This place had a line when they were close to closing time. It's on the same street as the frozen banana places. The flavors were interesting. We have the option to choose 2 flavors for 1 scoop. Was walking from the chocolate banana stand that saw this really cute gelato place. We ordered few of the flavors and was told that the vanilla bean is dog friendly therefore got a scoop for our gourmet legged baby and she enjoyed it soooo much as elaborated in the pic! We stumbled upon this store on our way to get frozen chocolate bananas. Personally, I love me a good creamy gelato. The girl was friendly behind the counter and allowed us to sample some before choosing. I got some kind of honeycomb flavor and pistachio. Being that pistachio is my FAV flavor of allllllllll ice creams, this one wasn't that great. A little disappointing to be honest. Worst gelato we have ever eaten in our entire life. Do Not Waste Your Money!!!!! The mint gelato tastes like medicine. It doesn't even taste like mint. My daughter hated her gelato so much after one bite we asked if she could have something else because she couldn't stand the taste. She was just so bubbly and very kind and patient with us. Her name was Daisy! (her name literally matches her personality)! Corporate definitely needs to give her a raise for her great attitude with customers. Not to mention the place? It was so relaxing and incredibly clean. They state they are kid friendly but I have to disagree the service I observed today by the female on staff nicknamed "Mango" her badge was hard to read. She was rude to a child less than 6 years. Also the gelato I order the Balboa Banana and Chocolate tastes very bland. The store is very understaffed which may explain the bad attitude by this staff member. She acts as if her family members own the store and customer service is 3rd in line when it comes to service. I plan to tell all my Newport friends and families to avoid this place like the plague. It is our go-to place for celebrations, plus any good excuse to treat our family to something nice. Tonight I went in to purchase for the family who was waiting patiently at home. Staff went waaay out of their way, and completely of their own accord, to devise a plan for the cups of Gelato to stay properly chilled until I arrived home. After filling each cup Sarah placed each one in a specialty freezer. After paying, Ray and Sarah carefully presented it all to me. What amazing, genuine customer service! Sarah was super kind during one of my previous visits, explaining the nuances of different flavors and found me a new flavor after decades of only having hazelnut (Nocciola). If it were solely based on flavor, we would only shop at Gelatissimo. If it were solely based on customer service, we would only shop at Gelatissimo. I came in on a Friday around 3pm and there was no line. There were many flavors to choose from and you're able to sample as many samples as you want before ordering. As someone who was visiting Balboa Island for the day, I thought the Balboa Chocolate Banana was the most fitting for the location and it was also the flavor that tasted the best to me after trying many samples, so I ordered a single scoop ($6.75) of that flavor. I really loved the banana flavor, as it was not overpowering yet had the right amount of sweetness to it. The chocolate shavings were perfectly sized and added a nice crunch and milky flavor to the gelato. Although the price was a little expensive, I believe it was well worth it because you can tell they make the gelato fresh for that day and you're paying for quality. They also include a free waffle cookie with the order. The only downside is that the gelato melted quickly and I had to go back in to the shop to grab more napkins. The ambiance is colorful and cute. The interior is small and I don't recall there being any seating inside, but you can find many benches outside the shop along the sidewalk. Overall, I would love to come back if I was visiting the island again. read more

My favorite flavor has to be the Chocolate-Covered Strawberry; it's rich and creamy with the perfect mix of chocolate and fresh strawberry taste (other favorites are Mango, and Dragon Fruit Lychee).
