Julie/Julia Yes, to me this place has the best kimchi anywhere. I'm not a kimchi expert or anything, but everyone else really pales in comparison. Even my friends' mom's homemade kimchi is not as good. Be careful of the green pepper and cabbage that they also may give you. The middle of the green pepper will be scorching hot and cause tremendous discomfort if you cannot handle a really hot spicy pepper. Well to the dishes. I really only know 3. The bi bim bap and the dolsot bi bim bap. For those that aren't asian and need a description. The bi bim bap is basically a big 'ol bowl with beef and lots and lots of veggies with a fried egg. You mix it up with rice and some sweet spicy sauce and there you go. If you want it nice and hot, you get the dolsot version which is the same thing but in a very hot clay pot. They'll give you a small bowl of soup on the side. The last dish is the famous Sul Long Tong. I see others describe it as a beef broth soup with rice and rice noodles in it. I thought it was oxtail soup with pieces of beef. Regardless, it's delicious and truly a delight after a night of drinking. There is scallions and salt on the table as you are suppose to use the salt to flavor the soup. Be careful not to scoop too much. I would try half a spoonful of salt at a time and mix into soup until you get the right flavor. This is truly an individual preference.... They have kalbi but to me, this is not the place for it. The korean pancakes are pretty good but like I said, I come for the bi bim bap or the sul long tong and pig out on the kimchi... Great deal. You pay like $12 - $14 for either and you'll leave pretty full and satisfied. The place is open 24/7 and has a nice atmosphere. Definitely better than their location in the city. There's valet at the restaurant during busy hours or just park in the lot during the off hours. Staff is nice and feel free to ask for that second helping of kimchi. read more

Terrible Terrible Terrible!!!!! One of the worst experience I ever had. They're mainly famous for Sulungtang with Kimchi. but It was very casually informed there is no Kimchi so we had no choice. We used to frequent this place but literally could not eat our meal today. This location has gone steeply downhill. Their speciality, the seolleongtang, is nearly inedible. This morning it tasted like they dumped in extra water because they were running out. This place should not charge more than other, better local places. We also asked for extra noodles which they charge $1.99 for -- charging for extra is fine but they give VERY little. That's absurd when you consider the higher price and how bad it tastes. I really wanted to like this place. However, I was a bit disappointed. This place was one of the only options with outside seating available that was opened around 3PM (totally understandable since it's an awkward time to have a late lunch). The banchan available is only 1 dish of kimchi (they do refill when the dish is empty). I'm not sure if this is typical for this restaurant prior to COVID as I'm used to other Korean establishments offering different types of banchan (typically 3-5 dishes). The kimchi was good; not too spicy and had good flavor. We ordered the seafood pajeon for the table. It was just okay. I wasn't craving anymore than the one piece I had for myself. I also had the bibim naengmyeon. It came out a bit more on the watery side than I am used too. That caused the overall spicy flavor to be waterdowned. The noodles, however, were nice and chewy. This used to be a place I would come to regularly. The Dolsamkim Dolsot Bibimbap and the Seollang Tang were always amazing and authentic tasting. Kim Chee here was super good, even special and some time I would crave just that. Even though this place did not have a wide variety I could always count on the taste and that it was always open! Unfortunately there seems to have been some drastic changes here recently. I first noticed the Kim Chee was very different. It no longer had the special taste and texture that used to make it so good. Brought it up to the manager and he said that nothing had changed but maybe the chef had not made it right just that day. Came back again a while later and had the same issue. This time the Seollang Tang and the Dolsot Bibimbap did not seem right either. The staff also seems less attentive, just dropping the food in a careless way. Talked to the manager again and he repeated what he had said before. Assured us the Kim Chee was made exactly the same way and with the same ingredients. Unfortunately this seems like it does not hold much water. The Kim Chee now is completely different in taste and style. I heard that management had maybe split somehow and maybe the Manhattan location manager brought the Kim Chee recipe to the location there. Will check it out shortly to see if they retained there quality. Feel terrible this place has gone down hill as it always used to be excellent. Hopefully they will turn it around soon! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food this place offered. The ambiance of the restaurant was fancy and the staff was friendly. Their corn and rice tea was really good. They gave us complimentary Kimchi that was delicious. Overall the food was very tasty and authentic Korean. I would definitely go back. My to go spot for everything Korean (that's not bbq) You know..I write a lot of reviews and this is the only one I can say that my mother recommended this restaurant to me haha. Hey! There's a first for everything. I came here with a few of my buddies and I ordered the dolsot bibimbap. My friends ordered some kind of white stew (which they later found out that went will with something spicy or something with heavier flavor. Fail them. My bibimbap was by far the best bibimbap I have ever had. Compared to the one(s) I've had in Ktown just over the river, this one is by far the best. Another thing to add is their kimchi is also AMAZING. I have never been to a restaurant where they cut the kimchi right in front of you. According to a Korean friend, not many places do that! I will say the place is just a little pricey, but for the quality and the great service. I am not complaining one bit. Bottom Line: If you're in the Palisades Park/Fort Lee area you are definitely going to be overwhelmed with Korean restaurant choices. Well everyone knows the kimchi and kkakdugi is BOMB here. It's really the best part of Gam Mee Ok. People just go for the kimchi. And maybe the sullungtang which is also pretty awesome. It's a bit pricey, but I think it's because this place is pretty popular now. They just recently got Pho, I've seen people get it and they seem to enjoy it but have not had it yet. The yookkehjang is pretty good too. The haemul-pajun is good but WAY over priced. The chadolbehggi is good too except for some stupid reason they don't give you the noodles with it. Service is usually good, but sometimes the waiters are cranky but I just brush it off because they work long shifts. read more

Gammeeok - Korean Near Me - Fort Lee, New Jersey

Gam Mee Ok had me when the friendly server came over with a clay POT of kimchee and started taking out whole strips of that delicious fermented stuff and cut them with scissors. Never have I seen kimchee served this way - I was informed by my Korean American friend that this is the old-school method of serving kimchee - and it was accordingly the best kimchee I've tasted in my life. The rest of meal stayed at that level. We had the sol lun tang (an ephemeral light beef broth), bimbambap and kalbi. All were amazing, with the kalbi being some of the best and most tender kalbi I've ever had. The only let down was dessert; after all that spectacular food they plied us with mere slices of oranges. The interior is freshly and cleanly decorated, with elegant lines that don't impose on the conversation nor ambiance. Service was efficient, if not too attentive but nothing was glaring. The only problem? Gam Mee Ok seems to only be reachable with a car, and when you get there, expect to use the valet. Still, one of the best Korean meal experiences I've had hands down. read more

Came just for the sullungtang and I enjoyed it. Its fairly priced at $10 for a bowl of sullungtang and a bowl of rice. Unlike most other korean restuarants, they only give you kimchi (really good!) and lettuce as side dishes. Make sure to add salt to your soup otherwise it'll taste very bland. read more

Sad reduction on quality of dishes served. I am not sure who is in control of their kitchen but it is not a Korean chef for sure. It just can't be. Broth is just water plus bone plus beef meat plus time in right portions. Something is not right. When one of the component is missing, taste lacks richness. What Korean sullongtang place do not make their own da-dae-gi? Maybe a place that Is run by a non-korean chef? So I asked for garlic, Korean red pepper flakes and ground wild sesame seed mixture. They brought sliced garlic instead of ground garlic and all in separate dipping dishes. This is like asking for a steak sauce at a steak reataurant and they don't have it so the customer had to ask for steak sauce ingredients separately thinking they would understand what steak sauce is. My bf and I went over the weekend and it was delicious! We had sullungtang, pajun, and bindaedduk. All great. Kimchi and radish kimchi: also delicious. Service got spotty after we ordered because of the amount of people who walked in after us. It took us a long time to flag a waiter. I had to walk up to the counter and ask and then wave at her once again after a few minutes. The worst was the aftermath: We almost immediately had tummy reactions. Rumbles are not a good sign! My sister and bro-in law love this place but I think it's b/c they like how they don't have to go too far from their house to eat good korean food. I judge restaurants by portions, taste, and price... which is why I give this place a 3.5 (rounding to a 4 just b/c of the live music). Ambiance: They had a live chello player who played the whole night. It was pretty snazzy to have live entertainment during dinner. It is very very clean inside and I definitely felt it was less like the K-Town hole in the wall food place that I'm used to. I really enjoyed how clean and comfortable the restaurant was though.. it was not crowded and so loud that you couldn't talk to the people across from you. Food: Here's the tricky part... I enjoyed my Seolleongtang (beef bone soup) but my friend reallllly disliked her dish. She couldn't even finish it. She got the sausage stuffed with rice and garlic and grassnoodles and etc... and it came with tons of intestine or liver that she couldn't bare the sight of.. Everything else was pretty good but it ended up being pretty pricey for not that much food. Also, you basically have to valet, so that kinda sucks too..... but overall, its not too bad. A really average place. I don't remember if it's the husband or the wife (now divorced) that operates this one. Not having been to the one on 32nd, I can't really compare. This place is a seollungtang restaurant. You really should only order seollungtang at a seollungtang restaurant. When I was there they claimed to have run out of kalbi. How is that even possible. Their radish kimchi is solid and perhaps I would go back for that alone. I am a bit skeptical of their seollungtang because it is too white. A great 24-hour option after a hard night of work, partying, or whatever. Given the location in North Jersey, you can either go to a diner or come here for a late, late night meal. There is a varied menu of Korean dishes, but this place is best known for its sullongtang. Basically, it's a beef soup with sliced beef brisket, rice and noodles. Add the right amount of sea salt and scallions from the bowls on the table and you have the perfect comfort dish for when you may not be feeling so well in the morning. The other specialty of the house has got to be the kimchi. Kimchi is one of those things that different people will have different ideals of what perfection is, but Gammiok's kimchi is very much the embodiment of at least one of those ideals. Their kimchi is the best example of a medium-ripe cabbage kimchi I've ever seen. Always consistent with nice plump pieces and a nice hint of sweetness. And the portions are cut for you table side, so you know that it hasn't been sitting out, getting dried up like some places will do. The staff will actually bring out a little ceramic pot of both the cabbage and radish types of kimchi to cut from and both are good. The kimchi is available for take-out and is a good deal even compared to the korean markets. The parking lot is not large, but they will valet for tip during peak hours. Two minor complaints though. Prices have been creeping up and they took the yookhae (sliced raw beef) off the menu. read more

I am no newbie to korean food and very familiar with asian food overall. Decided to try this place after getting a groupon. I was dismayed and turned off with this establishment because they will give you sub-par service, food and overall treatment if you come in there with the groupon ( see other reviews) The overall decor of the place is sleek and inviting. Thats where my positive feedback ends. The portion was small and quality was just mediocre. They give only two small side dishes (kimchi and turnip salad) with your dish which im used to getting around 6-8 in other Korean places (big and small). The service was cold and spiteful....why spiteful....they served the ribs first ( 3 strips) and ten minutes after, our dumpling APPETIZER and bibimbap. I asked where my rice was for the beef ribs and they said, "for groupon, we do not give rice." An Asian restaurant who will not give you rice?? What the heck is that crap?!?!?!? So we paid $2 for a bowl of rice....that just leaves a bad taste in your mouth and overall experience!! I dont even see the business rationale of it since rice is sooooo cheap and staple of asian food. And they will withold it from you. On top of that, they will not pass by your table after they drop off your food. Nice place. 1) Good food spot open 24 hours. It is one of the few non-diner places open 24 hours, it's a good option for a late night meal. 2) The ambiance is nice. And the service is good. 3) The price is a drawback. Pretty expensive, even for Korean place (which are usually expensive). 4) My favorite 24/7 spot in the area Pho 32. They are one of the few places that open late in this area at all but the food can be better. I have been there mutiiple times and have always found the same dislikes and likes of this place. Pros: -The service is quick but can be kinda slow when it is busy which is understandable. -The Kimchi here is pretty good.Which is always a plus for any seollang tang place. Cons: -All the food on the menu is always missing something. Seollang Tang is very watery and lacked flavor. The Soon Dae Gook is for sure not cooked to order or even heated to order because every time I have been there it is either dry or cold. - The parking lot can be a pain but they do have valet parking during the "normal" hours. Today was the first time I've left zero tip in 44years. This is how it went down... Went with my 78 year old mother and her friend. One of the worker who I think was the manager, denied us of our entry because my mother's friend forgot to bring a mask, even though it was outside dining and people were dining 3feet away without a mask. We were eventually allowed to enter because she was able to get a mask from a store across the street. I guess my mother and her friend really wanted to dine here. It took them 10minutes to take the order. Another 10minutes to bring a cup of hot water. When a waitress finally came to take our order, we ordered a sul lung tang, two orders of dho gha ni tang and su yuk. Su yuk came out first with no plates to put it. No soy sauce, no Kim chi. At least we had chop sticks, spoons and napkins I guess. Tongue and tripe(not sure the name of it) turned out to be uneatable. When complained, one of the waitress told us that she will replace tongue and tripe with briskets. Sul king tang came out 30 minutes later. Requested take out containers 3 times and didn't get any. Only got it when I went up to pay and requested again. The manager did apologized blaming it on one of the worker not showing up to work. I say no excuses considering there were only 10 tables the most with a manager, 2 waitresses and 1 bus boy. Gammeeok used to be one of my favorite place to visit since the mid 90's at 32 street after a night of drinking. It is sad that I won't be returning anytime soon. Please get your s**t together so that I could return and enjoy your establishment again. read more

Food 3/5, Service 0/5. After being seated at a table, nobody came by to take our orders for 10 minutes, and only after we had to repeatedly gesture. After we were done with our meals, again nobody would come by when we needed the check. So we went up to the register, and the lady there rolled her eyes and scolded us that she "can't do anything" without the check. We told her what we had ordered, but she said "yeah but what you tell me is useless". Disappointed with my experience, I quickly wrote a 15% tip on the receipt and said "thanks, bye" to which she proceeds to ignore after a quick glance at the tip. Needless to say, I won't be coming back to this joint again. This place was one of my favorite Korean restaurant in NJ for dinner (& soju) n breakfast, yes the breakfast. (opens 24H) But, my first visit to to this place after reopening was a very disappointing one. It's sokoritang became mediocre with very dark broth. It used to be much clearer. I understand that the food taste may be different time to time even at the established restaurant like this one. Beside the food, I was mostly disappointed about the hostess at the door (/cashier) who was very rude greeting customer. The taste, I'm sure they will get it back. In the metro area, this is my favorite spot for hot (not spicy) Korean soup. There is not a lot of choices in their menu. You come here really for their slow-cooked bone marrow soup (sulung tang). They are known to be good for your health and a cure for a hangover. You can add some Korean sausages (soon dae) to your course if you're brave enough. They are made from intestinal blood. Sounds good? ;) My favorite is their Kimchi pancake. This is what I call soul food and Seoul food: Home away from home. Something to note: If you are unfamilliar with Korean food, you might want to just order stone hot bibimbap. It's filled with different vegitables and rice. You might find sulung taang to be somewhat bland compared to Vietnamese soups. For New Yorkers, there is a Gam MEE Ok in the East Side. read more

I used to come here for over 20+ years for their staple dish Seolleongtang and their kimchi. But this is not the same as it used to be after it reopened early this year. Maybe the owner or chef or both have been changed but when we got there we didn't even get a proper menu and the waitress had no clue, literally. We ordered Seolleongtang and Bibimbap (vegan version for a vegan friend). We got no plates and when Bibimbap arrived, it had egg on it. When we told her about the egg, the waitress gave us oh I had no idea look on her face. Then we asked about the kimchi if it was vegan, she promptly said yes. An acquaintance recommended this restaurant so I came to check it out. At first glance, it appeared to be a place visited by traditional Koreans. Good sign. We were told to get the Seolleongtang or Ox-Bone Soup so that's what we ordered. We also ordered kalbi and Bimbambap. We were not fans of the ox-bone soup or the bimbambap. We expected the stone bowl bimbambap to have less mushy rice (aka different from the rice that was in the ox-bone soup). But the kimchi and kalbi was excellent. Tender and delicious! The good thing about the light bone broth (which you need to add scallions and salt to adjust to your taste), is that it counter-balances the richness of the grilled meat. I would have liked the soup to not have arrived lukewarm and instead be HOT. I wished to have seen steam rising from my bowl (like the ones at other people's tables while I was exiting). read more

Got some pork belly dolsot which is their pork belly and kimchi rice on a hot clay bowl which makes it sizzle and cook even more. The portion was rather small and I didjt really taste the pork belly too well as it was steaming hot and drowned out by the rice l. Bi Bim Boo-yah! Yelped Fort Lee for some good Asian food and this place did not disappoint. Brought the extended family and everyone was pleased - not an easy task. Pros: "Free" valet parking, accommodated 9 easily for lunch, wonderful kimchi and kimchi-infused dishes, high quality kalbi (though I agree that it may not be the specialty of the place), and the best bibimbap I've ever had. You know when you have some really wonderful ethnic food and say, "so this is what it's supposed to taste like." Well the BBB made me do that. Would love to come back and try some of the many authentic looking broths and soups. Seating worked pretty well for the kids (giant log-like stools). Kimchi pajeon (seafood pancake) was also exceptional. Cons: A tad pricey, but not way out of line. Not as many sides as you would expect, but again, maybe that's the real deal. No rice with any of the dishes we ordered - a bit surprising. Toss up: Japchae was only so-so, though the boy loved it. read more

It's larger and more open setting allowing for the diner to smell the aroma dancing in the air. the kimchee is an amazing standout... such great flavor and well fermented balance. So my friend said that this place is known for their Suh Long Tang!!! And it did not disappoint at all! I've been craving some good suh long tang for ages and I've only had it in the City and when I wasn't sober so I was excited. As soon as my friend picked me up from Newark we headed straight here. I hadn't eaten anything all day and was in a dire fix to cure my Korean fiending. They cut the kimchi for you right there and the food comes out fairly quick. We ordered two suh long tangs and two galbis. YUM! The galbi is so tasty and tender... and the suh long tang was so fresh and milky thick. Made my tummy super happy. 3.7 stars! Our first day arrival in NYC was tiresome having to carry our luggage, figure out how to use the transit system, and reach our stay in Fort lee, NJ during rush hour. So when we finally reached our destination, we were quite tired and famished. All we wanted was a nice sit down restaurant and a warm meal. Gam Mee Ok was conveniently close to where we were staying and luckily it didn't disappoint. Their hot tea was smooth with a pleasant aroma, very calming. LA is a hot spot for good Korean restaurants, so I was surprised to find out that NYC also has a strong population of Koreans and consequently spread of Korean cuisine. I'm not big on kimchee, but I LOVED Gam Mee Ok's kimchee. It's fresh, and not overly spicy and/or sour. How the waiters would bring out a pot of the kimchee and cut it in front of you was quite unnecessary, but interestingly amusing. Good, attentive service. The basket of celery and carrots was unique. I 'm not sure if it was meant to be eaten this way, but the fermented bean paste was a good dipping sauce with the celery/carrots. We ordered the chap chae and the bibimbap in a stone pot. Chap chae had a good mix of veggies and good flavor, but the noodles were a bit too soft. The bibimbap was not bad, but I've had better in LA. Their menu seemed to be mostly limited to beef choices, it would be better if they offered other meat choices. read more
