We were layed over in Charlotte and at the last minute grabbed a room at the Ballayntine....we made a reservation at Gallery and really had an exceptional meal. I recommend the Beef Carpacio appetizer and the fried chicken...I also loved the home made ice creams . the service was excellent and friendly and the manager suggested we try some "buzz buttons" from the local farm. To qualify, I travel every week on business do different cities. First time in Charlotte. Stayed at hotel and everyone from the front desk to the bartenders recommended the Gallery and the rib cap steak. This was one of my WORST meals ever on a trip. Worst than NC Basketball played against ND tonight. the premiere dish is the rib eye rib cap, but it really is 2 slices of meat. It comes with a quail egg, but mine was served with quail egg, well done. How can you get that yoke with a well done egg? Servers drop dishes all over the place, and it is run by kids who don't get exceptional dining and service experience for a 4 or 5 star hotel. Maybe because it's Starwood. Manager apologized and took care of an $8 glass of wine. Best of luck, but don't dine here. Money best spent elsewhere. read more

My husband and I went for our anniversary dinner. The food was excellent, as was our waitress. Only because I'm nitpicky, I didn't like that we made a reservation for two, and were sat at a table set for four, which they they had to alter. A lot of the staff would come over to chat, which was quirky, but they were all very nice. Our waitress found out it was our anniversary and the chef sent us out some samples of his specials, along with a dessert brownie and homemade icecream at the end. A MUST try if you go, is the Foie gras flatbread appetizer. Whether you love Foie gras or hate it, you need to try it!. My husband ordered it because he loves Foie gras, but I (usually) can't stand it. It was honestly one of the most delicious appetizers I've ever had! I ended up eating his app and neglecting my own (butternut squash soup, which was also delicious, but not a star like the flatbread). I had the scallops and my husband had the duck, we both were extremely happy with our entrees. The only thing I wasn't 100% satisfied with was my drink. I ordered the Berry Sangrai. Just as you cannot remember pain, it is difficult to remember the extreme joy and pleasure we've consistently experienced at The Gallery. It was our last night in Charlotte, and upon first taste we expressed wonder we had not gone earlier in our stay, to catch at least two glorious evenings of romance, fine food and European service. In all our years and of all our Charlotte restaurants, none match The Gallery. We treasure long, slow, romantic fine dining evenings together where we talk and order throughout the evening. We often start with just a drink. Perhaps 30-45 minutes later we may pick up a menu and select an appetizer to share. So few places are as accommodating. When unsure of which wine by the glass to choose, The Gallery offers a taste. Our favorite server never asks to take a complete order and never treats us as if we'd never been out to dine before. When we ask, he'll relate the night's specials, and not before. Just as we enjoy one another's company, The Gallery enjoys our company. We feel as treasured guests whether we order two entress or share one; whether we spend lots or a little; whether we drink water or wine. There is no finer atmosphere nor hospitality available anywhere in all of uptown, downtown, or Ballantyne. Now, let's get to the food. It is extraordinary. There are times stars for The Gallery begin where Michelin stars leave off. The menu is small but presents a puzzlement of what to choose. We've even ordered asparagus, mushrooms or brussel sprouts as an appetizer. The Gallery takes pleasure in doing it our way. No other place compares. Whether it be fish, beef, pasta, or vegetables, the preparation, presentation, texture, and pleasure delivered with each dish creates a memory and sets a standard for next time. When you order rare, it's rare. When you order medium well, it's medium well. On our last visit we failed to find a dessert we favored, so we declined. Nevertheless, The Gallery sent us home with a couple of the world's most delicate and ethereal pignola cookies -- never suggesting we should have ordered a dessert, coffee, or an after dinner drink. If there was disapointment in our order, you'd never know it. It's not to say The Gallery doesn't struggle to train some of less experienced staff. This last time, we first were seated amongst other tables and within feet of the noisy bar, but we refused the table and everything was made right. When our favorite server was out one evening, we endured a sales girl. It happens, but the money we've spent at The Gallery has proven a far better value than less spent elsewhere. We promised one another next time we BEGIN at The Gallery. It will save us money in the long run. At the risk of repeating myself, there is no finer atmosphere or fine dining to be had anywhere in or around Charlotte. We really enjoyed our dinner at the Gallery restaurant. The service was fantastic and we loved our waiter Billy's suggestions and easy going manner. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings also known as the adventure menu. Nothing we were served was currently on the menu. Our first course was amazing. I had the fabulous french onion soup by special request. There is a reason it is the best french onion soup in Charlotte. My husband had a great shrimp and scallop cerviche. This was the best dish of the night! The delightfully warm gruyere popovers were fabulous and it was hard to hold back with all the food to come. Our next two dishes were both a fresh fish. Both were perfectly cooked. One was served over a selection of matchstick vegetables with curry. We thought it had a good balance. The only dish that was a miss was the lamb. Meat didn't have a lot of flavor and the texture was not pleasing. It may not have been a good cut. The mashed potatoes were wonderful. The desserts were great! My husband enjoyed a nice piece of cheesecake with a house made sour cherry topping and I had a yummy chocolate pralaine tort with an amazing artesian marshmellow and some chocolate "art." I am rating the Gallery purely on the bar. My husband and I frequent the Gallery bar for their delicious cocktails. Greg is one of the best bartenders in Charlotte! We were visiting Charlotte for the weekend for the first time. We stayed at the Ballantyne Hotel and had brunch and dinner at the Gallery Restaurant in the hotel. The food was very vey good. Decor was nice. Service was excellent both meals. Serhat was a manager on duty when we had dinner, and he went way above and beyond, catering to our 2 year old throughout the meal, entertaining him and bringing him all kinds of treats. Don't know what has happened to this place but my meal there last night was honestly just NOT good. I have been here before and loved it...even going so far as to call it one of the best restaurants in Charlotte if not the best. Last night, that was far from the case...and on Valentines Day too! There were four of us in our party. We ordered a combination of the 3 course special menu and the regular a la carte menu. I had the lobster and truffle risotto which tasted so fishy I could not choke it down. My mom got the oysters Rockefeller which arrived like warm and salty as you can possibly imagine. My husbands butternut squash soup was also like warm and honestly tasted like something out of a Campbell's can (let's face it I've had better Campbell's). I sent mine back and got the mixed green salad instead. That was actually good although not outstanding which is what I expect from this type of restaurant. Still trying to be positive we moved on to the next course. Out of 3 dishes bc my husband and dad got the same thing, 2 were sent back. The scallops were gritty, fishy and just plain gross. My mom's swordfish was also fishy and tasted just "not fresh" is how I can describe it. The only decent dish was my filet, which I still had to be sent back to have cooked correctly bc my medium came out just plain rare. The dessert plate was decent and we did eat that, but all in all I was extremely underwhelmed and will NOT be dining here again unless they do something major with their kitchen. This remains the best restaurant in Charlotte we've ever visited. While we hit it near St. Valentine's Day when the menu was limited, the overall quality of the food, service and atmosphere just can't be beat. We always sit in the bar on a sofa or love seat for two. Derek encourages us to sit the night, ordering items as we go. I ordered the salmon - the modest portion was fine, given we were ordering lots of apps, anyway, but for most, it probably would have left them wanting. It was wonderful: sweet, juicy, fresh and slightly seared on the outside to give it that perfect combination of texture and flavor. We just can't find this kind of ambiance quality and service anywhere else in the Charlotte area. We especially love being greeted and then afforded privacy. It's professional service. read more

For such an upscale restaurant, you would think they would have an inspection rating higher than 90! We took three out of town guests here for dinner. My husband had the duck, which was good, I had the pheasant, which was very chewy and not fully cooked. Our guests had Monkfish, Pheasant, and the beef; the fish was spongy and slimy (undercooked) and the pheasant was also undercooked. The bread was the best thing during our mean! Updated 9/2012 Their Sunday brunch is still great but some times they have a buffet and sometimes they do not; I can't figure out their rules as to whether they will do a buffet or not. But breakfast from the menu (great salmon plate or omelet) or buffet are both great. They do a great Sunday breakfast buffet. The food choices are limited but all well selected and delicious. Go for the cold buffet and enjoy their excellent salmon. The fruit is fresh and the granola is as good as it gets same goes for their made in house pastries; over indulge in their blueberry muffins, they are worth it. For a special occasion call ahead and let them know what the occasion is. You will be made to feel special. It is a given that any food ordered there is excellent. If you are bored one afternoon try their bar (off of the Gallery) for a relaxing drink and real tasty bar snacks. I forgot to mention they serve first rate coffee and I do not mean Starbucks. If all this sounds great but you are on a reduced budget go there for lunch, same great kitchen turning our that great food but a tiny bill at meal's end. You can't go wrong with their steak or scallops at lunch both have portion sizes that do not overwhelm (or make you feel guilty as you get up from the table). And with any meal order their coffee which is first class; if you are used to dinner or chain cafe coffee go here and taste what coffee should taste like. read more

You know that old saying try try until you succeed. Well, Gallery is failing miserably at it. They constantly change the menu but its worse when compared to the previous season. I think its a good idea to have a seasonal menu but when you bring nothing back that is popular and insist on making it worse, then you really don't care about the locals in the area and only catering to tourist who stay in the hotel. No consistency at the bar either. One bartender will make an amazing drink and when you go back next week , it is different. Why do you have sports on Tv when you don't have a good bar menu? Who wants foie gras and flatbread while watching a game. How about sliders and wings? The 2 bites mousse and jello like dessert with some liquor look good on the menu but taste like crap. read more

Staff was very rude. We did not have reservations. I should have called prior to our visit but it was a last minute decision and we used to stay at the hotel when we did not live in N.C. The manager was at the entrance and asked if we had a reservation. I said no. He said sorry they were booked. No problem we could come back later. However looking at the restaurant 1/2 of the restaurant was empty. The bar was beside the restaurant. My husband asked if we could get a drink in the bar. The mananger said yes. Went to the bar, once again open tables everywhere and surprise we are offered the dinner menu.. The bar and the restaurant are basically the same room. It is a shame! We dined here on Christmas Eve and I guess I expected better. We had a 7:30 reservation but still had to wait almost 30 minutes for a table. Since it was a holiday, I kind of expected to wait. When our waitress came to take our order I told her I was a vegetarian. I got an awkward 20 seconds of silence and a deer-in-the-headlights stare from her; not what I was expecting. I then told her I would just order some apps and sides. Normally this would not phase me, BUT the person sitting at the next table also mentioned to her waitperson ( a different one than mine) that she was a non-meat eater and she got a totally different response. Her waitperson went on to explain how the chef would make her a vegetable platter with a nice assortment of choices, etc etc. No problem, they would take care of her, etc etc. I couldn't believe it! My husband and I just stared at each other in disbelief. If there is a vegetarian option, I would expect that ALL the wait staff should know about it and be able to verbalize it to guests especially at an establishment like Gallery. I didn't want to cause a problem, so I just enjoyed my salad and au gratin potatoes and a very delicious dessert. The food was great, just not a lot of options for a vegetarian. On a positive note, the bartender was awesome! He was friendly, and apologetic about the wait and took good care of us. I'd definitely go back for drinks at the bar, not sure I would go back for dinner. Too many other great restaurants in the area that understand that not everyone eats meat! read more

Just had brunch here, party of four. Pretty disappointing, the squash soup was too salty to eat, and the onion soup had virtually no flavor. Surprisingly bad. Two in our party returned the coffee as undrinkable, and the waitress was either very inexperienced or inattentive. On the positive side, the pancakes, eggs, French toast, and sides were pretty good. This restaurant is only so so. It is billed as luxurious but it does not even come close to what I consider a luxury hotel restaurant. I have a family member in the hotel business and I have dined at many hotels and resort restaurants across the country that are far superior to this one. Each time I have eaten here, it feels like they are skimping on portions but charging you top dollar. And the dishes aren't very special, especially for the money paid. I have eaten here twice, once for brunch this past summer and today on Christmas. I have to say the food is overpriced and okay but not great; and the portions are small. Service seems somewhat slow as well. The first time I went for breakfast, I had an omelet which was nothing special. Others in our party got chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits which they enjoyed but again the portions size was not adequate IMHO. Two members of the party did say the bloody mary's were good. The Christmas menu sounded good in theory but the execution left something to be desired with regard to the prix fixe menu. There was a choice of a la carte menu or prix fixe dinner. I got the scallops from the a la carte which well cooked but you only got 4 medium sized scallops and some kind of inedible garnish for $32. I also did a french onion soup which was the BEST dish of the night- good portion, nice broth with onions nice cheesy big crouton which formed a creamy consistency with the broth- one of the best I have had ( I give credit where credit is due even if other aspects of the dining experience were disappointing). I had the whipped potatoes as a side dish and they were decent. I skipped desert. They had several types of interesting breads to choose from with three types of butter which were quite good. But they act like it is gold. Instead of giving you a small bread basket with different choices, they come around and dole out the small pieces of bread in a piecemeal fashion one by one - what's up with that? My husband got the prime rib on prix fixe menu, but it was some weird configuration. Instead of being the traditional sliced prime rib with au jus It was like they formed it into some kind of beef roll and cooked it, then sliced as slab of meat, with horseradish and garlic and very little au jus. Even the server admitted that the chef had gone out on the limb and reimagined a classic instead of just serving a class prime rib. No where in the description did they explain it that way. The server SHOULD have make him aware that it was not the classic prime rib and really explained the dish. His meal included a cream of mushroom soup which he liked and a very pitiful looking small beet salad- he said that the portion should have been doubled to be like a real salad instead of a taste of beet salad. The dinner also came with a choice of a eggnog and gingerbread dessert or a chocolate dessert. He chose the eggnog dessert. Instead of giving you a whole piece of gingerbread poundcake, topped with eggnog ice cream and garnished which cream and small chocolates, they put a Tablespoon of eggnog ice cream on a plate, surrounded by some CUBES of gingerbread pound cake which was somewhat dry ( not an entire slice) along with some dollops of cream and about 2 small chocolate candies and some ginger slices- just pitiful. The prix fixe menu was $50. Our entire meal with wine and a badly prepared old fashioned which was not properly mixed came to $148 with tip. NOT WORTH IT. We did not want to cook for Christmas, but we could have done better by buying a dinner at a local grocery store instead of dining here. While we were dining we could see servers taking items to the bar as many people were dining in there. That food looked better that what was being served in the dining room. I doubt seriously I would return to this hotel to dine again. I don't want to be disappointed again. There are too many other places to try in CLT, but if on chance we did go back, I would look at the bar menu instead of the Gallery Restaurant. Based on two experiences at this restaurant, I can't recommend it. read more

I took my family to Easter brunch. For $100 per adult ($75 +23% AUTOMATIC service charge they add), you would expect first class service. You'd be wrong. Despite a reservation at 1:30, we were seated at 2:10. The service was what you'd expect at an Easter brunch that charges $20 per person. On a typical weekend, this restaurant charges $25 per person. We were looking forward to a delcious dinner at The Gallery last week. Sadly, it was such a waste of our time and money. Appetizers: my squash soup was delicious while my husband's french onion was "the worst he has ever had". Next our entrees: He had short ribs which had so much fat on them they were unappetizing. I had the chicken & dumplings which were so bland That I had to add lots of salt (I never add salt,but I was famished). After, we were both so humgry that we decided dessert Could not be worse so we shared the deconstructed bread pudding. We were so wrong! It was dry, tasted like whiskey and so inedible that our waiter was kind enough to take it off our bill. We are so sad since this is the only nice hotel in South Charlotte. Hope they take our review to heart and work on improving. However, it will be a long time before we return. My family was in town visiting and we decided to take them to The Gallery to celebrate a special occasion. The service was awkward. Our first server was not exactly rude, however rubbed us the wrong way. We especially did not appreciate being upsold on ordering 2 sides for the table. The person asked us if we liked a particular food, and then informed us that he was going to bring them out because they were just amazing. We assumed they were complementary, when indeed they were not (nor were they very good). They were taken off the bill, but still had to deal with the hassle and delay. The odd server also informed us that he was ill ("feeling queasy" he told us) and that another server would be taking care of us. Obviously alarmed after being served food by this person. Our new server was very nice. Not sure if they are encouraged to up-sell, but certainly not something we expected, certainly not in that manner. read more
