This was my first time at the restaurant. Both my daughter and I ordered crawfish. It was served in early March. The large crawfish were placed on top, with the smaller ones underneath. About 20% of the crawfish were inedible; they were either saturated with water or fell apart when peeled. The crawfish were very mild and not spicy at all. My daughter happened to like them that way, but I did not. However, we both agreed that we would not return to this restaurant to get crawfish again. We cannot comment on the quality of the other food, but the service was terrible. We ran out of napkins, and none were brought to us. There were no drink refills either. Our table was covered with crawfish husks that needed to be cleared. The place was busy, which might explain the service, but it does not excuse it. read more

I have lived in the New Orleans area for 40 years of my life and yet it took me until now to make my way to Frankie and Johnny's. I can tell you that I doubt it takes me more than 40 days to make my 2nd trip. I love this place! They also have a full bar. I ordered a Ferdi (half ham, half roast beef) and a cup of gumbo. The chicken and sausage gumbo was delicious! The roux was dark, the seasoning was perfect and the temperature was piping hot. The Ferdi was equally delish. The bread came out crisp as it was put in the oven for the cheese to melt. Perfect. Hot and delicious food, served with a smile. For the first time ever, I had fried green bell peppers! Did you know this was a thing??? I didn't! We ordered the 1/2 onion rings and 1/2 bell peppers. Truth be told, the peppers were better than the onion rings. I also had the amazing seafood gumbo, cooked in a dark roux. I then split a fried shrimp poboy with a friend. Finally got to check F&J's off my bucket list! Very heavy on the stuffing but hearty and delish. The eggplant parm was also good but the only sauce is spooned over the top of the eggplant and not enough to blend into the pasta but I made it work. We had patronized Frankie and Johnny's for years because of their excellent chargrilled oysters. Whenever we visited New Orleans, it was one of our first stops. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When we arrived for a late lunch last week, the restaurant was nearly empty.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The reception from both the hostess and waitress was noticeably unfriendly, but we were looking forward to a favorite dish and thought little of it. Unfortunately, the chargrilled oysters that arrived were nothing like what we had enjoyed on previous visits. Instead of being sizzling hot, they were served at room temperature and had a gritty texture. Because we had not visited in several years, we wondered whether the preparation had changed and ate them anyway. When paying our check, my husband asked whether there had been a change in how the oysters were prepared, since, for one thing, they had not been served hot. The waitress's dismissive response was simply, "Well, they're put on the grill." Later that day, members of our party became violently ill. We cannot say with certainty what caused it, but the condition of those oysters was very concerning, especially given that shellfish should be handled with great care. A few days later, we summoned up our courage and visited the famous Acme Oyster House in the French Quarter, where we ordered chargrilled oysters again. There, they arrived sizzling hot, and grit-free, exactly as we remembered this type of dish should be served. As longtime patrons, we found this experience deeply disappointing. I was disappointed with the grilled artichoke as it was SO full of breadcrumbs, it was hard to find an artichoke in the bowl (see before and after pictures). It always seems packed whenever I drive by but maybe it's just because the parking lot is small. The restaurant itself is big inside though. We arrived at opening to meet up with family from 10 hours away with an interest in crawfish. An online article indicated they might have them, but did not due to current weather conditions. We, however were not disappointed. For an appetizer we ordered a combo appetizer of fried onion rings and bell peppers with what tasted like a made in house ranch. Wow! What a yummy appetizer! Their Fried Oyster Po Boy is on point,...PLENTY of fried Oyster, so no mouthfuls of just bread and mayo. It's a bit of a wait to get one, but definitely worth every bite. Their Seafood Gumbo is crazy dark and has one of my Top 5 Flavors in New Orleans, but it is saddled with a complete lack of meat in it. I had to crumble up some saltines into it to get some sort of bulk. A shame, because the flavor is incredible. Still, I ate a bowl and while i loved it, I remember only 2 pieces of tiny, over-cooked shrimp in the whole bowl. I obviously did not like the meal and didn't eat much but the bartender never offered anything else even when I said there was no artichoke to speak of and handed me a 22$ bill for eating 6 bites of food. Solid Po Boy. It really is. The gumbo lacks a little bit here, but the Po Boy is the star of this restaurant, and it shines through beautifully. As much as I loved the sandwich, I think the service is a bit disingenuous. The "baby" after every sentence irritated me. I get it. I lived in the south for a few years. It is their way, or so they say. But it felt like mouthed curse word rather than being nice. I am sorry that I go through more water than the nearby Mississippi River. Maybe I am reading into things, but it felt that way. I still think it is a solid Po Boy at a solid price.
