Full disclosure: I have not yet been to Japan, so this review is based solely on the taste/quality of the food rather than any commentary about its authenticity.
I honestly have to say I was actually quite disappointed when I came here last Tuesday (12/19/17) for lunch with my parents (who agree with the rating). I'd heard about this place from a friend, who'd said this place was from Japan, and based on many of the reviews here, it sounded like the food tasted pretty close to authentic, so I was originally quite excited to try it since I've been wanting to try okonomiyaki since my Ranma 1/2 reading days back in middle school, and I also wanted to know what real yakisoba tasted like (having only had the Costco version before). Unfortunately, we were rather underwhelmed by the dishes we ordered:
Lunch Special Combo ($12.95) - Pork Yakisoba + Mini Beef Udon
The salad was not bad - pretty standard Japanese fare, but at least all the ingredients were fresh, and the dressing wasn't overpowering. The pork yakisoba came out first, and well... it was ok flavor-wise, but it just seemed very close to a Chinese fried noodle dish, and the cabbage pieces I felt were chopped in too-large square pieces that didn't exactly integrate well into the dish. I'd thought yakisoba noodles were supposed to be a bit thinner, and of a different caliber/type of ingredient or something, and the flavoring just seemed mostly from store-bought sauce. The same was true of the mini beef udon - I thought the beef and the udon were fairly good, but the broth just tasted like they came from store-bought sauces (i.e. soba or tempura dipping sauces) rather than home-made stock, so it ended up a little too sweet/concentrated and processed-tasting. I hope I'm wrong about that, but that's what it tasted like to us.
Uni Yaki Onigiri (Grilled rice ball with sea urchin) ($7.50)
I was curious about trying this one as I'd never tried uni (sea urchin gonads) before, and I've heard them described as "buttery" in texture and a delicious delicacy. I can't comment on the level of freshness as I've never had it before, and this is likely no fault of the restaurant, but it just wasn't really my thing. The uni actually was quite smooth and somewhat squishy in texture, and did certainly have a rich flavor to it. However, the aftertaste was quite strong and a bit pungent to me, so it was difficult to finish. I will say that it definitely goes better with the rice than on it's own, so that pairing is nice, and the grilled rice itself was actually really good - warm and with a satisfying light crunch on the outside where it was grilled just right. So 5/5 for the grilled rice ball part of the onigiri, and for the freshness of the finely sliced green onions.
Negi Tsukimi-Tama ($11.95)
I believe I read another review on here after our excursion that said something like "Pork Okonomiyaki - but where is the pork?" That was pretty much our question, since based on the picture in the menu of the regular pork okonomiyaki, it looked like there was a large piece of pork over the okonomiyaki, covered in sauce. Our confusion was such that we'd thought perhaps we'd accidentally ordered a dish with egg and green onion over it, sans meat. But no, the waitress explained, the pork was actually in small pieces inside the okonomiyaki, and we dug around for a bit and indeed, there was a few small pieces of pork that could be fished out. However, overall, this dish was kind of disappointing. The cabbage chopped a little on the larger side, and as stated above, there is minimal pork in the dish. The brown sauce was a tad on the sweet side but maybe ok, but the mayonnaise flavoring was too strong and overpowered the dish as a whole. I can't actually remember too much about the egg, but I think that was cooked ok.
Seafood Garlic Rice Set Meal ($13.50)
Standard fare and decent taste, but again, tasted a little too much like Chinese cooking than I would have expected, and again with the large, roughly-chopped cabbage bits. I will say they did grill the seafood in it decently well though, with decent flavoring, and the salmon roe on top was a nice touch. I didn't try the miso soup, but according to my parents, it was a bit too heavy on the salt.
So overall, food-wise, we were kind of disappointed, and the portion sizes relative to the cost were on the smaller side. The server however, was very nice and attentive, as was the general atmosphere (one of the chefs greeted us as we came in), the water was fresh and clean, and the food was still decent overall, bringing the total rating for this restaurant up to 3/5. read more
