Brought my 5 yr old son here for chilli cheese fries and a twister for his first visit. They brought out the ice cream out first and then hands us a grilled cheese. First off, I didn't even know they served a grilled cheese. Second, they made no attempt to fix it as it was the first time bringing my son here. Been coming here 20+ years, not ever coming back since they displayed the inability to fix such a small mistkae on their part. Lost a family of long time customers. Shame on them. I would of purchased the chili cheese fries, but the way they just said, you ordered the grilled cheese and walked away. Smh, not once in my life have I ordered a grille cheese until I was forced to take it. My 5 yr old son left disappointed so that gave me a bad taste On top of that, I have never sat inside so I wanted to provide the full experience for my son on his first visit so I decided to make it a sitdown. I was happy to find a drive-in with ice cream while visiting Milpitas. I got the root beer float, while my girlfriend got cookie dough ice cream. There was SO MUCH cookie dough! It was awesome. Wish they mixed it a little bit better though (there was a lot of cookie dough chunks on top, a decent amount in the middle, and the bottom had no cookie dough at all). Instead of going with my usual swirl come, I felt daring on Saturday and had a chocolate dipped cone! I'm a girl that will try anywhere once, and while daring with food, I will always ALWAYS have a usual that takes #1 in my heart. After being a long time customer , my usual was anywhere from a soft serve cone in any of the three flavors, or the Worms n' Dirt Twister. But fear robs the public of honest and interesting experiences - and Yelp reviews too! After reading the commentary on the chocolate dipped cone, I had to take a risk and give it a swirl for myself (pun intended). The parking lot was nearly full with three extra spots, but keep in mind it was during the dinner rush hour, AND on a weekend. Within ten minutes of parking with my mom, I'm then devouring on the best dipped cone since the McDonald's version a la 2008! The first dipped cone I had was from McDonald's and I had two in that same day- but it was since discontinued. One of the coolest parts about the cone is it tastes like too goodness in a Klondike, with no sticky chocolate fingers- super clean finish! It's so mess free, it'll make even the strictest parent let their kids eat in the car, or even the clumsiest person be stain free and satisfied. A small family business. I come here alot for their "Polish Sandwich" and ice cream =) Very casual, good for a quick bite. The young lady works there (may be the owner's daughter), very nice with a friendly smile all the time. The older couple is always busy preparing food. The young man works there, my opinion - either superstingy or just a "dumb ass". Out of all the times I've dined here, not one bad experience until today. I'm always patient and usually reasonable - even today when I'm 8 months pregnant, hehe... I was craving for ice cream today so I decided to stop by and get myself a small chocolate dipped ice cream. I ordered the ice cream from this young man that works there (may be the owner's son). I sat in my car, ate the whole thing and went back inside to order two more ice cream to go for my coworkers. I said to the guy "I would like two small orders of ice cream in cups to go please, one with strawberry topping and whipped cream". He went to the back and came back a minute or so later with two small ice cream in two small cups, each with a spoon in it. So I said to the guy, "I'm taking them to go, do you have a lid for them?" He came back with two soda cup lids and said to me "here, you might have to push your ice cream down to seal the cup", so I looked at him and said ok. Then he added "next time ask for a to go cup for the ice cream", and he pointed at a cup that's taller than the one he used with these ice cream. I was fine about crushing the toppings of the sundae if he didn't add that last remark. I figure no big deal if that's the only type of lid they have and I was just gonna deal with it.... but when he said "next time ask for a to go cup..."??? my patience with stupidity reached the top. What a dumb ass! First thing I said to him was "I would like two small orders of ice cream in cups to go please" that he didn't understand - perhaps I need a to go cup for these ice cream. Hello??? Let's just assume he's not bright enough to relate, how about "would you like me to put these in a different cup for you?" OMG, how much is a freaking to go cup worth? And how much is a small order of freaking homemade ice cream worth? Superstingy!!! My overall experience with the food is good. Service is good except with this superstingy guy today. Wow, I can't believe I didn't try this place sooner! Shakes, Ice cream, burgers, and corn dogs galore!! I wanted a light snack so I got the huge corn dog and a dipped waffle cone. I also tried my boyfriend's 50/50 cone. The corn dog batter was to fried to a crisp perfection, not too thick, or undercooked. I think it was a 1.69 for the corn dog?? But either way it was worth it since it was bigger than I expected! Especially when comparing to a $5 one at "Hot dog on a Stick" or any other place. Personally I think the dipped waffle cone rocked compared to the regular dipped cone and the 50/50 cone. I like the regular plain vanilla ice cream since it's more rich and sweet. Yeah, this is the place that Sonic can only hope to be. Its old - Check. Its dingy - Check. Look at the old water fountain in front. How many mouths lapped a drink out of that spout?! Probably worth some dough so call the guys on American Pickers. This is old school fast food. Unlike the modern cousins, say Ronald, the King or that place outside the bun. At Foster's Freeze, they actually COOK the food. You know what I mean. If you've ordered at any fast food joint, you hear all kinds of beeps, blips and buzzers coming out of the kitchen. Not at Foster's Freeze. All you hear is the hiss and sizzle of cooking burgers and fries. Cooking meaning not being warmed up. Combo meals are the way to go so I get an Old Fashion and swap out the drink for a root beer float. A few minute later, I get a nicely topped float along with a warm paper bag. The best part...grease stains. You know the burger and fries are going to be good when the grease circles appear on the bag. The fries are great right off the bat. They're the old school krinkle kind. Maybe a bit more salt or a little longer in the fryer to crisp them up. My bad for not getting ketchup. That's what them krinkles are for. Now you know its a proper burger when its pedestrian. What I mean its that its something that its not. Its not trying to be upscale or gourmet so forget about kobe beef, artisnal buns or micro cut baby greens. Just a carefully warmed mass produced bun surrounding an indifferent puck of beef along with iceberg, tomato and sauce. All sealed together with a slice of melted cheddar or American. My float? Fountain root beer with vanilla ice cream. Cold. Frosty. Delicious. So there you have it. If you're not above getting food from a stand that looks like a garbage bin behind some business, then hold your breath and make your way to Milpitas. Weinerschnitzel is way better. Pastrami sandwich was subpar. The onion rings were good but could use a little more flavor. Service was bad. Two people working and not busy. Waited about 20-30 mins for food. Paid 2 dollars for a regular sized hotdog. Came with ketchup, mustard, and bad relish. Costco has better dogs too. I forget what I ordered the time before but I felt bad afterwards. I wish Fosters Freeze was great again. Maybe other locations are better. read more

I'd been wanting to see what the fuss was all about with this quaint "old fashioned" American fast food restaurant that's renowned for their ice cream. My boyfriend and I visited at around 2:30 to get their soft serve and pineapple Twister and it lived up to the name. I'd been craving chili cheese fries for months and the pictures made it look unappealing because of the size, the lack of cheese, and the fries looked uncooked. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the container to see a box full of amazing looking hot chili cheese fries. The fries were very well cooked, crispy and soft at the same time and slathered in a generous helping of chili and cheese. The pineapple Twister was a little sweet but the soft serve was perfect. It was huge and the chocolate dip was perfect--it wasn't so hard that the whole thing would completely collapse the minute you bit into it (cough*mcdonalds*cough) but it wasn't so soft that it barely kept the ice cream together. The atmosphere is very old fashioned: their signature logo, old timey cafeteria, parking lot--everything was perfect to fit the food. The Asian staff is very kind and accommodating. This place was definitely intended for shorter stays because the benches are pretty uncomfortable after a while. Other than that, it's a great place for an ice cream date or some bomb chili cheese fries. Highly recommended! read more

Wow, seriously can't believe I haven't reviewed this place! I've had soooooooo many memories here. Back in the days, my friends and I would teach Sunday School at the church next door... after our classes, we'd walk over to Foster's Freeze and grab some lunch. My all time fave: grilled cheese, fries, and a chocolate shake. If I was feeling exceptionally fatty, I'd grab a twister instead of a chocolate shake. It would always be amazingly oily, fatty, and SCRUMPTIOUS. I went here last week with my mom and I'd have to say, it definitely brought the nostalgia back. My grilled cheese and fries were as awesome as ever. My snickers twister was amazingggggggg. I'm glad that there is still a place in Milpitas that can bring back such wonderful memories of my childhood. read more

Owner: 5 stars. He bought the place 3 yrs ago, (I wish I would have come here sooner!) He tested different sauces for the burger and went with what the people liked best! I've seen how well he manages his employees, and how great he is to his customers. Food: 4 to 5 stars. The fries? OMG! the burgers? Better than In&Out! The ice creams etc, Off the charts! We ordered last night just before closing (our oops) and I don't suggest you do it either because the burgers were just ok, they needed much more sauce, pickles and tomatoes not to mention the cheese was barely there. Maybe the owner wasn't there? Anyway that's the only time the burgers weren't up to standard. We try not to come here very often, but man-o-man talk about fat & happy when we do? YUMMMMMMMMY! i ordered the crispy chicken sandwich combo. I was amazed the fries were tasty, hot and crispy with every bite. Ice cream cone-SUPER GOOD... because the texture, taste, and the cone all seem to get a perfect 10 on my taste, look, and texture standards. On a very hot day the ice cream didn't even get a chance to melt and run down to the wrapper/hands. The person who took the order was nice, friendly and took my order down very well. I usually have to repeat to the non-english speakers. So to have someone who can get it seems like a nice change for once. I guess if I can I'll come here again for lunch this week. This place is great! I never knew there was a foster's freeze in the milpitas area! I came here with a friend and we were both surprised at the selection this place had. So much food to choose from! We stood in front of the menu just wondering what to eat. Chili dogs? Cheeseburgers?! Ice-cream sundaes??!! I ended up getting a 1/4 lb with cheese, a med soda, and a cherry sundae. The burger was pretty good, and the sundae was just what I wanted... It really soothed my yearning for a cold and sweet dessert. The service was good; it didn't take too long for service and the people there were very nice. Being from Texas, there are a few places that I miss, that are either scarce or non-existent here in Cali. Dairy Queen and Sonic are two of them. They're so far apart here that they might as well be non-existent. But I've found my fix for both in Foster's Freeze. I won't hype the burger. It's ok. Just like Sonic, I go for the ice cream product, and the burger sometimes get included in my order because ice cream alone can't fill me. But I can't remove a whole star. The Twist (any flavor) satisfies my cravings for DQ's Blizzard. The shakes satisfy my cravings for a Sonic's shake. And the fries... well the fries, I'll take over anyone's fries. And the root beer float? Ok, maybe, I should've written this review from the parking lot. Somehow, I've become a regular though I live nowhere near the Milpitas location. I'm drawn to it when I'm in the area. Note: Watch out for the poles when you leave! Sounds like a dumb thing to say, but for some reason, way too many drivers back their vehicles into the poles that support the carport, the same carport that they park under when they arrived. I suggested posting a sign that reads "Please hit the pole." Maybe that will reduce the number of vehicles running into them. Move over Sonic...A classic, hidden gem in Milpitas has emerged and made me forget about you. Foster Freeze will remind you of the diners of yesteryear. Don't be intimidated by the old building situated next to a Precision Auto Care. You park, order at the window, and eat in your car (there's also a small eating area inside). They quite possibly have the best shakes in the South Bay. I have tried the strawberry and peach shakes and you can taste real fruit. Paired with their soft serve ice cream, their shakes are in instant buy. The root beer floats are comparable to those from A&W. The sundaes are truly awesome as well. In addition to their desserts, the food also deserves credit. I love their chili dog and chili cheese fries (they use crinkle fries). The chili recipe tastes homemade and is not too salty. The onion rings are very crispy and not oily. Based on these other reviews, I want to try the fried zucchini. I like the service here - friendly and quick. With an extensive menu, it may take some time to figure out what you want because everything looks good. I will definitely be back, and I truly hope they remain in business for years to come. I love going to Foster's Freeze as a rule. I have memories of getting shakes at the one on the 5 between the bay area and LA as a kid. Granted, I never thought the shakes were very good, but I always looked forward to it. I haven't eaten anything here except ice cream cones, so I can't speak to the quality of the cooked food. What I do know, is they are quick and make a nicely swirled cone. They are also one of the most polite fast food places I have been to in years. It's also ice milk, which means that it's lower in calories than most ice cream. If this is your worry, just don't eat ice cream really, but I jones for a soft serve now and again, and this is my favorite one to get it at. read more

Reminiscent of the diners of the 50's, Foster's serves hamburgers, fries, shakes, and chocolate-dipped ice cream cones. The chocolate coating is pretty tasty, and goes well with the soft ice cream.
