Came here with my girlfriend on a Wednesday evening and was pleasantly surprised! We got to sample a few wines before ordering--love that the staff let us taste first. I was a little bummed they didn't have Riesling or Moscato (I'm into sweet wines ), but they did have Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. There's also rosé and red, plus a pretty big beer selection on tap . I ordered sushi and a salmon bowl from the Japanese bar , and my girlfriend got the hummus plate . The staff brought my food over so we could still sit and eat together even though we ordered from different counters. Super convenient! The food was about 3.5/5 --not bad, but not amazing either. What really made the visit worth it was the service--five stars all the way . Friendly, fast, and super accommodating. Atmosphere was another win: clean, bright, and relaxing . It wasn't too crowded around 5 PM, and there's a TV if you want to catch a game . Not sure how it is during sports season, but it felt really chill during our visit. Pricing is affordable--most wines by the glass are around $12-$14, which is reasonable for the area. Parking is easy , and it's the perfect spot to catch up with friends. This store was spotless, the fresh food was tasty, it was bright, and the employees were always so friendly. I felt like I was shopping in a small-town grocery store. I'm sad to learn that it's closed. I now live in the Palm Springs area, so I will be visiting the Rancho Mirage location. I love Gelson's Homestyle Guacamole, the deli department, their salads, and when the holidays arrive, it's a real treat to see all their delicious foods. Carmen in the Deli knows how to make a great sandwich. The Salads are delicious. It is not necessary to cook at home. Just drive to Gelson's, try the prime rib, roasted turkey, trip tip.The turkey enchiladas are the best. Also, the Chile relents are authentic! read more

This is a gourmet grocery store that sells name brand goods at a premium. BUT they do have a handful of specialty products that I won't find at Ralph's across the street. Gelson's can be found at the Oak Creek shopping center near Alton and Jeffrey. Parking is ample, they share the lot with other businesses but I never have trouble finding a close spot. This location was recently remodeled. They added a new hand-rolled sushi bar and wine bar, which is nice. Like most Gelson's, their prepared foods and cheese selections are top notch. I've given their poke a try before, but I prefer getting that elsewhere. The bakery inside is Viktor Benês, and they always have tasty pastries. The Stumptown Cold Brew with Oatly! looked interesting, so I bought one to try. It was smooth with a slight hint of chocolateness, I wouldn't mind getting it again. The Gelson's Peanut Butter Filled Dark Chocolate Bar was a one time purchase though. It could be a bit creamier inside, the filling was dry. As a UCSB alum, they get bonus points for having a large variety of McConnell's pints and single serve cups. The Salted Caramel Chip tasted just as good as it did when I was a student. You won't find me here often. Why spend $7.29 on a box of Cheerios or $11 on a pint of Jeni's when I can drive to another grocery store down the road and get it for less? Nonetheless, their products can fulfill all your household and kitchen needs, if you look beyond prices. So 3.5 stars, rounding up because I like McConnell's. read more

I've never heard of this supermarket chain. I was not even aware of a higher end chain available for supermarkets but here we are. A friend of mine who lives in the area took me here because he said this the place to go if you want neatly stacked, fresh produce and cooked food. I thought this was just like any other supermarket but boy, was I wrong? Have you ever seen fresh vegetables and seafood in a salad bar? I've seen it before but usually it's all old and dry like it's been sitting there for a while. Everything here was neatly stacked as my friend told me. Of course it is not perfect. The salad bar ran out of dressing but the space was very spacious, neat and clean. With that said, there is an upcharge for everything. Expect to pay a premium if you shop here. It is a great place for food but at a steep price. Would I come back here? Absolutely if I ever find myself in the OC area. read more

Last night, I bought a water and cracked it open right away in the parking lot and proceeded to chug because I was thirsty after a long day. Next thing I know I feel a scratch in my throat and notice some sandy, grainy texture in my mouth. I check the bottle and find that the glass had several chips at the top of the bottle under the cap. As a multiple decade amateur baker and recipe creator I can safely say the Gelson's bakery is about as good as Albertson's. BLUEBERRY SWIRL CHEESECAKE slice: -- small towards medium size -- good visuals but the "swirl" concept reminds me mostly of lesser cheesecakes -- texture is soft Chicago style which is my preference (along w/ricotta or Basque style) -- WAY too SWEET, it is a total sugar bomb that reminds me of inferior retail bakeries that pile on the sugar and not the flavor -- texture is great -- sweet is HIGH -- even the graham cracker crust tastes coated in sugar -- light blueberry presence via "swirl" concept -- nice thick graham cracker crust but sugar loaded unfortunately RATING = C- On the positive they sell Sweet Craft brand lemon ricotta cheesecake jars. I had one a while back and liked it. Unfortunately, the cost is borderline highway robbery. They cost more here than anywhere else I have seen. The Petit Pot rice pudding (w/vanilla emphasis) was too tempting after having their pistachio pudding, so I bought that. I will have to seriously save up the pennies and come here rarely or find it somewhere else or on sale. Inflation or not, this is ruthless. read more

Really disappointed in this place. The deli used to be incredible and everything was made with care. Today I got an inedible tri-tip sandwich and overly dressed crunchy kale salad that was all stems. The sandwich had hard grizzle pieces that could not be chewed. if they are going to charge $20 for a sandwich it better be made with care. This was terrible. 5 stars for the selection, and that's why I started coming to this location. Normally it's always great service and everyone is so helpful. Today, was different in the areas of the deli and checkout. I buy my groceries on my way to work. I understand that dealing with the public can be trying as I work with the public. Today, the deli staff could not be bothered and acted so sarcastic when an elderly woman asked a question. I almost walked away at that point. The worst offense was towards your own employee, an elderly man bagging the groceries. He quietly asked the checker, "How long?" She snapped at him, "I don't know, you have two minutes left." He quietly bagged my groceries then walked away. Even if he had asked her a few times and she was annoyed, she shouldn't snap at him and especially in front of customers. It was shocking and I felt so sad for the man. Do better. Smiles and friendliness goes a long way. We all feel the stress of life, but this was so unnecessary. read more

This is the second time I ordered (or attempted to) a catering pick-up order from this location. The first time I arrived and it was not ready on time. In fact, it was 3 hours late, which significantly affected my event. Today, I went online to order and missed the automated deadline by 10 minutes for the day I wanted to pick up. No problem...or so I thought. I called, and after 25 minutes of waiting, someone answered who then transferred me to catering/prepared foods who proceeded to tell me that if I couldn't order it online then...I couldn't order it. A loss of significant revenue for the store. A loss of reputation. And just lazy. Good news is that I called Whole Foods, who has a similar process. They happily (and immediately) took my order manually, entered it in the system and sent a confirmation. The BEST customer service. read more

They try to save the planet by using a paper carton bottom to the container. Yet..... their horseradish is wrapped in plastic!!! And they provide no soy sauce. Good flower selection. Good fish , meat & wine selection. Highly overpriced. Every shopper in every Gelson I visited is a over 60, who shops there 'thinking' they are getting premium products and they haven't the clue of prices. Great grocery store if your not on a budget. Great quality everything. Love coming here for lunch for their lunch combo, this gives me the opportunity to try all of their delicious and healthy side at a fraction of the price. The only think that dropped the rating from 5 to 4 is the fact that I have bought stuff from here that either is expire or had mold on it that I didn't notice until I brought it home, one was a pumpkin pie and the other is a whole chicken. If you are paying for quality then this should not be falling through the cracks on their side(management). Still go here for great items but now I'm more careful of what I purchase. read more

This is my favorite market because of the fresh seafood and meat. There produce and fruit are great. Customer service is outstanding. The cashier are always friendly and helpful in answering questions. They have beautiful flowers and plants. The bakery is always fresh and displayed professionally. All cakes are outstanding. Mainly reviewing for the bakery section as I don't normally shop at Gelson's. But I'm really impressed that they offer Princess Cakes among their pastries and other desserts! I was looking around to see where in Irvine would have Princess Cake in stock as the Swedish cake is not that easy to find (IKEA seems to offer their own variation). However, a quick search on Yelp revealed that Gelson's actually offered whole and sliced Princess Cakes so I decided to give the store a quick visit. Lo and behold, the bright green cakes were stocked and available behind the glass counter and I was able to order 2 slices of Princess Cake for just under $8. I wasn't too certain if I made the right choice purchasing grocery store Princess Cake but my concerns were quickly dismissed after the first bite. The texture of the marzipan covering the entirety of the cake had just the right consistency to give it a nice chew yet was soft enough to cut with the side of a fork.. The cake layer inside was surprisingly light and airy, and there was just enough jam between the layers to give each bite some fruity flavor. The cream was also fluffy, and the combination of all the different elements of the cake just worked really well together for me. The only Princess Cake I've had before is from Alcove Cafe in LA, which has their own interpretation of the cake. I've never really had the authentic version, but the cake here at Gelson's definitely satisfies a quick marzipan craving. I should note that Gelson's currently seems to be remodeling inside but they are open for business. read more

Then we ate out front at one of the round tables which was super clean. The store is undergoing some construction, but they have clean bathrooms and great service from the staff.
