an hour, so be prepared, but it's a small restaurant so it makes sense. Our server Jameson was amazing, super friendly, and very attentive. We ordered the DanDan noodles, Crab Rangoon, Egg drop soup, and salt&pepper shrimp. Everything was delicious, and the portions were extremely generous considering each dish was only $10-15. The ambience is one of the most insane i've experienced in San Diego, with attention to detail in every corner of the restaurant. I expected less than stellar performance by the chef being that FS seems like a huge tourist trap, but like CH expectations, the decoration was exceptional and the food was delicious. Our favorite of the night was the honey shrimp. The batter was light and airy and the shrimp was plump and juicy. Prices are honestly on par with mom and pop Chinese establishments nowadays like Royal Mandarin and Golden Chopsticks. They did not skimp on the shrimp for the shrimp lo Mien. Orange chicken was crispy but could use more orange flavor. My only gripe is white rice should be included with the entrees to be on par with other restaurants as $1.99 for a bowl of white rice is ridiculous to me. Reservations are a must as it's easily a 2-hr wait on the weekends. I prefer to support mom and pop businesses but I definitely look forward to bringing friends or out-of-towners here! read more

I LOVED the decor. But the service lacked. We were sat right next to the door where they were preparing all of the bags. they seem to be more focused on their takeout window than the Guest seated inside. Another thing is the restaurant is attached to polite provisions so the bathroom situation is a joke. When we asked to take our leftovers, they brought the togo boxes to the table for us to load ourselves. It got quite messy. I added red pepper flakes because by itself its kind of boring (but I just love spicy food). With just the shrimp lo mein I would've given a 4. My bf was not a fan of his order. The chow fun had no seasoning. The sauce was non existent. I know there is a bad review saying this but we were like maybe it's not that bad. Believe us it's that dry. He rated his food 3 because he really enjoyed the meat. Average out or score it's 3.5. The meal was around $30 and for the amount of tasty protein provided it's priced really well. By the time we left, NO ONE we came in with was still there. In ONE ENTIRE HOUR all we got was our cauliflower. The waitress was CONSTANTLY avoiding us. I had to embarrassingly raise and wave my hand for ANY attention. She would literally check in on EVERY.SINGLE.TABLE around us. Even going as far as walking around the entire seating area to not walk by us. I had to ask constantly for our food and it still didn't arrive. "I'll have them rush it right now!" Lies. Multiple noodle dishes came out and none ours. I don't want to say it was because I was the only Mexican there or that we were the only ones without our phones out instagramming but we were definitely not their ideal customers for SOME reason. I wasn't rude until the end when I had enough. It shouldn't be like this but wow. I hate this place. I really do. The ambiance and decor is really cute at Fortunate Son. The food on the other hand is just ok. It's not authentic Chinese food at all, even less so than your average Chinese American takeout joint. The best way I can describe it is if you were to try to make your own Chinese food at home but it just doesn't really taste like the real thing. It's not bad it's just not really Chinese Food. The dishes are a bit bland like they left out some key ingredients, and they lack the traditional flavors. I grew up in NYC and frequented the authentic spots in Chinatown so I am familiar with authentic Chinese food, as well as each regional cuisine.
