One of the experiences we have had in awhile! It took us 6 weeks to get this reservation for our anniversary and it was well worth the wait! The service was incredible. Every detail was taken care of! When we arrived they had a sweet card wishing us Happy Anniversary. Very nice! The food is amazing. Cocktails are also very unique and worth a try. Turkey meatball were delicious as well as the onion rings! Must try those onion rings with Creme fraiche. Greek salad great with pickled purple onions. I tried rabbit for the first time and I must say that dish was INCREDIBLE! My husband had the duck and love it as well. To finish off we tried the semifredo. It was perfect for a hot summer evening. Gemma's perfectly sized bar and dining room is dimly lit, with calming light blue wood paneled walls that remind me of a chic Hamptons restaurant with a modern twist. We were welcomed with a smile and immediately taken to our table which was conveniently located by the kitchen - my favorite spot in any house. The kitchen is bustling but you cannot hear a thing as waiters and waitresses pass with beautiful plates of food. Once you sit down you are given a homemade fig biscuit, which is a little crispy on the outside but tender and flaky on the inside, as well as a homemade bread stick (nothing to write home about here). I chose to start with the Roasted Artichoke as an appetizer and finish with the meatballs. Both are small portions but it ended up being more then enough food. My husband ordered the Ragu and my aunt ordered the duck confit. Of these four items, I thought that ragu was outstanding - with a lighter meat sauce that was not overpowering or super heavy and paired perfectly with the cavatelli pasta. My Artichoke was absolutely delicious, with a light lemony arugula salad and fried egg - which you have to immediately break and toss, so that a little yoke touches every part of the plate. I may or may not claim to be a meatball connaisseur, but I will say that I was a little disappointed in their meatballs. They seemed to be coated in breadcrumbs which made them heavy and a little dry. The red sauce had a bit of a smokey flavor which I wasn't all about. The presentation and portion size was perfect, with two delicious pieces of thick grilled toast. I think they just need to revisit the recipe. My aunt's duck was perfectly cooked, it too having a light smokey essence, but lacked a certain pizazz that I was expecting - some type of balsamic reduction or pesto (or combo of the two) would have been amazing. Gemma is my favorite place to come too on the weekends. The service is so friendly and fast. The bbq short ribs are amazing, the seasonal desserts like the blueberry cake with sorbet is to die for. It definitely lives up to the hype! Service was on point and the little scones at the beginning are a must. I had the artic char which was served very rare and my date had the quail. Both were excellent! You can also split a salad if you're not that hungry - a service they actually offered. For parking, you can valet and have it validated at your table. I was lucky enough to find a spot near Sushi Axiom and didn't have to deal with valet at all. But that was random luck as that parking lot and the surrounding streets are always packed. They can also switch your tab from the bar to the table which is a rare courtesy these days. read more

My fiancé and I shared an absolutely lovely dinner at Gemma a month or so ago. We were able to get reservation for a time right after opening. It appears like a reservation is near required for a table on a busy night, but maybe a bar spot might be free. After the doors opened up, a couple other couples with reservations were waiting, we were promptly greeted and escorted to our table. Our server was very polite and quite attentive throughout the meal. We started off with cocktails which took a bit (a minor knock) but were tasty. I tried the Alpinist which I enjoyed and my fiancé asked for a chocolatini (not on menu) and she really enjoyed it. We were served complimentary bread and butter which was good. We ordered two appetizers, the fried onion rings and the burrata. The onion rings were good and quite filling but honestly nothing overly remarkable. The burrata was a little disappointing. While everything was fresh we just were hoping for a little more. Peas seemed like quite popular in the dishes which I assume is due to the spring time. After our apps I think my fiancé and I were both a little disappointed. But any disappointment quickly dissipated after we received our respective entrees. The pasta was amazing. My fiancé had the cacio e pepe and I had the pappardelle. Both dishes were exquisite to look at and mouthwatering good. We decided to press our luck and try dessert and boy were we glad we did. At the recommendation of our excellent server we did the olive oil cake. Soooo good! We also mentioned to our waitress that were celebrating our recent engagement and she surprised us with complimentary glasses of sparkling rose. All in all, while certainly not a cheap date, we loved our experience at Gemmas. Food is amazing! I came here around midnight and the waiters were friendly and did not rush us. Sparkling water and valet parking are both complimentary. I tried the oysters (don't remember which ones) but they were both from Virginia and tasted very fresh and clean. The Grass-Fed Beef Tartare was well seasoned. Pappardelle was amazing as the rabbit wasn't overcooked or anything and the noodles were fresh. I usually hate tomato sauce, but this sauce was light and well complimented the rabbit and noodles. The crispy veal sweetbreads was good too, although I could have done without the dressing on the frisee. It was my first time having the throat of veal and it was a first good impression. Also tried the duck fried rice. The duck was super tender and the rice had a char like crunch to it, which was awesome to have a different texture added to the mix. Although, it was a little greasy. I wouldn't be able to eat the fried rice as a whole. My favorite item from the restaurant: fig and gouda cheese scones with the sea salt butter. My sister and I asked for some to go, and since they throw them away at the end of the night, we were able to get a good handful of them. read more

It totally lived up to the hype. The service was superb. We were made to feel as if we were guests in someone's home. The owner even came over to chat with us and let us know that our baby is welcome anytime. That was such a good feeling. We love delicious food but are hesitant to take our baby to nice restaurants. Of course he was well behaved and if he hadn't been we would've taken him outside, but we were made to feel completely welcome. The food was fabulous. We began with the tartare, calamari and fried olives. All were delicious with unique flavors. The calamari was the epitome of Spain on a plate. It really took us back. My experience at Gemma was good but not what I'd been anticipating. My expectations were very high due to reviews I have read an a lot of hype around the restaurant. The service was very good. We were a table of 4 and apps were good. I had the kampachi tartare which was good and the others at the table also enjoyed their apps but were not wowed. One person had the beef tartare and felt the chop on the beef was too large. For main I had the duck which was over salted. The leg was a bit burnt and bitter and the seared duck was not rendered enough so it could not be chewed enough to swallow which was a disappointment. When the waiter cleaned our table and asked about how the dish was ... he did not seem phased by the comment about the fattiness. We also tried the wild boar pasta which was excellent and the chicken which was very good. The maitake mushroom veg side we ordered was absolutely delicious. For desert I had the persimmon olive oil cake which was just lovely and went perfectly with the accompaniments. We also tried the chocolate trio which was ok. I don't think I will be back as there are other options on the Dallas food scene that are a lot more appealing. read more

Came here yesterday evening at around 5:15 for my birthday dinner. It's a small place so we had made reservations for 4 about 2 weeks in advance and they were already pretty booked. It's a cute restaurant and nicely decorated. Tables are a bit close together so kind of hard to get in and out of and can be a bit loud depending on who is sitting next to you. When we arrived the hostess wished me a happy birthday and shortly after we were seated the waiter brought me a card wishing me a happy birthday! They also gave me the olive and pecan appetizer as a birthday present! Which were delish by the way! They bring around complimentary pieces of bread. It was smoked Gouda and fig (not sure if this changes) but it was delicious! I ordered the duck, my bf had the porkchop, my sis the salmon and her bf the steak. All the entrees were very good and they do a nice job of incorporating fresh and local ingredients into the entrees. We also had the pineapple and caramel sorbets (you get a scoop) which is perfect for me because I'm usually pretty full after entrees, it was nice and refreshing. We picked up their Family Dinner on Saturday and it was outstanding. This meal and Four Wood Smoked Salmon from Lover's Seafood have been our top 2 takeout dinners during the pandemic and we have a pretty large sample size. We wondered if there would really be 4 servings of everything. There were! A very good value for $85 considering quality and quantity. Portion sizes were perfect except the charred shallot cornbread. We got 2 larger pieces and 2 smaller pieces. The Family Dinner menu changes every week but the watermelon gazpacho (which was excellent) and grilled Caesar salad are on their regular carry out menu. The beef cheek stroganoff was also very good especially the house made noodles. As has been the case when we've dined in at Gemma, we found the chef has a heavy hand with salt and the stroganoff was a little too salty for our taste. The whoopie pies for dessert looked small in the box but were a rich and satisfying end to a very good and interesting meal. Can't wait to see this week's Family Dinner. One more note, the packaging was excellent and well thought out. Everything packed in a box and the stroganoff in a heatable pan. read more

Have mercy on my pallet..this place has me in a blissful state and I don't want to come down. From the moment I walked in I knew I would be in for a treat, eventhough this place has had epic reviews they leave no doubt when you walk in. I took a seat at the bar, since I walked in at 5 which is when they start service, I was impressed by the whiskey/bourbon selection . the menu is simple but advanced at the same time. started out with the roasted vegetable salad and it was a clean example of how something of this caliber should be presented. Ordered the swiss chard salad and the sea bass. Both dishes are fresh and full of flavor - bass was especially delicious. They make very creative use of nuts (pine nuts on the swiss chard, hazelnuts on the bass) to add new flavors and textures to what some may consider traditional nu american plates. I was very impressed with the cuisine here. I've been here several times the second time was much better than the first time. The host is very nice and seated us at a very nice table inside the restaurant although there's also a patio on the outside. The chef really seems to know his stuff every dish was delicious. in particular we really love the mushroom soup the sweet green salad was really good too. I would also suggest Stopping by sometime it's my favorite restaurant on Henderson Avenue. Also the bread biscuits they bring to the table with butter are really amazing. Gemma is a fun spot for innovative food renditions. My daughter and I decided to dine on a rainy Tuesday night, so restaurant was not crowded. We split an amazing salad, the Cavolo Nero (dark kale) with castel vetrano olives, fresno chili, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, and garlic oil with lemon. One of the best salads I have ever tasted, amazing flavors beautifully plated. My daughter chose the Chicken Porchetta, on soft polenta, with roasted fennel, mushrooms, with madeira jus. It was very tasty, but not what she was expecting. I had previously tried one of their fish dishes, which was great. This time, I opted for a large grilled Pork Chop, on a bed of sweet potato mash, braised collard greens, and pickled okra, with green garlic butter. I was definitely pleased. Dallas has been surprising me with amazing food. Gemma is really close to being 5 stars for me, and if I were to go again and have an experience equally great or even greater - I would tip the rating over 4 stars. To begin with food, everything we ordered was delicious. The fresh and warm scones they gave out were spectacular, and I could've had an infinite amount more of those if it weren't for everything else we ordered. The heirloom tomato salad with burrata cheese, and crispy squash blossoms are MUSTS, but the turkey meatball was great as well. All of the ingredients tasted incredibly fresh, and nothing was too salty or too bland. For the main dishes, we got the squid ink bucatini, flat iron steak, and the forbidden fried rice. We ADORED the fried rice, which was very unique. The combination of crispy quinoa, thai basil flavor, and chewy duck confit was perfect. As for the bucatini, I wish the pasta noodle was cooked a little bit better. I was the most disappointed with the pasta, but maybe it's because I was the most excited for it. The steak was also good, but not cooked to its best. We ordered medium rare, but you can even see in the picture that it's not as juicy as we would have liked it to be. Nevertheless, all of the food was really great and I would go back and reorder some of these. Dessert was FABULOUS in so many ways. Very unique ice cream flavors and beautiful presentation. You have to try at least one every time you go! In addition to delicious food, service was great. Our waiter was very accommodating, and the manager took the time to walk us through the wine list and made perfect recommendations. Overall, my friends and I felt very cared for, and we ended up having an amazing time. We used to be regulars and it used to be great. The sommelier has changed (much to our chagrin) and on a recent visit while sitting at the bar we had some of the WORST service I have experienced at any Dallas restaurant, much less one of the supposed caliber of Gemma. After being seated, we were ignored for over half an hour, while other parties around us were served. We received no greeting. No water. No query on beverages. Nothing. It was like we were invisible. And we're two big dudes that wear lots of color - hard to miss. When the bartender finally got around to us he was curt and completely classless. Instead of paying attention to all the patrons equally, he spent the entire time gawking at a young woman with her top hanging out (which might be slightly excusable given the weeknight, but they weren't even a good set). All in all, we will think twice before returning. What was once an incredible and classy restaurant with panache in spades, has been reduced to an overpriced restaurant staffed with awkward twenty-somethings looking for an alternative to their apparent failings at tinder. This is the first review I have ever left that wasn't positive. My wife and I ate dinner here for our anniversary tonight. We made reservations a few weeks back. I received multiple calls asking my wife's name which was nice but I had repeated calls for the same information. Upon arriving, we checked in. This place is sooo small and crammed feeling. Not their fault at all, but our table location was this tiny table at the end near where the pick up food and bathrooms are. This is not the place to go for a romantic date. We didn't know that but, again, not anyone's fault. This place is pretty loud. We could barely hear ourselves talking because of the yelling in the kitchen that continued the entire meal. The only thing that we had tonight that was like, wow were the scones. They were good! Also, our server was great. No complaints there. We had a few cocktails, pretty good and no complaints. We ordered the calamari. It was $14 and a tiny serving and it was not good at all. We were thinking it would have had flavor, but it tasted pretty rubbery and tiny serving for the price. The salads were underwhelming. Nothing special. Caesar salad just had a handful of croutons that were way too crunchy. Never had one in my life like that. The entrees were okay at best. I got the pork chop. Perry's pork chop is our favorite and didn't quite expect that, but it was okay. The sad thing is it was pink in the middle and eating undercooked pork is not something I wanted to try. My wife got halibut. It was okay. Nothing overwhelming. Definitely not close to Eddie V's in cook or flavor. The dessert was blah at best. It was a pineapple tres leche. It had like one spoonful of cake on the plate, no joke. For the price, it was disappointing again. I see all of these writings on the plates on yelp pics but ours wasn't written on or anything for our anniversary?? Sadly, this was our first and last time here. We had high expectations and broke away from our favorite places to dine in Dallas to try something new and we both felt like it was as wasted anniversary dinner which is unfortunate. I had a pretty solid meal here last weekend. The wait for a spot at the bar was a bit on the long side but it was Friday night after all. All of the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The menu had a lot of great options. I ordered half a dozen oysters, the Caesar, and the striped bass. The oysters were fresh but I do wish they had provided cocktail sauce in addition to the traditional mignonette sauce and some cool green topping (I forgot what it was and will update if I remember). The Caesar was very fresh as well, the lettuce was crisp, there was exactly the right amount of dressing, and the croutons were addicting. I wish there were more of them. The bass was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I didn't really care for the quinoa risotto it came with but the dish was still good. read more

Loved this place! Picked Gemma last Tuesday as we were visiting. We had one of our three nights in town dedicated to having a higher end meal. I picked Gemma based on reviews and the interesting menu. The BEST veal sweetbreads I have ever had and I eat them all over. Very light breading, creamy/soft inside, and very clean taste. Was paired with some citrus frisée and candied citrus fruits believe. Really good sized portion of mussels. Delicious coconut broth. My swordfish special was delicious. Served over a sweet potato hash. Wasn't that crazy about my date's braised rabbit pappardelle. It was little too fatty, rich, and sort of one tone. Maybe needs more of the greens in there? The pappardelle pasta itself was awesome. Perfect texture. Cocktails were great. Ambience and vibe is wonderful. Has a modern, small, but not cramped feel. Lots of white and metallic colors but not too bright as the lighting is dimmer and perfect for my taste. Can't wait to go back! read more
