Ignore the nasty reviews from the few. This place is good, real good. I moved here 20 years ago from Boston. So finding authentic Italian in Houston was a stretch to say the least. The guys who own the place are from NYC. They know Italian and they're on site every night. The food is just really good. Casual, family restaurant, privately owned, neighborhood appeal to Memorial area. Pretty diverse menu, healthy choices and also the Italian standard dishes done well. Solid wine selection too. I stopped in at George's yesterday evening for a to go order. While I was waiting for my food Ryland came over and sat next to me. We started talking and had a great conversation. One great young man, that I can say is going to go places in this world!!! It was so refreshing to have a great conversation with such a great young man. I learned so about him in the short 10 min or so I had to chat with him. Of course I went for the food, but until he goes back to school I will be dining in, just to see his happy smiling face! I almost don't want to post this so this place stays a hidden gem. I went there for the first time on a Monday night (1/2 price wine!!) with my mom and everything was wonderful. Even though it is casual (some guys wore ball caps and people had on tennis shoes), the food is amazing, the wait staff are friendly and professional, and the wine and food choices are top-notch. I had the seafood risotto, and I wish I could have eaten it all in one sitting! My mom is picky about restaurants, and she was very happy the whole evening! We are lucky to have this local family place in our neighborhood. It is a small Italian joint with great food and a great staff! Fancy enough inside for an intimate special dinner for two or with friends and casual enough for little league team victories :) The food is very good here. On a recent visit, I tried the Chicken Angelina, which was a chicken breast stuffed with spinach, prosciutto and cheese, dressed with a portobello mushroom sauce and a side of pasta marinara. Oh my goodness!! Another favorite Italian restaurant of mine. I had an early dinner with my boyfriend. I love everything here. Service is quick and staff are super nice. We ordered fried calamari for our appetizer. For our entree I ordered Penne Rene & my boyfriend ordered the Rigatoni Campagnolo. While we waited for our food. They gave us hot crispy buttery garlic bread. YUM!!! I love their fried calamari, it was crispy and cooked perfectly. The marinara dipping sauce was amazing with the fried calamari. My Penne Rene skinless breast chicken dipped in an egg wash & sautéed with scallions, marinara, cream, topped with feta cheese & fresh basil. The chicken was moist and tender. The marinara sauce is so perfect. I also love the fresh basil touch. My boyfriend had the Rigatoni Campagnolo imported rigatoni pasta with mild Italian sausage, peppers in a ricotta tomato sauce, with goat cheese and fresh basil. He ate it all. He loved it too. The dinner portion is just right. But since I filled my tummy with all their delicious bread I had to to-go half of my dinner. Yay lunch for tomorrow! Additional information I wanted to share. We discovered George's Pastaria on our third day after moving to Houston, and we have found our Happy Place! We were greeted and treated like family. When a restauranteur is truly interested in pleasing his patrons with his offerings, you can tell. After spending a decade in Europe, we were truly pleased to find a world-class wine list and flavorful Italian dishes that really satisfy your soul. If i had written this review a couple years ago, I would have given this restaurant 4 stars, but we just recently went back last week...and the quality has definitely gone down. That's not to say the food is bad, but it's standard-fare. If the prices were just a couple dollars cheaper per item, I'd go with a 3-star review for sure. Calamari - standard Garlic Bread - standard Rigatoni Campagnillo (not sure about the spelling) is probably my favorite dish here. Tiramisu - is not amazing, but is still good. All in all, I'm a bit disappointed because George's is a close to home Italian restaurant that my wife and I enjoyed coming to, but sadly I don't think I'll be revisiting here again. read more

We stopped by around 2:30 on a Saturday so the place was practically empty. We were promptly greeted and were given the option to sit wherever we wanted, so we got a table near the bar because of the TV. The service was great, they all worked together to get stuff out quickly. We had waters to drink, the complimentary garlic bread, fried cheese appetizer, angel hair primavera and cheese ravioli in marinara entrees, side Caesar salads, and peach cobbler for dessert. I gave them three stars because the food was just ok. Not bad, but definitely not great either. Some of the garlic bread came out burnt, but it's complimentary, so what are you gonna do, ya know? The fried cheese was not at all seasoned, but the marinara was decent. They don't actually have a "Caesar salad" on the menu but they gave us side salads with a creamy Parmesan dressing which was cool and pretty tasty. I got the angel hair primavera which was good, but it could have used more flavor/seasoning and the same could be said for the cheese ravioli that my husband got. I think the biggest disappointment though was the undercooked peach cobbler. The doughy part of it was still raw in the middle. Bleh. It's kinda far from us so it would have really had to be stellar for us to come back anyway, but it definitely missed the mark for us. read more

So the taste wasn't the problem, the food tasted great, the problem I had was the portion size and how stingy they were with the prosciutto. I ordered the Penne Arastiana, that's not the exact name but very close. The menu description listed that it came with prosciutto so I'm here thinking they'll give me 3 or 4 slices of cold cut style prosciutto. The amount of "prosciutto" I got was 6 minuscule pieces of what I actually think was super tiny slices from the side of sausage. Complete B.S. if you ask me. I realize they're running a business and trying to make money so they want to serve the smallest amount possible but that's just bad business. If I owned a restaurant and I was charging $18 an entree on average I'd at least serve fat, healthy portions. I probably won't be returning, but if I did my uncles Chicken Marsala looked decent. read more

Great thin-crust pizzas, memorable salads (best take on vinagarette in the city) and first-rate entrees make this a worthy destination for anyone in need of an Italian fix. All the traditional favorites are there (and well represented) but George's is a great place to try something new. Fun wine list with a bunch of inexpensive selections. Dave knows his vino, and won't steer you wrong. Lovely, laid-back atmosphere. You'll find everyone from couples on a date to families to groups of friends starting a night out. Went out to lunch with a couple of the guys. And realized this place has a giant parking lot. Maybe this is a fad lol. But the entire place is really neat and nifty with the darken earthy tones making it really homey. We were immediately sat by the servers and were asked what we had wanted to eat. George had his wife's car serviced where I work. He was so pleasant and explained that he likes to do business with small business owners (locals) such as himself. He talked highly of his wife being the wine enthusiast and their huge varieties of wine they offer. That impressed me, a husband/wife TEAM. As winter approaches, I have to store more fat to keep warm so what better way to then to eat tons of Italian food. We walked into the restaurant and it was pretty busy as it was a Friday night. The choices were sit inside (wait 10 minutes) or sit outside (with no wait, covers, heaters and a huge TV). It was an easy choice to sit outside because it was a nice night or was it? The first waiter opened the bottle of wine I brought with us ($10.00 uncorking fee) and glasses of water. After reviewing, the menu I knew what I wanted but, it took another 15 minutes for another waiter came to take the order! Boooo! I put an order of steamed mussels and Linguini Pescatore with a Cesar side salad. The linguini came out before the steamed mussels. Wait a minute, that's not right! Apparently the waiter forgot that steamed mussels order. D!oh...not a big deal because the pasta plate was huge! There was large amount of mussels, shrimp, clams, scallops and calamari drowning in a tasty marinara sauce. The marinara sauce was seasoned perfectly with garlic and tomatoes. The garlic bread was also a hit. I ate the entire pasta plate! My mind kept saying more but, my stomach was full! =( After a shaky start with the slow not attentive service and missing the appetizer order, the service picked up. Sweet family joint with a nice interior and super friendly owners. I got the Seafood Maximo, and the seafood was perfectly cooked, while the sauce was a little bland. Overall it was a little expensive for my taste, but a fun experience and I would suggest it to others on a Monday for the half-price wines and (very) full price, home cooked pasta. read more

This is one of the best neighborhood restaurants ever. They have incredible food and even better service. They care about their customers. The owner is almost always there and will come and talk to every single table if he is there. He even brought us our food tonight. Matt is one of the best waiters, and since he only works the patio, we'll sit outside whenever the weather permits. The only improvement they could make is their craft beer list (according to my father...because I don't drink beer. I just drink Prosecco when I'm there). They allow you to bring your own wine, but they charge a corking fee, but I'm not sure what it is. It's definitely one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I love their pizza and their George's body builder, but I also really like their chicken Marsala too. Everything is great! They're absolutely wonderful and always put the patron first! read more

I tried the spaghetti with meatballs and sausage. The sauce was really good, they use the same sausage I use when I make sauce. Meatballs could have more flavor. The two soups I got to go where good. I liked the leek and chicken soup, it was very unique and flavorful! But the pasta and bean soup was not as up to par as I'd like (I'm very bias because my Italian grandmother made the best) maybe try and see for yourself. Overall, it was great food. read more

I was driving through the area and decided to try this place out one day for lunch. Seems to be a popular neighborhood spot in the area as they had quite the lunch crowd. I opted to go for the 'cheap eats' lunch special, which was basically your choice of pasta and one of the soups of the day poured ATOP the pasta. I have been coming to George's for quite literally over 10 years. I love this place. I've tried most of the menu, and I've never been disappointed. This is my go-to Italian restaurant. They really treat you like family and all the food is made in a way that feels like home. From seafood, to pizza, pasta, to dessert, you cannot go wrong. The only thing that isn't 100% perfect is sometimes the younger staff isn't the best. I prefer grandma or any of the older staff. But even the younger waitstaff don't take away from the quality of this place. read more

Today was my 3rd time picking up togo food and as always, the food was awesome. George was so nice when I placed my order and was even nicer in person. I have yet to order something and not like it! Lobster ravioli.. delish, the crab cakes-amazing and the chicken parmesan was delish as well! The strawberry cheesecake from Bagel Bobs was so good, now I have to go visit the shop itself. This was my go-to place for Italian when I lived in Houston. The two dishes which are the biggest standouts are the rigatoni campagnolo and the chicken leek soup. Rigatoni campangolo is tangy in a tomato cream goat cheese sauce with peppers and sausage. It is reminiscent of a tikka masala, but without the curry flavor. It's hard to explain. But if you love strong flavors, try it. The chicken leek soup is creamy deliciousness. I wouldn't suggest ordering it with fettucini alfredo though because this would be a cream overload. It complements the above rigatoni campagnolo much better. (The fettucini alfredo is quite good also). IIRC the lasagna is also quite good. My kids like the pizza though I've never ordered it. Probably the only thing I've tried that I wasn't thrilled with was just plain spaghetti with marinara & meatball - the marinara wasn't too exciting. The meat sauce is better but nothing can compare to the Rigatoni Campagnolo. The service here is usually terrific. Several of the servers always remembered us when we came in (probably because I'd always ask for my rigatoni campagnolo without basil and my honey would have his with basil -- I don't dislike basil but it upsets my tummy). Honestly the only server we ever had problems with (and problems is really too strong a word) was with one of the former owners, Dave (mention of Dave mysteriously had disappeared from the menus last time I was there so I am guessing he is no longer an owner - I hope it was an amicable split!) Dave was a nice guy with a good sense of humor, but was a bit forgetful as a server. He also told the same joke every time ("one rigatoni campagnolo with extra basil for the lady") which isn't bad but humorous. Really he was just a little forgetful sometimes. But he's not there anymore and all the other staff has been terrific. I go here whenever I come back to town which sadly isn't often. read more

It's good to have a neighborhood Italian restaurant that serves tasty dishes. We've frequented this place many times over the past 10 years or so. We re-discovered it a month ago and ate there 2 Tuesdays in a row. Their food has improved quite a bit. On one of those nights, we ate fast and furious because there was a line of people wanting to eat. Also, our server kinda wanted us to go after we ate because they picked up our dishes pretty fast. We understood, it's a family restaurant and plenty of families were getting dinner. No matter, it's an accessible restaurant for us to go for good Italian food. I am a big fan of their beef ravioli. Just be careful not to fill up on the bread that they bring to the table, which is very good. If you add a salad you have a wonderful lunch. It is just a little more than what I want to pay for lunch but the quality of the food and service is worth it Don't let the outside of the building fool you.
