Man, I wish we had Gelsons in Orange County. Everytime I am in the Sherman Oaks area, I do my best and try and stop at a Gelsons market. They have great Kosher foods and oraganic treats as well. Pretty expensive to shop here too. They remind me a little bit of the way Whole Foods design their stores. My favorite is the fish fillets in the deli area. as many others have pointed out this store has gone downhill over the past years and is experiencing real problems - it has a very unfriendly feel to it now and after my experience on 5/21/26 I don't know if I'll be returning unless fundamental changes are made - their Loss Prevention team decided to profile me again and this time stopped me at the exit demanding to go through my bags and check my receipt. I surprised the guy by not being guilty and was glad that Cindy from the Gelsons Staff was there as a witness but the incident has left me shaken and upset. There were also witnesses by the people who collect money for charity outside the back exit and am grateful that they were also present. Gelsons really has some employees with major personality flaws - not sure if it's a racial issue but you'll notice many others in reviews noting their profiling of racial groups - this is no longer a pleasant place to shop for me and I don't think I'll be back unless certain individuals are no longer at the store. read more

This is a huge Gelson's off of Van Nuys Boulevard and very popular with the locals. There are deli options, desserts and salad bars for those that work in the area, in addition to the regular items we all shop for on a regular basis. I found finding the items I wanted rather difficult, compared to other Gelson's markets, although I might just be biased using their La Canada Flintridge store as a baseline. Honestly? I straight up forget that this gelson's is here. Other than that it's a grocery store. It's exactly what you would expect if you're familiar with gelson's at all. Things that are specific to this location that you need to be aware of... First is the parking is weird, the parking lot in front of the gelsons on Van Nuys boulevard is just for the gelsons The parking behind the gelson's is also just for the gelsons but there is a shared lot and a Best buy lot on either side. Inside it's pretty much what you would expect, especially if you're expecting things to be expensive! This grocery store is fine, but it gets downgraded because of how expensive everything is. I've been coming to this Gelson's on and off for years but over the last few months I've been experiencing increasing problems from their products every time I come in. A few weeks ago I bought a cheesecake that had an expiration date of several days in advance but when I brought it home it was rancid and spoiled. I got the cheesecake because I' stopped going to their once superb bakery 2 years ago because of how poor quality the cakes and pastries now are. The rebrand from Victor Benes to whatever they have now was a massive downgrade..... Every time I go to the Poke bar their avocado is brown and stale and I'm unable to use it in my salads, and today I bought a Dubai chocolate bar that was slimy and stale due to probable improper storage...... Their hot food bar is never completely labeled so there's always items I have to go out of my way to the counter and ask about..... Last but not least... every time I come in their security guard that aggressively skulks around the store stares into me and it's incredibly uncomfortable trying to shop. I've been coming in for so many years but time to leave and switch over to Whole Foods. read more

I pranced in here because I was craving soup in the middle of the night. It was around 10pm so the hot soup bar was already closed and cleaned up. I was bummed because I thought my chances to get fresh soup was over. But after walking around a little I found that they have some packaged fresh soups along the first wall to the right when you enter. Great selection! I travelled 12 miles to get here because none of the many markets near me had the ice cream I wanted and they had it in various flavors. This Gelson market is located in an outdoor shopping center with a few other businesses and a good size parking lot. Getting here was relatively easy as it is freeway close. Parking was plentiful. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the hot food bar, full service deli and Humphrey's yogurt. Everything was tempting so I had to remain focused. As I walked through most of the store, I noticed they had a great variety of items that many other stores don't carry. The ice cream area had the best selection (suitable to my liking) that I have seen in a grocery store. Before I traveled here, I looked at their website to make sure my specific ice cream was in stock. The store was clean and organized with an old school feel. Customer service was friendly and helpful. The lines moved quickly as checkers came out when lines got to three or more people. Pricing was reasonable. I will make the trek here again without hesitation. *Dining tables for the deli, hot bar and yogurt shop were available both inside and in front of the store. read more

My local neighborhood Gelson's is pretty swell. I don't stop in much, but when I do building a salad for lunch via their salad bar is fun though pricey! Always well stocked from produce to pressed juice. The service is friendly and it's never too busy, even on weekends however they do stay busy. I've enjoyed some bready things from the bakery, plus Vicktor Benes does some amazing vegan friendly pastries. You can pick up solid wine deals, hot meals and not so inexpensive thrills... The plant based products always seem to be more marked up here compared to any nearby grocers or chains [even Whole Foods and Erewhon if you can believe that]. Great parking in a shared lot with neighboring business, but pro tip: more parking in their back virtually private parking lot off Milbank Street/Sylmar Avenue just passed Best Buy. read more

Yes, I am a little frugal...(makes shopping more fun)...So, there are certain things I refuse to buy here especially if I know I can get them somewhere else for less...just sayin They upgraded the "grab n go" section which is very impressive & super clean! They even have a "Poke Bar" if that's your thang. I am more of a "soup & salad" kinda girl. And let's not forget their infamous bakery inside...Vicktor Benes! So many yummy things Plenty of parking here in the lot. Gelson's has such good quality desserts here at their bakery section! I've tried several of their cakes before but their fruit tart is THE best fruit tart I've tasted. It comes with fresh, juicy fruits and the custard is light, not too sweet, and creamy. The crust is buttery and soft with the best crumbly texture to complement the sweet custard. I also recommend their coconut cake and strawberry shortcake as they make the cake so light, fluffy, and not too sweet! You can definitely taste the coconut, strawberries, and perfectly whipped cream! read more

The most immaculate grocery store I have ever been to. Immaculate. All other grocery stores should aspire to this level of organization, catalog, and presentation. I cannot remark enough how perfectly the items in every single aisle and section were arranged and displayed. The team that makes this happen should be put in charge of all grocery stores in the US. Gelsons is an upscale local supermarket chain and this location is very nice and convenient. They have a large selection of high quality products. On some ofcl my recent visits I really liked the fresh fruits, salad bar and chocolate cherries were amazing. Service is fast and professional. I drop a star for prices, below avg. value. I love this market. Been going to Gelsons to 40 years. Either century city or Sherman oaks. Always get their deli and hot food take out. Their chicken romano is a family favorite but unfortunately some of the pieces can be a little dry. We love all the chicken salads, tuna and egg salad. Their produce is the best in town and so is their meat. Now I mostly get it delivered with instacart but shopping in the store was always great and everyone there is amazing! read more

I LOVE SUMMER FRUITS So I was super curious about the Black Apricots. The cashier also hyped them at checkout. I picked up some for my mom and hyped them up playing to her curiosity... it runs in the family. They're NOT apricots at all. They're super dark velvety/ish plums. They don't have apricot seeds, they have plum seeds. They don't taste or have apricot texture meat... they ... are ... plums. They could be plums named Black Apricots because of their size... similar to the cherry plums. The BIG surprise... my watermelon was yellow... unbeknownst to me... perfect. I suspect grafted ... but it could be traditionally yellow. DELICIOUS. Get curious. Try something unexpected. Buy intuitively. It's Gelsons. You can't go wrong. Remember the days when the produce er would make recommendations? Now we have yelp! Oh, generally I prefer chilled watermelons, however in the case of the yellow, it was significantly more flavorful at room temperature in comparison to it chilled. Whichever permutation... ENJOY your SUMMER FRUITing. I think oranges are not in season. Peaches are about to embark on their best season. I don't think strawberries are summer fruits either... so much to learn. I have been shopping at the Sherman Oaks Gelson's for decades. When the Gelson's family sold the store this was the start of a slow but sure downward trajectory. It is my understanding that the employees hours were reduced to below 32 hours per week, so that the owners no longer needed to provide health care insurance. This changed the demeanor of every employee. But since the Japanese owner took over, the downhill trajectory has gotten steeper. Here are some things that I have noticed, and I have brought to store employees attention to no avail. The produce has slipped in quality, and things like cut watermelon are no longer prepared in the store. So the cut watermelon is usually several days old by the time it gets to the store. This makes me wonder if it is now being treated with preservatives. I buy Bellweather yogurt at $4.39 per cup, and I now see that approximately 1/3 of the cups are stored upside down in the refrigerator section. So when you take off the top, a large portion of the yogurt in the cup is stuck to the top. The same is true for the humus. The bakery is no longer Viktor Benes, and the quality has slipped. The deli is now terrible. The employees have a rude attitude and are often in the back and leave the deli unattended. The premade sandwiches use old lettuce and tomatoes. They are put in hard plastic containers. In many cases the container cannot close all the way because lettuce and/or meat is jambed between the top and the bottom of the container. And there is often an air gap of 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. This means that the sandwich is much more vulnerable to bacteria. And sometimes there is a gap between the top and the bottom of the container because the sandwich was not carefully put in the container. Yesterday I asked for a sandwich to be made, and the croissant was stale. There seems to be little to no employee supervision by managers at the store or by managers from the corporate office. These are some of the things I have been seeing, and meanwhile the prices keep going up up up...... read more

I was shopping for someone at this Gelson yesterday evening (9/18/2022) and did not have a great experience. I've been to this location before but it's been years so i wasn't familiar with the location of some items. Usually when you ask for help to locate an item someone will walk you to that location to help you find it or they will get someone to help you. At this location, the employees just point to somewhere across the store and tell you it's over there. One of the employees did walk with me to one location and tried assisting me. The rudest employee was the employee who worked in the front behind the cheese counter. I asked where can I find the dough balls and he pointed his finger and did not say anything. I had to verify that he was pointing me in the right direction and he said something rude as if I was irritating him and as if I should know that's where the dough balls are located. When I told him I'm shopping for someone else and I'm not familiar with where the dough balls would be located he just stared at me and turned away. How rude!! Also the security guard will follow you around the store for no reason and make you feel uncomfortable. Every time I looked up I saw the security guard which made me very uncomfortable. I hope the next time I come to this location I have a better update. I've never been to a grocery store where so many employees where just not helpful and rude. read more

I was in this Gelson's yesterday. A homeless man stole food from the deli. Workers did nothing to stop him and handed him anything he asked for: sliced meats and salads, which is fine I guess. Prices will go up and we will pay for it. What happened next I'm not ok with. This man exited then came back into the store. He went to the soup and salad bars and touched the tops of the clean spoons, salad dressing tops and everything he could. He had feces on him. Smelled terrible. Employees (who I know can't stop anyone any more - not blaming them) but they did not clean up after him or replace the things he touched. Felt horrible for shoppers who want to pay for a meal and will be eating feces. This Gelson's is run by the homeless. Don't eat anything at the open food bars. It's all contaminated. Someone needs to implement food safety here. We pay triple there and it should be safe to eat there. read more

Huge shout out in appreciation to Martin L in the butcher department in Gelson's on Van Nuys Blvd - he's a 10-star employee! We were looking at packaged meats as he approached and inquired whether he could assist. Told him what we were looking for, he put together a special package for our NYE dinner and pounded the meat for us as well. MARTIN L MADE OUR YEAR!! Ten months ago, we went to the Gelsons on Ventura Blvd in Encino. After shopping and putting items in our car, we needed to go to CVS across the street. The Gelson's security guard came up to advise us that if we walked to CVS - after already shopping at Gelsons, and he knew it as he watched us put the items in our car - our car would be towed since we were "no longer shopping at Gelsons" and hence, not entitled to leave our car in their lot. I've been living here in the Valley for 60+ years and have never been so offended by a total lack of care for a retail customer. Not only did we stop shopping at Gelsons - Encino, but our adult children and friends did the same. We'll never return to Gelson's Encino but will ABSOLUTELY return to Gelson's on Van Nuys, even if just to say hello to Martin L and see how he's doing. We all have many choices from Pavillions, Ralphs, Amazon Fresh, Vons, etc. Ultimately, it's the employees that make the difference in our decisions and Gelson's Van Nuys should be proud of their employees and the service provided! Here's a little update. This Gelson's is just so weird. I used to go to Studio City - always great. Lately, I've had to see an eye doctor in Encino just down the street from that Gelson's. THAT is an amazing store with great everything. And then we have Sherman Oaks. I don't get it. I'm there ALL the time. I but lots of stuff. And every time I'm there, day or night, whatever the hour, there's one or two checkout lines open. This is not why we shop at Gelson's, folks. Encino? ALL checkout lines are open. Same with Studio City. Sherman Oaks? Never. Ever. I was there yesterday buying my stuff. Two stations open, both with people with big carts of stuff. I turned to the manager or whoever was manning that station and said, "Could you please open another station?" She called for someone to come out - that someone never came out in the ten minutes it took for me to finally checkout. Please, Sherman Oaks, we love you but get it together, seriously. read more

There is a Gelsons two minutes from my home. Always stocked, always clean. Great bakery, the princess cake is the best cake in the world and in general gelsons is a better market. They also have good sushi. Not mediocre. It's fresh and you can see and taste the quality ingredients. However !! The sushi party trays are a different story. disappointing! We ordered two trays and the rolls were much smaller and the sushi fish was so thin almost transparent with too much rice. It also tasted a little different than the regular sushi in trays. Fish was dry and not tasty and rice had too much vinegar and sugar. We ate it but no one was very happy. read more

Another Gelsons with miserable staff. Brought back age sausage and sauce because the sauce was disgusting. Manager Jose tells me that he can't accept returns. I said you can't sell people bad meat and keep their money. So he tells me he'll make me an exception and goes on and on about what a favor he's doing me! Then as I'm walking away he pushes a carriage into my backside! Wow! I get to the register and there's confusion about my refund. They call Jose over and he announces so everyone around can hear that I used an EBT card. I just hate Gelsons. read more

Every time we go here (really any Gelson's it feels..), staff feels cold, unpleasant, and feels like they hate working there. Staff is diverse, but it's rare to find a consistent staff member who gives great customer service. It may not be Gelson's number one priority as far as training goes, not sure. This review is mostly for customer service and the $30 cake we purchased. For $30 (smallest cake we saw) I thought we would get a delectable, mouth-watering chocolate cake. See photo. The cake was mostly icing. It would have been ok, but the icing was not that good. The filipino market on Woodman in Panorama has better chocolate cake than this. I was sad we spent that much when there is also a local Ralph's that has chocolate cake that is to die for that is much less expensive than this one. The 3 stars is for cleanliness and the general feeling of shopping there. But c'mon, at least train staff to smile and ask customers "can I help you today?" I started shopping here with my grandparents before I can remember. But recently the store's security guards have been absolutely awful. One incident occurred when a guard came up behind me and grabbed me during a late night shop. I was in shock. I couldn't get an answer out of him as to what he thought I had done so I went straight to the manager. The manager didn't are AT ALL!! I tried to continue my shopping and as I walked up to the one cashier working the same security guard was just wrapping up his story about some "bi***" that shouldn't be shopping there. I won't ever go there again. Disregard for their customers and a strange policy about what their security service does makes me wonder how long it's gonna be before a woman is unable to shop there.
