Food! I wouldn't call it food, have had hospital food better than this. Ambience why everyone comes here, location, holiday music & decor. Table sizes are nice for 2. Service was good, kind of got push back when I asked for substitution, with excuse of kitchen is busy. It's a restaurant learn to manage the surge. Potato cake should be golden brown, not crisp, dry & dark. Did I mention food is unseasoned, not even warm, almost as if the food sat out for a while. My thick bacon was beyond biting, or crisp you chew the bacon forever, nasty old & cold, did not finish, not sure of my dog would even eat if he were here. Poached eggs were perfectly cooked texture & firmness, that's it, definitely not hot. Sauce all I can say is no flavor, but color was nice. The only good thing I can say was the hot chocolate. Ok initially went in because it was close to my hotel I don't normally stay in times square... I have to say I went there for the entertainment and fun. I wanted breakfast for dinner and it was good the kale was in a little salty side but the eggs and the salmon and the potato pancakes were at amazing. The more fool me for trying one more time. It's still a miserable experience, now with actual dining hazards. The pseudo Ellen's Stardust Diner act is now apparently every night and so insanely loud the waiter missed a food allergy note and my order had to be remade so I could eat. While waiting for that to happen, we noticed that the dining room was nearly empty, pre-theater on a Tuesday night. Our server admitted to us that tons of people complain about the volume and the "show." We also learned the group is pay-to-play, which is sad and strange. Either they're paying an absolute fortune, or Friedmans is actively looking to lose money at this location by driving diners away. Whatever the rationale, it's beyond bizarre to witness. My watch dinged constantly to alert me of the harmful noise level and Times Square, pre theater, was quieter than the restaurant we quickly fled. I mean as I type this maybe you do want to check it out? It's the kind of thing one has to see to believe. But for the sake of your hearing, wear earplugs. read more

An incredibly busy restaurant in a bustling hotel just off Times Square. Reservations recommended! I had a business breakfast there. Service was fast and efficient. Worst I can say is no dish was supplied for my tea bag, so we had to request one. I had the French toast, which was quite good, especially for gluten free bread! The berries were great. I got eggs, hash browns, toast, and turkey bacon. You really can't go wrong with that, as they are the most basic of breakfast foods. Given that, I was pleased with my meal. I was specific about not wanting over-scrambled eggs and thankfully they heeded that. The price tag on this breakfast was almost $20, which seems a bit ridiculous to me, but we were eating mere steps from Time Square, so I guess I understand the markup. Anywhere else, this breakfast is maybe $10. The others in our group seemed to enjoy their food, and the peach Bellini I had, though expensive, was nice. DO NOT EAT HERE. I wanted to enjoy this place, we were seated fairly quickly which was great, sadly it was incredibly downhill from there. The food was horrible, despite the bagels being 25 dollars, I wouldn't even pay 3 dollars for their over-salted mess. The sandwiches lacked presentation. If I wanted to eat plain bread and unseasoned meat I could've went to Petsmart. We were seated at the very back, facing the open kitchen with no doors. Such poor taste to seat guests there like sardines. The ac was broken and the heat from the kitchen made for an uncomfortable dining experience. AND FINALLY. When we attempted to make a suggestion to management to ensure future guests a better dining experience. We were met with attitude. Came by for breakfast the other day and it was definitely a pricey tourist trap. Located inside the Edison hotel, we were seated within 10 minutes of arrival. The restaurant itself is quite exquisite with tremendous detail and super high ceilings. Ordered the Nova Benny and it was mediocre at best. The hashed potato cake seemed pre-fried and a touch cold. The smoked salmon was quite salty. The poached eggs were okay and the hollandaise sauce was decent. Our first entree was lemon ricotta pancakes. They were heavy and dry so we sent them back. Our waiter said they were gluten free, by way of explanation. I hadn't realized, but sure enough in letters half the size of the letters describing the various pancakes, it said "gluten free" written below the other descriptions. If gluten free doesn't provide the taste and texture I am looking for, then make it optional. So we settled for 2 sandwiches. One was turkey, avocado, pepper jack, and the other was grilled chicken, with gruyere. Both were excellent, and left me torn whether to give them a 3 or a 4. I went with the lower number because even though this is NYC, most choices were around $20, and I think that's too high. read more

I really liked the experience (singing was amazing) and GF options at Friedmans so it's a shame I have to write this review. I got horrible food poisoning after eating at Friedman's on Friday. They need to take better precautions since in my mind this is unacceptable, especially for a place that also has to have extra precautions in place for the gluten free options. They also forgot my friends tag that labeled her meal as "gluten free" which they claim on the menu should not happen. read more

First and second time dining at Friedman's, this one is located at the Hotel Edison near Times Square, where I was staying for a couple of nights while in the city. I've never been to a Friedman's but there are several locations scattered around NYC. I came here first for dinner and had their signature Friedman's Burger, angus beef and fries. Service was great, served quickly. And the burger was delish. They also had an area where singers were performing Broadway songs at the other half of the restaurant. Definitely great entertainment for the evening and fit the vibe of the restaurant. The next morning I had breakfast here. I had French toast which was soo good! Don't eat here! At first, was excited because called and was told breakfast served until 4pm. We got there at 11am, and waited around 30 minutes for a table. No problem. Don't even ask, it was worst than salted cardboard. Dry and no taste at all!! How can you run out of bacon when that is the only other meat selection on the menu?!? If I ordered a BLT, would I only get an LT? What about the pancakes? Again, very pretty, but again no taste, dry, blueberries, tasteless, a small container of watered down corn syrup. So I've been here twice now. Each time I enjoy my food but there's always little things that happen that put a damper on my experience. The first time I came, I asked for the Mac and cheese instead of fries. They forgot about the Mac and cheese and by the time I actually got it, everyone else in my party already finished eating. However, the Mac and cheese was so yummy! My main meal was the turkey burger which I found bland. The second time, everyone in my party received their meal, and then mine didn't show up for five minutes after everyone else's. But again, the chicken sandwich I had (pictured) was so good, I would totally order it again... and again. The bacon jam was delightful. They don't take reservations and will only seat you if your party is there fully. So take that into consideration. They also have a pretty prime location in Times Square close to multiple theaters, so it's a nice option for a pre show dinner. The bathroom situation is strange. The restaurant is connected to a hotel and you have to use the hotel lobby bathrooms. The bathrooms are always crowded and messy (they are also super small). For years I've heard rave reviews on celiac travel pages about Friedman's in NYC. I perused the menu, paralyzed by the possibilities. I changed my mind 10 times before I actually was walking in the door. On a cold, rainy, winter day, there was nothing more enticing than a grilled cheese coupled with tomato soup and sweet potato fries. Every bite was satisfying. This can't possibly be the gluten free plate, I thought to myself as the flavors danced their way through my digestive tract. I never thought I'd be so happy to sit and enjoy a grilled cheese with such wonderful company my cousins. Ambiance, while busy was still quiet enough to not feel disturbed by your neighbor's stories (or chewing!) clean and well maintained. So, I enjoyed my meal, but the people I was with didn't and I'll tell you why. The meal took a long time to come and my wife's was about five minutes later than the rest of ours. I think it's important to bring out everything at once, so we eat together. They didn't. That in and of itself wasn't a big deal. However, the pancakes were terrible. Two in our party couldn't even cut through them. We did tell the waitress who, at first didn't understand us, then said she would have to take the whole meal away and couldn't just bring us edible pancakes (the pancakes were one part of a bigger plate.). That didn't make sense and we didn't want to wait another twenty minutes for them to bring another plate. The waitress didn't even say she was sorry, but I think that was a language issue. She wouldn't get the manager either. Again, that could have been the language. Came here with high expectations, as I've been to other locations for brunch, but ended up being pretty disappointed with the overall experience (contrary to my positive opinions about the other locations). Both the food and service were really subpar. 1/3 of the menu wasn't available the day we came in and our food took ~1 hr to arrive. The part that shocked me the most was that after ordering, our waiter stopped by our table to ask us what was in the Shakshuka we ordered... and we had to point at their menu to explain. Sort of strange? Anyways, here's what we ordered: - Shakshuka - the sauce tasted like it was served straight out of a salsa can and the dish was way too salty overall. It was pretty much inedible. - Fried Chicken Sandwich - felt like I was eating mostly batter with barely any meat. Fries were fine.
