So I make okonomiyaki once a month at home... I thought it'd be interesting to go to a place that specializes in it. I made reservations through Yelp for lunch and came here with the BF to check it out - it's in a small plaza next to the Jiffy Lube. The parking lot is pretty tight and we had some difficulty parking.
The place itself is small but cute - it should be noted that the griddles are not for cooking your okonomiyaki, but rather for keeping it warm once served. There's a guy in the back who works away at frying batches to be served. The tables have okonomiyaki sauce and seaweed flakes that can be used on your orders.
My boyfriend and I got the following:
- Pork Okonomiyaki Lunch Combo w/ Beef Gyudon: Wanted to try just a normal okonomiyaki for comparison to my homemade was. It was surprisingly good, and the portion was so big! Adding the seaweed flakes gave it a nice savory taste with the mild fried cabbage. The pork added its own flavor and the okonomiyaki sauce tied it all together. Their gyudon was actually a surprise - despite what little meat there was, the rice was incredibly flavorful from the broth/sauce! It was very meaty and delicious.
- Green Onion Mondonyaki: This is a little like the pork okonomiyaki done Hiroshima style, as there is a layer of noodles and egg, topped with green onions. However, instead of the yakisoba noodles you see in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, they use some kind chewy rice noodle that gives the okonomiyaki layer a nice bite. The flavor is a lot like the regular pork okonomiyaki, except the noodles and fried egg add more substance, making it super tasty. The pile of green onions also made for a refreshing topping. This option is only available during lunch.
Overall the food is actually really good. The portions here were quite big and filling, so I thought it was worth what I paid for. I was skeptical given the reviews about the lack of meat and flavor... but I thought it was actually tasty. There was enough pork in both of them that I did not feel ripped off of shredded cabbage. I think the key is to add the seaweed flakes - they add a lot of flavor to the sauce and cabbage. My homemade version is more elaborate with the toppings, but I was impressed that their basic pork okonomiyaki was so tasty. I think having it cooked/kept warm on a hot griddle makes a big difference.
During lunch eat set comes with miso soup and salad. These are nothing special as the salad is incredibly generic with a sour dressing and the miso soup is muddled in flavor and consistency. They'd really benefit from providing a sesame or ginger dressing with their salad instead.
Service is weird here... which is why I am docking a star. When we came here during lunch, there seemed to be only 1 guy serving/seating tables, and he wasn't very efficient. For example, he'd go fill up one table's water... but instead of walking around to see if anyone else needed water, he'd just put it straight away and do some other task. Thus our waters never got filled when everyone else would flag him down for water.
At some point people were waiting to be seated, yet there were a few uncleaned tables available. Other people were still waiting to pay their bill - one lady even went up to the front to get her billed paid. When getting a togo box, it took awhile to get our server's attention and we even had to assist the other table to get their togo box request! We were fine since we weren't in a hurry... but during lunch, service should be more quicker and efficient, given that people might be taking a work lunch break.
I'll have to try coming during dinner, as their lunch menu was limited to only pork okonomiyaki. Good to try the basics though! read more
