Hanky Panky with Nikki & Karen

Everyone knows how much I love Gail's and EVERY person in it! Today was way special, Nikki actually put my name on the Hanky Panky - her own recipe she shares. It's comfort food that is beyond delicious. It's basically a 'cheesy sloppy joe' on sourdough toast!

Their gentleman's spud was fantastic. A coating of crunchy shredded hash browns covers the omelet, giving it a distinctive look. The omelet has freshly cut onions, green peppers, and mushrooms along with well-seasoned steak. There is flavorful, gooey cheese in every bite because the cheese is well distributed.

Stopped in for breakfast with an old friend that's been going there for years. Food was fast and good your mom and Pop type breakfast diner with a typical breakfast seating layout it was decently busy, but the waitress made sure she checked on us often.

Oh god am I full. That was my bad. I kept eating long after I should have stopped. We once ordered delivery from this place when we were in a hotel room for months. The food was good too, but today we visited the restaurant for the first time and it blew us away. My son the picky eater said their crepes are his favorite anywhere and he did a number on them. I had a pulled pork skillet from the specials menu. It had new potatoes, onion, mushroom, red pepper and bbq sauce with eggs on top. It had great proportions and it kept me eating. The pancakes that came with it were really good too. My wife enjoyed the cranberry bundt cake french toast. It had a fresh cranberry relish on top that I loved. It came with eggs, bacon and sausage too! The prices here were really great for what you get. Good coffee, good service. All around, a great experience. Can't wait to come back!

Food is delish and a bang for your buck. Never leave hungry! Service is great. We love Gail's!

a breakfast of eggs, potatoes, toast, and toast

You know, we're really being as electic as we can be, given the overwhelming preponderance of pancake houses in the midwest. So, when we saw "home of the original spud omelette", we felt we simply HAD to try. In a somewhat woebegotten part of Des Plaines, Gail's Carriage Inn has a "days gone by" look that looked almost rustic (for a diner, isn't that the point?). The parking lot has cracks and crevices, but it's functional - we parked, looked at the menu online again, and decided we HAD to try. Ok - we walked in, saw heaps of fresh-made mini-loaves of banana bread on the front counter, and were immediately seated in a booth whose springs have seen better days (the vinyl, mercifully, still had its druthers but the springs....oh my god. The springs..... seating in the booth wasn't necessarily comfortable. That is the ONLY reason for a 1 pt deduction on my review score. I did a quick bathroom run, and seeing blue sinks and tile really took me back to the 50's or 60's. Not always a good thing, but - you get the idea. But let's chat a bit about ambiance - snowflake decorations hung from the ceiling, the furnishings were prior to the 1970's, and cute little porcelain chicken figurines featured in our booth/window area. All in all? Very charming if not as comfy a spot as I'd like to have sat in. We were quickly brought coffee, and hub-hub ordered the original spud omelette (essentially a cheese omelette with hash browns cooked around it - needless it say, it's unique and that's what got us in the door! I ordered an asparagus and jack cheese egg dish with potatoes and rye toast. My god. Talk about yummy. The flavor? Yes. Worthy of another visit. The toast? Had a great toasty flavor with moisture - perfect. And even better? The prices were VERY reasonable. Yeah! Hubby loved his original spud omelette, which came with a piece of warmed up banana bread (which I, of course, had to try). I quickly determined my dad would approve (as he LOVES his homemade banana bread) and tried the original spud omelette - bravo, Gail. Something unique, flavorful, and awesome in the breakfast arena! In short- we WILL return. Good on you, Gail's Carriage Inn!

If you're a beer drinker, they have a massive selection on tap (about 90 taps--and no, that's not a typo!). They also have a large patio that looks like a great spot when the weather is nice. Inside, there's a good mix of low-tops, high-tops, banquettes, and booths. All the tabletops feature copper tops with wood trim, and exposure to water and food over time has given each table a unique patina. We arrived right as they were switching over from the brunch menu to dinner, and the staff made us feel very welcome. What We Ordered: Smoked Brisket Reuben Eggrolls: We ordered these special eggrolls for the table. My friend has a shellfish allergy, and since many traditional eggrolls contain shrimp, he was excited to try these. He said they were the best eggrolls he's ever had (though he admitted he doesn't eat them often!). He paired it with a Guinness Zero non-alcoholic draught and was amazed by how close it tasted to the original. Fish Tacos ($19): Recommended by another reviewer, these come with three cornmeal-battered, fried Mahi-Mahi tacos topped with cilantro lime cream and fresh micro cilantro. They were crispy and very tasty. If you're usually sensitive to cilantro, you might still enjoy these--I mostly tasted a bright, lemony freshness rather than heavy cilantro. Sides (Broccoli Rabe & Asparagus): I substituted chips for a vegetable side. Due to a mix-up in the kitchen, I got to try the broccoli rabe first, though it turned out way too spicy for anyone at our table. My actual order was asparagus--my absolute favorite--but it was a bit disappointing, as the bottom half of each stalk was woody and fibrous. Fish & Chips ($21.50): My friend went with this traditional entry. At that price point, he was expecting three fillets, but he couldn't finish the two that were served and took some home. Overall, a solid entrée. Classic Breakfast ($15.50): My husband got this from the brunch menu. He was very pleased with the scrambled eggs, potatoes, thick-sliced bacon, and sausage links. Overall, a solid visit with great variety on the menu!

The service is terrible and played around their "regulars" instead of them and average paying customers. This means you could be waiting to order or cash out as long as it takes for the bartenders to get out of their conversations, take a smoke break, and play on their phones for 30 minutes before actually making themselves present to you. I've also seen them trying to take shots with peoples parties and wind up getting into arguments with these customers when they found out that they're expected to pay for the bartender's shots even if they did not initiate it. Thats not as bad as how they let their regulars act and treat anyone in any way they please especially if they're selling or already hopped up on god knows what. Whats even crazier is that this place is a know "Cop Bar" and yet the cops never do anything here to stop any of it. The cops and management know exactly what goes on here and obviously get a slice of the profits so be warned, they will not be called by management. Instead, they let their bouncers handle who they think is trash. With all that said the vibe here is tense. Security is always fighting and tossing people out. Staff wont cut people off even when they are obviously not ok, because they care about the pay, not the wellbeing's of their clientele and to top all that off, the police come in off duty here but are never called in uniform when they are needed. The red flags are clearly present. You choose what you do with the information.

What I presumed an employee came in and set the table up. Several minutes later the bartender came in and said the server was on the way in and should arrive shortly. OK (not) the manager comes in and said you guys don't belong in here and need to leave. She asked who set up the table and the bartender is in tears.
