Heard of this place from a friend so went for lunch to try it out. We got there right when it opened and was seated so after. Each table has a heated griddle and cute little spatulas. So atmosphere was nice. Got busy closer to noon, so glad we went early. We ordered: 1) Seafood Garlic Rice Set - served on a hot plate. Very good and liked how the rice soaked up all the goodness. Fugetsu finally opened on Nov. 11, 2016 next door to 99 Chicken (they still have their "coming soon" sign on the door though). This is their 1st location in the USA. The parking lot for this plaza is fairly limited so parking can be difficult at times. No outdoor seating. Our Order 11/15/2016 Chanpon Yakisoba: ($18.50) Large. Squid, prawn, pork, beef, cabbage, egg Cheetama-buta (modan): ($16.95) Pork modanyaki w/ melted cheese & egg. Light mayo. Fugetsuyaki (modan): ($19.95) "everything" okonomiyaki (squid, prawn, pork, beef). Light mayo. Luckily, I was able to snag reservations and didn't have to wait. For reservations, you do have to arrive 15min prior will all parties present in order to be seated. It is recommended to order some a la carte items while waiting for okonomiyaki/yakisoba orders since they take about 20min. We really enjoyed the squid & butter corn and would recommend ordering. $4 for the kimchi wasn't really worth it as the portion size was a little small and the pickled cucumber was very lightly pickled. The yakisoba was on the dry side and pretty much tasted like chow mein. The okonomiyaki & modanyaki tasted almost all the same and consisted mostly of cabbage. The few pieces of shrimp & meat that was included were very small and over-cooked. I believe the meat became overcooked because the food isn't cooked in front of you (even though you have a griddle at the table). The food is made-to-order at the large griddle by the chef and then placed onto your table griddles to stay warm. The griddles were too warm tho (I lowered/turned off the griddles eventually) and kept cooking the dishes (also making them stick to the griddle often). Service was great (and why I feel bad for a 3-star review). Food came out fairly quickly and drinks constantly refilled. Seeing how there's not that many places that sells okonomiyaki in the area, there's not too much competition. However, if you want to rate their okonomiyaki to others in JPN, they're not as good as the places we've gone in JPN. For the price, I don't feel that it was worth it so we probably wouldn't go back. I'm so excited to write this review. For years, I have longed for a great Okonomiyaki restaurant to open in Silicon Valley. Finally it is happened. Fugetsu is completely legit. I lived in Osaka for nearly 3 years. Delicious okonomiyaki was something I ate every week. In fact, I lived in Morinimiya, just two train stations away from Tsuruhashi, the place that is named in Fugetsu. And this place really makes it the way it's made in Osaka. We ordered ika buta modan, yaki onigiri and kimchi. All were perfect. I can't wait to come back to this great place and I'm so grateful to the owners for setting it up. Tried a couple of the Okonomiyakis, yakisoba here as well as some appetizers, on a couple of occasions. Enjoyed both times, though the pancakes weren't very filling. Staff is great and ambience pretty cool. One of the servers also taught my mom how to use chopsticks, it was lovely to see both of them try to understand each other. Authentic modern Japanese cuisine at its finest! Fugetsu specializes in two peasant dishes -Okonomiyaki and Yakisoba - fulfilling dishes that traditionally was made to stretch out meat and seafood in poor areas (the Japanese equivalent of say, corned beef, or a Po' boy sandwich). Traditionally, cabbage and noodles are mixed in with leftover meat to stretch out meal. However, there is nothing leftover-ish about these dishes - they have been lifted up to be culinary masterpieces! The Yakisoba had thick noodles that were both chewy and crispy, and the sauce very bold. The okonomiyaki (a Japanese savory pancake) had the perfect structure and round shape - the top and bottom very crispy and the inside moist and gooey! The sauce was not like any sauce I have had - a pleasant surprise. There was a special flavor in there that kicked it up a notch, but one that I could not readily identify. I highly suggest making a reservation to get in. We lucked out this evening at opening to be able to get a bar seat - all the rest of the dining tables were reserved - and the line behind us grew by the minute! read more

Not terrible, but definitely not the 4 star hype that brought me in. We ordered some edamame...I don't think I've ever been so disappointed with edamame. It had obviously been steamed hours ago and inside the shells was just pure mush. We ordered their special combo soba and the limited uni dish. The uni dish was alright, you could tell the uni was decent quality, but not high end sushi grade. The soba though was bland, there was nothing that jumped off the plate. Service was alright, it took about an hour before we even got the edamame. Maybe about 30 minutes for drinks. I probably won't go back. read more

really solid food! now im not exactly the biggest fan of okonomiyaki, but this place definitely does it better than most places, with the grill being right in front of you. we got a tofu appetizer to start. i forgot what its called but its the classic tofu with bonito flakes and sauce. its pretty solid. we ordered okonomiyaki which was what they were known for. my friend really enjoyed it and it definitely tasted solid. there was a solid mix of veggies and meats in it which i appreciated. the spatulas provided were really helpful in cutting up the pancake itself. we got chanpon yakisoba too, which was really good! the noodles were super chewy and flavorful, and the mixed ingredients bring a different taste with each bite. it is served on foil, which is placed on the grill so it continues cooking , so be careful not to burn it too much. the sauce was also really great and complimented the noodles well. honestly if i had to get only one thing on the menu, this would be it. overall would come again, especially for those nice chewy noodles. yum!!! read more

Pros - Okonomiyaki is good size and the concept is definitely new to California/bay area. Cons - It takes ~20 minutes for okonomiyaki to be prepared and although there are some good small side dishes are starter dishes, it takes away my overall appetite for the main course. The yaki soba tasted more like seafood chowmein with extra sauce. It's a cute little place and good for a nice long dinner with friends if you have the time, but expect a wait. Great concept, but make sure they don't over cook simple things like the butter corn. read more

The fried rice has a very strong garlic flavor which I prefer very much. the Fugetsuyaki has multiple layers and you can taste all of them with every single bite. Stumbled upon this for a celebration dinner for my dad's promotion. It was an amazing choice! 99.9% of the menu - drinks, ingredients, etc - are imported from Japan. The only thing not imported are the soba noodles but they have them MADE in a noodle factory that is local!! Amazing!!! It's very authentic and the owner is very patient to explain everything and how it works. The okonomiyaki is cooked by a chef from Japan in a particular way that all flavors are incorporated and come out naturally. Warning: art like this food TAKES TIME!! It takes about 20 minutes but that's okay because there are many small plates to order to munch on while waiting. We LOVED the pork belly and green onions. Newly opened - just a year old. Service is great, food is beyond excellent, and the experience is authentic. A must go! A lot of Japanese places in the bay have okonomiyaki as an appetizer or side dish but this place centers the dish as the main item. One is definitely good for 2-3 people who have had small plates to begin with. Granted, our family ordered 3 and still was able to finish them because it was just that good. Definitely coming back. Also, order the sake! If you don't finish your bottle, they hold it under your name for 30 days and you can come in again to drink the rest! read more

The food is all Osaka-style, featuring Okonomiyaki (a cabbage-filled pancake with meaty toppings, and even yakisoba noodles and egg if you so choose). The staff is courteous as can be, too! I have it one star for charging us 18% gratuity without letting us know ahead of time. We are using a regular four seats table for three adults and two children, total 5. I have been to many restaurants and never seen 18% or 20% tips charged with bill for party less than 6. If they do that, they should post it somewhere. Food is ok. Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savory style pancake made with a flour batter, shredded cabbage, green onions, some type of meat(depending what kind you get ie: pork belly, squid, octopus, shrimp, or vegetables), and topped off with okonomiyaki sauce (think of Worcestershire sauce) originated from Osaka, Japan. Worth the one time gimmick of a visit, but not worth waiting for an already prepared pancake brought over thirty minutes after ordering to sit on a hot plate to stay warm. Ordered the original and kimchi okonomiyaki to try since kimchi on Japanese dishes have been popular. The kimchi was unappetizingly warm and a different temperate from the batter; the amount of sauce on the okonomiyaki tasted like a slather of salt paste that overpowered all other flavors. The meal was unimpressive as everything ordered either tasted salty or had a soggy texture. Regrettably, I tried some of the cocktails to quench my thirst from the salt lick pie. The drinks tasted water downed with an the abundant use of ice. A mediocre drink to pair with a mediocre meal. At least the pairings on the menu is accurate. There were several flavors available, but the false advertisement should correct its menu to "alcohol flavored water on ice" because once the drink is made, the flavor of whatever fruit is already lost once it arrives to the table. The decor was clean, but staff continuously sat down with other staff members to converse. It was a slow night, but it was difficult to even get the bill due to their disinterest in being there. Would give it one star, but the bathroom was decent and modern. Overall, greatly disappointing for one of the first okonomiyaki restaurants in this area. read more

I wanted to love this place. Great idea. Made a 645 reservation got seated at 730. That's a bit much. Ordered our food took 30 mins for yakisoba and pancakes. To me that seems long. Only one chef on a Saturday night. I ordered a uni pancake. No where did it say it had shrimp. Damn allergy. They can custom make. But I had to wait another 30 mins. I don't know I am just not feeling it as the rest of my party has finished their food and min is still not here as I write this. We will see if I can get over this and come back. read more

Okonomiyaki is my favorite food from Japan and I've been waiting for a place like this to pop up in the Bay Area. Finally a chain based out of Osaka decided to open their very first US location a few miles from where I work. Food and service are both great. It takes a little time, but this isn't a fast type of food. It's a relax with friends or family type of food. So if you like Kansai food or if you're new to it but are down to try some really tasty new dishes, please check this place out. I hope they stick around for a long time so I have a Okonomiyaki fix for years to come! :) read more

Fugetsu is located inside of Rokko Japanese Restaurant; more accurately, I think Rokko just also serves Fugetsu's menu now because the waitlist / reservation system is the same, and you can order from both menus. I ordered the deluxe okonomiyaki and my partner got the seared hamachi bowl. I haven't had too many okonomiyakis in my life, but thought that the one I ordered was delicious! It was crispy-ish, packed with various seafoods (most prominently shrimp and squid I believe), tons of cabbage (which I love), and topped with a fried egg with runny yolk! It was a bit smaller than I expected, but I still had a bit left to take home after eating. The seared hamachi bowl was also quite good, with most of the sauce/wasabi flavor in the rice itself rather than on the fish or on the side; the only thing that I didn't like was that there was a bunch of raw onion included in the bowl which wasn't stated in the menu, and we're onion haters in this relationship (sorry not sorry). Overall, I would come back here, and I'm excited to try the grocery-style location in San Jose, especially since there's also onigiri there! read more

Something different from your normal Japanese restaurant but so worth it! We went here on our last night in SF and my sis in law took us here. I started off with the grilled oysters which were amazing! And then we had the pork yakisoba as well as the okonomiyaki. Both were different from what we were used to when going to a Japanese restaurant but it was worth it! Definitely recommend checking this place out. read more
