Palace, it is not. Fu's Palace is an older, well-established, traditional Chinese restaurant. Oddly split into 2 rooms, with a small front dining area when you walk-in, then a large bar (why, is there that much action?) with a handful of booths. I was with a large party (~25 or so), and tried so many things from appetizers (fried shrimp, egg roll, paper wrapped chicken), to soup (highlight and 5.0 stars to Three Flavor Sizzling soup), to entrees (shrimp and snow peas, tangerine chicken, moo goo gai pan, broccoli beef, and chicken fried rice). Whew. Yep, I was a slug. Food was decent enough, the soup was incredible. The staff has been here for 127 years or more, and they are relaxed and know their stuff. Pro. Very accommodating. My Aunt has been coming here for years. Would I go back? Um, with her. It's not a cool place, but it has it's place here in LA for older clientele. 3 stars for the food, 4 stars for the service and the nostalgia. If you went to UCLA, you know Fu's Palace. Back in college, I visited Fu's many a time, usually on a fraternity or sorority party bus, where people dressed in costumes, sang songs, and passed around 2-liters. One of the dining rooms was always closed, but there was a huge bar and a separate dance floor. I'm not sure what percentage of their profits Fu's can thank UCLA organizations for, but I'll bet it's pretty significant. A college friend and I had always heard a rumor that this place is a real restaurant that serves real food, so we decided to try it, many, many years after leaving college. Free parking in the back! It looked exactly the same as I remembered. The menus looked like they were around since the restaurant's opening, and the restaurant is very old school Chinese.... vinyl chairs, dressed-up waitstaff, the kind of place from back in the day when Chinese food was considered exotic. We split the Volcano Punch, the sweet and sour crispy pork, and the three-flavor sizzling soup. The soup had flavorless broth and meat.... I wished there was MSG on the table that I could add to it. Good amount of chicken and shrimp but pretty bland overall. My friend's pork dish was better, and too large of a portion for both of us. The rum-based volcano punch, meant to be shared, was boozy, sweet, and served in a big clam-shaped dish with 2 long straws and a flaming lime slice. Since most of nthe cocktails looked really sweet, we figured this was a good choice ($16 but the amount of around 3 drinks). They had a full bar and lots of beers and wines, albeit a little pricey for this kind of restaurant. The servers were friendly and sweet... stopping by to joke around with us or to chat. Free hot tea, too! I was happy that the food was decent and that nothing had changed in the 10+ years since I had been here, so that it was a nice trip down memory lane. Nice and homey atmosphere. Friendly staff and great service! We loved the Wor Wonton Soup. It had tender won tons along with chicken, pork and shrimp. The vegetables were plentiful fresh and delicious. The Sautéed Spinach is to die for! Absolutely excellent! The Sweet and Sour Pork was also delicious with a tangy sauce and fresh veggies. My son ordered 3 shrimp with broccolis tonight. Over $60 in food. I started to eat and noticed a very strange, ammonia like aftertaste. I tried a few more bites to make sure I was tasting, what I thought I was tasting and sure enough the ammonia like aftertaste was there. So I tried to isolate the issue. Tried the rice by itself, it was fine. Tried the white sauce, no issue. Tried a piece of broccoli, as expected...tasted fine. Last but not least, I had a piece of shrimp and there it was...ammonia. So I consulted google and ammonia in shrimp means the shrimp are going bad or are bad depending on the ammonia level. I suspect because it was an aftertaste that the shrimp were going bad. So I call and speak to Margurite, one of the owners, and instead of seeming concerned about the quality of her food or the fact that I was starting to feel a bit queasy, she says - I cannot give you a credit unless you bring back the food because you cannot eat for free. Uh, I have been going to Fu's since 2014 and have never had a issue with the quality or service. I get it, I guess just like Amazon they want their product back before they will issue a refund...but what about customer retention. I don't live around the block...I am almost 10 miles away, which in LA traffic could take 45 mins. She wants me to refrigerate the uneaten portion and drive 45 mins to show her I didn't eat the rest. She even went so far as to consult with her chef, who also said the shrimp wasn't bad. Umm did he eat from my dish? Did he taste my food before it left the kitchen? All I know is my meal tasted like ammonia and I could not finish it. Whether I drive 30-45 mins to go drop off the half eaten container in hopes of recouping a portion of my $22 meal...not sure it's even worth it. All I know is I have to find a new Chinese spot because Fu's has lost me as a customer. I literally feel sick to my stomach and hope that if I do have a case of food poisoning, that is something that passes quickly. Post pandemic restaurant food and service is terrible. read more

So... after years of visiting as an Undergrad while at UCLA.. for reasons other than eating the food.. I finally tried Fu's palace for what is was.. a Chinese Restaurant. Sometimes i forget that Fu's is actually a fully functional restaurant, it must be all those darn Scorpion Bowls from years past that made me forget. Onto the food: Black peppered beef: -this was under the chef's recommendations list. The dish itself was way too salty for my taste. The sauce was good and not too thick..but it was too much. The beef was tender..but nothing spectacular. For $13 I was expecting something a little more..but oh wells. Garlic Sauce stir fry fish filets with veggies: -like the beef this, the fish was saturated with a huge amount of sauce...which was a bit too oily and overly salted as well. I mean don't get me wrong, it's not bad..but it's not amazing either. They also serve steam white rice with your dinner..and for me I used the rice to absorb most of the sauces from the two dishes and it made the meal a lot better. For what it is..Fu's wasn't bad. The prices are okay..and the portions were decent. However, I would say that the flavorings of the items were definitely catered for a more mix population of taste buds. It's definitely not as authentic as Chinese joints in the SGV and things are overly seasoned. However, given the location and the fact that on random nights, Fu's turn into a gathering of college kids ready for debauchery, the food was actually okay. Yes I was exposed to this flavorful sauce whilst in college in Philadelphia and my oh my is this great to have. Well . . . this was an interesting experience to say the least. We came here for a college party hosted by UCLA and USC . . . I don't know who, why or how this place was chosen but this is definitely not a place to host a college party. 30 years ago? Maybe. 2017? Nope. We arrived to, you guessed it, a Chinese Palace with an elaborate entrance. We walk in to half the dinning room still full of diners and the other half, which was a separate room, converted into a "dance area" with the DJ (provided by the schools clubs) stationed on one end of the room. It's honestly just such a weird set up for a "party". We went outside at one point and see no chairs put out, they were all stacked up in a corner so we had to pull them out to sit. The restaurant is still stuck in the 80s, old wooden counters, torn up carpets, the floorboards are still stuck in the 80s too. I definitely wouldn't have a party here, maybe stop by for lunch or dinner to see how that is but nothing else. read more

Fu's Palace is our families FAVORITE (and ONlY) spot for Chinese food! The owners, servers, cooks and staff work incredibly hard to provide excellent service and an exceptional meal. I've never tried anything that I didn't love! My FAVORITE is the crispy sweet and sour shrimp (chefs specialty menu). I also suggest the egg rolls (old style), lo mein, garlic shrimp, lettuce cups, fried rice, lemon chicken..... I really could keep going! Honestly idk why this place has such bad reviews! I used to come here for their late night parties with my boyfriends fraternity and they had really good drinks! After college, I've been a little more laid back, coming for their lunch special. Everything is made fresh and is good for the price you pay. For an average of about $10/person you get a soup, egg roll, entree, and rice (steamed or fried at no extra charge). Last time I got the tangerine chicken which you could tell was cooked super fresh. We also got the Mongolian beef which had its own unique flavor and wasn't drowning in sauce. We also got the peanut chicken. I'm not a fan of peanuts, so I only had a little taste but it was pretty good! There was so much food we had to even take it home! The taste of food is okay, service is good, I will rate 4 stars for both but the only reason for the two stars is the dinning environment, this place is full of mosquitoes and flies, I meant more than 10 combinations of mosquitoes and flies were around us during the time we ate there. We changed the table already but they followed us and we got bitten hard.... So we had to end the dinner early and leave first, it was a horrible experience and I really recommend the owner or management to place some equipment or do some pest control for this purpose, otherwise it is a torture for people dinning in. read more
