I ordered a couple sandwiches through Doordash tonight: Gene's Atomic Sub (Large) and Roast Beef (Large) based on the rave reviews on Yelp. The subs were tasty but... the amount of meat on the sandwiches were only a few thin slices. The meat and veggie portions were very uneven. It was more veggies than meat, which tasted more like a veggie sandwich sub. I could not even taste the meats in the sub sadly. I've been a customer of Submarine Center at West Portal for years and there is no comparison with their subs. It was definitely not worth $17 for a Gene's sub. read more

Remember hearing about this place a while back and decided to give it a try and no regrets here. Picked up regular-sized ham and cheese, and a salami and cheese. Both were warm subs and both were delicious. Have been here twice in one week and also tried the chicken sandwich as well. Ordered it through Yelp and sandwiches were ready for pickup when I got there. The second time I had to wait a little since the app was acting wonky, so worth the wait. read more

I started coming here, or sending my son to get a Cactus Cooler. I don't see it many other places. Orange/Pineapple flavor and Fred Flinstone's favorite drink. Sweet memories spending heat waves wearing WonderWoman underoos, drinking a Cactus Cooler and watching cartoons. (An 8 year old me loving summer vacation !!) Some do's: 1. Do try a Cactus Cooler! 2. Enjoy the music :) - there is a TV screen that let's you know what's playing- 3. Yes, the sandwiches are yummy and when it's crowded it may take a few minutes to get a sandwich, but it's worth it! *The bread is nice and soft thank goodness! This place is a SF gem. Hidden away in the outer Avenues on Taravel Gene has been making epic subs for many, many years. It's a unusual suspect hidden in a liquor store. If you haven't had Gene's sub, you haven't really had a sub. I suggest the infamous Attomic sub. read more

We were working nearby and the workers said this is a great place to get a sandwich so I figured why not.. I was really looking forward to eating that day. We made it inside and it's a decently sized corner store market with a tiny station in the front corner for the deli. My sandwich wasn't bad and I went for the regular. Nothing to write home about but I still ate it. My work partner on the other hand had a way worse experience.. he wasn't too fond of the bbq chicken that he got and his chips and soda were both expired by about a month. I dont like to leave bad reviews and the lady was really nice so I'm hoping it was a bad day for them. There were plenty of people doing pickups for to go orders on sandwiches so I trust that they're regarded in the community to a point at least. The expiration dates is what made me feel the need to speak on the negatives to this establishment. Not everybody will be so laid back seeing or consuming things that aren't fresh. While spending half the morning at the dog park with Jaime, it was time for lunch and I was getting hungry. I was in the mood for some sammich and I realized I had bookmarked Gene's Liquor for a while. I drove to the Sunset and arrived at approximately 1300 hours. Parked across the street and there were two customers ahead of me. COVID guidelines in place and signs posted inside as well as markers on the floor. I took this time to browse the store while studying the menu. It definitely has that beloved neighborhood look and old-school feel. When it was my turn, I decided on the large Gene's Atomic Sub ($13.50) with Turkey, Pastrami and Corned Beef served with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese and secret sauce on a French Roll. Unfortunately, they do not have Dutch Crunch as a a bread option, but I did ask for it to be toasted. I got into a pleasant conversation with the owner and told her I used to go to Lincoln and shared my year of graduation. I assumed they had been around since I went to school there, but she said that she bought the place around 20 years ago. I asked where she gets her meat, but she only replied that they come from the best cuts from a purveyor that only offers high-quality meat products. OK...high expectations. I thanked her when she was finished creating my sammich and we exchanged pleasantries. I was impressed by the size since it's similar to Little Lucca's. I drove to Stow Lake to enjoy my sammich and I was waiting for it to wow me after my first bite. Also, for the price point, the portion of the meat could have been more generous as it was lacking in layers. It looked good lengthwise, but didn't have the girth to it. After several bites, it was just OK and the quality of the meat didn't impress me either. They tasted like regular cold cuts you can purchase from a supermarket deli counter. Just my honest opinion. Although it was OK....it didn't live up to expectations, especially when she mentioned she only gets the best cuts. The owner was very nice though and I will definitely give 'em another chance and try their other sammiches. 3 1/2 stars. read more

I've had sandwiches from this place before and enjoyed their food. But, this last time was very disappointing. I ordered the pastrami sandwich pictured below. The sandwich had too much mayonnaise and dressing and as I ate the sandwich, I had to continually scrape off the excess mayonnaise and dressing. In addition, the service was very poor. After we ordered, we waited 10 minutes and drove to the location, which was about 15 minutes away. So, in total, we thought 25 minutes would be enough time for our sandwiches to be ready or close to ready. My partner went to check on the food with the sandwich maker and she yelled at him saying that she needed more time and scolded him for him coming in before she confirmed the order was ready on Yelp. We waited another 10 min and our order was ready, but still an unfriendly sandwich maker. While I don't like to give low ratings for small local businesses, I did not appreciate the poor service and bland food. read more

After avoiding Gene's in recent times due to its demise during the time Hamik's ex-wife rode the business into the ground, I returned on a whim to find that Hamik was back and operating Gene's Liquors once again. He explained to me that the ex is completely out of the picture with regards to the business and he now has full control. I ordered a regular Atomic Sub to determine if it has returned to the quality that it had during the prime years. He asked me if I wanted everything and I said "make it the way you eat it" and he said his includes extra jalapeños. As expected, everything was perfect in the slightly toasted sub with a great balance of Turkey, Corned Beef, and Pastrami. I let him know that his Liquor & Deli was/is an institution in the Sunset District and that it's great to have him back! read more

When I walked in, I spoke with the owner, who was extremely personable and friendly. Ordered the Atomic, along with some basic sundries (hey, it is a liquor store, right?). Very quick turnaround, went back to work and unwrapped the sub. H-O-L-Y S-H-I-T. This is what a sandwich is all about. The bread with it's toasted to perfection, crunchy and flaky deliciousness. I can't believe it's been 10 years since my last review. I've been coming here longer than I care to admit (because it shows how old I am) but this place is still amazing. It's my favorite veggie sandwich, period, and it is the place my husband always requests food from when he wants me to bring home dinner. I have only ever ordered the veggie sub but my husband and friends have had the other sandwiches and liked them all. I ordered my sandwich over the phone today and when I went to pick it up the woman behind the counter was erratic and rude to say the least. I asked where the owner Hamik was and she started screaming "Fuck you. This is my store! I'm the new owner!! Get out of here! Fuck your bitch. Get out of my store." Needless to say Gene's deli sandwiches are not what they used to be and the woman running the business now is psychotic. My brother in law was getting some work done at the house and we needed to grab a bite of grub to get through the day. There's a popular deli at the corner so we walked over to check it out. There was a big sign out front calling their sandwich the best in town, so you know I had to give it a try. I ordered the large atomic sub for $8.35 with some chips and the whole thing came out to about $11. Not the cheapest sub in town to be sure. However, they did load it up with three kinds of meat and all the fixin's and it was a pretty darn good sandwich. I don't know if I'd call it the best though. It's a really convenient place to grab a quite lunch before hopping on the train, but all items are significantly marked up. Sandwich quality was excellent and the ingredients were very fresh. I'd drop by again in a bind but it wouldn't be an everyday thing. Service was outstanding though and the boss was extremely helpful and happy! Lines are long most of the time and the guys don't work at lightning fast speed but they're super nice and the SANDWICHES ARE DELICIOUS! A large is $9 add extra meat $3.75 and additional avocado $1.20.... Comes out to be a pretty expensive sandwich but try it and you'd be a loyal customer for life. This sandwich does NOT follow the Little Lucca / Roxie's sandwich formula consisting of a hearty helping of meat (and everything else) on Dutch crunch bread. The amount of meat is seriously underwhelming, however the rest of the sandwich comes together very nicely. I'm usually a fan of cold sandwiches, a la hero subs of NYC, and this sandwich reminds me of just that (soft roll, oil / vinegar), only heavily toasted. The picture below shows an atomic sub, made of three meats. There are 1-2 slices of each meat, making the meat flavor simply a complement of other flavors in the sandwich, rather than the focal point. For the price, this felt like a scam. But, the sandwich does set itself out from the rest due to it's unique flavor, which is heavily driven by oil / vinegar, mayo, and onions. Skip this sandwich if you don't like these profiles, or if you don't enjoy heavily toasted, flaky bread. Ordering these cold is just not worth it. Homeboy behind the counter is super cool, and I whole heartedly recommend giving him your business. To say that this lady who owns this liquor store is rude and disrespectful is an understatement. Yesterday was my first time ever to step into this store. I went in to redeem my one dollar for a superlotto winning and wanted to buy more tickets. She hurriedly walked to the front counter and muttered under her breath saying that she was very busy. She took my ticket and announced that I have won one dollar indeed. So I pulled out 4 more dollars and placed them on the counter telling her I wanted to buy superlotto, 5 tickets please. She had my one dollar winning in her hand. She gave me the tickets and when counting them, I realized that she only gave me 4. I said calmly," I am sorry, I gave you 4 dollars. You are supposed to give me 5 tickets." Omg, something just snapped inside her brain and she started to scream at me. She said, " you told me you are giving me $3 and that you wanted 4 tickets." I said politely, " no, I placed $4 on the counter. " And she screamed again and said, " next time, just go get your tickets from another place! " After realizing her mistake, she gave me the 5th ticket. Then she screamed, "You always do this to me! The other day, you came in and I couldn't help you because I was making sandwiches and then you kept on walking back and forth outside my store!" My jaw literally dropped! I didn't know what to do and how to react. I yelled back at her ,"You're crazy, you are a psycho! ". As I was leaving the store, she continued to scream at me. I was literally shaking from this encounter but went back inside and yelled, "you're crazy" a few more times. Entering this store is like walking into a landmine!
