Hidden gem ! Near Walmart plaza but as soon as you walk inside it is amazing. Transformed into Louisiana / French cuisine. Neatly decorated and has several intimate seating arrangements for couples who want some privacy and romance. Jazzy music on background and softly lit candles and flowers at every table. You can't ask for a better atmosphere. Now regarding food. We were not so hungry, but we ordered Cesar salad with blackened chicken and tomato base seafood jumbo ( shrimp and crawfish) cup size. We ordered the hush puppies app to start; not only were they perfectly fried but the accompanying sauces were also delish! But the entrees stole the show, mine being the star of the night. My salmon's cook was textbook, perfectly moist while still being wrapped in pancetta and then topped with chilled crab and greens. Truly the BEST SALMON DISH I've ever had. Not only was the main component amazing, the dirty rice and corn are not to be forgotten. The whole entree was superb. My husbands entree, shrimp and crawfish pasta, is exactly what you would ever want in a seafood pasta dish! First thing to note, this place is tiny inside! It's at the end of a strip center in a location that was probably designed as a small retail space. With that in mind, be prepared for a wait during peak times. Luckily, we went near closing time, so our wait was only about 20 minutes. We were pleasantly surprised the food was flavorful with huge portions. I got the grilled salmon with shrimp in a garlic butter sauce my bother got the chicken pasta. Both were amazing. Their fried calamari and seafood gumbo were underwhelming. The calamari was rubbery and the gumbo was more like a soup. As a native Houstonian, I know a good gumbo when I taste it and their's definitely wasn't one of them. All in all they have solid offerings and I'll definitely go back. read more

But French Quarter Grille? I'd eat here every day if my wallet and waistline could afford it! Sweet mother of French Cajun Cookin'! I'm so glad I chose not to wear flip flops and got a little fluffed up for our dinner here. A girl always feels pampered with a red rose and a tablecloth on the table. Hubby and I took time to study the menu and settled in to nibble the warm soft rolls and butter with a glass of Prosecco and an Avita Amber beer. We both chose the House salad, a scrumptious (I really dislike that word but there is no better description for this salad) array of field greens, crisp chopped vegetables, sliced almonds and loads of shaved Manchego cheese served on an ice cold plate. I made a note to add sliced almonds to my weekly salad creations for their wonderful nutty, chewy texture. But wait....not even halfway through our salads, our plates of food arrived. Whoa! What's the hurry? Our server apologized but I suddenly felt very rushed and unpampered. Gobbling my salad so I could enjoy my entree while it was still hot was not what I imagined. We both loved the Catfish Ponchartrain topped with a shrimp, crab and crawfish brandy sauce served with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled yellow squash. However, my check-in did warrant a 15% off deal that came in handy for a $200+ tab. So on to the goodness.... I loved everything about this place. It's small, quaint, dark and filled with all kinds of savory smell goods. Thinking about it is making my mouth water all over again. And their calamari....the best I've tasted yet! Tender, never chewy and fried to a light golden crisp. Now, let's skip all the obviously awesome stuff and get straight to the kicker......Tabasco Cheesecake. I didn't believe it when I heard it either, but it's very real and tastes very good! Made using ground up then crystallized Tabasco chili seeds, the heat hits you about 4 seconds after your first bite and hangs around just enough to make you want a little more and more and more until you've broken your "never eating an entire desert alone" pact. French Quarter Grille is tucked away off I-35 and is a very intimate and romantic spot. Perfect for a date night! I came here on a Friday night shortly after they opened and the place was packed. Despite not having a reservation, the hostess (whom was very sweet) had us seated in about 10 minutes. The service was pretty slow. Our server was very professional, informative, and nice; however, it was about 10 minutes before he even came to take our drink orders. By then, I was not about to gamble on when he'd be back, so we placed our appetizer orders at the same time. We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes which are topped with a crabmeat remoulade. The dish was creative, delicious, and beautifully plated. One of the highlights of our meal and a light way to start off! As for the entrees, we ordered the Shrimp and Crawfish Pasta and the Catfish Gumbo. The Pasta was served with a mushroom brandy cream sauce which was both creamy and delicious. I give the chef credit for not overcooking the shrimp and crawfish, as they were not rubbery is not an uncommon mistake. However, I did find a couple small pieces of shell within my dish, which was a bit of a turnoff. On the other hand, the Catfish Gumbo was not as impressive and honestly forgettable. While the catfish had a persistent heat (which anyone who follows me knows I appreciate), it was particularly fishy tasting (in a bad way). I have enjoyed better Gumbo in Austin, so this is probably one dish I would advise is less impressive. Finally, dessert. We ordered the orange creme brulee which was delicious! It was light, sweet, and had strong notes of orange. After being absolutely stuffed, it was still easy to enjoy. Unfortunately, the top layer of melted sugar was not done correctly: there was no breaking through the top layer, it was all cream and could have been executed better. So why 3 stars? Overall, I was underwhelmed and did not understand the hype after coming here. While most of the food was good (4 star flavors in my book!), it should have been executed better and I simply have enjoyed better Cajun food and do not feel the price is on point with the quality of service and food. The first time I went was for my birthday dinner a couple of years ago and I liked it fine as a more budget friendly alternative to Pappadeaux's. Fast forward to today. My parents and I arrive at 6:30 on a Friday night without a reservation. We were seated fairly quickly, which was cool. We received menus and drinks relatively quickly. However, it took a little long to get our menu order. A six top had just been seated and we figure we're going to have to wait a little bit. My mother asked for lemons for her drink twice. Never got 'em until the busser brought them to her...and refilled our drinks...and brought our food out. It was like our server essentially disappeared once the six top showed up. I could understand this if the restaurant was slammed. It wasn't. There were essentially four other tables and three other servers on the floor. She took our order, brought bread out to our table, never refilled the basket, let dirty dishes accumulate on our table even when our entrees arrived (and she nearly spilled my dad's drink into his lap), and barely checked in. Normally we're patient people (as many of us have worked in restaurants before), but it just seemed like very little was given by way of customer service when I've sat in busier restaurants with more attentive servers. Oh, and the étouffée was slightly under-seasoned and the crawfish tasted like it came from a can (I really hope this isn't the case). I don't know if tonight was an off night, but the subpar service has me on the fence about if I'll return. it's my 100th review! Yaaaaaay! I decided to pick a spot that is special to me and well deserving of a good review. The FQG was the first "fancy date" the bf took me on, over 2 years ago. We have continued to patronize the lovely establishment and consistently love everything we eat. The FQG is unassuming because it is in a shopping center with a Wal-mart. This may turn you off. Just try to avert your eyes and steer towards the restaurant. There is a hostess station and they lead you to your table in the small dining room - i wouldn't say more than 30 tables. There is dark wood, chandeliers and New Orleans themed paintings. It's a comfortable place. The bf and i have long shrugged off the "fancy" moniker, as we now live around the corner from the place and can go on a regular basis. I no longer feel the need to dress up, is what i'm sayin. This last visit we had the dinner special ( a tenderloin topped with 3 friend shrimp, mashed potatoes and green beans. - $35) and the shrimp and crawfish pasta (15$). The steak was perfectly cooked (they Always are) and had a spicy rub on it that seasoned the meat perfectly. The 3 fried shrimp were cornmeal battered and fried to perfection. We weren't big fans of the mashed potatoes (weirdly grainy) and the green beans (limp and boring) but the steak was ment to be the star of the show and it was. The shrimp and seafood pasta looked and tasted amazing. 3 color cheese tortellini, boiled crawfish tails and grilled shrimp tossed in a cream sauce. It was divine! The tails were BIG and meaty and the shrimp perfectly grilled. I was pretty much in food nirvana. I took most of it home (tiny stomach), but happily devoured it (cold! yep. i went there.) a couple of hours later. The Boy and i even went all out and got dessert! Considering over half my meal was already boxed to go, we really didn't have room for dessert. But, dammit, we wanted it! we never do that.... really. We took some chocolate raspberry creme brulee to go. i gave it about 30 mins in the fridge before going for it. It was amazing! And i was impressed that they were able to make a really good sugar crust on top in a to go container. Service was a little off this time (which, i won't put past my decision that FQG is no longer "fancy" and i rolled up in my kitchy t-shirt, converse and messy pony tail at 8.30 on Friday night... but, hey. This is Austin.) We waited a little to long for bread, we waited a little to long to have our orders taken. We waited a little too long for a water refill, but all forgivable for some of the most delicious Cajun food in town. Take your girl here for your first "fancy" date. Take your parents when you want a "fancy" meal and don't have to pay for it. Go for lunch because it's actually quite reasonably priced. Just take yourself. The food I had here was great! The crawfish ettouffe is meant to be an appetizer, but for those of you with small stomachs and a love for crawfish ettouffe, you can eat this as a meal and it'll fill you right up. The soup is a bit spicy, but it goes down quite easily when you're too tired for solids. It was perfect for my long 5.5 hour road trip here. The shrimp, crawfish, & andouille sausage pasta was wonderful as well! A better choice than the crawfish ettouffe. It has angel hair pasta and a variety of mixed ingredients in a creamy creole tomato sauce. Finally, the winner of these three entrees was the steak special! I believe it changes, but this was the most bomb steak I've had thus far. Medium rare with so much red, but it was extremely tender and you can slice it like paper. It was amazing. If the waitress ever recommends you a steak special, I'd say just dive into it! Ours was $35.95, so expect a price of that range for your steaks. Dessert also hit the spot with the popular croissant bread pudding and turtle cheesecake. If you've never had bread pudding, try it! You get a very moist and spongey bread pudding which is piping hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top which makes that interesting temperature contrast. If you've had bread pudding before, I'd say go with the turtle cheesecake. It's less sweet and just as enjoyable. From the looks of it, French Quarter Grille seems to be a pretty classy cajun restaurant that's good enough for a date, but everyone around me was so casually dressed. No matter though. I will happily fancy up for this place even if their customers are underdressed ;) Loved the food here, but service was alright. It was obvious they want you to leave as soon as they close. Walked in at 8:30, 9pm close sign. When I mentioned the veggies were too salty, they initially replied the kitchen is closed, then made a new batch, but it was drowning in butter and seemed to take 10 minutes to prepare. The food portions have definitely gotten smaller. In the past, we have eaten and taken leftovers home. This time, we ate and left not full... Their prices are high enough that we shouldn't leave hungry. The creme Brulee was described as raspberry chocolate creme brulee. It was coconut chocolate creme brulee with 3 raspberries on top. Gross. I did not like the strong coconut extract flavor. When I asked if there was coconut in there (knowing the answer) I was told, I don't know. I came here two nights in a row because it was just that good! The first night I tried a seafood pasta which was really good and the next night I had the stuffed catfish which was amazing. I really like this place is so unexpected given it's location and that it feels quite intimate. To be fair, it's been a steady decline in service but the straw that broke my back was service received from the owner. After a long day, I placed an order for pickup through the Yelp app last week and went to pick up my order, making sure I left enough time so I wouldn't be at the restaurant waiting. Got to the restaurant and I still had to wait while they tried to understand how I'd placed an order for pickup through Yelp. As the owner had the audacity to mansplain condescendingly (and incorrectly might I add) that you could only place an order for delivery on Yelp. So, not only did I have a wait on the food, get mansplained to, I was also double charged for my order because the owner couldn't wrap his head around how Yelp e-paymemts work. The food itself came with a side of corn that I didn't want at all. I asked to have it completely removed (a.k.a. take it out of the bag, I don't want it at all) but of course since I am just a woman who clearly doesn't understand technology, the owner didn't do that, he put it on the side. Over the past few months as I've noticed the decline in service (i.e. the longer times to get seated despite making a reservation, only being offered water once during a long dinner despite having an empty water glass for HOURS and asking multiple times for water), I thought maybe the owner was having staffing issues but after my last visit, it is clear. The fish rots from the head. The silver lining is that this will force me to finally go explore other Cajun restaurants in Austin. Hopefully I will find ones that seat you promptly, don't mansplain, understand how technology works and don't want their diners to die of thirst. read more

I love this place. Cajun food is a weakness of mine, and I'm glad this place is close by. It was only the third time I've been here, but this place will be a staple for sure. The two prior times, I had the Shrimp and Crawfish Pasta with a mushroom brandy cream sauce over cheese tortellini. Let me tell you - there were so many shrimp and crawfish in there I thought the bowl was bottomless. The flavor is amazing to boot. The whole dish is a combination that just hits all the right spots for me. Tonight, my wife and I went for dinner and I had the Fish Ponchartrain blackened, topped with shrimp, crab and crawfish in mushroom brandy cream. They had several choices for the type of fish, and I chose trout. Again, everything was perfectly seasoned and topped with a generous amount of seafood. They had some interesting sour cream and horseradish mashed potatoes; they weren't my favorites, but I figured I'd try them anyway. My wife had the Chicken Benjamin, which was onion crusted, topped with crispy prosciutto, swiss and sautéed crawfish over mushroom brandy cream. The sauce was not spiced as much to compliment the lighter flavor of the chicken. I tried the dish, and I was amazed at how tender the chicken breast breast was, and the amazing flavor of the onion crust. So far, the only thing that's a slight negative is the sometimes slow service for drink refills, but it's nothing that makes me deduct enough points to stray off of a 5-star rating. The restaurant is small, but has nice ambiance for couples. I hope the chef sticks to this winning combination of flavor and good value for the money. [Update 4/14] Went again for dinner tonight to use our expiring Groupon. We had some of the same dishes we've previously had, so no updates on the food - it's still great. Service, however, was fine. Our family was looking for a place to celebrate my sister's college graduation, but we didn't want chain restaurants we could have back in Houston. Yelp to the rescue! I was looking for something near the hotel specializing in seafood. I stumbled across French Quarter Grille and saw the great reviews, one of which was written by a college friend whose taste buds I trust. Decision made! Everything, (Everything?), EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! We had fried green tomatoes, oyster rockefeller, and crawfish hushpuppies as appetizers, all of which were amazing. They were out of Austin Cider, but our waitress Sheridan made white wine spritzers that were a hit with the entire table. For entrees we had steak and catfish pontchartrain, stuffed catfish, Mahi, and Ravioli. They were all scrumptious, and even the sides of mashed potatoes and cabbage were amazing. Crawfish Etouffee was delicious The calamari had big pieces and was very good with the tarter sauce and marinara sauce the service is good the dirty rice was good the sausage and crawfish pasta was amazing! It didn't have to much spicyness but it had the perfect spicyness I loved the shrimp it was so big and the orange creme bulai was so good it tasted like a orange dream machine over all this is my new favorite restaurant in Austin and the orange creme bulai is my favorite dessert read more

Very much authetic upscale New Orleans style food. The gumbos are phenominal, and the po-boys are extrordinary, and the seafood selection is superb. The place looks like its been there a while, but I must admit it was excellent service and environment: very good for those business dinners where you want something upscale and more "local" without it being like the latest Domain-corp-manufactured like chain. The French Quarter Salmon is one of the best things you can have in Austin. I love this place, and have stuck with them through their move and rebranding, several years ago. Their etouffee and gumbo are also fantastic. If you crave cajun, this is your place. read more

Hands down, the BEST cajun style food in Austin. Our server knew the menu like it was the back of her hand. Her recommendations did not disappoint as she was spot on everything! Her attitude was beyond anything I've ever seen. The food had such amazing flavors and freshness. We were informed that everything is fresh daily and you can actually taste that in the food! I ended up ordering the steak Pontchartrain and my other half order the shrimp and crawfish pasta. The steak was so tender and flavorful. We also order the Rockefeller oysters as a starter and ended our dinner with the bread pudding! All of this left us in a food coma. The owner came to our table and had a chat with us as we finished our meal. He was very nice and seemed as if he kept pride in his restaurant. Becuase of this alone, he has earned my business for a life time. Add in the rest of our experience, we will recommend this place to everyone we know! Keep up the amazing work! read more

Hot dam this place is a total gem. They have a very cool menu with lots of options. I went for the fish ponchitrain and choose the redfish. It came with potatoes and cabbage which was so delicious. I would order this again and have a hard time deciding what to order. I called to get a to go order but I wish I had been able to eat inside. It's nice and cozy. This would be a great date place. I really need to learn how to cook this at home. New Orleans Grill you can greatly inspired me and left me wanting to come back very soon. read more
