First, the cool air conditioning welcomed me in to find a refrigerated drink cooler with a wide array of drinks from the East. Immediately I picked up a bottle of Ito En Green Tea (Shohei Ohtani drinks it, why not me?) then moved along to the freezers where I picked up a Uji Matcha soft ice dessert. Just like Japan - bitter matcha and creamy vanilla in a soft mushy cone, downed with a cool, bitter Ito En green tea. It was several blocks on before I realized how hot it was again. New-ish Japanese/Asian grocery and food take out spot, I happened to walk by on the street and decided to check it out. The prepared foods section is sizeable and the food looked fresh! A lot of options: bento boxes, sushi/sashimi, onigiri, pre-made rice bowls, fried chicken, freshly prepared items like hot udon noodles with soup, and a section with various dishes like curries and braised stews that you can order over rice or noodles. Proportionally more snack foods, desserts and drinks compared to regular produce, refrigerated and frozen foods, and condiments/other ingredients though enough to do a mini weekly grocery run. Prices are overall good for the neighborhood. I tried a couple of onigiri here (kani crab meat salad $3.25 and mentaiko cured and seasoned cod roe $3.45) as a snack and the rice was seasoned with furikake, enveloping a good amount of filling. There's a smallish upstairs seating section at accessible via stairs at the back of the store that seats about 15 people if you prefer to eat your food there. read more

Fushimi Market was our last food stop before we left the city. A few of us picked up some pre-made sushi/nigiri sets and onigiri to enjoy on the bus ride home. Since it was my last meal, I decided to splurge. I was hoping to enjoy the sushi/nigiri set on the bus and saved two onigiris for lunch the next day. SUSHI & ROLL COMBO: 7 PCS OF ASSORTED SUSHI & 1 MAKI ROLL - 28 The presentation was immaculate. The sushi came in a wood-colored paper box, with the four maki pieces neatly arranged on top and separated from the seven nigiri by raw kale, ginger, and wasabi. The maki roll contained the basic trio of fish -- salmon, tuna, and yellowtail -- along with avocado. It was good, until I noticed how hard and brittle the rice was. I managed to eat the four maki pieces, but I was disappointed with the quality of the rice. Moving on to the nigiri, I tried the tuna first. The tuna had a nice texture, but again... the rice. The clump of rice was so hard that it detracted from the fish. I tried to eat the salmon nigiri with just half the rice, but the experience was still ruined. I ended up eating the rest without rice, treating them like sashimi. Additionally, the paper box wasn't very sturdy, and the soy sauce I poured on the sushi and nigiri (since I didn't have a soy sauce tray) leaked through the edges and made a mess. Aesthetic design, but not very practical. SPICY TUNA MAYO ONIGIRI - 3.75 Since I was still hungry, I ended up eating the spicy tuna mayo onigiri on the bus. It had more spicy tuna than I expected. Though it had a large amount of rice, the rice was soft and lightly flavorful, and the powerful flavor of spicy tuna was present in every bite. The rice quality in the onigiri was drastically better than the sushi and nigiri. MENTAIKO ONIGIRI - 3.75 I enjoyed this the next day, and it was still good. The layer of mentaiko was pretty thin, and there was a little too much rice, but I still enjoyed it. The mart is large, with plenty of Japanese pre-made food, snacks, cooking ingredients, and more. With so many Japanese marts in the city, I'll probably only stop by Fushimi Market again if it's convenient. I'll likely avoid the sushi options in the future and go straight for the onigiri or the hot foods instead. read more

Love love love this place...can't believe I've only now discovered it after all my trips to NYC! Lots of yummy prepared foods---no, not quite as shockingly yummy as the prepared foods in a convenience store in Japan, but certainly better than the bland overpriced crap in Whole Foods pretending to be Japanese/Asian food, and best of all, they sell a fairly decent selection of single can/bottle beer that you can have with your food upstairs if you wish. It's the perfect place for a reasonably priced meal with VERY reasonably priced decent beer (not limited to the mainstream water-"beer" at most Asian restaurants; they also have various "hard" sodas if that's your thang) instead of dealing with the slow and expensive hassle of going to a real restaurant where the food quality is usually not even that much better but where they gouge you on the alcohol plus tip plus wait time for the order to be taken, food to be made, food brought to your table, bill collected, etc. (As you can imagine, yours truly is probably every restaurant owner's worst nightmare, lol.) read more

It seemed like a Asian supermarket/convenience store but there was so much more inside. There was also a bubble tea shop and along with the premade items (onigiri, sushi, bowls, Korean fried chicken), you could also order make to order food as well. You could order appetizers, ramen, udon, baos, scallion pancake wraps, sushi, and bowls. We ordered the spicy wontons, the chicken katsu curry, and the salmon avocado roll. There's a dining area upstairs. The prices were okay for midtown and the food was decent. However, the dining area was not very clean and there were a lot of flies. I came by to grab some onigiri for lunch, and it was surprisingly emptier than I expected. I got one of their kani onigiri and 2 eel onigiri, and they were definitely delicious. The eel onigiri had a nice smokey flavor, and there was more sauce than other places, so I appreciated that. The one thing I didn't like was how tightly they wrapped the onigiri, when it came to unopening them, because of how tightly it was wrapped, the rice would start to slip out of the nori as I pulled on the plastic wrap. It usually comes out much easier, but I had the same issue with all 3 of the onigiris I purchased; however it was still delicious. read more
