Had been wanting to try this place out for a while, and I was excited to go with a few friends. The cocktail I got was delicious: the basil beauty. It was light and exactly what I needed in the late Texas summer evening as I was seated outside. They gave us multiple cheddar jalapeño biscuits as appetizers because it took them a while to get our food to us. The biscuits were really great and munching on them tided us over. For my main meal I got the Bucatini, which had scrumptious crab in it. It was just enough to make sure I was full, but nothing more. I LOVE Gemma and the staff. Everyone from the hostess to our waiter and bartender were all so helpful and nice. We're new in town and decided to try Gemma for our 5 yr anniversary. We were pleasantly surprised by the flavor in the food. Our order included the roasted squash (appetizer), chocked dish (pounded, rolled, seasoned and covered with the skin) and the trout. The roasted squash was a hit with us both! It was light, seasoned well and went well with the cashew hummus- like mash that was on the plate. YUM! The trout had so much flavor and was complemented by the beans and flavorful red sauce but was a little salty for my comfort. It was good enough to finish every last bite though. The chicken was also salty, didn't have as much flavor as the trout but was still pretty good. Beware of the scones! It's extremely hard to eat just one and they'll tempt you in making a meal off of them alone - they're SO GOOD!! We will definitely be back to try other options on the menu as I hear the rabbit pappardelle is really good. read more

Waited on a Saturday night without a reservation. On a beautiful Dallas night, Gemma offers some seats outside where you can wait for your table, or a seat at the bar. The bar seats are actually held and managed by the hostess , so if you want to sit at the bar as we did simply make the request. The selection of wines by the glass isn't extensive, but it was easy to find a good red Syrah that was tasty as a warm up before dinner. Sitting at the bar we were well attended to by Peter. First were some fresh oysters, they offered selections from Massachusetts and Alabama and we sampled the two from the north colder water, both were excellent, served with a vinaigrette and VERY tasty lime and ginger beer slush, and I think it had a jalapeño in it as there was a hint of heat. Yum. The bottle wine list was terrific, both in geography and types of wines. We had a nice Rioja from Spain, Marques de Riscal I believe around $80. In very nice fashion they opened the wine and added it to a decanter to help open up which was needed as it was a 2005. And it took a little while to open up and improved through the evening, very much showing its terroir. Decided to also try the mussels, which were served in an asian themed coconut and lemon grass broth. The toasty bread and broth were better than the mussels, which seemed a bit overcooked and rather shrunken versus a nice perfectly cooked meaty treat. For dinner we had a pasta with pancetta and mushrooms, it was very nice but a bit too salty it seemed. Also was a nightly special of red snapper served over roasted carrots. The snapper was excellent, and the carrots were pretty good, a bit inconsistent. There are a lot of things on this menu I'd like to try. Wonderful time here a few weeks ago for a birthday dinner for my boyfriend. You definitely need to make reservations as the restaurant itself is pretty small but it's totally worth it. We showed up 30 minutes early and we sat outside on the patio while we waited for our table. We were promptly greeted and our waiter immediately came over to take our order. I tried one of the white wines on tap and it was delicious. Another thing I loved is that they were able to quickly transfer our drinks over to our table when the table was ready. We started off with a bottle of red and the burrata, which was delicious!! So creamy and great flavors. We really enjoyed. My boyfriend got the steak frites which he said was his favorite so far in Dallas and I got the rabbit pappardelle. The pasta was creamy, the rabbit was perfectly stewed and there was plenty to eat for both entrees. The complimentary bread was also wonderful. Service was great and our waitress was super attentive. The ambience was nice and food was pretty good. We ordered the shrimp with pancetta, pumpkin fritters, and the braised rabbit. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing, my wife said she would've been happy with just more of that for dinner. Pumpkin fritters were okay, not great but not terrible. The Fresno jam tasted bitter and didn't add much to the actual fritter. The rabbit pappardelle was good, very tasty although quite rich and heavy. Overall it was a great experience, the only suggestion I would have is if you are going to have a kitchen open to the dining room, the kitchen staff in should be dressed accordingly...the lack of chef coats or any sort of uniformity in the kitchen was not a great first impression. read more

I hadn't noticed, but they did. My entrée had taken too long to deliver. The server apologized and the house manager delivered my meal. A wine refill followed. This is a restaurant in control of itself. What a wonderful main course, Chicken Porchetta ( ever hear of that?) I'll remember this roll of silky tender poultry for a long time. With just the right of heat and flavors banging all over the plate, this was great. The Radicchio Salad was good with roasted pear and a ricotta base, but the presentation was sloppier than I expected. The Fig dessert was perfect ( ie small!) Loved this place! Gemma is a really cute and cozy spot. I remember having a good experiences years ago so wanted to go back to see if the hype held up. Our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. The cocktails we ordered were well done. With that said, the food is definitely not blow your socks off. Maybe we chose wrong, but ordered the rabbit pappardelle (apparently the most popular dish on the menu). It was soupy, sloppily thrown together, and the rabbit bits looked like watery tuna out of a can. Did enjoy the olives to munch on. The tuna tartar was very lack luster. What a wonderful birthday dinner for myself. Of course I had to bring the boyfriend along. We set an early reservation and they were nice enough to give us a big table for the two of us along the banquette that way we could be one of those couples. The somewhat nautical decor was very nice and what I would expect out of a place in New England along the shore. We started fresh oysters and moved along to their okra dish and had their special red snapper and their salmon dish as entrees with a side of their fried veggies. Oysters were very fresh. The okra dish was prepared perfect with some crack sauce. The snapper and salmon were also very good, the sides accompanying the fish well. The fried veggies were my least favorite; probably because of the chunky cuts and obviously being the most boring. Desserts were the blackberry crostata and ganache. Very decadent and not too heavy. Perfect meal. The cocktails were also great. The watermelon and gin was most refreshing. Service was perfect from start to finish. Highly recommended for date night or small groups. Mostly small tables inside, not sure what it's like on the patio but it looks comfortable for something more casual. read more

We went on a Friday night to celebrate my partner's birthday. Reservations were easy to make on Open Table. Originally they were made for 9 pm, but I got a reminder call on the same day and was able to change them to 815. Parking is valet only, but you can validate your ticket after dinner. The service is excellent here. They knew ahead of time that we were celebrating a birthday, and several employees came by the table to wish her a happy birthday. We also got a complimentary starter of fried olives and spiced pecans. They were fresh out of the fryer and tasted so good! I'm not even a fan of olives but still ate one. The sommelier suggested amazing wine pairings. We started with mixed raw oysters with a sampling from North Carolina and Massachusetts. Omg I think Gemma has the best oysters in the city! They're served with a mignonette and jalapeño granita. You don't even need the fixings, though, because these oysters were perfectly sweet with just the perfect briny liquor. We also ordered burrata served with prosciutto and this amazing pickled rhubarb. Delicious! Beef tartare and crudo rounded out the appetizers. I think the mains are where the food was lacking just a little bit. We ordered the brined bone-in pork chop, halibut, 5-spice duck breast, and pappardelle. The halibut was crazy dry, and the pork chop was salty with little other flavor. The duck had a very pronounced 5-spice flavor and was served with undercooked rice. Like a really overpriced duck fried rice that was just meh. The pappardelle was super yummy! The pasta was perfectly al dente. I just wish there was more of it. We ordered the mushrooms and artichoke as sides, and they were just ok. To round off the meal, we got a sampling of 6 sorbets and ice creams. The most unique sorbet they had was an oolong tea flavor. I would love to return for late night happy hour to get at those oysters again! They need to start it a little earlier. 10 would be good but 1030 is too late haha. read more

Maybe my underwhelming dinners at Gemma were caused by high expectations set by local food critics or yelp elitists, or perhaps by the fact that I ate at two true Napa institutions (The French Laundry and Terra) 1.5 months prior to my last visit...regardless, I just wasn't overly impressed with Gemma, and nor were my guests. Gemma is located on Henderson road near Lower Greenville area. Valet parking, although complimentary, is required. Both times I have had reservations, and Gemma has been prompt in seating me upon arrival at those times. The restaurant itself is nice. The tables are quite close together, however I never felt "cramped" nor felt that my conversation could easily be heard by other diners. The restaurant volume is moderate, but not loud enough to prevent good conversation. The drink menu is quite extensive (beer, wine, cocktails). Good variety of offerings. Bread service comes frequently (the in-house made breads are fantastic). At both visits, I tried several appetizers, salads, shareable plates, and a few of my guests entrees. I do enjoy the menu at Gemma - approachable menu without being too extensive, unique items, creative. A few of the items on the menu read better than they actually tasted. Some recent items were flavorless (Crudo), while others were incredibly oversalted (ribeye special). Some items were table hits (artichokes, turkey meatballs, ricotta cavatelli, duck breast). Overall, mixed reviews on taste from my dining guests. The servers have always been incredibly personable, charismatic, and friendly each time. I think the service could be a bit more polished for this caliber of dining - (three different waiters came to our table asking for our drinks unknowing that they had already been taken, water was mistakenly poured into my wine glass...yes seriously, but they did replace the wine). Regardless, the dinner service was like clock-work. Very little wait time between dishes. I enjoyed the ordering of served dishes as dictated by the kitchen. Water was quickly filled when low. 5yrs being Yelp Elite...I can honestly say this is arguably my favorite restaurant in Texas. Stellar service, romantic yet invigorating decor, and most importantly phenomenal food! Everything, every single item from cocktails to appetizers to entrees and sides blew my mind. The first two cocktails I got were the old fashioned of course and the BLOOD ORANGE MARGARITA. What the heck, it was spectacular. It was so hard to decide but I had to get another blood orange, I would drink that cocktail with every dinner if I could. The OYSTERS were extremely fresh from both the west coast and east coast. (TIP: They have a late night menus after 10pm with $2 oysters) The ARTIC CHAR TARTARE is a refreshing new spin to the classic tuna tartare. Served paired with their homemade chips. The SWEETBREADS were so delicious. I mean how many restaurants have you been to in Texas that serves sweetbreads? The CHARCUTERIE plate had the best prosciutto I've ever had, along with pickled vegetables, homemade raisin infused toast, a pate, and a rabbit mouse. For entree, the GRILLED STRIPED BASS, a flaky white fish so fresh it melts in your mouth. Juicy and flavorful because the chef knows his stuff, letting the freshness speak by itself. And as a side, I must must rave about the MAITAKE MUSHROOMS! omg...what an experience. I will order 2 orders of these mushrooms next time. Slightly more crunchy texture and has a lighter, less pungent flavor than shiitake or any other mushrooms. I've never had anything like it. An absolutely perfect dining experience! We took Gal Pal's mom to Gemma for her birthday and, after being warmly welcomed and seated, she was presented with a birthday card and a complimentary appetizer of fried green Castelvetrano olives and warm Texas pecans. Very nice and appreciated. The olives were VERY lightly battered and delicious (as were the pecans). The three of us decided to share plates and ordered the following: - Roasted Baby Artichokes - Mussels - Turkey Meat Balls - Papperdelle The Roasted Baby Artichokes came with very flavorful arugula, a poached egg (not my thing) and a very nice vinaigrette. The Mussels were dressed in a coconut lemongrass broth with Thai basil, cilantro and chilis. Also not my thing, but I did notice that they disappeared very fast once Gal Pal put her eyes and tastebuds on them. The Turkey Meat Balls had a fantastic tomato sauce (or "sugo", if you want to impress your friends) and grilled crostini; the complementary tastes resulted in something even more wonderful than the tasty parts. Everything was fantastic but the star of the night was absolutely the Pappardelle. The bits of braised rabbit, pancetta, Swiss chard and thyme were laden on the broad pasta noodles in a light sauce that carries an amazing flavor that will stay on your mind for day. To accompany our meal, Gal Pal had a Gemma 75 (No. 209 Gin, Lillet Rose, blood orange, lemon, honey, Courtâge Sparkling Rosé) and we shared a nice Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. I must say I love Gemma restaurant! At first things did not go well, we ordered drinks and food and they food did not come for over an hour. Our waiter told us the machine didn't input our order (or possibly he forgot to place the order), either way - mistakes happen. The manager came out and apologized and offered to pay for our dinner. We politely declined - but really respected the gesture. The waiter also apologized profusely. The food came out promptly after and every dish was amazing and memorable. The chef even came out with dessert for us and new things off menu for us to try. They really made it up to us and cannot thank them enough for a delicious meal. Oh, Gemma, Gemma, Gemma, I love thee. It's a privilege to have you in my neighborhood, and I hope to know you better. I want to try out the patio in the summertime. I do love me some sweetbreads, and Gemma had them on the menu, so of course I had to try them. They were lightly breaded, and fried to perfection. They were neither too bready or too oily, just crispy perfection. My companion had the veal cheeks, which were tender and delicious and served over spaetzle. Perfection. I love the cozy, casual atmosphere here, and the warm and attentive service. In addition to the aforementioned patio, they also have a nice bar. The wine is served at the proper temperature from their glass-enclosed wine cellar. In sum, a very classy but laid-back atmosphere, good food, and good service. What's not to love? read more

Having now had three separate dishes at Gemma, I'll be the first to say that I got it wrong with my first 4-star review: Gemma deserves 5-stars, and is among the best restaurants in Dallas. Period. The below review mirrors my initial review in many ways, but with updates to incorporate my other dishes. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? I'll be honest - this is more often than not a bit of a gimme star, but the service and atmosphere here at Gemma really are among the best in the city. The vibe is very seaside East Coast, with white wood and blue accents nicely setting the stage whether you're with a date or a larger party. It's open seating at the bar, but even then there's often a wait so plan accordingly. While I fully intended to wait a bit for my Rabbit Parpadelle, it came out in no more than 8 or 10 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. To top it all off, it's clear that Gemma brings in a nice mix of those who reserve it for a special occasion and a handful of regulars who simply love the food and drinks. Everyone from the managerial folks to the servers and hostesses make a point to get to know these people, which is always a nice touch. No complaints. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Make no mistake, $26.75 is a lot of money for a smaller pasta dish (and later dishes were roughly between $25.00 and $28.00), but Gemma is one of those places where they truly walk the walk in the quality and atmosphere department, and when that's the case, I've no issue adjusting my mental price points. Had this been $30 that would have been too much, but what a sensational dish that I was more than happy to pay $26.75 for. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? What a truly fantastic dish this is. Rabbit isn't something I've had often, so I was honestly unsure of what to expect, but I don't think I could have asked for much more. To start, the pasta was clearly homemade, and was perfect, with a nice and thick flat noodle that was coarse enough to pickup the flavors of the broth and butter while being perfectly cooked with just the right amount of firmness. The rabbit itself was shredded and mixed into a fantastic sauce that I can't quite place, but it brought out just the appropriate game-y taste, which is something I look for as a distinguishing factor when eating something like rabbit. The whole dish was brought together with finely chopped onions and some other seasoning that truly did have me longing for more. All in all a fantastic pasta dish in its own right, but bonus points for being so unique and uncommon. A later visit to Gemma had me served up the highly acclaimed homemade pasta with wild boar ragu, which was equally sensational to the previously discussed rabbit dish. Another unique protein with delicious homemade pasta and a real unique flavor to bring it all together. Of additional note here is the appetizers. I'm not one for fresh oysters, so I opted to get the Turkey Meatballs, which were absolutely incredible. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? While I was initially unsure with so many other good options in the city like Abacus and Knife, multiple visits to Gemma has solidified them as one of my favorite dining options in the city, and I'd gladly come here daily as they rotate their seasonal menu. They were decent and fun to try every once in awhile. TURKEY MEATBALLS tomato sugo, grilled crostini They were good but nothing beats the meatballs at neighborhood services. BAKED OYSTERS leeks, guanciale, jalapeño, gruyere I don't normally eat oysters but I liked them but maybe I was just buying into all the hype and making myself think everything here is good? BRAISED VEAL CHEEKS Tokyo turnips, baby carrots, cipollini onions, bacon, black pepper spätzle Super tender and very tasty - one of the highlights of the night. WILD KING SALMON spring pea and mint puree, cardoons, English pees, pea tendrils I didn't taste it since I don't like Salmon but my friend made a happy clean plate. RICOTTA CAVATELLI braised lamb, dandelion, shimeji mushrooms I love pasta and I don't think it can be done better. The lamb played second fiddle. PAPPARDELLE braised rabbit, pancetta, Swiss chard, thyme Once again I LOVE pasta and the rabbit plays second fiddle. CHOCOLATE CARAMEL PINENUT TART toasted marshmallows, vanilla bean ice cream My favorite dessert of the night. Love chocolate and marshmallows. The hubby and I had a terrific dinner here last night! It's nice to see a small restaurant with great atmosphere and a Hamptons-esque vibe move into this challenging location on Knox Street. It really adds class to this little strip mall. It was quite full and folks were eating at the bar - I recommend making a reservation. We kicked off the meal with rich and wonderful Baked Oysters. He got a Manhattan and I had the Blood Orange Margarita - yum! Easily the best Blood Orange Margarita I have ever had. He had the Flat Iron Steak, which comes with frites and chimichurri sauce. He loves the chimichurri sauce and was really happy. I got the Veal Cheeks - OMG, Leslie Brenner is right! So good!! And the sauce, onions, and root vegetables are just amazing! We also tried the Brussels Sprouts, which are cooked in duck fat and served with thick bits of bacon, so how can you go wrong there? Finally, we got a selection of sorbet and ice creams - Blood Orange Sorbet, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Meyer Lemon Ice Cream, and Chocolate Ice Cream. These are all made in-house, and while all very good, our favorite was the perfectly creamy Vanilla Bean! We were pleased to learn that they also do a late-night menu, and are looking forward to coming back to try more delicious menu options. Gemma would get 5 stars from me for their service alone -- impeccable! -- but, luckily, their food is outstanding and 5-star-worthy as well. My fiance and I went for my birthday this year, on a Thursday. We were seated promptly. The complimentary bread and butter was fantastic and our waters never got low. We started with the mussels appetizer which was good, but not great. My fiance got the flat iron steak which was cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. I got the pappardelle with braised rabbit after hemming and hawing between that and the brick chicken. I will most definitely be back for the chicken, but am so glad I chose the pasta dish. It was phenomenal -- I finished the entire thing. Portions were generous, but not huge like 'Murican's love so much. To finish, we got the strawberry rhubarb semifreddo. It was delightfully refreshing and a perfect end to the meal. They brought the dish out with a lit candle and "Happy Birthday Emily" written on the plate in chocolate. So thoughtful! I would really give this restaurant 3.5 stars but upped it to 4 because it has so much potential, and I hope it gets better as they work out the kinks. I liked how Gemma isn't your normal Dallas restaurant: American with a southern flare. I just got back from Napa last week, and Gemma's food and decor really does have a Napa vibe. The rosemary-sea salt breadsticks were delicious, as were the yummy scones served in the breadbasket. But the entrees fell a little short of what I would have hoped for...the pasta came out lukewarm as if it had been sitting under a heating lamp, and my chicken entree had literally a half cup of olive oil dumped on top of it... And when we got to the dessert menu, nothing really sparked my interest--a little blah. But I really want to like Gemma and, because if its potential, will try to return in the upcoming weeks. read more

If you want to dine here then you can place a reservation by calling the restaurant or Open Table it. I guess this is what makes this place a bit more exclusive? Although it's located on the far side of Henderson, it still has a smidgen of charm. What I like most about this place are the complimentary fig scones that you can smear salted butter with. You also get a choice of still or sparkling water! They also have a very interesting list of cocktails made with fresh ingredients such as blood orange, meyer lemons, and fresh fennel! Not only our service was superb, the manager and owner came by our table to ask if we were doing during our dinner service. They also thanked us for coming by. As for the food we had the Turkey Meatballs for starters. Which was plump, juicy, and coated in some kind breading that binds the ground turkey together. The marina sauce is at the bottom of the meatballs, which isn't overly acidic in tomatoes. The dish comes with 3 meatballs, we added an extra meatball for $3.oo more. For the main course, the portion size are not too big but not too skimpy. You will probably need to add sides. Ricotta Cavatelli: the boar ragu wasn't really gamey and wasn't overwhelming. The pasta was al dente and wasn't overly starchy. It was a decent hearty meal and I would totally order this again if I were to come back again. Pappardelle: shreds of lamb shoulder that was moist and tender atopped of homemade ribbons of pasta. I like how the lamb tasted almost like shredded pork. The typical taste of lamb was definetaly masked in this dish, which I like b/c there can be times when lamb tastes too gamey. As for the pasta, I would have preferred that the ribbon of pasta was a little bit more then since it was cooked al dente. It would make it smoother and easier to eat in my opinion. Veal Cheeks: Tender and moist that has a bit of marble within the cheeks. It came on top of a skillet of mixed carrots, turnips, pearl onions and HUGE a bit salty chunks of bacon. The bacon is not the traditional bacon that you would envision, but pieces of cured bacon/ham? It was kinda of tough for me to chew on so it wasn't my favorite feature of the meal. read more

Came here during my trip to Dallas, and their food was really good. Service was as expected from a high end restaurant. Definitely a good place for a date. Loved the decor. They have huge mirrors on the wall, which makes the place look bigger than usual. Food: GRILLED STRIPED BASS- This was delicious! It had cauliflower puree, roasted cauliflower, and fried chickpeas. The sauce was great. Nothing too overwhelming and it brings out the flavor of the fish. PAPPARDELLE- First time trying rabbit. I know I'm usually against this because I've had a pet rabbit before, but I was curious and this did not disappoint. Meat just melted in my mouth. Flavoring was perfect. Made me want more. Went to Gemma last night for dinner for the first time and it was to celebrate my Birthday. This restaurant is EXCELLENT! The food was fantastic and the service was top notch. The drinks were fabulous! I highly recommend this place. All the staff wore masks and there was a bottle of hand sanitizer at each table. The tables were spaced far apart. The smell...the smell once you walk inside of Gemma immediately made us want to walk out. But, we felt that would be rude since we were promptly seated to our reserved table. The only way I can describe the foul odor is something of a wet animal smell. But, maybe it was the beautiful creams, blues, and greens throughout the restaurant that made the experience more welcoming. It reminded me of being out at a beach house in the Hamptons or somewhere. Not that I've been to the Hamptons, but I've seen enough on tv to have an idea of the scenery. The only other reason I can guess that we didn't get up and leave from the bad smell was because of the nice service we received from all of the workers. We started with a bottle of wine, along with the Turkey Meatballs. The meatballs were amazing, generously drenched in a hearty, flavorful tomato sauce. For my meal, I ordered the Sea Bass, which came with lima beans and pinto beans in a broth. My fish was cooked perfectly and went well in the broth. The colors inside of the decorative bowl were so refreshing. The Artic Char was equally wonderful that I was able to taste. The dark sauce that accompanied the char brought the dish up a notch. We initially came here for the Romanesco Broccoli and the Brussel Sprouts, but after seeing that they were both taken off of their menu, we settled on the Grilled Asparagus. The asparagus was good, but I was disappointed that I couldn't try the other two options that brought us to Gemma. Overall, the food was great and the experience was charming.
