04/07/2024. Two friends and I stopped in at 930am for breakfast. There were people waiting outside and the place was packed inside. I took this as a good sign. I had already found all the great reviews of this place, and was super excited to experience it. We had a 15 minute wait for the three of us, which is not that bad at all. Luckily it was a nice and warm sunny morning. We got seated by a very friendly lady who put us in the back of the restaurant which was perfect as the restrooms were right down the hall. I had the biscuits and pork sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and hashbrowns. I totally, like tots, enjoyed every single bite. I was impressed! The food was fresh and probably the best hashbrowns I have had in a very very long time. The coffee was nice and strong too. It was really the high light of my day and I felt the portions and the prices of all the items was very reasonable. Only down side - expect it to be noisey cuz this place is hopping! So much so that the Seattle Mayor came in with an entourage and was seated behind us. Not that I care about such things but thought I would put it in my review. This place is a must when you're in the Columbia city area. My favorite brunch spot since they have the best french toasts in town! Not too soggy, but not too dry. Just a bit oily in my opinion. I would recommend to get a cup of fruit to go with it. Another favorite thing from the menu is chicken fried steak, the portion is big and it comes with 2 slices of fruit, 2 eggs and some hashbrown. Every single time I've visited Geraldine's it takes a bit to get in, and there really isn't anything fancy nor unique about this place yet it's special. This no-frills, diner-style breakfast joint serves good ol' classic dishes that the Gilmore Girls would eat, and that's something every neighborhood needs. In my last visit a group of four of us came around 10AM on Saturday and the wait was about 40 minutes, which was not surprising. Once we were seated our server came by with menus, and asked if we wanted anything to drink. Oddly enough, I always have a difficult time deciding what to order here because I'm not too big on hearty breakfast meals. For breakfast I'm usually good with coffee and a croissant and call it good, so you can imagine the predicament I was in when I was here, trying to decide between a breakfast item, what Geraldine's does well or a lunch item. In the end, I went with the Biscuits and Gravy over the Turkey Sandwich because if I'm gonna eat at Geraldine's then I damn well eat breakfast. It may not have been what I normally eat for breakfast but I didn't regret my decision. The Biscuits and Gravy came with a side of hashbrowns, fruit and two eggs, cooked to your liking (I ordered mine poached). The food didn't take long for us to get, and I was pleased with my entree. It was a big portion; and though I don't usually like pork sausage, the gravy was tasty and not too salty. The same could be said for the hashbrowns, too. It wasn't too salty, which I hate with homemade hashbrowns, but it was good here. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly, and loved the runny yolk I slathered my hashbrowns with. I love biscuits, which is primarily why I chose this dish, but have to say that it wasn't the best. It wasn't as dough-y or fluffy as I would've preferred, but it wasn't bad either. Love this diner! Super friendly staff and their food is consistently good. You can find free 2 hour parking a couple blocks away, or pay parking within the area. Highly recommend their French toast and chicken fried steak. FRENCH TOAST (5/5): They have different toppings each time, but every time I go, it's poached peaches or mixed berries, which aren't that exciting or special. Obsessed! I can't believe I've never been here. On Monday, I actually drove from Belltown to try flour box cafe, but when I arrived they were closed Mondays. So, we went to another coffee shop across the street and asked the barista for breakfast recommendations. They suggested Geraldines counter. The harvest omelet (I think it was called that) the one with feta and grilled onions, was RIDICULOUS! I'm not even an omelette person but my sister and I wanted savory and sweet so we got one of each and split them both. The omelette was TO. DIE. FOR. Each bite melted in your mouth. The honey peach French toast was also amazing. And the hash browns were so tasty they didn't need hot sauce or ketchup-- i've never felt this way about hashbrowns in my life. Summary: In an era where Millenials and Gen Z'ers flock to restaurants based on how Instagrammable the food and interior decor are (how the food actually tastes is just a superlative), Geraldine'is a throwback to no frills dining and soul refreshing food. Growing up my father (a foodie in his own right) always taught me to seek out long lines at restaurants because the lines would be a leading indicator of the quality of food. The longer the line, the better (in most cases, but with the advent of Instagram, now ya never know). And there is almost always a line outside Geraldine's, including the day I went. P.S., I went during peak brunch hours on a saturday and the wait time was only 30min. Upon entering the restaurant, I won't lie, I was a bit fearful that I was in store for greasy, diner food based on how diner-esque interior of the restaurant, but I shoved my Millenial privilege to the side and was determined to have an open mind. And from the moment my friend and I were seated, we were not disappointed. The service was absolutely perfect- our waitress was warm, engaging, and had the perfect balance of "not checking on us too much but also making us feel loved" kind of service ya feel (we've all been there on both ends of the spectrum). Anyways, I'm rambling and let's talk about the food because great service and a dining atmosphere without great food ain't enough to make me spend 20+ min writing this review. We ordered: 1. Peach French Toast $12 (5/5 Stars): This seasonal french toast was as the Gen Zer's say, LIT NO CAP. I'm personally a pancake kind of guy, but this french toast had me thinking about converting. The french toast has a carmelized, crunch exterior and a fluffy, warm inside. It wasn't too sweet and the peaches were a nice compliment. This is the best french toast I've had in Seattle so far! 2. Pancake of the Day, Buttermilk $10.5 (5/5 Stars): Now usually I like to get my money's worth with pancakes and spice it up with choco chips or blueberries- but the waitress sold me on the simple Buttermilk pancakes, and she was not playin! Each pancake was perfectly made- warm/fluffy with the perfect density and not too dry. There was also this amazing strawberry butter and the homemade syrup was on point. 3. Emerald City Scramble $13.5 (5/5 Stars): People ask me whether I'm a savory or sweet brunch guy, and I always respond with I gotta have both, especially when I'm out to eat. Now I normally don't get scrambles because in my experience, there's usually about two eggs worth of scrambles and I'm like I can get 24 eggs at Costco for $4 and this scramble is gonna cost me over $10? Nah! But this scramble was the best scramble I've had. The hashbrowns are perfectly cooked with the eggs and the combined with the spinach, pork sausage, pepper jack, it absolutely melted in my mouth. Plus I think they might have used 3 eggs lol. So clearly I'm a fan, and highly encourage anyone and everyone to show some local business love to this amazing establishment. I will be back! Really delicious breakfast/brunch any day of the week, any time they are open! Be ready to brave a line if you go at a regular brunch time on the weekend! I had wanted to check out Geraldine's after driving by and seeing the long line. If people are willing to wait hours for brunch, it better be good! I tried to avoid the line and went around 2:30pm on a Sunday for a late lunch. We were seated for 2 at a table without any wait. The restaurant was still full of patrons even by closing time at 3pm. Corned beef hash is my go to for brunch, and theirs did not disappoint. The beef chunks were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with good flavor and mixed with enough veggies to trick me into thinking it was a healthy brunch option. Not that we tried to be healthy--we ordered the tator tots side which is a MUST if you like tator tots...wonderfully crispy and hot! The one disappointment, unfortunately, was their famous french toast. I did like how crispy it was (what crazy person likes floppy french toast), but the pieces were thin and didn't have the decadent, chewy inside that I was hoping for. Might just be a personal preference though, as I see many other reviewers have raved about the same dish. Yesterday we went to Geraldines and had a BLAST! We are regularly there and decided its time to start yelping so here we go! We went with a group of four and ordered -2 orders of french toast (strawberry toppings this time) -1 slammin' with pork sausage, scrambled eggs, and sub pancakes foe french toast. -biscuits & gravy -chicken fried steak. The french toast at Geraldine's is always INCREDIBLE. I know we as Americans like to smother everything in butter, but this is one of the few things thats actually got no regrets attached to it later. Light and fluffy on the inside with the perfect crisp on the outside! Everything else we ordered was a great combination to balance out the sweetness of the french toast. A group of us (5people) came in a few days ago for lunch. According to their Yelp page they do not take reservations. Ok so the 4 of us walk in while the last person was looking for parking. Put our name on the list. Waiter comes over and says party of 5? Are you all here? Told him she was outside parking. He then tells us "we dont seat until all of the party are here"... Finally I was able to eat at the infamous Geraldine's Counter being in the Columbia City area today. Having many family and friends in South Seattle that have had breakfast or brunch here, have always told me "You have never ate at Geraldine's?!" I finally can say I have ate here and can vouch it is so worth it. The place was very busy being a Saturday and I was sat in less than 10 minutes which was great and sat at the bar counter. I ended up ordering the Emerald City scramble because I'm a big egg vegetables and meat lover when it comes to breakfast foods and it was amazing. My server was great and highly recommended the French toast and coffee cake. Peer pressure got the best of me and I decided to order 1 single French toast and I have to say "IT WAS THE BEST FRENCH TOAST I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE." The French toast was soft on the inside crispy on the outside, was served with thin slices of pears and it was so delicious, and this means a lot coming from someone who isn't a breakfast bread person. What an awesome spot! This is the revitalizing Columbia city area and coming to this place feels like going back to the 1950s, it's a bright cheery place with a retro counter for quick bites. It also has a great set of tables in the back. Despite the great look though the food is thoroughly up to date.
