My boyfriend and I came here for a late dinner. It wasn't our first time here, but it'll probably be our last unfortunately. Food: Okay, it's basic "fancy" Italian food for a pretty penny. Nothing special really; taste was okay at best. Got an order of calamari for an appetizer. I got the brown butter gnocchi and my boyfriend got the fettucine cartoccia. Calamari was definitely old, probably sitting under a warmer for a couple hours before being served. We had to ask for marinara because it came with a strange tan dipping sauce that was not appetizing. The marinara sauce was warm; we assumed it was just a spaghetti sauce for another dish they were making. My gnocchi was gummy but seasoned and sauced well. The fettucine came out in a foil bowl, which we didn't understand why. Later that night, our stomaches weren't happy. Drinks: I believe it's BYOB, but we didn't drink that night. Didn't see a bar inside. Service: The way the entrance is set is strange. You enter through the side and there's tables immediately in front of you already. Waited a minute to be seated, but it was definitely awkward since we didn't know where to stand. Service was okay. Instead of checking up on us occasionally, the waiter was flirting with another patron at a different table exchanging numbers. Like really? I've been eyeing this place for about 2 years now and was so excited when the owner posted that Sunday boozy brunches were coming back. I immediately made a reservation for my birthday. I was told there would be a DJ and the whole nine. When I called to confirm my reservation 2 weeks prior to the event, I was told my reservation wasn't listed and there's no DJ on Sundays. So glad my gut instinct told me to call and confirm. I've tried emailing, calling, leaving a message and contacting the establishment on social media -- crickets!! So sad that this is what it has to come to. I'm trying to support a local restaurant after such a tough year and their behavior is completely unprofessional. My first time attending Fresco Da Franco was this New Years Eve 12/31/18. We were a party of 10 that made reservations a month in advance. Our entire party arrived right at 9pm because we were told not to arrive earlier due to the early seating. Not a problem as this is common on New Year's Eve. Well, this did become a problem because we were not seated until about 9:30pm. Upon sitting down, we were presented with a menu that was different than the one sent to us before this night: 1. There were items removed from the menu. (Ahi tuna) 2. Never received Prosecco upon seating 3. There was an up charge for dessert even though our $80 prefixed deal included dessert. 4. There was no passed champagne at 11:30pm 5. There was a $10 corking fee for a BYOB. I found the corking fee the most hair raising because I called them on the previous Saturday to confirm what was allowed for the BYOB and the $10 fee was never mentioned. This was a complete snake move knowing people had no choice but to pay it. It makes me question how well this establishment is doing to back door customers like that. When asked about why we were being charged a corking fee and not previous told about it the manager said "well it's New Year's Eve". Completely unacceptable. Aside from the menu audibles and secret fee, the service was absolutely horrible. Our waiter was ghost all night, and when we did finally get his attention it was like asking him to give up his first born to help us. As for the owner, Franco, he seemed more concerned with talking into the microphone all night than his customers concerns. He went out of the way to praise his manager and let everyone know he now wears a Rolex. Meanwhile, this manager was a total failure all night. He was not able to help our table at all and provided zero solutions. Terrible customer service! As we all looked forward to this fun evening it turned out to be a total disaster! Very disappointing! This will be my first and last time here and would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. They are con artists. P.S. As a DJ, you don't say "check check" into the microphone all night. We called several places to book a late lunch/early dinner for Christmas Day. They took our reservation immediately and received us with a smile on all of their faces at 3pm. The food here is honestly gross. Went here for NYE and was so disappointed. $80 per person for what they advertised as 3 courses but then charged for dessert. They also charge $10 for a corking fee which in NJ is ILLEGAL!!!! They served pasta in a tinfoil over my plate because apparently they don't want to wash dishes, tacky! They hyped up a huge night for the DJ to only come on at 11:15 PM. We arrived at 9 PM and we're supposed to stay all night and they rushed us through the whole meal. Desserts they served were awful. A stale, not even warm, lava cake. This place robbed everyone on NYE and they should be embarrassed. Oh and no champagne was served at 11:30 like they told us they would. We came across this cute spot while walking, looking for a new place to try. When we walked in we werent immediately greeted, it took a few minutes for the hostess to get to us and when she did she was not very welcoming. my bf and I both noticed her indifference. Our server, Mark was amazing from the start. This is a BYOB and he Offered us a wine list and told us the liquor store delivers. We had our wine within 10 minutes. We had the Fried calamari (a bit tough) & artichoke appetizer. We thought the artichoke was going to be a traditional stuffed artichoke but it was marinated hearts and although they were very good, it wasnt what I expected. While we were there it was not very busy but the hostess was helping to run food and I had a view if the pick up area. The hostess repeatedly playing with her long hair before grabbing dishes to drop at tables. I was happy that she was not the one to serve any of our food. I ordered the Lamb Shank over risotto, which was absolutely perfect. One of the best I'd ever had and my bf had the Bronzino which was perfectly cooked and wonderful. When we were clearly finished we requested the food to be wrapped and the check at the same time. The food was wrapped quickly but we waited about 20 minutes before we saw our server or even the hostess to request the check again. When I did see the hostess she walked to the front grabbed her mimosa glass, without giving a glance to any part of the dining room and chugged it back as she walked back into the back room. It turned out our server was the only one on the floor tonight so I understood his delay. All in all the dinner was great in a scale of 1-10 Dinner 8 - Appetizers 4 -Service 8 -Hostess 1 I would go back for Mark and anything on the dinner menu, the hostess should take a serve safe class. read more

The Good: -Food was Ahhmazing. These are the dishes I liked: Fettuccine with vodka sauce and lobster meat, the risotto (main menu-not the special of the day), the black pasta (even though they said it wasn't spicy, it is: Medium spice), the eggplant tower appetizer; last but not least, the Nutella pizza- just ahhhmazing and enough to share for a group of 4-6 people (ask for some ice cream on top for an added burst of flavor-and possible heart attack lol). -Service: Friendly and efficient -We sat outside and were not rushed (despite plenty of people waiting to be seated outside). The so-so: A lot of the pasta dishes have shellfish which is not ideal if you have an allergy (which I don't but my sister in law did so she didn't get to taste any of our dishes). What do you get when you combine the Bada Bing with a copy cat LuNello? FRESCO We had an 8:15 reservation for a Friday night. Got there about 5 minutes early. Hostess was amazingly friendly and was able to accommodate us within 10 minutes. The interior is very warm - and very loud. Club music blasting within the dining area. We were seated next to a thunderous party of about 20. Surprisingly this table of 20 had many open liters of hard alcohol throughout (Wild Turkey, Skyy Vodka etc...) Have the BYOB laws changed? The lighting above our table was dim on one side and the was a heavy duty colored flood light on the other. Unfortunately it created a tremendous amount of heat throughout the meal. Our waiter - well was a waiter like no other. I've work in the F&B industry for many years - from bartender to manager. Our waiter was SO HIGH he made ordering quite difficult. We needed 4 glasses of ice and he couldn't comprehend. After a game of " who's on first" for 10 minutes, we were able to get what we needed from the busboy instead. Ordering our food was quite a task as well. He never once made eye contact when giving us his 1 word answers, often looking into space or to the floor. When ordering apps, we tried ordering pizza, but they were out of pizza ( so he said). We ordered: Eggplant stack - looked pretty but completely lacked flavor. Pumpkin ravioli - amazingly delish Rolled mozzarella - very very good. When we were done with apps, our waiter must have just taken a few more hits of what ever it was he was smoking. Timing was perfect. We tried to order our entrees. Asked about the scallops to see if I could get something other than risotto. ( I hate risotto ). He replied, "we don't do that here " Ok. This next part was perplexing... I've never encountered waitstaff that will talk you out of the most expensive item on the menu. Not because it isn't good, but because he's not willing to serve it with the sauce of the side. What is this mystery dish you ask? It was the steak special with plum sauce. I wanted the sauce on the side. He said " no it's too messy" WTF Then asked about the skirt steak. This came with a green sauce on top. Can I get this on the side. Again he said no. So I decided not to order an entree and let my 3 dinner friends eat without me. Apparently the waiter realized he might have been difficult and allowed me to order the skirt steak with the sauce on the side ( cooked very very rare) When our meals came, of course I got the steak with the sauce on it (cooked medium rare) The thought of having to deal with the waiter was painful, so I tried to eat it. This was either the cheapest cut of skirt steak or just not skirt steak at all. My guess was that it wasn't skirt steak. The green sauce was gross and flavorless. Meat had no fat ( unlike skirt steak) and was almost difficult to chew. My bf ( who complains about nothing) took a bite and actually agreed with me. He suggested I put salt on it but unfortunately,there is none on the table. My dinner companions all finish their meal. When the busboy comes over - I tell him my issue. Waiter comes running over ( he must have been just coming down off his high and for the first time during out meal made eye contact.) He was friendly and very apologetic. Offered to put another order in for me. 20 min later I get a new steak - same shitty cut of meat cooked med rare (not very very rare). I forced about half down and gave up. Waiter probably took a few more tokes and came back in to take dessert order. Dessert - we ordered the Nutella calzone - they were out. Ordered the cannoli. Eh Plan on coming here? In the 2.5 hour we were here, there were 9 birthdays. For each birthday, they turn the music up to an unbearably loud level while parading out with what looks like lit roadside flares in each hand. Conspicuous pretentiousness has never held much allure for me. I wasn't overly impressed by the Maserati, Bentley and McClaren parked in front of the valet stand. I know people who own such vehicles and there really is no correlation between their ability to afford a luxury car and their taste level in dining options. I own a 6 figure car and, odd as it may be, I parked it in the lot down the street. No need to flaunt anything to anyone because, like I said, I'm not a fan of conspicuous pretense. Unfortunately, I may just have been the only one. Upon entering you see a picture of whatever her name is who's the NJ Real Housewife who went to jail. Not sure why there would be a picture of a celebrity convict but there it was in plain sight. Oh well, I guess that everyone is entitled to their favorite restaurant but for them to brag about it seems foolish. Again, no relationship between celebrity and taste. Food was good and prices were just about right. Sat outside which was a bit cramped but really not horrible. It seems like their clientele includes a lot of regulars who management seemed to take great pains to acknowledge and to schmooze with. It got to the point where I was actually feeling like an outcast. Maybe it was lack or frequency or my choice of off site parking. The BYO aspect is great, especially with an excellent wine store almost directly across the street. I understand that they'll deliver a bottle from store to table but again, that seems more like pretense since it really is literally a 30 second walk across the street. Like others have mentioned, the place is loud. When walking to the bathroom I heard screams of exuberance from numerous female patrons. Not sure if it was to compensate for the volume of the music or because they were loud mouths. Or perhaps it was a bit of both. Anyway, the night was interesting. Not sure whether I would pay them another visit being that choices are so plentiful in Montclair but again, if you can get over the noise, the pretense and the crowd, this may just be the place for you. read more

Stumbled on this place when looking for outdoor seating in Montclair. The outdoor seating is nice but that's about it for this place. I did not notice it was particularly loud like other reviewers complained about, but we were also outside. I did notice that the waitstaff were more than happy to complain to each other, in front of diners, about how the chef/owner was, how he reacts to complaints, and how he likes to come out and "flex his muscle" so to speak (their words). I found it highly unprofessional that they would speak about the chef/owner like that in front of diners. I understand needing to vent, but it bodes poorly for a place if the waitstaff and hosts speak so poorly of the chef/owner in front of diners like that. I did see the chef and he was much more interested in showing off his Maserati (parked in front of the restaurant) than actually doing what the chef/owner is supposed to do. As for the food, if you like your food dripping and swimming in butter then this is the place to go. While the menu does say that items are cooked in beurre blanc sauce or with butter, there is a difference between cooking with it for taste and dumping a whole stick of butter in for the fun of it. The scallops and grits (pictured) were dripping with butter when you lifted them and the pasta that I had had a pool of butter at the bottom of the bowl. I actually moved the pasta to a separate bowl to try to get rid of some of the butter. I did not try the pizza but I would say that if you really enjoy your food with extra butter then this is the place for you. Otherwise I would not go. Butter should not be the main item in the dish on display. Will not be returning. read more

Three stars is really pushing it: this was a uniformly lousy dining experience in what could have been an otherwise fine restaurant. Mother's Day brunch is never the best indication for an eatery's skills but between laughably bad service and unseasoned food, it seemed like a particularly off-service for Fresco. Out to brunch with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, and cousin. We were lucky to find a place able to take a reservation for seven on what is usually the biggest 'brunch day' of the year. Our hostess got us seated quickly, and the waiter attending to us was very friendly, if a bit scattered. That impression grew as the meal went on. The waiter forgot several orders, was slow in bringing coffee, and seemed completely bewildered at the basics of his job. It didn't help that the food itself, while edible and not without merit, was quite bland. Not being much of a breakfast person, I went with a chicken pesto panini. The chicken was completly tasteless, though the bread had a nice texture and the pesto was spot-on. The basket of homemade potato chips were a little uneven (some much crisper than others), but a tasy side. Given the prime location of Fresco (right there on the Church Street mall), the prices weren't as sky-high as expected and I get the sense that what we experienced wasn't them at their A-game. Still, one of the more underwhelming meals I've had this year. read more

Excellent food- not so great service. We came here on the Tuesday after Christmas for my friends' 30th. We sat for about 20 minutes before anyone approached our table. When the waiter arrived, he said it was unexpectedly "busier than a Saturday night". Understandable- but we didn't even have water until about 25 minutes after sitting down. It also took over an hour for our food to come out. Their online menu isn't updated, as I thought they had pizza but the waiter then said that they changed their menu and only offer pizza if you do a pre-fixe menu. I ended up getting the salmon which came over a VERY creamy risotto. It was really good but I would steer clear of this dish if you have even a slightly sensitive stomach. They brought out sparklers for our friend's birthday and played music when they brought it out, which was cool. Maybe it was just an off night on the service end. Very truly "Meh." Not my type of thing. Not impressed by its 'trendiness', or that pictures of celebrities line the entrance. I think I was supposed to be impressed by all of the above, but I'm probably not their target demographic. What I WOULD HAVE been impressed by, but didn't get: - Prompt service. Stood there helplessly by the entrance while staff looked us in the eye and promptly walked away because I guess it wasn't their job to greet potential customers. Finally seated after wandering in and out of the restaurant to flag down somebody. Once seated, didn't get any water or bread on the table. Had to find someone who was not our waiter to get a glass of water and place the order. - Prompt food. 25-30 minutes for a Panini at 3 in the afternoon? - Good value. Overpriced food that looked admittedly beautiful in presentation but extremely bland in flavor. It's the type of food you feel really sad about because it looks so nice but when you put it in your mouth disappointment hits you like a bag of bricks. The one saving grace our party commented upon when we left? That we at least came for lunch and not dinner, thus limiting the damage this experience had on our wallets. My curiosity was sated. I often wondered how this restaurant could be rated in such a mediocre way when it is often so popular. Expected this place to blow me away with the food. You won't be disappointed with the service, attention, or the atmosphere. Calamari appetizer OK at best. The egg plant tower was the best dish of the night. Should the eggplant be the star of the show at Fresco Da Franco? The Diver Sea Scallops were so underwhelming. Although cooked nicely I expected a higher quality product on the plate. However, it did come with a very nice arugula salad with a hint of truffle and gorgonzola. A wonderful combination and blending of flavors. However, I didn't expect the arugula to be the best part of the Scallop dinner. I suspect a quality chef, with good recipes, but the quality of product just wasn't there. Second chance: Rock Shrimp Risotto. On a Sunday afternoon, I enter with the hopes of having risotto. I love risotto. The vibe was different from when I last visited, it was vibrant, the music was loud and many more tables were filled. I liked it, the ambiance that was set. I was able to select where I'd like to sit, which was a bonus. Service was a bit better & I finally had my wine but on to the risotto.. and here is why I'm giving the risotto five stars. The price., Risotto is ridiculously expensive. At $19 this risotto is filling & a large enough portion to satisfy. It was a better temperature than the last and creamier. Okay, but not sure what the hype is all about here at this relatively new Italian eatery on Church Street in Montclair. We made a last minute reservation on a Saturday night in July and were pleasantly surprised they could accommodate our party of four. We arrived on time and were seated after a short 10 minute wait. It was bustling and there was absolutely no place to stand to wait for our table..good thing the weather was perfect outside as we stood on the street trying to dodge the servers bringing food to those dining outside before being seated. Not a big deal. The service was, how shall I say this, mixed? Very friendly and attentive, but the wait between ordering and our two courses was extraordinarily long. We were enjoying a relaxed night out so we didn't care, but the lengthy wait was certainly noticeable. We did run into our server at Red Mango and he thanked us for the generous tip. Yes, he was a good server slave to a kitchen that admittedly just couldn't keep up with the packed restaurant. The salads we had for appetizers were standout delicious. The beet salad was beautifully plated and apparently tasty-and the tricolore and arugula with prosciutto also delicious. The lettuce was crisp and the salads perfectly dressed. To be fair, the food was actually quite good. Our friends had the salmon and scallop specials, each plated nicely and served with well-seasoned accompaniments. I had the scallop special appetizer as my main course and it was also very good. The divers were perfectly seared and tender and the salsa fresco it was served with had a real spicy kick, delicious. The scallop risotto seemed to be the only disappointment-again, the scallops were cooked to perfection but the creamy arborio rice mix was pasty and not to my husband's liking. One of the main reasons I refrained from giving this place 3 stars is the atmosphere. It is nice to see a new restaurant doing so well but between the long wait between courses, spotty service and loud decibels, I just could not rate it higher. The decor is fine but it is the eatery cum dance club vibe that was a real turn-off. The birthday celebrations they do, while festive, are quite disruptive. Three servers come out and present a dessert with these giant sparklers and dance around the birthday table for a good minute and a half. It is a spectacle alright. One time in a night-okay, but there were at minimum 4 of these performances in a two and half hour meal and I felt like I was transported to Jersey Shore side by side with Snooki and JWow and gang. Perhaps it is best to try this place during the week. I suspect the food will be as good and the atmosphere a little less Jersey Shore. I imagine the service will also be very good. It is unfortunate, though, because with so many restaurants in the area (and solid Italian spots like Osterio Giotto, Salute and Fascino) it will be some time before we give this newbie another shot. read more

Atmosphere: I loved the atmosphere. It was super trendy and they had an Italian movie playing on a giant screen on the back wall. They music they were playing was good too. It kind of feels like you are in a club inside but in a good way. BYOB: Always a plus! Valet parking: Helpful since it's hard to find parking around there! Negatives- Valet parking: They charge $10 to valet park your car! I've never seen it that high anywhere. That was really annoying but we had no other choice because we couldn't find parking. Service: Our waiter was pretty rude and not personable at all. He also kind of rushed us the whole time. Prices: This place is pretty over priced. The salmon at $22 and skirt steak at $26 were okay but a bowl of asparagus soup for $10 and a small stack of eggplant, tomatoes and mozzarella for $16 was a joke. Overall, I'd suggest coming here only if you want a fun night out with your friends at a trendy place. Be ready to spend a lot of money, remember to byob, and don't expect the best food in the world. read more

Had to change my original review from 4 to now 5 stars. I came here on a Saturday night for dinner and WOW! The place was PACKED. We made reservations and were seated right away even though we were late due to Montclair's [lack of] parking. One tip for anyone who comes here on the weekends: ORDER THE MEATBALLS!! I've never had meatballs like this in my life and I read somewhere that the owners mother rolls them by hand. They were so tender, almost like butter. The ricotta was creamy and delicious. I could easily have this alone with some bread and be satisfied. To put it simply, the food is amazing. The staff is amazing. Love it here. Definitely has become a local favorite of mine. read more
