$9 ice cream (matcha from Ryder hotel - 10/10!)
Robert S.

I was really craving ice cream and this place looked promising. It was really good and the service was speedy as can be however it was $9 for a cone of ice cream! And the vanilla bean didn't even have vanilla beans in it? I wouldn't go back, but it did satiate my craving pretty well. Super tiny European feeling atmosphere but obviously still in America.

Alfajor and empanada

Gelato, coffees, empanadas, and alfajores. I wish the Charleston area had more Argentine restaurants. Lots of empanada options but go early because they do sell out quickly. The spinach empanada could have used a bit more flavor but the traditional beef one was great. Kind of pricey for an empanada but they are a labor of love so I get it. Very pleased and the service is fast and the young man was very nice!

Nearly nothing in our empanadas

[Empanada review] Overall: Airport-quality empanadas for a premium price. The good: The empanadas were flaky and buttery, and the gentleman behind the counter was friendly and quick. The not-so-good: The empanadas were almost completely empty instead of packed with filling. The flavors were dull and uninspiring, and they certainly weren't warm. I've never been more disappointed eating an emapanada than I did with Freddo. Their milkshakes and gelato look good, but I doubt we'll be back.

Banana split gelato

Some issues that I had, but won't be overly harsh on: One, they've decided to be on Doordash. I try not to use food apps, but if I get a really good deal it can convince me to try a new place, and maybe if it's good enough I'll shop there again. However, this place didn't seem to have figured the system out and my order came as a surprise to them when I arrived. The other problem was that I ordered a "gelato panini", which sounded nice but which they were out of, so they gave me a bit of gelato and a cup and extra empanadas (on top of the two I'd already ordered), which wasn't quite what I wanted but I figure it's good food and there were people waiting behind me so I didn't want to mess around. The gelato I got was a banana split flavor; banana with chocolate flakes and dulce de leche, which sounded good enough to get me to pass up mint chip (which I hardly ever do) and was quite a luxurious flavor. Conversely, I enjoyed my empanadas later, when the aroma of the flaky crust started getting to me. The corn and the spinach versions both had a mouthwatering cheese and onion filling in addition to the vegetable of choice. This place does sweet and savory both well. Notably, an empanada is a practical sort of food to carry around and fills a niche that I don't know is filled by anything else in the robust Charleston restaurant scene. Despite the issues with ordering, they were good enough that I could see coming back some day and just ordering in person.

the caprese empanada (they sell several other kinds too including pepperoni, bacon, or beef)

Freddo offers Argentinian style gelato and empanadas. Besides this location, the only other USA locations are in the Miami metro area. Our favorite flavor of their gelato is the coconut & dulce de leche. It was so good. We also wholeheartedly recommend trying their empanadas which are so flaky and delicious. We loved the caprese one.

Delicious. "Udderly" delicious. GF friendly. No good place to sit, so walk a bit to some steps or hail a pedicab and enjoy.

Luckily, we were able to be seated immediately but it was very close quarters with surrounding tables. The menu is vast with different dessert options. If you want to know what cakes are available, you should check out the display stand right when you enter. Since we were there 2.5 hours before closing, there didn't seem to be a lot of cake options available, but my husband and I decided to share a slice of the s'mores cake with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream to make it à la mode. The s'mores cake was a chocolate cake with mini marshmallows, chocolate fudge, graham crackers, and more marshmallows. The cake was good and had everything I could ever want in it, but it was a little dry. I think this also had to do with it being the end of the night. The ice cream complemented the flavor well. It would have been better with a second scoop of ice cream though. Service was great! It took about 10 minutes from when we ordered to get our dessert. I would probably come back here again, but not so late at night so there would be fresher cake with more options available.

We waited about 5 to 10 minutes to be acknowledged while two employees stood nearby. The two layer chocolate caramel pecan cake, which our waitress initially could not find, was dry and tasted stale. I would not order it again. The Tollhouse pie was a bit better, but the presentation and the whipped cream were the standouts, and the whipped cream wasn't even homemade! That's the best thing I could say about our experience. The food, pricing, service, and ambiance all fell below average. When you are located downtown with so many great dessert options around, you really need to step up your game. We will not be returning.
