This place used to be a real treat for me back in my early years living in Eureka. I would have been satisfied with a large order of french fries by itself back then. They were so large you could fill up on fries alone. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. The last few times I've eaten there both the burger and the order of fries seemed small and taste was mediocre. Wait times vary but are usually on the longer end in comparison to most restaurants. I've had to wait even when I called my order in ahead of time. The one time I really paid attention to the time, I spent 45 minutes waiting just for a burger and fries. I live fairly close to Fresh Freeze but go elsewhere. I hate to say it but you just pay too much for too little there now. read more

Diners like Johnny Rockets or Mel's are cool and the food is usually pretty good,but those places can't compete with the experience of eating in a genuine 1950's drive-in. This place has been around for 55 years, an eternity in the restaurant business. Most of the tourists passing through on 101 won't find this treasure since it's located about a mile off the main drag. But it's worth the detour not only to enjoy the great food but also the friendly service and the large collection of model cars. If you're in Eureka don't miss it! read more

It's alright. Every time I call to order (once every three weeks or so) I get the busy signal not because they are... their phone is ALWAYS OFF THE HOOK. Once I get there and typically with one or two other customers there it takes 15 min just to order food. read more

A throwback to the Happy Days-style 50s drive-in (drive up?) burger stand. They don't have the car hops here, though, so you do have to go in. Decent burgers and fries. I like the Humboldt Burger combo. Service can be a little hit-or-miss, but it's never been atrocious. Great shakes. Hot dogs, too. Since this place can be a little busy and take a little time to get your food out, I would recommend you call your order in advance if you're in a hurry at all. read more

What is nice is that there is plenty of outdoor seating but what is not so nice are the burgers. The buns are too big and the meat patty is too thin. But the fries are good and the prices are reasonable. Oh, and you have 2 choices of burger, large or small... I got the large and it turned out to be what I would expect a standard burger size would be which is a quarter pound patty. I suspect the small is there for the kiddos. I have lived in Eureka all my life and grew up with Fresh Freeze. I loved it! Things have changed. I recently ordered my grandson a child's hot dog meal. I asked for cheese on the hot dog. The young inexperienced girl said " we don't put cheese on kid hot dogs." after unsuccessful debate I gave up. I said, " so a kid can't have cheese because their a kid?" she said yes! No cheese allowed on kid hot dogs! I said I expect to pay for the cheese. Nope, still no cheese allowed! Made no sense what's so ever! It was like a comedy show! No brains girl then apologized but continued to stand by this very odd, prejudice against kid, rule. Yes, she claimed it was a RULE of Fresh Freeze! Fresh Freeze you are losing business. Stopped in to Fresh Freeze after a long day of traveling. The mister and I split a Bacon Cheeseburger, large fries, and egg nog milkshake. Food took over 20 minutes to "arrive" and the burger was silly tiny for the price. Tasty but tiny. I think the bun was an egg bread? Really good. The milkshake was delicious and the fries fresh from the fryer and HOT! It was as expected for an old Drive-In but overpriced in our opinion. This place is only worth 1 1/2 stars but the ice cream side boosts it up to 3. This place is the epitome of a greasy spoon. Burgers are terrible. Chicken strips are ok. Chili cheese frys are less then mediocre and corn dogs are just ok. The hot fudge sundae is pretty good and shakes are good too! But the fact is, they sold me a bag of tasteless fries and a burger about the size and consistency of a McDonald's cheeseburger [the cheapest one on the menu] for a little over 10 dollars. I will not be returning. I should have captured an image of this thing. It was a pathetic, but unfortunately typical example of the fare served up by Eureka's 'finest' establishments. I really like a divey drive-in; even those that go for the faux-50s vibe. This place actually has been here since the 50s but has gussied itself up in a manner that reminds me of Mel's. Anyway, the food's what matters, right? My "deluxe" hamburger patty was pretty crispy and on the smallish side. A little disappointing. The fries were standard. The cones are generous. A classic Eureka spot for soft serve ice cream. Miniature classic model cars line the windows. It's decoration but also art installation as each mini auto is an object to inspect and marvel at the details, for a true gear head any transportation is a diversion. A server friend once told me they have fun competing to see who can successfully dip a towering swirl cone in the hard chocolate coating, which is similar to Magic Shell. Not an easy feat and a lighthearted part of visiting a classic rockabilly feel joint for a dose of frozen Americana and nostalgia. read more

Ok, Ok, it gets 4 stars because this was my childhood burger joint. But there's a very classic pre-McD's burger amalgamation that happens here that still rates! See, my mom and dad would go out to play bridge, to do the inventory at their store, or simply to parties. One of my older brothers - who actually drives log trucks in Humboldt County now just to show you some of my very weird roots - would call up Fresh Freeze and get a couple of Humboldt Specials (these have bacon and a dbl patty), fries (extra crispy), and hot fudge milk shakes. I could never eat it all so he's save the left over burger and fries for his lunch the next day. I've been back many times as an adult and it still remains one of the best simple burger joints around. It's not gourmet but it's got the right greasy drips into soft bun texture that is not easy to accomplish. The fries are mediocre but the burgers are fried on the flat grill and so are the buns. Add their secret mix of chopped onions, lettuce, tomato and some kind of mayo like special sauce (or maybe it's just mayo with burger grease?) and it's a magic bullet for nostalgia and comfort food all at once. Their shakes are a great combination of thick in the middle but liquefied around the edges so you can sip immediately upon receipt. They've 50s kitsched the place up in recent years (which I don't really enjoy), but they still have the crappy orange plastic booths and a line of high school kids waiting for their foot long dogs. read more

I was driving through on business when I found this place on Yelp. It's a diner that opened in the early 50's. I enjoyed the look of the place and was fine with the burgers. They were a little slow getting the food out. but that didn't surprise me since I read reviews on here before I went. If you want a trip into the past and enjoy a good burger with good fries.... i'd say go for it. If you in any hurry.... Pass it up. It's not a place to go if your in a hurry. read more

My friend and I had the bacon cheeseburger and veggie burger and both were delicious. The fries are good as well, and it didn't take overly long to be served. The staff is super friendly. If you're looking for a burger near Henderson center then this is a great choice. Update: I decided to try their corn dogs and was a little disappointed. The breading is a little bland on them. If I could leave 0 starts I would .I travel a lot with my family. We've been here about 6x this year and have had very unpleasant experiences. Every time we been we've walked in and haven't been greeted at all. As soon as we walk in the "manager" (chubby lady always telling other what to do and calling them out in front of everyone)stares us up and down and walks away and acts like she's doing something else. After a couple minutes she greets other people walking in and we're just standing there waiting for her to take our order. She stands at the register and just stares at us. Keep in mind she doesn't say a word to us. My husband looks at me and tells me to order so I do. She still doesn't say a word. I'm like what is going on. We've never disrespected an employee and we get treated to this awful "customer service". People sitting down are laughing at us because they realize what's going on and since they are regulars they obviously think what these employees do is okay, just because they get amazing customer service. Today I was craving a couple things from there and after the awful service I couldn't get anything. It really did make me sad and disrespected that because we're Hispanic we're treated this way. They need to learn to treat everyone with respect and be equal. We're all the same. We come from a middle class family and get looked down upon like we don't have money. Not sure if I'll ever return again since all these experience I've had have made me very emotional and sad. To end this off we have never received a Thank you even though we've left very good tips. I am Humboldt County native and grew up in Eureka I have pick going to the fresh freeze 4 / 50 years in the last few years they have struggled with service even though the Cook's slang up the same awesome food with quality control and it always tasted the same and never disappointed. Especially the Humboldt special and the footlong chili bacon with onions and cheese oh and don't forget the chocolate dipped cone always makes a kid's smile. They have a cook that they've had for a while that is really awesome and she can keep up with a busy crowd and they just recently hired a young girl named Jacey. She is a first counter girl and probably 15 years that is fresh freeze Worthy. Between that cook and JC the place is going to be okay.
