Let's be real the food sucks. The restrooms suck. The dining room sucks. The service sucks. I tried two Carne Asada with cheese tacos. They were full of gristle. Honestly, they look like they've been sitting for a day on the counter. They look like petrified wood, the meat the tortillas don't even get me started. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Food was okay, my plate could have bigger but it satisfied me. Service was okay. What pretty much made up my mind was the note taped to the glass case by the register that stated a mandatory 20% tip for parties of 4 or more, even if the ticket was split between customers. The fact that you won't know about the policy until it's time to pay in my opinion is dishonest. I could have refused to pay the forced tip but not worth the hassle, besides not taking my family back to eat here has a bigger impact. I'm the only one who decides the amount of what I tip, I usually tip generously and with the okay food and service I probably would have left what I was charged. This area staple has something original but yet something I have always looked for since PHX. The best Tex-mex colab, Carne Guisada Enchiladas. The "Javi" special is what I had and the story behind the name is classic. (History is the menu). The rice was pretty salty and my tortilla was under cooked but even those issues could not stop me from coming back. The service was top notch and I wanted for nothing during my visit. The ambiance is very much a part of the experience here. Gilbert was a major Tejano music influence so the memorabilia is perfectly dated. The "Nick Cage" Elvis painting is something I would bid heavily for in an auction!!!! read more

This is a never again place for me I ordered chicken fajita tacos with guacamole and bean and cheese tacos and the tortillas were a soggy, and raw mess. I would give this 10 stars if allowed. I dunno how its taken me this long to make it here. First, if you like Tejano music, this place is like the Tejano Hard Rock Cafe. Pictures everywhere, and the owner, Gilbert Rodriguez was a famous Tejano artist himself. He even came by to ask how my food was ! And for that, I can say it was amazing ! I had the "Gilbert Special". You can see by the picture I attached how great it looked, and I promise you it tasted even better. I sat in an area I'll just call the Royalty Room because it was adorned with so much cool stuff from Selena to Elvis. It's ok. Service is not good one ends up leaving a double tip. Not cool because you're not given a receipt I left a tip but it was a lot for two people at lunchtime. Check your receipt for gratuity charges. I saw it in the gallery pictures. read more

Just moved near 90 and 211, this hands down is some of the best enchiladas on this side of town. The carne guisada enchiladas are amazing, the meat is soft the type of cheese they use is great and their salsa was great. Their menu is not overwhelming and is perfect for what you need From a Mexican restaurant. There isn't very many good options around this side of town so this will be our spot for some good enchiladas. read more

This review makes me sad. I have been to Gilberts once before a couple years ago and it was 10 out of 10 I went just recently, and I was so disappointed. We waited a while to get a table that was waiting to be cleaned off and then once we were seated, we waited a while for the waitress. Then she finally came, we waited a while for the food when the food came, my enchiladas were very dry. I asked for green salsa she never brought it. I had to get up and go ask for it at the front. Arrived Sunday morning at 11am. Place was starting to fill, got our table quickly and our order was taken promptly. THEN all goes bad. Took 35 minutes for food to arrive. I ordered tamale plate with Carne G on the side . My husband had the enchilada plate, which was the only edible plate. . My plate came with refried beans and rice. The beans were so dry they turned to dust when I placed my fork in them- looked like freeze dried that needed hydrating. The rice exactly the same. The tamales were completely dried out, covered in congealed cheese. The Carne G was so cold it was as if just taken from the fridge. We left, at checkout the woman taking out money was mad because I had sent back my nasty plate. And when we told her we weren't paying for the Carne she became angry and told us the the meat was too expensive to be tossed. My husband told her that was not our problem and she should go talk to her kitchen staff about it. A very disappointing experience, we will certainly never darken their door step again. And will make sure we tell everyone we know and more, to avoid this nasty place. I bet if this place had a surprise visit from health department, they would fail. Dirty place. It is my feeling that the high ratings for Gilberts has a lot to do with the atmosphere; feeling like you are dining at Mi Abuela's. Regrettably, since neither I nor anyone in my party spoke Spanish, that was not exactly our experience dining here. As expected, Mariachi & Tejano music played throughout our time there. To be fair, all the other diners (nearly exclusively speaking in Spanish) certainly seemed to be having a great time. The waitresses were far more interested in socializing with other patrons than attending to us. they were not exactly rude, but it did feel like they simply had better things to do than wait on us. After ten+ minutes of waiting, asking for refills required getting up and flagging someone down. And they would be laughing or looking at an Instagram page with a friend hanging out. In other words, service was lacking though friendliness was not. The decor was interesting at least. The walls are plastered with former and current Tejano and Mexican musicians. Signed autographs, records, photographs. Balloons and Fiesta feel. Definitely a family place. I believe most of the individuals that work there actually relatives. We were able to meet Gilbert and he was a lot of fun, though he does not speak English. I was disappointed that they do not serve Horchata at all, and no Puffy Tacos on the weekend. Overall, was satisfied with the food. Though not wowed. And I have most certainly had authentic Tex-Mex and Mexican food. I will say say that *Javi's Special (what they are known for) was the best, by far. Carne Asada flavorful, the corn tortillas wrapping it were not overly soggy, the accompanying rice and beans were unnotable. *Gilbert's Special (cheese enchilada, tamale, chalupa, + hard shelled taco) was also tasty. Divided onto two plates, we found it amusing that the one with the enchilada + tamale looked nearly identical to Javi's Special. Enchilada was satisfactory. Tamale was bland and too mushy. Chalupa and hard shell taco actually had surprisingly fresh cheese tomatoes and lettuce and the ground beef was pretty good. As a side note, I am used to a chalupa being a little closer to the thickness of a gordita and this was literally a hard shelled taco, but flat. *Porkchops were inordinately tough. However, this might be an example of when the dryness was intentional, because the flavor was still there. Side rice and beans were the same as the other dishes. *Menudo was simply not good. I have bought better tasting ones in the refrigerated section in the grocery store. Spices were present, but lacking zing. Served lukewarm. Meat quality seemed low. The complimentary *chips and salsa were appreciated. Personally glad the salsa was not as spicy as most Mexican establishments make it. however, after one round of chips shortly after two in the afternoon, they had run out for the day. Seems kind of ridiculous to me for a Mexican place. Ah, the *tortillas, which as any good diner knows is rather crucial in a Mexican meal. The *corn tortillas were good when they came out hot and fresh, not oily. The *flour tortillas, however, were another story. They did not taste homemade to me. Came out a little dry and chewy; no fluffiness at all. Twenty minutes later, approaching inedibility. Wish they had the Puffy Tacos available because we will not be returning to find out where they are on the (in)consistency range. Which is saddening, because it really does seem like an ideal place for regulars. read more

I live for little local hidden gems like Gilbert's. A little spot with tasty Tex-Mex meals, great house made flour tortillas and tons of character in the walls with the many musical and popular guests that have visited Gilbert's. I had a Mexican plate and the enchiladas were cheesy with a tasty sauce... just like my momma's recipe. Additionally it was well portioned with plenty of fluffy Spanish rice and refried beans and my plate came with a MONSTER CHALUPA! Did I mention the tortillas???? Fluffy, warm and the type that leave you with flour residue on your fingers!!! Just like grandmas!!! This flour tortilla snob approves... I might be back for a few dozen torts to keep at home??? I had never tried this restaurant as it is kind of tucked out of the way. It was one of the best Mexican plates I have had. a cheese enchilada, tamale with carne guisada gravy and a crispy taco. The taco meat was so hot from heat that I had to blow on it. That made me so happy b/c if something is meant to be hot then it should come out hot! The only drawback IMO is they only make borracho beans on the days they have fideo and this wasn't a fideo day. I told the owner how much I enjoyed the meal and he got up and walked me out to my car. Decided to visit this place because it was all over my Facebook feed. I made the biggest mistake by NOT reading the reviews first. It was very busy when we arrived. My fiancé ordered a tamale plate, beans and rice with a side of carne guisada. I ordered a beef enchilada plate. The order took 35 minutes for our order. Once it arrived we immediately noticed the tamale plate was not looking good. The beans were all dried up, and when my Fiancé put the fork into the tamale it was so dry it crumpled. Informed the waitress the deficiencies and we will not want another. She replied that she will take it off the bill. The carne guisada, on a bowl, was absolutely cold like someone took it out of the fridge. I finished my ok plate of enchiladas and decided we needed to leave immediately. Once we walked to the front to pay our order this lady looked already mad at us with a frown on her face. We informed her we will not pay for the tamale plate and she responded; I am still going to charge you for the enchilada plate. Well of course, I informed her. I am not here to receive free food. Guess she thought we were trying to get free food today. I then informed her that the side bowl of carne guisada was cold and please do not include it on our bill. With an attitude she said; The meat costs a lot of money. I informed her that has nothing to do with the fact you and your cooks failed us. You need to go talk to them. We left and were charge a gratuity. A GRATUITY???? For bad service?
