Mackerel is an oily fish but it was still just right. They serve a really wonderful tea when you sit down that's Smokey and really warmly energizing. I saw a number of my yfs had reviewed this place, so I said I need to hit it! Fukagawa is on Redondo Beach Blvd in Gardena, just east of Western. Its hard to find, but as you are facing Marukai, its located deep in the right hand corner of the mall. BTW, Fukagawa opens at 7 am, but is closed on Wed (?). They specialize in soba & udon, but have numerous combos. I ordered the Breakfast C combo w/ Spanish mackerel, daishi maki egg (steamed), tofu w/ bonito flakes, tsukemono, miso soup and rice ($12.25 - $1 extra at lunch). My combo was very good. What I ordered was very traditional vs the Americanized combos they offer that include CA roll. The mackerel was grilled nicely, and I was full afterwards (I didn't eat all the rice): 4 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, it is traditional Japanese. In fact, every one was speaking Japanese during lunch on a Fri: 4 Stars. The service was friendly and efficient. Fukagawa for my 200th review - yay! We came here for lunch today to celebrate my employee Brandon's birthday. I frequent this shopping plaza for many years to eat at Sea Empress Restaurant and Tea Station. But little did I know about this hidden gem. How did that happen? Although I have never been to Japan but when I stepped into Fukagawa, I felt like I was there. It is absolutely charming. As one would say it's all in the details. There's soft light coming through the windows, simple wooden furniture with bamboo accents, neutral colors all around....the place has a very "feng-shui" feeling. Even their bathroom had sliding wooden door with a latch inside (I actually had a hard time figuring out how to close it). The menu was a little overwhelming in a good way. I mean everything looked good. I was torn between today's special Soba (hot or cold) with tempura or the Tonkatsu combo or a whole selection of traditional breakfast menu items (breakfast is served all day). I was asking everyone what they were ordering so that I can allow myself to be influenced. Step into another time... Perfect place to step into for a relaxing breakfast. The restaurant is nestled in the back west corner of the Murukai plaza. You would never see it if you were just parking. The large dining area only hosted one other party. It was peaceful and a secluded breakfast. In fact, the most peaceful I have had in a long time. When I closed my eyes, i only heard a slight conversation in Japanese, sounds from the kitchen, and the pitter patter of my own heart. I could have been in Japan. They serve Japanese style breakfast including the eggs. I had a combo with steak, eggs, tofu and rice. The hostess was nice. Overall, the food was 3 stars for me. But this place gets an extra star for being so quiet and nice. You never know what will happen when you walk into a new restaurant. Life is full of surprises. I've been to Fukagawa quite a few times now. Each time has been a great experience. The location itself can be hard to find since their sign is a bit hidden. If you're facing Marukai market, look to your right and it's at the very end of the row, hidden in the corner. The decor inside is a bit dated and minimal, but I think the restaurant provides a great atmosphere for having a conversation over a meal. It rarely gets noisy and no loud music playing. Now onto the food... the menu is quite extensive, maybe even overwhelming. However, each page is categorized so if you're in the mood for soba/udon, just turn to that page. I'm a creature of habit and tried a couple of their soba dishes. Totoro is one of them and the special egg was the highlight. The creamy/stretchy texture made eating the soba noodles more fun, the soup base was light, yet flavorful. Another time, I just had hot soba with tempura on the side. Tempura was not dripping with oil and the skin was light and crunchy. I've also had their katsu chicken (comes with rice) and the chicken portion was large! I had 2 of the 5 pieces and was already full. Overall, I do like eating here, but the prices are a bit high compared to other soba/udon places in the area. The dishes I've tried really reminded me of "home cooking." Lastly, the place rarely gets full and people come and go quickly, some of my meals here have been almost 2 hours, but no one has rushed me out. read more

Entering Fukagawa and looking around the large room, I sense that the original owners were far more ambitious in trying to create a more traditional space with intricate wood work that is no longer found in newer Japanese eateries. Fukagawa has been a long time specialist in native Japanese pasta, namely thinner Soba made mostly from buckwheat & thicker Udon made from wheat. Ra-men is a relative newcomer to the Japanese culinary scene making its debut sometime in the late 19th century. Fukagawa seems to adhere more to the traditional, more restrained flavours versus Ra-men which can be over the top in its flavour profile as well as being full of unhealthful fats to add to its richness. Just as the major division is North vs South for the U.S. in terms of culture, food, dialects, politics, Japan is divided between the East/Kanto- region and the West/Kansai region. Fukagawa offers soup broth that is Kansai in style which is much lighter & clearer in color or the Kanto- style soup broth which has a good addition of Sho-yu/soy sauce. The broth itself seems to be an amalgam of Kombu/kelp & Katsuo Bushi/bonito flake. I opted for the warm Soba in the lighter Kansai style broth with Kinoko/mushroom which was Enoki or small straw mushrooms w/ a slice of Kamaboko/steamed fish terrine & Ohitashi/blanched green spinach. There was a small side dish of chopped green onion to add to the soup. I also ordered a side of Tempura which consisted of three shrimp, two Shishito- /Japanese green peppers, one Shi-take mushroom. The delicate broth worked well w/ the slightly nutty flavoured Soba. Unfortunately for me, the Soba noodles were over-cooked so that it lacked Hagotae/al dente texture. It was slightly mushy which detracted from the dish. I added a bit of Shichimi To-garashi/7 flavour Chile powder to add a bit of piquancy to enliven the nuanced broth. The Tempura may not have been exemplary, but it was executed well enough for the shrimps & Shishito-. I believe that the Shitake mushroom was dried & was reconstituted by soaking in water. However, the revived Shi-take mushroom was not drained properly so that when I bit into the crispy Tempura crust & into the Shi-take, excess water spurted out. It was a surprise I was not expecting. Service is prompt & efficient. Our waitress was helpful in figuring out how to accommodate my order since the standard menu couldn't take into account my ordering Kinoko Soba combined w/ the Tempura. Lunch time service was quick which would make Fukagawa a good place for workers to take their lunch time break. 4- Yelp stars for a good, fast lunch. read more

Such authentic Japanese breakfast bento dishes! I cant wait to try the lunch or dinner dishes but I was able to try breakfast first. There were actually a few people already dining in and it was only 9am. One of the awesome thing about this place is that it opens early. I believe its 8am. Thats so cool cause its harder to find Japanese restaurants that open early. We ordered the Mackerel and Steak & Natto. The Mackerel was so so so good. It didn't have that bad fish smell and it was marinated and cooked to perfection. The steak was also awesome but a bit chewy. It also comes with a sode of pickled cabbage, tofu and miso soup with lots of inari in it! One miss was that the tofu we had missed a bit of flavor - duh, tofu, so we had to order a side of ponzu which was 75 cents and it came with a pretty large portion but I wish they didnt charge for it and gave a small amount of it on the tofu. For as long as Fukagawa has been around, if I had known how delicious their food was, I definitely would not have waited till today to try. Tucked so far in the corner, I've missed this place for so many years - it is a secret gem of South Bay. Fukagawa's Tonkatsu combination is a tray of delicious everything. The golden brown crust on the tonkatsu was light and crispy, the pork was perfectly cook and still moist. Then there were the California Roll, the hot soba with dark soup base salad rice and soup. Mom and Dad split this combo but couldn't finish - lucky for me! I had their Soba with chicken and egg also in a dark soup base. The dark soup base is a bit stronger than clear base but was just the right broth to bring out the the flavor of the tender chicken and highlighted the soba noodles. Oishii!!! The tastiest all-day Japanese Breakfast in all of the Los Angeles Area. This is my go-to spot for the best homemade udon with steamed spinach and traditional umami dark soy sauce. The only place that makes this dark soy sauce broth right this side of the Pacific ocean. The restaurant is an old school Gardena institution that is associate with the hotel in the original Tokyo Central Plaza. The wonderful hearty Japanese breakfast includes your choice of fish (salmon or mackerel), grated daikon radish, egg your way, rice, seaweed, miso soup, cold tofu with pour-over sauce, and picked napa cabbage. I always pick the Dashimaki Tamago, a traditional Japanese rolled omelet made with egg and dashi as my egg of choice. Authentic umami flavors that cannot be duplicated by a chain establishment. We stumbled upon Fukagawa when visiting Sweet Rice next door and we were pleasantly surprised to find out that they served Japanese style breakfast. Breakfast was something I really enjoyed when visiting Japan and Fukagawa does a great job delivering it! We ordered the breakfast combo C with the fried fish. It is fairly standard and comes with egg omelet, miso soup, tofu, Japanese pickles, and rice. Everything tasted just as I remembered although I do prefer the fish to be grilled rather than pan-fried. We also ordered the eel bowl. It came in a beautiful lacquer box and the presentation is very classic. The sauce is sweeter than the preparations I've had in Japan but I suspect it is what we come to expect teriyaki eel to taste in America. I am disappointed that I can only give this restaurant a one star. I'll be giving a list of all the foods I had with my family and what I think about each dish. Croquettes: You know in shows where a character is so bad at cooking that they mistaken salt with sugar. Yeah that's what it tasted like. California Roll: You know how when someone is really sweaty, and they have that pungent vinegar smell. That's my experience with the California roll. The smell was so pungent that I thought I was in the boys locker room. When I put a piece in my mouth, I cried and and almost threw up. Katsudon/Katsu-jyu: This is my go to dish I always get from this place. This felt like a personal attack. I only got couple pieces of meat. It was drowning in salty sauce. My mind went back to the time that I went swimming at beach and the waves forced its way in my mouth. This dish was too damn salty. Tamagoyaki: It taste like diluted sugar water. The flavor of the egg just disappeared as I only taste a nuclear sweet bomb in my mouth. Service was also very slow. My meal came first after 30 mins of taking our order. It took almost an hour for everyone at my table to get their meal. It's just pathetic. This place was very special to me as this was part of my childhood. Fukagawa is well worth the drive out to the Southbay, one reason being that you can get some shopping done at the Tokyo Central Market next door, but the main reason being that I can't think of anywhere in L.A. that serves a good, traditional Japanese breakfast as they do here. (The five-star review is solely for the breakfast menu) We ordered the Japanese Breakfast (Set D), which comes with: rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, sweet nori sheets, tofu with bonito flakes, natto (fermented soybeans), eggs served your way, and a choice of either plain or Spanish Mackerel, Salmon, or steak. My husband and I both got the Spanish Mackerel, which was perfect...but for those who don't feel like picking out the bones, there is plain option as well. For our egg option, there was no other choice except to order the Dashi Maki Tamago, which is a traditional, sweet Japanese rolled egg, flavored with dashi. The egg, imo, may have been my favorite part of the meal. Service can be a little on the slow side, but the owners and workers are very polite and accommodating. It comes with rice, miso soup, the pickled vegetables, and you can select with or with out natto, you get to pick your egg... Raw, soft boiled, over easy, or dashi style egg. I like getting the raw egg and pouring it over the rice. You also get to select fish or steak. The choices are salmon, mackerel and another on I can't think of right now. This last time I did he the oyaku Don without onions. It's basically tonkatsu in a broth over rice... It was pretty good. Service: They're always nice and friendly they do get surprised when we order natto. The food comes out pretty quick and even when they're busy I never had bad service. This place is quite hidden. Parking is shared with all of the surrounding businesses so it is limited but we were lucky and found parking not too far. Inside is much bigger than the outside appears. We were a party of three ready for some lunch. We were instantly greeted when we walked in and was shown our seats. I ordered an unatama jyu that was $14.75, my guest ordered udon & the other curry. We were served tea while we waited for our food. But we didn't have to wait long. It seemed like after 10 minutes we were all served. The food was hot and it was so good! I have never had the unatama jyu and ordered it cause it was different to me. It was eel in this thin teriyaki sauce with egg. Served with steamed rice, miso, they have a little garnish and Japanese pepper. It was so good. Lunch for three of us was $50 with an 18% tip! If you want to go for a simple authentic meal this is the place to go. I really can't believe how great the food and service was. It was really worth it. read more

I was watching Samurai Gourmet on Netflix (you should too!) and there was this episode on Japanese Breakfasts that made me CRAVE HARD. This place serves it just like that episode except there's no beach view but you do get to sit inside a homey wooden restaurant that feels like nostalgic Japan. There are different breakfast sets served ALL DAY (yay!) and I got the Mackeral Set (Combo C) You can also choose Salmon or Steak. They give 4 options for the egg and I chose the most traditional style which is Dashimaki, which is like the tamago you see in sushi restaurants. You can also ask for it Raw, Scrambled, and Sunny Side Up. The set also comes with rice, miso soup, pickles, seaweed and cold tofu. Overall a very comforting and healthier breakfast option than most restaurants. There's even a set with Natto if that's your sort of thing. Plenty of parking in this plaza and this restaurant is tucked away in the corner next to the hotel. read more

I happened to be in the Torrance area around breakfast time so I decided to have a traditional Japanese breakfast here to start my day. I thought the breakfasts here were just OK. They are a bit pricey - around $12-$13 for a set meal. I got the Steak set meal with Dashimaki style egg (similar to sushi-style Tamago). The steak just tasted alright, although it was a bit plain and tough. The miso soup with tofu pouch wasn't anything special. The Dashimaki egg was too sweet for me, and I didn't particularly like it cold. The pickled vegetables were alright. The only thing I really enjoyed about the meal was the cold tofu, especially when I put a little soy sauce on it. The soy sauce that they have on their table is well-rounded and doesn't have a weird aftertaste that Kikkoman has. The ironic thing is that I can easily make something like that at home. So it's a good place to fulfill your Japanese breakfast cravings especially if you don't have a Japanese mother to cook for you in the morning. But the food is just average. read more
