Pad Thai, Vegetable Spring Roll, Rib Rice
    Jennifer N.

This was such a disappointing meal, I'm shocked that anyone would think this food is worthy to served to people. The positive: the restaurant is really cute on the inside. It was lunch time on a weekday and there weren't many people dining, so we were promptly seated. This was the only positive of the meal. The negatives: We ordered three dishes, pad Thai with chicken, rib rice and spring rolls. When the food came out I was so confused. The pad thai was literally a pile of seasoned rice noodles with a layer of boiled green beans, then a layer of tough chicken pieces followed by crushed peanuts covering the whole thing. There was nothing that resembled pad thai. The noodles were oily, and tasted like they were seasoned with fish sauce and that was all. This was not a dish where the ingredients were cooked together. This seemed like a dish where things were literally thrown together on a plate. Next was the rib rice. There was hardly any meat on the ribs. And what meat there was there was dry. The glaze on the ribs was tasty, a nice five spice flavor but that didn't really matter when the ribs were mostly bones. The rice that came with the ribs were awful. Truly the driest rice I've ever had. If you've ever left cooked rice out to dry without covering it, it was like that. Inedible for sure. The carrots and broccoli were boiled and not seasoned. It felt like an afterthought. The spring rolls were awful. The filling was very wet and just not appetizing to eat. All I could taste was ginger and mushy vegetables. The service was sub par. It was not busy when I went. We were the only ones dining inside the restaurant, yet the server was speaking so loud to her co worker on the other side of the restaurant that it was hard to enjoy a meal in peace. Definitely skip this restaurant. There's so many other restaurants in Amherst that would be worth your time and money.

Upon coming here, I ordered the shrimp tea rolls which were unlike any I've ever had but were quiet refreshing compared to fried egg rolls and similar to spring rolls wrapped in rice paper. My friend ordered the rib rice and it was packed with flavor and incredibly tender. Vegetables were a little on the bland side but necessary to complement the meat. I ordered the shrimp Japanese omelette fried rice and was surprised by the amount of flavor in it as well. Towards the end, it was little overbearing as there weren't any side dishes to offset the flavorful rice but was great for leftovers later that night. Overall, very happy with this place.

I've been coming to Fresh side in Amherst for a while. I looooove their tea rolls and that's almost always what I get when I go here. Their tea rolls are so fresh and delicious and are made with the best ingredients (PERFECT for vegetarians and vegans)

First time I've ever had tea rolls, and it certainly won't be the last! I ordered 2pcs each of the seaweed rice roll, the teriyaki chicken roll, and the pad Thai roll; took half home! Great portions for the money. The seaweed roll was my favorite. They roast the seaweed and if you're a lover of that scrumptious ocean plant like me, you'll love it too! We also had the hibiscus sangria- perfect concoction to bring out the best of the spring season.

At the time of this posting, the menu here was very limited with a few Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese selections including noodle dishes, rice bowls, fried rice, soup, fried appetizers, pupu platter, and cold drinks. The menu plans to be expanded including combination platters. I stopped by The White Lotus very recently for takeout after placing an online order via Clover. My order was ready within 10 minutes. I ordered the Cambodian Beef Lok Lak Rice Bowl ($15.99 plus tax) and a small order of Pork/Shrimp Egg Rolls (4 for $4,99 plus tax). The Cambodian Beef Lok Lak Rice Bowl had tender grilled pieces of marinated beef steak, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, lime & black pepper sauce over soft white rice. This bowl was a great choice and the beef had nice flavors. The 4 egg rolls were actually like spring rolls, very crispy with shredded cabbage, carrot, ground pork/shrimp, very greasy though. I would return here when the menu is expanded and more combination platters besides appetizer platters are offered.

Opened in December of'24 where China Maxim formerly was, The White Lotus offers Asian cuisine that differs from what we've become expect from a "standard Chinese" restaurant. Crab Rangoon - soft pillows with crispy edges hold a delicious filling that has the right amount of filling and texture. A little hint of sherry (?) give them a delicious flavor Chicken Wings - initially cooked like a traditional style (for around here anyway) but then tossed in a delicious light sauce. Get these! Lotus Fried Rice - like a house fried rice but with Chinese sausage (lap-xuong). I found this delicious and packed with non-rice ingredients.

The green papaya salad was strange had different (more) spices than most places. It's a dish I make at home several times a year and order out often. Tim thought it tasted more like kimchi... The shrimp we added were the best part. The Thom Kha was inedible, strangely salty, coconut milk separated and grainy, it tasted as strange as it looked. Thehicken had an odd texture. We sent it back and it was offered to be taken off the bill. It didn't taste like any other Thom kha I've ever eaten. The green curry chicken had good flavor, the veggies were cooked nicely, but the chicken again had an odd texture not sure if there coating it in something like cornstarch before the typical poach? Rice served with it was mushy and really unappealing. The food was expensive for what it was. Around $20 a dish and honestly the food was not something I would order again. The service was on top of it, and that made it 3 stars. It has really good reviews. I don't know if we ordered wrong? I should have noted the Pan Asian description as a warning But meh

Started with edamame which was generously salted, and salted again for good measure. Beans were cooked well. Tried the Tom Kha which looked nice but was pretty bland and seemed to be missing some zing, lemongrass? Tom Yum was better but also missing some tartness. Tried the green papaya salad which seemed to have all the elements (don't always see the tiny dried shrimps) but was also generously salted, almost inedible. Tried the Pad Thai which was so-so. The atmosphere is excellent: lots of natural light, brick walls, plants, light woods, stainless steel. Sound travels softly, so other conversations rarely interrupt your own thoughts or discussions. Music is usually low-volume and unobtrusive. The coffee is high quality. Baristas steam milk properly, pull good espresso, and clearly know their craft. My fiancé is a tea nerd and admits their selection and brew process are both superb. Pastries are good, though not something I actively seek out. Their original cocktails are inventive while still accessible, and they'll happily make most classics at market price. Beer on tap is local and consistently solid. Prices are certainly on the higher side, especially for coffee drinks and original cocktails. That said, I've never felt cheated by what I received. Still, there are occasional moments where friends look down at an iced latte and do a double take at the money that just left their bank account Their Service is great in my opinion. I've had the pleasure of becoming a regular for some of the evening crew. I couldn't find anything to comment on, they are attentive, patient, and clearly enjoy their craft. And watching them work is inspiring during some rushes. I like to try to get work done here, but it's not the most accessible place for that, and I imagine that's partly on purpose. Regardless of time of day or day of week, there is no guest WiFi; I'm unsure if it's a logistic issue, as I know their own POS WiFi is finicky at times, or perhaps they simply don't want to provide it. Nevertheless, if you want to work online, you will need to have a hotspot or equivalent. There aren't many wall outlets, so ensure your devices are charged if you want to camp. But that's okay! At its core, Amco feels more like a gathering space than a work cafe: somewhere to converse, debate, celebrate, drink good coffee or cocktails, and spend time with people. It's also a great place to bring a physical book, journal, or board game. The nights can be unpredictable in the best way. Sometimes there's live jazz, sometimes a special event takes over half the bar, and sometimes it's nearly empty and you end up having an excellent conversation with the bartender about this or that. Either way I'm always satisfied, and I imagine you would be too.
