Had to try Friedman's of NYC; one of many in the city. Came here during brunch on a Friday. Place is big for big groups. Has a full bar as well for dinner. Definitely, only street parking or garage parking near by but good luck having a car in the city. We didn't have to wait and staff was nice. We had their cappuccino and latte. Latte was better then cappuccino as it felt a little watered down. I ordered their French Toast but was not impressed. The size was good and bread was moist but why smother it with strawberry jam on top with a few pieces of fresh strawberries? I would have preferred just all fresh strawberries and whipped cream but that's just me. The tomato soup bowl was very good and served super hot! It stayed hot for a long time. The Brick Chicken was great! It was moist. The brussel sprouts and potatoes was a good combo and good flavors . It did take 20 min which they warned us. Loved this restaurant! The ambiance, service, and especially the food. I left soooo full and happy with plenty energy for a long bike ride at Central Park. I ordered the chicken & waffles with a decaf coffee and yummmmy I was a tad worried about the "cheddar" waffle but I requested powdered sugar on the side and didn't taste cheddar at all. I think their fried chicken was the best I've had, the skin was crisp. The waffle was cooked perfectly, soft with crisp to it. Everything was delicious, highly recommend. The price I personally feel was on the higher end however - but I'm visiting New York and it seems everything around here is 20$+ for food. read more

The tomato sauce is hardly flavored; the tomato flavor is barely comes through, so when you try to dip your bread in to catch some of the sauce, it just drips off. The jalapenos are a bit rubbery in texture, and don't add to the flavor of the dish, but are rather confusing as to why their presence is there, like an unwelcome guest at a party. The eggs are the only part done somewhat-right, and even then they were bland and unassuming. The nova benny was...not appetizing. The egg was poached, but was rubbery in texture in the tendrils of the egg white wrapping around the yolk. The kale was chewy, tough, and bitter. The bread holding it all together at the bottom was both soggy yet hard. The salmon was chewy and a bit hard to cut through. The only redeeming part of the meal were the drinks. While standard, the cappuccino was hot and frothy. The figging kidding was a bit sour, a bit sweet, and refreshing. read more

Great place for breakfast! We walked in and there wasn't a wait. After ordering, the food came out super fast! I am on a pancake binge while eating breakfast out lately and these did not disappoint. You can also ask for the blueberry compote on the side if you'd rather. The pancakes were fluffy and well portioned. My daughter had the Eggs with Style, over easy with Turkey bacon and the potato hash, multigrain toast. I wanted to steal her potatoes! She enjoyed her hearty breakfast with the eggs cooked just as she liked them. My son opted for lunch instead and ordered the French Dip on a toasted roll with herb fries and Au jus (comes unstrained, so was pretty juicy). He was pretty quiet while eating and said it was really good, not too salty and the roast beef was tender. He *almost* couldn't finish but powered through! He's eaten a lot of French Dips in his relatively short 23 years on the planet and so I'd consider his as a great choice. The restaurant is pretty lively with s full bar open at all times, I was tempted with a mimosa but we were going to a matinee and I was going to have a cocktail then. Our server Rodney was very friendly and personable, checked on us frequently, and even suggested we return for dinner when there is singing! This place was very okay. I found myself being underwhelmed with the food and ambiance here. I came here with my sister before we went on a bus tour of NYC. I chose this place because it had good reviews and a very option-full menu. It's important to note this particular Friedman's location is inside the Edison Hotel - this could be why the seating was all extremely close to one another. My sister and I felt like we were basically sitting at the same table with the couple sitting next to us, even though the restaurant/lobby itself was not small. The wait was long, too - about 30 minutes. Our server was very nice, but he didn't come around often. I don't blame him, though, since the place looked filled. My sister ordered the shakshuka and I got the blueberry compote pancakes and Greek yogurt with house-made granola and berries on the side. The blueberry compote pancakes were kind of bland, and the syrup wasn't very sweet. The Greek yogurt was a little too sour and honestly just kind of bland, too. My sister didn't really enjoy her shakshuka either. This was a good stop for dinner before a show. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. We got the Famous French Dip sandwich which was great, and the soup was perfect for a cold day. We also got the Breakfast burger, which was an average burger. For sides we got the fries and vinegar chips. The fries were amazing and I would recommend going with these over the vinegar chips, which fell flat for us. We got two seasonal drinks, the Winter Breeze and the Spiked Coco, which were both tasty but very strong. Gluten Free: A majority of the menu can be made gluten free and there are lots of options. Everything on the menu is marked if it is naturally gluten free or can be prepared gluten free, which is very helpful. I was disappointed when the waiter told us that the fried chicken is not safe as it shares a frier, even though on the menu it says it is available gluten free. All gluten free meals come with an allergy flag, however one of our meals did not come with the flag. After asking the waiter we found out that meal was not made gluten free and they took it away and brought us one prepared correctly. The waiter was apologetic and made sure we were confident in the safety of the food we got. Overall I felt comfortable eating here and would recommend. read more

The rainbow bowl almost breaks my jaw, because the vegetables were too crunchy. Besides the tofu, everything else was super difficult to chew. My face hurts so hard the next day. Waffle & Chicken was not good. I heard it tasted like old leftover oil. The chai latte was delicious & the orange juice was not bad. The service was friendly and fast. The room was beautiful. Five of us met before a theatre outing. We saw that they had singing servers but it didn't register how awful that would be. It was so loud that conversation was impossible. I had the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich. I asked for the bacon jam that came with another sandwich in place of the aioli. It was ok. It looked like there were 2 pieces of meat, but one seemed to be deep fried skin, which was inedible. Fries were seriously salty. Not good. Not worth $24. Everyone else felt the same. They add 5% "entertainment" charge to the bill AND have the nerve to pass a hat while you're eating. If you have kids and aren't taking them to a Broadway show, this might be nice. If you're a New Yorker looking for a pre-theatre meal, look elsewhere. read more

This was my second visit here and I was probably even happier with my food than I was on my previous visit. I remember still being hungry as I left last time, so I ordered the tomato soup to supplement my benny. I found myself really stuffed and struggling to finish this time! The nova benny was great, the latkes weren't greasy and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I am a tomato soup fanatic and it was absolutely delicious here. I can't forget the dirty chai, which was not too sweet (which I appreciated). The service was pretty prompt, although it was very busy in there. We got our drinks and food pretty quickly but it was a bit of a struggle to get water or coffee refills (they did come around eventually for what it's worth to refill my husband's coffee). That being said, the service wasn't bad and the servers were pleasant, despite the fact that they were running around trying to keep up with all of their tables. The restaurant itself is very nice with high ceilings and dramatic columns throughout the dining room. The tables are pretty close together but not uncomfortably so. I love that this is a safe haven for those of us with gluten sensitivities and that everything is labeled so I don't have to worry about asking about every menu item! I have a friend who has celiac disease and we decided to go to New York for her bachelorette trip. It was really important that we got food that she could eat throughout the entire trip and we only looked at gluten-free places. Friedman's was one of the first places that we wanted to try and we decided to go for brunch. she got the chicken and waffles and wow was it delicious. A benefit of going to Friedman's is the fact that you don't have to eat gluten-free necessarily if you do not want to for example you don't have to get gluten-free bread for a grilled cheese. We were able to get gluten-free potstickers which she loved. The service was great but it was extremely busy inside. It was beautiful inside though and the walls have great detailing. This is my first experience at Friedman's. This place is a must on the nights servers sing. They were all amazing and are without a doubt equal to any broadway singers. The singers made the evening. It does get loud when they sing so this place is not the place to go if you want to have an involved conversation. There are breaks in between singers, giving you a chance to talk with your dining companions about just how awesome an experience you are having. On to the food... I was so very much looking forward to to having the "famous" French dip. Perhaps it was an off night but some of the other people eating with me also had the French dip and were similarly not impressed. Potato cake should be golden brown, not crisp, dry & dark. Did I mention food is unseasoned, not even warm, almost as if the food sat out for a while. My thick bacon was beyond biting, or crisp you chew the bacon forever, nasty old & cold, did not finish, not sure of my dog would even eat if he were here.
