Next to "Nagomi Cake House", across street from "Gardena Terrace Inn". The same side but one block from "Azuma". They need to put a big sign!! Unless you knew the place, it's hard to find this spot. They said they've been in the business +20 years or so, quite long. Ambiance: Nostalgic, very old school, simple "kappo" pop & mom restaurant. Very small. 8 seats at sushi bar and several tables. Make a reservation! Kinda quiet because all the clientele were Japanese?! Menu: Only half of them are in English (ask for the English menu, which has some pictures). It's really difficult for non Japanese clientele to understand the menu. 99.9 % of clientele was Japanese. Half of them don't even have pricing.. Bring your Japanese friend! Service: The owner chef was a bit intimidating. No picture of him! He gets mad if you did. I think his wife is the only server and can speak English. Not so much for the chef. If you needed something, ask for her. Price: Half of the menu don't even have pricing, so I guess it's a bit more expensive side than usual (in South Bay). But the quality is high. Parking: Plenty - Gluttony Expedition - Raw octopus sashimi with yuzu: It's a complimentary appetizer (1 bite size). Raw octopus is so much better than boiled one. I always order when it's served raw. Yuzu got a nice kick to it. Tuna balls: It was ok. Sweet and served cold. Ohitashi: Boiled spinach with dried bonito flakes (served cold). Ok. Nothing special. Very small portion, but was good for me. Half shell oysters: 1 order 2 pieces. Decent. Pumpkin: It was a bit undercooked, but tasty. 3 pieces. Aji tataki: Very good. Spanish mackerels were very fresh. It was supposed to be "tataki" (chopped hard and grounded in Japanese), but the fish was just cut very small pieces. Still good. Kohada: I think it was cured with vinegar. Simple yet good. Cod with sake lees: Great. Grilled perfectly. Snapper "Kabuto" yaki: "Kabuto" literally means a helmet that samurai wore in the war. But it also means "Head" in this case in Japanese. You could choose either grill or braised one. This place can grill so well, so I highly recommend for grill. I'm sure braised one is good. It was grilled so perfectly - nicely crisp outside and moist inside. Only salt for seasoning - perfect in this case. You got to deconstruct the head, so be careful on little bones and all that. Eye got a weird texture - FYI. $18. Great dish. - Conqueror's Deduction - Hidden gem. However, if you didn't know much about the essence of Japanese cuisine and/or Japanese dishes in Japan, you wouldn't understand or appreciate this place. Japanese take the food so seriously because we love to eat good food. We are the rare Asians who always go for quality, never on quantity. We enjoy the food with all the senses: Tasting good isn't enough. It has to look great, too. Quality ingredients, careful & thoughtful cooking, simple seasoning to make the ingredient flavor stand out, presentation to accentuate the dish even in your eyes etc. - the flavor could be bold or subtle. But the focus is always on the main ingredient. Less is more. Simple is the best. It's very simple, so cooking skills would stand out. It's hard to find the place that grills perfectly like this. If you loved "Dragon roll" type of the stuff or enjoyed "Shinsengumi", you might think "bland" unfortunately. If you would like to know what's true Japanese food in Japan about, try here. This place is BOMB! It is such a hidden gem that you would hesitate to share with others. Once the words go around, it would be even harder to secure a table. The spot is intimate, authentic, and serving traditional Japanese food only. The reservations are highly recommended even during the weekdays. It was packed soon after it opened. They used to serve omakase, but no more now. Except for the regular menu, there was a daily special menu but only written in Japanese (without price). So if you can read Japanese, it would help you to adventure something different. We made a reservation at 6 PM and requested two seats at the sushi bar. It is always a pleasure watching the chef preparing food just right in front of you. The chef was skillful, agile, and moving efficiently with no wasted motion. Not just our food, it was quite joyful to see how the chef prepares each type of food. Though there is no problem adding more dishes anytime, if you know what you would like and feel hungry, it'd be better to place your orders all at once. Since there is only one person preparing food, and the food is prepared in orders. Dishes here are not something you can find at the common Japanese restaurants. Most of the dishes we ordered that night were my first time seeing and trying them. What we ordered that night are: 1st - Marinated Tuna Meatball (Maguro Dango) 2nd - Assorted Sashimi (Sashimi Moriawase) 3rd - Marinated Shad (Kohoda Zuke) 4th - Japanese Yam w/ Sea Urchin (Yamaimo w/ Uni) 5th - Chicken Skewer w/ Yuzu Pepper (Niwatori Yaki w/ Yuzu Kosho) 6th - Bract Leafs Pot (Houba Nabe) 7th - Monkfish Liver Pot (Ankimo Nabe) 8th - Golden Eye Snapper Sashimi (Kinmedai Sashimi) 9th - Raw Octopus Sashimi w/ Yuzu Pepper (Nama Tako w/ Yuzu Kosho) 10th - Tuna Roll (Tekka Maki) It's more like Kaiseki style so the portion of each dish was not large. Their take out menus are - Fukuno Special Bento Box with Rice and Miso Soup $16.50 - Battera : Pressed Sushi Mackerel $12.50 - Salmon Oshi Sushi : Pressed Sushi Salmon $12.50 - Ebi Oshi Sushi : Pressed Sushi Shrimp $13.50 Fukuno Special Bento Box has a lot of varieties and slightly different menus every day, so every time I order it, I get to find something new inside. Today's Fukuno Special Bento Box contained Chicken cutlet, egg tamago-yaki, potato salad, tomatoes, sesame green beans, marinated squid, cooked hijiki seaweed, cooked kinpira radish and konnyaku, grilled duck, grilled miso salmon, cooked daikon radish, mushroom, Japanese yam, ganmo (tofu cake?), and rolled cabbage. Each is very delicious. It also comes with rice and miso soup. All this is $16.50. I believe this is one of the best value bentos in LA. We also got the Battera, Pressed Sushi Mackerel. It is saba mackerel marinated with a light vinegar and sweet kelp on top. It comes with 8 pieces at $12.50. They also offer drinks for take out at very reasonable prices. They have oolong tea, green tea, beer, sake, and soju for take out. The drinks are all 50% off. They are open for take out from 12-2pm and 4-7pm from Wednesday to Sunday. Support small business during this time! They've been around for 20+ years I believe and the quality of the food and preparation is amazing. Ordered the daily bento and pressed sushi (mackerel). So many different items to the bento that you can see the chef's thoughtfulness in it. My dad got sentimental eating it, bringing him back to his childhood days in Japan. When you open the front door in to their tiny space, one of the owner (the Natsi-looking attitude master standing at sushi bar) is not welcoming. Tried walking in a bit before 8:00 pm on a Saturday after work (they close at 9:00 if I'm not mistaken). I kindly asked the master in Japanese if it was ok to be seated for two. Without being greeted with a smile, he immediately cut off and said "we're closed for today" in English, with a stubborn attitude and stern voice. Rule number one--It is absolutely rude to speak in English when a Japanese customer is speaking in Japanese. What a bitter, disrespectful experience. Owned and run by a sweet couple who, when they saw that my partner and I were eating their delicious battera take out sets in our car, brought us out a couple cans of green tea on the house. Fukuno is like a well kept secret in the Gardena area. It's in a non-descript mini-mall which fill Gardena. The mini-mallis basically empty except for this gem and a new ramen place which replaced Darama. I finally tried this place not know what I would get myself into 6 months ago. Fukuno is run by a husband and wife team and the service is awesome. First time, we did not call ahead ask most regulars do. we just asked for Omakase Sushi and had everything. I do have to say Fukuno has very fresh fish and very adequate portions. Second time, I called ahead and the customized 7-course meal. There were a bunch of assorted items we ate. No bullshit smiles and giggles. Don't expect fast service or waiting on you hand and foot. Don't expect fake get your tips service. Simple as that. First time visiting here. I was in Torrance earlier, eating food at the Nagoya 3 day fair at Mitsuwa. The server and chef, maybe husband and wife (?), were friendly and courteous. I live in La Canada, near Pasadena, so I don't see as many options at my local sushi joints as I did on this menu. I keep searching for good battera and good oyako don. I ordered the battera, it was good and reasonably priced. And I ordered another one to go, ... gave it to my folks. Battera is "box sushi", meaning it looks like it's been pressed in a box. Often it comes w pickled mackerel. I love mackerel as opposed to a fish like tuna, bc mackerel tastes more fishy and metallic to me ... more interesting a flavor. I also ordered the kohada sunomono. Shad sashimi in vinegrrrrr. As another person noted, they had a really nicely balanced mild vinegar... I even drank most of it after I ate the shad sashimi and the delicately and finely cut cucumbers. I bought some kitchen knives and some kitchen equipment recently, and being a cooking newb, it helps me appreciate a chef's knife skills even more. Hope you try the kohada sunomono here!!! read more

If I could the rating would actually be 3.5. Our hostess/ waitress was very accommodating and the Chef was able to grill some mushrooms and eggplant for me sans the bonito soy sauce. The restaurant itself is very clean and the prices​ are beyond reasonable. However, the sushi rice was not sticky and fell apart and the sushi itself was just meh. Because of my dietary restrictions,​ I probably won't be back as they do not serve edamame except for in the Summer and no avocado or cucumber rolls as they seem to be old school. read more

The bento was an excellent choice for anyone who is lookin for variety in one filling meal. With lots of choices of foods, you never get tired of any of these choices while all go well with rice. Don't let the exterior state of the plaza fool you - the strip looks like a ghost town (big giveaway: there's a Japanese video rental shop here still in 2018), but you can tell someone runs a tight ship in keeping the inside neat and tidy. Small place is quickly full with opening, so best to reserve in advance (capacity for about 6 parties) Prefer sitting at the counter, where you can spy the chef quietly, meticulously, gracefully prepare the dishes. His organization skills are worth blogging. Bring a friend who can read Japanese, as a good portion of the menu is in Japanese. Some do not even have prices - which are all reasonable and well deserved. Classic flavors are traditionally authentic, but be forewarned, that means it can get a bit salty. Love this restaurant. I have been going here since I was a teenager with my parents (over 20 years). It may be difficult to order if you can't read Japanese, since all their daily specials are in Japanese. This is the best local sushi restaurant as far as I know. If you want sushi rolls etc, probably should not be dining here. Price is also very reasonable. Wow, what a lovely little gem! My friend took me here for my birthday and to be honest I was a little skeptical but he has impeccable taste so trusted his choice. This really feels like an authentic Japanese place, no frills, sticks to basics but does them well. I get the sense it's a dynamic duo running the place and for only having 1 server, service was great. She was attentive and things were fast! We ordered an assortment of dishes, some of which were her suggestions. I highly recommend the cod, hands down the best cod I have ever eaten. The chicken skewer was also really delicious... sushi platter was a good price and assortment/size. I wasn't a fan of the small eggplant dish and large pickled veggie sushi roll but other than that what a delicious meal. I celebrated my birthday here with yelpers including Nick H. Thanks Nick H for arranging the reservation to this place. It's almost impossible to find this place if you didn't know where to look. We got our 7 courses meal but I counted and it was 9 courses or even 10 if you counted the appetizer vegetable. First Course: Assorted appetizers (lighting squid, abalone, aiyu fish, edamame, clam, herring roe, dried white fish and baby sazai) beautifully arranged on a plate. I liked the squid the most. Second Course: Lobster Salad. Generous chunks of lobster served on a bed of salad. My favorite course. 4 stars!! Third Course: Assorted sashimi. I am picky with sashimi and this was not my favorite. Fourth Course: Broiled fish. I really liked this fish too. 4 stars. Fifth Course: Silver fish with egg mixed on a hot plate. It was just okay for me maybe because I was already full. Sixth Course: Rolled beef with sliced onion and goma sauce. It lacked flavor. I didn't really like this even though the quality of the beef was good. Seventh Course: Tofu with soy sauce. I like tofu...really but I couldn't eat this. Eight Course: Steamed turnip with uni inside served with snow peas. I ate my uni but I prefer my uni raw. Ninth Course: Assorted sushi (shrimp, white fish and salmon). We couldn't eat anymore by the time this dish was served. The chef was obviously a perfectionist. He was an artist and he prepared the dishes beautifully. My dishes were 3.5 stars but my company was 5 stars. I really enjoyed my birthday dinner and I couldn't wait to try this place. Stopped in here yesterday randomly while driving south on Western. Felt like some sushi, saw a sign, so stopped in. A very inconspicuous restaurant, if I wasn't specifically looking for sushi I would've missed it. Walked in, small place but well maintained and decorated. There were three Asian women sitting at a table eating dinner, and that was it. I sat at the bar. The husband and wife seemed surprised to see a young white guy walk in haha, but they were very friendly and accommodating. I got a sushi sampler and a large Asahi. All of it was very fresh and flavorful. Rice was bundled well, not soggy. My only tiny complaint is that the chef added a little too much wasabe to the sushi. I love wasabe, but even this was overpowering. That's the only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars. Nonetheless, it was still delicious. I'm sure next time I could tell him to go lighter. The beer was served in a frosted glass, always a nice extra. I got a couple pieces of octopus sushi. Very tasty, octopus had good texture. I looked at the rest of the menu and it's obvious this is an authentic Japanese restaurant with a varied and inventive selection. 4.5/5 overall and I will certainly return. read more

I did omakase here back in May 2012. It was a lot of weird tasting dishes here. Very different. I came here because a guy told me it was the best Japanese food around here. I immediately thought it was sushi related. I was completely wrong. After each dish I came to realize that this joint was serving "Japanese" food. It reminded me a bit of Izakaya. The service was good. They have a bar there so you can order direct from chef or so. It seems like only two people work there mom/pop style. It was weird tasting... I suppose I can say that I have had "Japanese" food now. I would give this place a three star but because this was a unique food experience and I want to go again I will give it a 4 star. If you are looking for fresh and scrumptious Japanese food with cordial service and cozy atmosphere, Fukuno is absolutely the place to go. My husband and I have been patrons for many years. We have tried almost everything on Fukuno's menu and we have never been disappointed. We have been all over the world and tried all kinds of restaurants and Fukuno is definitely our favorite one. I highly recommend their omakase (the chef will present a series of plates and we just enjoy each plate after plate) which you will have to order three days ahead so the chef has time to prepare the spectacular dishes. When we order a la carte, we usually start with mixed sushi plate (scallop, hamachi, maguro, saba, abalone, halibut, and so on, depending on what they have fresh on that day) followed with vegetables (egg plant, spinach, gabo, lobster salad) and then grilled fish (ayu, sole fish, and so on, depending on what they have fresh on that day). After this, we also love getting one unagi-don to share. I really like the fact that they buy fresh eel to make unagi-don instead of using the packaged eel. (Since they buy the fresh eel to make unagi-don, they may not always have it available. It depends on the availability at the fish market.) Finally, we will focus on their sushi menu. We usually order aji, tamago, uni, anago, ikura, salmon skin roll, tuna roll, Fukuno roll accompanied with miso soup. If you happen to have sweet teeth just like me, oh, please don't forget to order their red bean soup with mochi to enhance this cheerful dining experience even more. First & last time here. Aw, well, No big deal, maybe better if you read Japanese. Not the friendliest place we've been to. Even though there was only 1 other customer, they wouldn't let the 2 of us sit in the middle of the sushi bar, they sent us Americans to the left edge, behind the toaster oven, where I couldn't see any food except oyster shells. No one else sat in the seats we couldn't have, so maybe someone phoned in a reservation & did not show. But it seemed kinda rude to me, when the place was so empty and they make us sit in the least desirable seats. No other diners came in until we were leaving, and this was Friday night between 6:30p & 8pm. Not so popular I guess. Sushi chef mostly ignored us, but the waitress was pleasant. There is a photo menu, but only of dishes (not sushi) mostly dark, low res photos and no descriptions, so it seemed just as useless to me as a fully Japanese menu. The sushi menu is in Japanese only, so if you can't see their wares at the sushi bar (as I couldn't), you're just going to have to completely guess at what to order, and what they might charge for it. So we guessed spicy tuna roll & salmon sashimi & miso soup. The fish was fresh. But since the chef wouldn't acknowledge us, it was more like sitting at a table away from the bar, than like sitting at the sushi bar. The waitress took our orders, maybe her English is better? Miso soup was good, with tofu. $5.20 for 2 bowls. She said no MSG. An order of spicy tuna cut rolls (6 pieces) was $7, an order (8 slices) of salmon sashimi was $10. The $16 sushi assortment was a better deal, but the surprise is that there is only 1 of each item, not 2. Except for the tuna cut rolls, 8 pieces of those. When ordering, I asked if we could trade the sweet shrimp sushi for something else, and she said "no, we can take some thing off, but can not put anything else on". Geez. Restaurant was pretty quiet , except for the fan noise & squeaking of the big refrigerator. Just enough to add an edge so you can't relax. I didn't like the flavor of the hot saki, which was $10 for the bigger of the 2 sizes. Dinner for 2 came to $60 after tip. I feel like I just walked into Japan! This place is adorable, clean, and neat. Though a bit small, it's very comfortable. They only have two people working here (maybe it's because it was close to closing?), a chef and a server. The server is a very sweet Japanese lady. She greeted us warmly, and seated us right away. We ordered their sashimi, sushi, and uni with Chinese yam beneath. Their fish was very fresh, with soft to melting texture. Especially their uni! It had no metallic fishy taste. This place feels very Japanese. Small shop with limited seating, but with great food. We came for sushi but they serve a lot more than sushi here. There was a Japanese menu that we did not even get to see, not that we would have understood the menu but I wish we had a chance to explore all our options. We saw people next to us eating dishes that weren't on our English menu and they looked very interesting! Nonetheless, food is amazing and a good quiet place to grab dinner. read more

A hole in the wall/mom and pop spot, I believe they are a husband and wife team actually. The space was tidy and cozy. There aren't many tables and seats inside which definitely made it feel more intimate. Stand out dishes included: the mackeral battera (pressed sushi), jidori chicken skewer, and eggplant.
